Video tearing with xcompmgr and mplayer

Hello, recently I've noticed a lot of tearing when playing movies with xcompmgr loaded. When i kill xcompmgr it goes away (almost) completely and when I enable it again the tearing starts to reappear. I'm running kernel 2.6.29, xorg 1.6 and the latest nvidia beta.
I run into this tearing no matter what video output i select, xv, vdpau or gl, it doesn't matter, video still tears.
Since I really like the effects of xcompmgr + openbox (fast but still reasonably looking) and don't really want to do without xcompmgr, I was wondering if anyone here have experienced the issue and came up with some kind of solution to this issue.
Thanks, GBG-Johan.
I forgot to mention that the video tearing still occurs when i use xine-ui instead of mplayer, so I guess it's not an issue related to which player i use.

System info :
Dell Studio 14z
NVidia 9400 M
built-in monitor and Sharp 1080p TV connected via HDMI
KDE 4.4
X.Org version: 1.7.5
NVidia Driver Version: 190.53
uname -a :
Linux shinny 2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 9 15:12:10 CET 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
I am experiencing video tearing when using  VDPAU output with mplayer.  If I use XV output instead, there is no tearing.  If I use Dragon Player (which doesn't support VDPAU) there is also no tearing.  Playing around with the VSync option in nvidia-settings only has an effect if I'm using XV.
On my other box running Funtoo, I had experienced the same issue.  After some searching on the Web, I found that someone suggested to add :
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.  On my Funtoo system this fixed the issue.  However, doing the same on my Archlinux Studio 14z didn't fix the problem.
I also tried recompiling mplayer (as if that would change anything...) to no avail.
The issue also occurs even if I use the laptop screen without any external monitor connected.
Does anyone have a clue of what else I should try?  The suggestion to use only XV is not suitable because I have some 1080p content that I can not decode fast enough using only the CPU.
Another test I might try is to run my Funtoo on my laptop.  This will tedious and it might not be exactly the same, since the kernel on my Funtoo machine is custom built with only the drivers for the hardware in that box.

  • I have tearing with flash and Youtube videos.

    First, my specs.
    Windows XP
    Quad Core
    Nvidia 9600gt DDR3
    2GB RAM
    Browsers: Firefox 3.6.12 and IE7
I have the newest Nvidia Drivers and Adobe Flash 10.1
Well the problem is that I have tearing with flash and videos in Windowed Mode, if I turn the full screen option there is no sign of tearing BUT only if I have hardware acceleration turn on.
So the problem is, why I have tearing in windowed mode?

Same here. I am not getting 'what tearing' is all about. Can u please explain?

  • Xcompmgr and mplayer.

I've noticed that mplayer doesn't take too kindly to xcompmgr's pretty shadow and fade effects. When trying to play a movie using just mplayer, I have to shake the window in order to get it to render the video, then if I fullscreen it will normally start having random black spots appears. Last time I used GMPlayer is crashed the whole xserver. Is there some sort of xcompmgr blacklist that I could use, cause i love having all the shadows n fades but I just dont want it for maybe a couple programs. Thanks for any and all support.

BUT ANYWAYS, relating to this post, xfce has its own compositing manager? I didnt even know about this, always figured that xcompmgr was the only way to make everything have shadow with fade-in and fade-outs
Yes, Xfwm has the option for a built in compositing manager. It doesn't allow for transperancy switches, but does add pretty shadows to things. It's about 200% more stable than xcompmgr and (with an nvidia card) the performance is good enough to use it on a daily basis.
You do have to recompile Xfwm with the "--enable-compositor" option in order to get the effects however.

  • Horizontal video tearing in xfce and ion graphics (nvidia)

    Hello all,
I have arch + xfce running no problems, but there is significant horizontal video tearing when I play videos (in vlc or firefox/flash). I have already enabled 'Sync to VBlank' within the nvidia-utils control panel. I think the problem arises from the xfce monitor settings window that only allows the frequency output to the monitor to be 50Hz. Can someone confirm this and/or offer advice?
    Thanks again,
    DF

Since Devotedfollower is using a nvidia ion card he will get the best results without compositing at all.
If you want to use a nvidia card along with compiz without tearing, I found these additional steps to be necessary:
    put
    Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
under Section "Device" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if you don't have one, run "nvidia-xconfig" once as root)
put "nvidia-settings -l" into your startup applications
install and launch ccsm, open up the general options and look for a tick called "Sync to VBlank" and activate it
within these general options there is a tick called "recognize refresh rate" (or something alike); deactivate it
try playing around with the refresh rate slider (I got the best results when using the exact refresh rate for my display or something higher)
Note that these steps are only necessary if you really want to use compiz on nvidia cards. They worked with several GTX cards for me. Don't know about your ION though.
My netbook has an ION but it was one of the first ones. As far as I can remember it had no tearing on xfce without compositing but on compiz it had a bit tearing at the top of screen even with all the steps above.
Nevertheless I wish you best luck!
P.S. Tearing has always been a huge problem on Linux for me. After a lot research I found compiz being the only compositor able to almost eliminate tearing. So the only choice for nvidia users to get rid of video tearing is either to use no compositing at all (which results in teary desktop graphics) or to use compiz along with vdpau...

  • Problem with xcompmgr and i3 window manager

    Hey guys,
Had a hard time trying to search for this problem. and nothing came up for the exact problem I was having. Anyways this is my problem. with xcompmgr is that it doesn't seem to be refreshing or something. it leaves trails of previous windows for some reason. not sure why. Anyone have this problem or someone know how to fix it??!?
Here is a link to show you what i mean.

Thanks in advance for your kind and prompt attention.

    Wow psychadelic!
I found xcompmgr to be rather buggy when I used to use it. Try xcompmgr-dana (dcompmgr I think)  or Compton. I used to use Compton and it worked pretty well.
I stopped using real transparency in favor of pseudo-transparency because I sometimes use the tabbed mode on multiple terminals... tell me how awesome it is to read three terminals stacked on each other

  • Any 3rd party software to recover video taken with iPad and not yet backed up

I accidently deleted a video clip, taken with the iPad 3. iPad has not been backed up since as this video was shot yesterday and I was out of town and unable to back up iPad yet. Are there any 3rd party solutions to recover that file? I've turned off the iPad to prevent over righting.

I would like to show two other people a Keynote. - I know it´s really simple with iChat and I think it hasn´t changed with Messages.

So, is a combination with Facetime and iChat/Messages possible?

No, that is not possible at this time. iOS devices only support text and FaceTime video chats.

I recently bought a MacBook Pro and I'm using iChat (obviously). I've tried many times to have a One-Way Video chat with my friend who is using Windows XP and the newest version of AIM for Windows. When we connect to the video chat I can see myself but on his end he only sees a black screen, he is unable to see me. Help??

    Hi,
You could try Limiting the Bandwidth (ichat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit) to 500kbps. (Possibly try 200kbps as well)
If the latest version of AIM on PC includes the "Real Time" Option, it should turned Off. (It is a feature to send Text as you type but effects the Video end as well).

  • How do you burn videos taken with myIphone and stored on my computer to a DVD disc.  I purchased and tried using RealPlayer Plus 16 but got error message saying "unsopported media type"?  I alos tried using Real Players file converter with no success!

How do you burn videos taken with my Iphone 4S and stored on my computer to a DVD disc.  I purchased and tried using RealPlayer Plus 16 but got error message saying "unsopported media type"?  I also tried using Real Players file converter with no success!  Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Probably the OP is no longer paying attention to this unless the OP is subscribed to this discussion.  While not really an iPhone question I guess using an iPhone to produce the movie which then needs taking to the next step makes this as good a starting place as any unless you happen to know enough about what to do to determine in which forum to post.  A suggestion in that direction would help.
Anyway, Apple is backing off from supporting optical media.  It also depends upon what you mean by "DVD".  A DVD is just an optical disc which can support different file formats, but many people think it means a movie disc you can put in your TV.  Producing a movie disc requires special iDVD authoring software Apple used to sell but stopped several years ago.  I don't know if the old versions work under newer systems.  There's also the free Burn application which authors DVDs but takes a bit of learning and has nowhere near the features of iDVD.
If the OP means simply burning the transferred movie files to a DVD for archiving in computer format you don't need special software for that; its built into the operating system File > New Burn folder etc.

  • Video broadcast with bridge and pvdm3

    Hey all,
Any way to do a Video broadcast with a 4520 bridge and a 2911 with pvdm3..
We want the bridge to dial out to all locations. If the 9971 video phones dial in to a 2911 conf using pvdm3's is there a way to get the bridge to dial out to that conf?
Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPad App

I'm hoping that I am missing something because this seems like a strange request. Are you saying that you want a 4520 MCU to outdial to a preset group of endpoints when a completely separate PVDM3-based ad-hoc conference is started? The answer to this would be no.
What may be possible would be to join the H323 ID/E164 ID of the 4520 conference to the PVDM3-based ad-hoc conference by calling it and using the Join button on the Cisco phone. If that worked, the obvious downside would be that you have a cascaded conference across two MCUs. Each MCU would make its own active speaker decisions and feed only that output to the other bridge.

I decided to keep the old drivers and just ignore the error. I read a dozen mail list entries etc before reverting back, and it seems laptop keyboards are often quite tricky to get working correctly. Also using a non english layout will cause some extra effort.. My suggestion is to uninstall evdev and stick to the old drivers until there's a real reason to switch to evdev.
Well, after follow the post you gave.
I think that evdev now is really sucks!
I agree with you, as long as my whole computer works, I donot care such errors.

  • Video tearing with transparency (composite) effects

    - Arch Linux i686.
    - Nouveau open source drivers (but the exact same happens with the official nvidia drivers).
    - Openbox.
    - Xcompmgr (same with cairo-compmgr).
    Athlon II x2 250 (3.0 GHz), socket AM3.
    Nvidia Geforce 7025 (onboard).
    2 GB DDR3 RAM (1333 MHz).
SMPlayer and VLC, with "gl", "gl2", etc., nothing works. I have read many many (MANY) reports of Nvidia cards not working with composite effects. My current (ghetto-ass) solution is to click/right click the clock from Tint2 to "pkill" and start xcompmgr. I have also added to the right click menu its own "Composite Effects ON/OFF" category, but I don't use it as much.
    What would you recommend?
Edit: I was thinking maybe start SMPlayer with a script that first kills xcompmgr, then restarts it if the application closes. Can it also be done if I press the pause/stop buttons or I exit fullscreen mode? Like monitoring the application activity/log/output/etc and killing-starting xcompmgr accordingly.

I'm asking about it, to figure out if this is a universal problem and something apple is probably working on as a fix for everyone, or something isolated to either a few bad video cards, or a generation of bad video cards, and is something a new Nvidia card would fix.
Applecare is unable to give me any information on it. And I dont want to send my computer in for service for a week or two and end up with the same problem.

Erased footage and hooked up my g-raids to the Macbook.  Looked fine.
Took hard drives back to imac, tried transfer again.  Stuttering and drop outs continued.
Back to Macbook with Snow Leopard, no problems.  My guy is editing job right now on Macbook.

    Hi Drago
It is very bad situation. Toshiba with every notebook must offer functioning product and because of that offer tested drivers. Those drivers are adapted for each notebook model and also have protecting function. That means the graphic card will not be forced to run on the highest level.
As you can see with original driver you have problems playing some games. For me it is nothing unusual for mobile computers. Problem is that every modified driver is not supported and tested by notebook manufacturer. I recommend you to use tested Toshiba driver. At the end maybe you must make compromise between gaming and watching movies.
By the way: are original DVD movies also so bad while you use preinstalled WinDVD?
