Video & The 20GB Color Ipod

Will the bring video to the 20gb ipod? with a flash update or something?
It doesn't seem like it would be to hard to do?

I just posted the same topic that you posted... funny. I agree. It should be able to do so. I am really bummed because my wife and I bought 2 Color iPod 20GB less 2 weeks ago and I would have waited had we known. This is a real bummer.

  • Video Support to Color iPods (4G)?

Does anyone know if there's any plans to give the 4th Generation Color iPods Video Capability now that they've launched the new iPod. iPodLinux.org has proved that the hardware is sufficiant to support it. They'd just be able to make more money off people from an increase video file sales on the new iTunes Store.

Apple are mising a trick here. How many of the many millions of iPod photo owners are going to rush out and buy a 5G iPod for video? Taking a hit of probably £100+ on a product that most have only had for a few months? A small percentage I reckon.
The 5G offers very little else that the iPod photo doesn't. No extra capacity for a start and the lack of Firewire is a BIG minus to some.
These current owners would possibly be enticed into buying some video content from iTMS however. If the facility was activated.
At the end of the day Apple is going to sell just as many iPods as it is now.
At the same time selling more videos, expanding the market and not alienating loyal customers.
It's in Apple's interest in the wider scheme of things to convince potential movie companies and TV stations that the market is there. The figures would be substantially more impressive if the millions of existing customers where able to use this feature.
Food for thought? I really couldn't care less about video, I just want Apple to leave us with stable firmware (fixed smart playlists, stable slideshows and screenlock) before moving on. Please.

  • Upgrade from 20GB 3G to 60GB Color iPod

Am considering upgrading from my current 3G 20GB to a 60GB Color iPod.
Generally, for those who have done something similar - - are you pleased?
Specifically, what 3G accessories would I be able to use with the 60GB color? (The 60GB color is a little 'thicker' than the 20GB color, I think, but I'm not sure how it compares to the 20GB 3G). Can one use the 3G docks? (I have two.) What about cables (I know I'll have to get a new A/V cable to do slideshows, but can 3G cables do sound only.) Car adapters (cassette?). Car chargers?
    Thanks for any info.
    - - Scott

Anything that plugs into the top or bottom (cables, car/tape adapters) will work.
Your docks won't. The 60 GB is the thickest dockable iPod, and I can't even come close to getting it into either of the docks around my house (4G 20 and a 3G 20).

  • Do the REFURBISHED 20G Ipods come with new batteries?

It seems like a good deal for a 20GB Color ipod for $120, but do they come with new batteries or wil it die in 3 months?
Is the battery covered under the 1 year warranty?

They should be as good as a new model. Yes the batteries are covered under the one-year warranty so you should be all set, at least for a year.
I bought my daughter a refurbished 30GB video model for her birthday in October and basically it was a brand new unit in a different box. So far so good.

  • Color ipod broken ?

I am looking for help. My son's 20gb color ipod stopped working. I tunes does not recognize it when it is plugged in on the USB. The ipod screen shows a black/grey charging type icon that briefly flashes or a frown face ipod and triangle. After looking at discussions, I have tried re setting several times, & downloaded updated software for ipod and itunes. When I get to screen that offers restore option, the window is greyed out and I cannot click on either option of restore or update. I tried charging through the AC outlet to be sure the battery was charged. I also tried to get it into disc mode with no success. Am I only left with sending it back ? It is less than six months old ! He did not drop it or misuse it.
Thanks in advance for reading a long post but I wanted to include that I had tried all the typical stuff w/o luck.

Carl: I have been reading a lot of the discussions and notice there are a number of you out there in cyberspace trying to help out those less experienced. I notice the tone of your notes and advice is patient, too. That is hard to convey in written text, but you and others do it. Because ipod problems are so frustrating and it is a 2 hr drive to our local genius store, you and your cohorts are really appreciated. I hope others join in reminding you of that sometimes.
    Happy new year.

  • COLOR iPod charging problem and resetting...

I have a 3 week old 20GB iPod color display, i have 2 other older ones, never had any problems... now I plug in the color iPod to the supplied USB charging cord and it appears to be charging and when i remove it from the computer it shows a full battery. After 30-60 minutes of playing the screen goes to the APPLE, flashes a bit, then the low battery icon appears and the thing is dead. If I hit reset, it stops the APPLE from flashing, but it's still dead. This has happened twice in 2 days... Anyone else have any charging problems? Can I plug this into my Firewire charging cord for my 3rd gen iPod to test the cord?

As long as your Firewire cable has a dock connector that fits your iPod it should work on it. Make sure that your iPod is plugged into the charger for 4 hours or until the iPod screen displays "Battery Charged" and shows a solid green battery, not a flashing one.
I've been having a similar problem to yours lately. Mine worked perfectly up until about 2 weeks ago. My battery drains itself completely within a few hours of unplugging it after being fully charged, so tomorrow I'm going to send my iPod into Apple to be replaced. So if you're sure that your iPod has been plugged in long enough to fully charge and you are still having this issue, you should call up AppleCare or go to the iPod Service Website to get your iPod replaced: http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Quite a lot of people with one-month-old 20GB color iPods have been having these same kinds of problems with charging. I'm beginning to believe that a bad batch of 20GB iPods was manufactured in July. Hope I helped.

  • Converting videos to play on iPod takes away sound

For some reason, every time I convert a video in iTunes to play on my iPod, the sound is removed. The original video and the converted video will both play in iTunes, and the original video will have the sound and the converted video will not. Obviously, when I move the converted video to the iPod, the sound still doesn't play.
I've downloaded a few video podcasts (the Strong Bad e-mails) in iPod format already, and they work just fine. It's just ones I convert manually in iTunes that have this problem.

Quicktime doesn't play "muxed" video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.
    See:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302588
You need a 3rd party converter such as Handbrake, or MPEG Streamclip to convert the video file.
The file must meet the following specifications to play correctly.
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    -or-
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats.
Incidentally, the forum for the iPod 5th gen (iPod video) is here.

This is the forum for the older color iPod (the one that used to called the iPod photo).

  • Already own a 4g 20gb - Purchasing a new 20gb color

I'm going to be purchasing a new 20gb color iPod to replace my current 4gen 20gb. Will my iTunes automatically load onto the new iPod? Is there anything special I need to do?

You will need to format the iPod for Windows since all new iPods are Mac formatted.
Use the iPod updater, connect the iPod when prompted (not before), and follow the set up procedure.
After that, you should be good to go.

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media.  You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else.  As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC.  Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

  • We are evaluating the use of iPod touch devices to record best practice videos on our manufacturing floor and to post to an internal Moodle web site. How can you upload a video from the iPod touch to a site other than YouTube?

We are evaluating the use of iPod touch devices to record best practice videos on our manufacturing floor and to post to an internal Moodle web site. How can you upload a video from the iPod touch to a site other than YouTube? The Moodle upload interface is expecting a file selection dialog box like windows or OSX. I do not want to have to go through an intermediary step of messing with a pc.
    Thanks!

It should be around 7 and a half gigs. In iTunes, across the bottom there should be a bar that show how much storage is being used and by what. (music, movies, apps, etc.) To make music take up less room, you can check the box to make it convert the music to 128kbps AAC. This lowers the quality, but with most earbuds and speakers, you can't even tell the difference.
The iPod touch has parental controls built in. You'll find them in Settings. I think they only work for enabling/disabling Safari, Mail, YouTube, and App Store. Here's an app that does more: http://www.mobicip.com/online_safety/ipod_touch

  • What are the movie to iPod video settings?

I wonder, what are the exact video settings corresponding to selecting "Movie to iPod" when exporting?
The settings left to consider for Movie to MPEG-4 when using H.264 320 x 240 are:
    Bitrate: ? kbps
Optimized for: CD / Fetch / Stream
    Frame rate
    Sync every ? frames
    And the advanced video settings:
Limit description to: Main, Extended, Baseline
    Encoding: Best / Fast

After a bit of testing I think that a video rate of 622 kbps is used when selecting the internal Movie to iPod export option.
This results in 750 kbps when audio is 128 kbps.
Short videos in iTunes Music Store use 622 kbps video rate (Michael Jackson Billie Jean and Bad, Pixar For the Birds).
Longer videos used 570 kbps video rate (Michael Jackson Thriller, ABC - Lost).
However my original question was what settings to use to match the Movie to iPod export option.

  • Where can I buy a charger for the 20GB ipod A1059?

Does anyone know where to get a charger for the ipod 20GB A1059?

I believe that is a 4th gen iPod.  When you say "charger," do you mean the USB docking cable?  Or do mean a USB power adapter that you connect to a wall outlet to charge the iPod?
If it's the docking cable, it's the standard USB docking cable
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA591G/C/apple-30-pin-to-usb-cable
If you happen to have a Mac with a FireWire port, the 4th gen iPod actually ALSO works (better) over a FireWire connection.  But you'll have to look for an old FireWire docking cable on eBay (or other online source).
If you are asking about a USB power adapter, this is the lowest power version from Apple, and it works with the 4th gen iPod.
