Video Stuttering during capture

I know this has been discussed in the past, but I cannot seem to find it; hope someone will help.
I am capturing old VHS tapes using Premiere 10 media capture via a Canopus ADVC55.  The clips I'm transferring suffer from stuttering during capture (approx every 1 sec).  I seem to remember that this indicated a timing issue from stretched tape or something.  I hate to think that's the case.  Could it be anythng else, and is there a workaround?
Thanks,
Julian

Steve,
I had an informative (but ulimately depressing) talk today with an engineer at Grass Valley.  He said that the ADVC55 adherence to the NSTC spec is quite tight, and suggested I try another source as an input to the device.  I plugged in a Sony camcorder and it converted seamlessly.  He suggested the VHS player (or tape) doesn't meet the NSTC spec, and that I try another VHS player that may be tighter to the spec.  If is also possible that my old VHS camcorder originally used to create the tapes didn't meet the spec.  The ADVC-300 contains time-base correction that could alleviate this, but is substantially more costly.  The cheap Diamond A/V converter probably isn't as sensitive to the spec, and is therefor more forgiving.
All interesting, but in the end, I have a fairly expensive device that won't help me.  I guess I can look for another VHS player to try, but it sounds like a lot of effort for a long shot.  Any ideas on a work-around?  I'm stuck.
By the way, MediaInfo shows the following for the  Diamond device:
Format:  YUU
Codec:  UYUY          http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/en/bf/amm/http://
Frame Rate:  59.940 fps
Resolution:  480x720
The link must be to the developer.

  • Video preview during capture CS3

Video preview during capture is not working even though settings are at preview video and audio during capture.
The work around seems to be to go ahead record anyway (red button) then it works after I paste the captured audio onto the timeline.
When pasting it to the timeline the video appears. The video appears during subsequent captures. It seems like a bug in CS3. This was not a problem with PP 1.5
    Thanks

  • No video Preview During Capture

    Here is the scoop:
    Adobe Premeire CS5
    Windows 7 64bit
    Canon XL2
    Capturing DV NOT HDV
Canon standard device control as there is no preset listed for the XL2
Video and audio actually captures fine. I can hear audio during capture but cannot see any video.
I know there is no video preview when capturing HDV but I am capturing DV.
Again this is CS5 NOT 5.5 so .dll fix is not an option
    Thanks in advance.

    FIXED!
    Heres how it went:
Went to Device Manager and let windows look for an updated driver for my Graphics Card (Radeon HD 4200). Windows said the most current driver was installed. It was NOT the most current driver. I went out to ATI and got the most current driver, installed, reboot and OH JOY! I get video in the capture window during preview AND during capture (of DV)!
I also let windows (device manager) look for updated drivers for sound and it said the driver was the most current. Again, it was not. so the moral of the story is...Don't trust Device Manager on current driver versions.
Hope this will help some folks out there.
    Side Note*
Most of us spend hours on forums looking for answers/fixes to particular problems. Most replies I see are either in the vein of "I have that problem too" or " try this, it worked in this OTHER version or try this OTHER software" etc. If you dont have an answer/fix for the problem, dont post.
ON the flip side of that, when posting a problem you want an answer to, Give all the pertinent information in your initial question. " Premiere crashes when I plug up my camera" does NOT suffice! What version of Premiere, what camera, what OS, What kind of connection, etc.

  • Flash video stutters when using DW's player

I'm banging my head against the wall with this one. I want to
add video to my site using Dreamweavers player. But, the video
stutters during playback. This is not an occasional hang up, it
seems to only play every other frame or so.
This problem has nothing to do with bandwidth or computer
speed. This problem occures when played back locally, AND DOES NOT
HAPPEN with another player. The problem is I do not want to use
another player. I add a lot of video for clients and I love how
easy it is to do that with Dreamweaver.
Here are samples using the same video file, only different

I don't see any evidence that you used Dreamweaver to insert
    the
player. Normally, when you insert Flash with Dreamweaver, it
    inserts
code I can readily identify. Did you use GoLive?
The pages you show are consipicuously missing the
    <object> code and
    the JavaScript that DW uses.
And I don't see any differences in the players. The pages
    both link to
files named flvplayer.swf (in different folders) with the
    same look and
the same file size. I am late in this thread, so maybe I
    missed the
    boat.
Anyway, I don't know if this would make a difference with
    that player,
but one page uses a relative link to the .flv, while the
    other page
    uses an absolute link, including
http://. See if changing that one to a
    relative link helps.
I only watched about a minute from both pages and, although
    872 Kpbs
for the video track is VERY high, I did not see any glitches.

I have a new Macbook Air 2012, Apple TV 2 and I have tried wired and wireless connections both still result in stuttering during video airplay to the ATV2.
I have even bought a new Airport Extreme Router just to confirm it is not the router and it still didn't help.
I have brought all items in the same room with wired connections and still same issue.
I was thinking maybe ATV 3 might help since it has 2 wifi antennas and faster processor.
Have tried everything I could think of.
This was one of the main reasons I bought a Macbook Air for this airplay feature. Very frustrated.
Any thoughts; any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I also disabled Norton Firewall and restarted the Air and Now I'm able to use Air Play.
I know that the Apple remedy said that to do that in the support article, but I totally forgot I had that enabled..
It actually works. I can even stream to the Apple TV now through my MacBook Air.
BTW, Go into setting under the ATV, and click on update...you'll see that there was another update avaialble for the last gen of ATV...
It does have to restart twice..I guess once to download and and nother to apply.

  • Dvd Video stutters in stand alone machines.

I have succesfully used Ulead Movie Factory 3 for a while, but never liked the way you could not insert chapter points manually, so I decided to give Encore 2.0 a shot.
I like the compiling portion of the Adobe product, and find it very easy to use, and intuitive. The problem is when I burn a new DVD, the video quality is not up to par, and the video gets blocky, and stutters during camera movements.
Currently I Tivo hockey games from TV, and then burn them on a standalone Sony DVD Recorder to a Dvd-r which I then edit on the computer, by adding text, and a menu and such. To use Adobe Encore 2, I have converted the source file to Mpeg2 using a software program, on it's slowest, highest quality setting, so Adobe can read it, and then do my authoring. In Adobes monitor window the video is smooth, and seamless, but the burned result is nowhere near as good. The video portion movement is jerky, and blocky. In trying to isolate the problem, I have used the same source Mpeg2 in Movie Factory 3 to see if it produced the same result, and I am sorry to say everything was fine with that burn. There was no stutter, and no blockiness. The problem seems like Adobe is compressing the video to a lower quality during the burning process. I have Adobes monitor setting set to High, but I think that only translates to the monitoring portion of the program. I could not find an option to tell Adobe to burn at the highest quality setting, regardless of the file size. My project is no more than 45 minutes in length, so I am not trying to jam alot onto a DVD disk. I have pretty much exhausted my knowledge, and what the problem may be, so I am hoping someone here has some suggestions.
    My system specs:
    Dell
    Pentium 4 - 2.8 ghz
    1.5 gigs Ram
    8x Hewlett Packard DVD drive
    160 gig hard drive - 70% free
    Drive has been defragged.
Also while I am at it, is there a better way to capture my games from the TIVO while eliminating the standalone dvd-r step? The computer, and the Tivo are in seperate rooms naturally, but I was wondering if I could network it to the computer, and capture video that way. Anyone have any experience with this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

This really is a very, very common issue with standalone recorders.
The data rates they use are often very high indeed, and it can often result in discs being burned from them that will only play correctly on the machine they were made on.
    You mention
    >To use Adobe Encore 2, I have converted the source file to Mpeg2 using a software program, on it's slowest, highest quality setting, so Adobe can read it, and then do my authoring.
What file types are created by the Sony please?
And what are you converting with?
Remember the Adobe monitor is showing you the footage both in progressive scan format - ie, non interlaced, and additionally it's streaming directly off the drive, not from a written disc.
Once you get to disc, the rules all change - and this is where you will see the results of "conversion".
MPEG files are heavily compressed, and converting them to another compressed format will cause inevitable quality loss.
Can you please give some info on exactly what the structure is from the Sony, the file types, and if at all possible the data rates of your MPEG-2 files after conversion?
There is a utility called "bitrate Viewer" that will do the final part. Grab a copy at http://www.tecoltd.com/

I bought two Seagate 1TB Barracuda drives and installed them as a Raid 0. This did not change the stutter during playback. I contacted the GPU manufacturer and they said to install the latest driver. They have had several updated drivers recently. I have tried each new one as they were releases with no improvement. Nvidia said I can send it in for "warranty repair". I just paid for the GPU card on October 20th. I tried disabling the audio devices. No change.

  • Unable to monitor audio during capture

I'm using FCP6 to capture footage shot with a JVC GY-HD100U at HDV 720p24. I'm using a JVC BR-HD50 deck to capture from, connected to my MacPro 3 GHz quad via firewire.
In the Audio/Video Setting dialog box, the Sequence Preset is "HDV 720P24". My Capture Preset is "HDV", Device Control Preset "HDV FireWire". Video Playback shows "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)" and offers only the options of None and Digital Cinema Desktop Preview–Main as alternate choices. Both HDV options are greyed out. The Audio Playback option is set to Default.
With this setup, controlling the deck remotely from the capture window, I get video but no audio. The only audio I get is when the deck is connected to my video monitor and I use it to monitor the output of the deck. The audio is there when I play back the clips after capture but I cannot monitor the sound with the computer's speakers. If I go to the A/V Devices tab, under Video, it shows the same "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) with the same choices described above, and the Options button next to it doesn't do anything.
Can anyone think of anything I've missed in the initial setup?

    Keith,
For whatever reason (perhaps the intense processor needs) HDV does not allow you to monitor your audio during capture. The computer just will not do it. What I have done, if I really want to hear what's happening durning capture, is plug my speakers into the headphone jack of my XL H1. Due to the processing that's going on, the audio "lags" behind the video by a couple of seconds.
I'm pretty sure this is not a setup problem, but just a limitation due to the nature of your format.
    Hope that helps!

  • Dropped Frames During Capture

FCE HD is dropping frames during capture when I'm taking video from my Canon Video camera and the three DVD players I've been using. Any suggestions or ideas?
    Here's my info:
    - Didn't work for either of these setups:
    - Canon to my iBook G4 via firewire
    - DVD player to DVD converter via RCA cables to ibook via firewire
    - My external Harddrive (LaCie 230 GB) is hooked up to my laptop via USB Drive.
    - Easy setup configured to DV-NTSC or DV-NTSC-DV Converter dpending on capture device
Thanks in advance for the help

    Hi Lisa,
Well, for starters you probably have less free space on your internal HD than you did a year ago - rule of thumb is keep at least 15%-20% free space on your drives, especially your system drive; more free space is better. Couple that with the fact that USB really can't keep up with the demands of video and it's easy to get dropped frames.
There's also the question of what else you've put on your machine since last year, whether or not you updated OSX or QT since then, if you have anything else running when you capture ... there could be lots of factors.
Have you ever run a maintenance utility on your Mac - eg. MacOSXCocktail, MacJanitor, Onyx, etc ?

  • No sound captured during Capture Now

First time in many moons using FCP. I'm capturing from a mini DV (Canon Eulura 70) using the Capture Now function. The problem is that it appears that no sound is being captured. I've read other posts about not hearing sound during capture... at the moment I'm using headphones connected to the camera and the sound is fine. I'd prefer to use the computer to monitor the sound but I cannot locate a checkbox anywhere to turn this feature on.
When I drop the captured clips onto the canvas no corresponding audio file appears in the timeline, and no audio plays during playback. I've checked the clip setting in log/capture and it's set to capture both video and audio. I've checked System Settings, and under Scratch disks it's set to capture video and audio separately. Audio playback in FCP is set to built-in audio. Sound is working fine in all other applications.
I've tried trashing the preference files but no effect. Also I tried to just capture audio, and as soon as I hit esc, FCP crashes... this is totally repeatable. I also noticed that on the clip setting tab there is a section with a bunch of sliders (7 in all)... don't know what they do, but they are all greyed out.
    Camera works fine in iMovie...

There are no check boxes on that tab, only a pull down list entitled "Capture". The choices are Video and Audio, Video only, Audio only. I have it set to Video and Audio. Perhaps there are checkboxes in another version?

On fw 3.0546.2.3 video capture was super, fast, without noisying sounds. Now with 5.0638.3.0.1 it's not possible to normally capture the video on mp4!!!!! The sound is noising, refresh during capture is too slow...
Mo colleague didn't make fw update and his phone works on videocapture still perfect (he has old 3.0546.2.3).

  • Backing up unedited family video: Should I capture using FCE or iMovie?

I have >50 hours of family video (kids) that I'm not ready to edit yet. I would like to capture the footage in order to back it up because it is priceless. My plan is to buy some large hard disks and save video there, and then when Blu-Ray comes out, I'll buy a Blu-Ray drive and burn Blu-Ray disks as an additional layer of safety.
The captured files will need to be in a format that lasts. As far as I can tell, both FCE and iMovie save captured clips as Quicktime files, which I'm guessing will be around for a while and compatible with future video editing apps. Both FCE and iMovie can import Quicktime clips. I'll be importing the entire hour of video from each tape, in a single capture.
    My question is this:
    If...
    (a) rendering doesn't bother me (like importing clips using iMovie then editing using FCE)
    (b) timecode isn't important to me (iMovie doesn't save timecode)
... is there any reason to capture the video using Final Cut instead of iMovie?
The only feature that FCE has that iMovie doesn't, is the ability to detect dropped frames during capture. Are there other reasons?
I like the fact that iMovie splits the capture into individual clips at each break and saves each clip as an individual file. If you're willing to do the work, FCE/FCP can do this to, using DV Start/Stop detect, making the segments into subclips, then exporting them as individual clips. FCP makes this a practical possibility using batch export, whereas FCE lacks that feature and exporting each clip one by one is impractical (I have maybe 200 individual clips per hour of tape). But this is a task I plan for later. Right now my concern is finding the "best way" to capture and save all this video for later editing.
I guess I could also ask, should timecode be important to me? My tapes contain a lot of timecode breaks, so recapturing video from tape automatically isn't likely to work well. I don't know any other reason timecode might be important for consumer-level family video.
    PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5 GHz 3GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT

    Anthony,
while I fully agree with Al answer, let me add one note in favor of iMovie in answering your original specific question (note: I'm a quite happy user of FCE for all its advantages over iMovie, but for the point I'm going to make).
The basic difference between FCE and iMovie in scene detection (based on the same principle of using date/time breaks as dividers), is that iMovie creates as many media files as clips during capture itself, while FCE Subclips are created AFTER the capture of a unique media file, using DV Start/Stop Detect and Make Subclip, that does NOT splits files.
So you'd better consider now if recovering unused disk space, by trashing unused clips, will be a major issue for you in the future, when you'll be editing your movies. If so, keep in mind that this job is very simple if you captured with iMovie and then imported its clips to FCE (and if you confirm you don't mind about TC and audio rendering), while it is quite complex if you captured directly with FCE, and, I'd say, not recommended unless absolutely needed.

    Hello
    Here we go again!
