Video switch and extended desktop

Is it possible to use a video switch for my G4 and G5 with the display it controls being the only monitor for the G4 and the extended desktop for the G5?
Mac OS X (10.4.5)

There is really no dependencie on whether the image being sent through the switch is the primary desktop or the extended desktop. The switch will have no awareness of this. What's going to matter is if you find a video switch compatible with your interfaces and monitor. Are they DVI?

  • Mirror and Extended Desktop - Panasonic 42" 720 image cropped

I have my 15.4 macbook pro connected to a Panasonic 42" 720 HDTV via the mini displayport. In both mirror and extended desktop mode, the Panasonic image is cropped off on all four sides. I fooled around with all the resolution settings and nothing changes.
No matter what I do, the menu bar and dock get cropped off by a few pixels. How can I fix this?
    thanks

Right, your TV is overscanning. That's very common. Overscan has been part of what TVs have done for decades.
If your TV is meant to be compatible with computer output, there should be a way to set the screen size using the TV's remote and/or menu system so that computer output just fills the screen. So check you TV's user manual about making a connection to a PC for information about how to get rid of overscan on the TV.

  • HT5019 How do I play a video on my extended desktop (my TV) and still use my desktop to surf, work, etc.?

I have created the extended desktop, but don't know how to get the video on to the extended desktop, which displays on my TV.  I can't seem to play a file on my tv, and use my desktop on the mac to surf, work, etc. You seem to be able to use either ione or the other desktop - not both at once.
I was easily able to do this on my old PC!

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays
Dragging the menubar on the image representing one display to the image representing the second display.
As most programs send the signal for video to the primary display this will often free up the other display for using while you play video.  You can always use another video playback software, or just maximize the video playback software's window, instead of going fullscreen.  It really depends on the software you are using to play videos.

  • G4 iBook and extended desktop

I am using my G4 iBook to connect to a projector for presentations and have noticed that MS PowerPoint 2004 allows projecting of the current slide whilst I can see next and previous slides on my iBook screen. However in order to do this I have to switch off monitor mirroring. However in order to do this I need extended desktop, which it would appear that my G4 iBook does not have!!! Is there any way of getting an extended desktop on my iBook in order to use this functionality?

    On an iBook, you can't.
One of the things Apple does to distinguish the 'consumer' line (iBooks and iMacs) from the 'professional' line (PowerBooks and PowerMacs) is that it prevents dual displays on the consumer line. We know from the video chips that Apple uses, that they are capable of dual display.
There does exist a hack that undoes the lockout that Apple wrote into the consumer line, but Apple is very clear that installing that hack will void your warranty and possibly damage the computer. This damage is (from what I have been able to glean) from overheating, especially from users that close their laptops while using an external monitor, as venting heat through the topcase is part of the design.

  • Video Playback on extended desktop

I have Windows Vista with a BFG nVidia 9800GTX video card. I have extended the desktop onto the second output of the video card with the intent of using a DVI to HDMI converter to hook this up to my TV and play video back over it.
It is possible to get iTunes (currently 8.2.1.6) to play video back on the extended desktop by default? When I have it on the main desktop, video plays back there. When I move iTunes over to the extended desktop then start playing, I don't seem to get video at all (both screens go blank but no video).
    Thanks.

There is really no dependencie on whether the image being sent through the switch is the primary desktop or the extended desktop. The switch will have no awareness of this. What's going to matter is if you find a video switch compatible with your interfaces and monitor. Are they DVI?

  • Full screen applictions and extended desktop

I just got my 20" iMac and have connected a 19" LCD to it in extended desktop. My only problem is that when i run a full screen application (like WoW or Front Row) the second monitor shuts off. I don't want this to happen, I want it to stay on and still be able to move the mouse over to it and use the programs that i have opened on it. does anyone know of a way to make this happen?
    Thank you!

well i found out that the next patch will fix the problem in WoW, but that still leaves front row... is there some patch or hack for front row to add dual monitor support?

  • USB 2 and Extended desktop

Hello there. Pay no attention the computer listed on this post. This post concerns a Powermac G4 Dual 1.25 and not the iMac g5. Does the Powermac g4 dual 1.25 support USB 2.0? Does it also support extended desktop? Thanks for any info.

It supports Extended desktop as long as it has a dual head graphics card, and you can attach two displays. All MDDs have, I believe, although it would probably have one DVI and one ADC connector. Depending on what display you have, you might need one or two adapters.
As previously stated, getting USB 2.0 connectivity on the MDD requires a USB 2.0 PCI card to be installed. There is no on-board USB 2.0 on any powermac G4.
There are several third party USB card. Make sure the one you get is OS X compatible.
Note, that if you have a USB 2.0 peripheral (such as a printer, or a digital camera) you can still attach it and use it on you USB 1.1 bus, although it will only run at 11 Mbps, however your computer will accept it.

  • ITUNES AND EXTENDED DESKTOP

O guess I can't post a pic as a reference here or attach the thing.
Ok, I run two 17 inchers down deep and it's 2560x1024 display. Safari takes the extended desktop to timbuktu. iTunes doesn't like to span the entire display. Do people who have HD 30" displays only see like itunes take up 1% of their display area? I'm going to suggest to Apple they allow itunes to resize window freedom for all mankind! Should I use the osx feedback?
    Cherrs!

well i looked into other media players. no luck. cddb access and altivec importing aiff are nice, i solved this problem by permanently erasing the want in my mind for full screen support, wait what did i just say i don't remember oh i noticed on apple insider that apple is specing a new display interconnect hd interface called udf or something like that. I'm waiting for HD DVD to come out before I buy antother computer or display so I can go hddvd with that technology at that time. I guess at that time I'll drop the money for a 30 in hd display or whatever size they have then. when will lep's or led displays come out to price me nice? epson pringing lcds sounds cool, ok i'm done, hd dvd come soon so I can see all itunes column access thingy last thing hd runs like mud on a 400 mhz g4 (sawtooth) so just for kicks I'll menntion that when hd comes along you'll need a faster cpu to kick the bits, hd dvd for eva peron

  • Zoom and extended desktop

I can't be the first person to notice this, but all my searching hasn't turned anything up...
Evidently, when one uses the Universal Access 'zoom' function with a computer with multiple monitors set to extended desktop mode, it doesn't work. The zoom centers on the point at the middle of the extended desktop, and evidently, the software thinks the desktop is only as big as one of the monitors, because you can't move the pointers to the top or bottom of the entire extended desktop.
This is on a 1.67 GHz PB running Mac OS X 10.4.7, with a 19" LCD attached in extended-desktop mode. The 19" has the menu bar.
    Any help much appreciated,
    Vic

I use the "zoom" feature as well. I would LOVE to be able to use the feature on my display while giving a presentation in "normal" view without the zoom feature turned on. To date, I have not found a way to make this happen. Any tips?

  • Usb video adapter and multiple desktops

I just upgraded my mbp mid-2010 to 10.8.  Everything is fine, wait for it, until I try to use my external usb vga adapter.  When that is plugged in and I instert anything into another usb port it creates a new desktop and steals focus from what I did have dispalyed.  So literally I will be working on my remote session, plug in a flash drive, my remote session screen goes away and a blank desktop is now shown on the external monitor.  I have the logic board problem with NVidia problem so I can't use the mini-display port.  I went into Command Center and turned that thing off, thinking it was causing it.
So I guess that is the question: why does it create all these darn desktops when all I want are just the mbp display and the external monitor?

  • Airplay, ATV and Extended Desktop

I for one really like this feature, but there still are some bumps. For example, When I move a Safari window to the ATV display, start a video, and then try to go full screen, many times it goes full screen on the computer display. I think that this is a behavior that will improve with future iterations of Mavericks, but it is kind of annoying now. Any thoughts on how to make this behavior more consistent (i.e., keep the airplay displays consistent and keep the apps running in these window on these windows)?

  • Convert Video Switch in Desktop Software

What happens when I use  the convert video switch in the Desktop Software when I am syncing videos to and from playbook.  Having problems playing video clips tagged as AVI.  Get error message on Playbook when I go to play the clips.  Assuming not a true AVI or using a 3rd party codec or something along that line.  Will play on computers but not the Playbook.  Will the convert video switch in the Desktop Software solve the problem.  Tried to use but it appeared to start to "convert"  all videos in file to upload to Playbook so I cancelled.  Any suggestion?  Thanks, Brian

Am I the only one suffering this issue with the video transcoding?

  • Extended desktop

I am running an Imac G5 that I just had repaired. Before the repair i was able to do an extended desktop. Now I am not able to. Support says that the my version will only do mirroring and that maybe the previous user had DLed someting that would do extended. My other monitor is an AOC 19".
I do video editing and extended is much more helpful than mirrored.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hello Medwards07,
Yes, there is a program that enables this feature, and it works on all the iMac G5 systems.
    You can get it here:
    Screen Spanning Doctor
    http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html
If you'd like to read a little about it, Mac World did a little Tinkering:
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/editors/2004/10/imacscreenspanning/index.php
So, this should do what you want. Keep in mind that Apple does not support this. So, if you use this, and have any trouble, they will likely not cover / repair the problem.
    I hope this helps.

  • ITunes breaks Airplay extend desktop via Apple TV

Hi there, using my MPBr 15in with Yosemite installed and an Apple TV.
I have been watching photoshop tutorials in an iTunes playlist via extended desktop (Video played on extended desktop on TV, I'm following along with Photoshop on my mac).
I had put my mac on charge and did some things for a while, came back and went to continue my tutorials. But for some unknown reason when I select play in iTunes, instead of just playing on the extended desktop like it was earlier, iTunes quits the extended mode, 'sends' the video to the Apple TV which is a bit of a bumpier process then I'd like. Not to mention it needs to 'buffer' the video each time the next one is played. The worst issue is that the video is zoomed in too far, meaning I cannot see the photoshop tools or the menus along the top and no way to change it (it seems at least). I could forgo the Airplay streaming if it didn't have that issue.
No Apple account is signed in to the Apple TV.
I have tried changing a couple settings in Apple TV (including overscan settings on/off) to no avail. Also changed iTunes setting of Airplay that appears next to the volume slider. No matter what I try when I play the video, extended desktop mode turns off and iTunes streams just the video to Apple TV, also meaning I have to completely disconnect from Apple TV and reconnect again.
So my question is, how do I force iTunes to not use Airplay streaming when I have specifically configured the computer to extend the desktop? I want to extend the desktop!! Using the multiple desktop feature is useful!
Why does it assume I want to stream it independently rather than keep the second desktop?
Why has it done it now, instead of before? I never pressed anything that I know of. It just decided to do it.
If for whatever reason there is no way to turn this auto configuration off, how do I stream the video so it does not cut off the edges?
Thanks in advance. If I figure it out I'll be sure to post what I found here.

Troubleshoot the network, starting with power cycling the ATV and router.
