Video timing messed up FCE 4.0

I captured my video at 29.97 fps. I created my project and edited it so every looks exactly the way I want it in the canvas window.
When I export Quicktime movie, the results are not the same as what I see in the canvas video. The video seems to have different in and out points for the clips in the video.
It look like the slip tool was used, to different extents, on the clips before the export.
I have recreated the project and I have not been able to get the correct export.
The export is from the File -> Export -> Quicktime Movie... and I choose to include Audio and Video, Markers - None and check Make Movie Self-Contained.
What settings could I look at to find out why the video is messed up?

The solution to my problem is to import the original capture movie into FCE 4.0, then export as Quicktime.
The new file that you just exported should be used to make clips from instead of the original capture.

  • Importing Sony DVDirect Video on DVD into FCE

    Hello...good wishes,
I've been recording video from a Canon XL2 directly to DVD using a Sony VRD-VC20 DVDirect DVD Burner. When I try to import this video material into Final Cut Express, FCE does not recognize the format.
Apple Support says that the XL2 Camcorder is a supported device in FCE, but is not able to be conclusive regarding video recorded to DVD using the Sony DVDirect Burner.
The only way I've found to get any of this video into FCE is to play the DVD's in a standard DVD player' record the video back onto DV tape, and import them through the XL2. This is a daunting, funky proposition given the hours and hours of video I need to edit - and I worry about degradation of quality using this process.
Are there any third party drivers written out there or do any of you have ideas how I can get this video from DVD to FCE?
    Thanks~

I use a Sony VRD-VC20 to burn Tivo recordings and VHS tapes to DVD. I just picked up a program called Cinematize2. It's a DVD clip extractor that retails for about $50 US. It allows you to set an in and out point on a DVD and extract the clip into a format compatible with FCP/FCE. Previously I used MPEG Streamclip 1.3.1 which allows you to export mpeg2 files to Quicktime, AVI, or DV format for use in FCP/FCE. Mpeg Streamclip also allows you to set in and out points before exporting. The link to download MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 is: http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html.
In order to use the MPEG2 playback and converter feature you will also need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2) for about $30 US. If you have either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don't have to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/download).

  • CP6 HTML5 publish, edit video timing

We are attempting to upgrade a couple of 5.5 projects in CP6 to test video playback.  We use "edit video timing" to place segments of video on each slide.  Is this approach supported in CP6 when publishing to HTML5?  We have not been able to get it to work as expected.
Also, does anyone know if the issue in 5.5 that causes audio dropout when Flash threads reach ~100?  We encounted this several times when using 5.5 and using video on multiple slides..
    Thanks
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,
Edit Video Timing is supported in CP6 when publishing to HTML5.
Could you please share your project, if you are still facing the issue.
Please find a small demo on the same.
    Thanks,

  • Best Streamclip settings for iPhone 4 Video - to edit in FCE

First, the problem: iPhone 4 records HD video in h.264. But Final Cut Express doesn't have sequence settings for editing h.264 or iPhone video clips.
The solution: I'm using Streamclip to convert all of my iPhone 4 videos to a format FCE lets me edit in.
Question: What are the optimal settings to insure that my final output retains quality almost equal to the original video shot on my iPhone? (More specifically, I plan on uploading to Youtube as a HD video).
I've read somewhere that I should convert to Quicktime Movie format, with Apple Intermediate Codec 720p 30fps. Is that the best compression type to convert to for editing iPhone 4 videos in FCE? If so, how should the other settings in streamclip be jiggered? For instance, does it make much difference if I set the Quality slider to 100% (As opposed to the default at 50%?) What about audio compression settings?
(P.S. I think it's very annoying that I can't directly edit a video from iPhone 4 on another consumer Apple product, the FCE. Does FCP let me directly edit h.264/iphone 4 videos?)

The slider makes no difference as AIC is variable bit rate within a specific range. No audio compression in FCE ever. Uncompressed stereo 48k, the video standard sample rate.
It would be truly miraculous if FCE worked with iPhone media as the current version predates it by three years, which in computer lifetimes is two generations, basically the equivalent of your grandfather having developed an app for a smartphone when he was a young man. FCP is a mere year old, well before the iPhone did video. Furthermore, if you'd read the forums, you'd see that H.264 is an acquisition and delivery forward. It is not used in production. The codec is not suitable for efficient production and really should never be used there. It's very unfortunate that camera manufacturers have taken the cheap way out and used this codec, rather than actually developing and using a suitable intraframe production codec.

  • Edit Video Timing: default all slides to end of timeline

    Hello,
I'm working with Captivate to time some slides with portions of a video. Workflow:
    1) Insert PowerPoint slides
    2) Insert Video
    3) Edit Video Timing, line up slides to corresponding times
Is there a way to default all the slides to be at the end of the presentation instead of the beginning? I'm constantly dragging 20-30 slides around, when it would be much easier to put them at the end, move the scrubber to my desired time, and then place the next slide with the "move the next marker to the playhead position" button.
Also is there a way to change the Edit Video Timing timeline to be in min, sec instead of just seconds?
    Thanks!

You say : "I need the audio to stay where it is"
Don't forget that, concerning the audio (or anything else for that is "connected" to the primary storyline), you can always change the "connection lines" so it's not attached to a clip that might be deleted or moved downstream.
You can for instance temporarily move the "connection line" to a clip that is before the clip you're about to move (or delete). If you re-connect the line to a clip that stays still, well, the connected clip won't move :-) !
    Just use Ctrl Opt Clic
and clic on a clip that doesn't move. The "connection line" will move and be attached to this new clip. (and not to the clip that is moved downstream or deleted).
    Very useful.

  • Captivate 5 freezes when opening edit video timing

When I insert a video slide and go to Properties > Video > Edit Video Timing,  Captivate freezes and I need to restart the program. I first played around with feature about three weeks ago and did not experience a problem. Is there something in a recent update that is now causing this issue?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi there,
Not sure why it is happening to you all of a sudden. Can you restart captivate with fresh set of preferences.
    1. Close Captivate.
    2. Delete "Captivate 5" folder from "C:\Users\userName\AppData\Local\Adobe\" location
    3. Restart captivate and try the workflow you mentioned.
    Let me know.

  • Video Plays Twice After FCE Encode To iPhone

I have an AIC video I made in FCE that is only 17 seconds long, and I encoded it for the iPhone with FCE Quicktime Conversion selecting "MPEG-4" as follows:
    MP4
    H.264
    900 KBPS
    480 X 320
    30 frame rate
    VIDEO Option Selected was:
    baseline checked
I got it synced up and transferred to iPhone and it plays nicely, but it plays twice? It's like the video is in repeat mode. At first I thought it was a setting in my iPhone 3GS, but under the iPod video settings there is nothing that says repeat for the video.
Where did I go wrong, is it some I did within the FCE encoding or is it a setting on the iPhone that I may be missing?

I am actually using 480 X 270, I made a typo when I wrote the full resolution of the iPhone, and yes it plays twice and then stops. I finally manage to fix this. I placed the video in another iPhone, and it played normally, so I determined it had to be something on my iPhone, but no repeat was selected? I simply did an iPhone reboot, and now it plays normally.
Now I need to find out why my FCE iPhone settings output such a bad resolution compared to the method I used here.

  • What format must video be in for fce?

what fomat must video clips be in for fce?

If you have appropriate QuickTime Components installed ...many different types of files can be imported directly into FCE. Basically everything that can be played in QuickTime Player.
Perhaps true as far as merely importing material into FCE.  But that's not the same as successfully editing, rendering & exporting final results with FCE.
Many, many users have rued the day they made the mistake of importing unsupported video formats & codecs into FCE.  And too often the problems only show up after hours/days/weeks of editing, only to find out upon final rendering or exporting that the effects don't work, frame sizes don't match, results are all pixellated, stuttery, off color, or the video just doesn't play.
While FCE is based on QuickTime, it does not provide support for all the various types of video & audio formats/codecs that QuickTime itself supports.  Perian or no Perian.
FCE was designed to natively edit only QuickTime/DV (NTSC or PAL) and QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec video.  (HDV & AVCHD are transcoded into QuickTime/AIC during capture.)  Using other containers and/or codecs can be a quick way to get a major headache.

  • Editing Slide Video Timing in CP5

I'm experimenting with editing the timing for slide video in CP5.  I have the video on one slide and now I want to distribute it over other slides but not equally like it does when asked when you first bring a video in.  I want to use the edit video timing from the Properties Inspector.  When I open the video timing and then try to slide the window on the screen it disappears and CP5 freezes.  Anyone else experience this issue?
    Thank you,
    Susan

    Hi,
Foubnd my own answer to this (although the preview is still a problem)...
My answer was to open a 2nd copy of CP....and view side by side :-)

  • Edit video timing "ghost frame"

Building a project with narrator video used throughout course.  The video is one long file with individual video segments placed and timed on each slide using "edit video timing" in CP 5.5.
The problem: frequently during playback, the video referenced on a slide will display a random "ghost frame" before the correct video begins to play.  This is distracting since our design places the narrator on a clean white background.  The "ghost" appears to be a random frame from later in the video referenced on the slide.
To determine where the frame was being pulled from we put timecode on the video and recorded the screen during playback.  Attached is small video file that illustrates the problem.  Note that each playback attempt may show a different frame.  Each frame will be from the same general section of the video.
Video is F4V exported from Adobe Media Encoder.
    Appreciate any help.
    Jeff
    Video sample is at
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17217781/ghost%20frame%20on%20load.mov

Attached are the publish settings.  Based on your suggestion we published at "high" quality and tested this morning.  No apparent change in the "ghosting" problem.  We have noticed that the ghosting problem gets worse the longer the video file that is timed.  A seemingly obvious solution would be be make the video files shorter, however, using too many video files in a project causes audio dropout based on too many Flash player threads being generated.  I can point you to a long discussion thread on this if you don't know what I am referring to.
    I appreciate any other suggestions.

  • Applying video fx messes up clip

i've been editing this video on imovie, and every time i apply a video effect on a clip, the clip looks blank on the timeline. and when i hit play, it starts playing the middle part of the next clip. then it just messes up the whole timing and flow of the rest of the clips.
it can't be an "effect in - effect out" thing because i was also trying to use slow motion and it doesn't have that option. i don't know if it was because i recently installed some mac updates but the effects were working fine before the installation (unless it was just a coincidence).
help, i want to finish this video using imovie, otherwise i'd be forced to learn final cut (taking up precious time when i have a deadline). thanks!

Same happened to me (more or less) the other day. Timeline completely messed up and clips "confused" as how to appear and play.
Seems like there is some transition getting in the way and this kind of messes it all up.
I had to re-edit a clip, and I could finish my project. But the reason for all this is quite mesterious to me...

  • How to get video from DVD into FCE?

    Hi,
I have a DVD which I got from a childhood friend. The DVD contains a compilation of old film clips (her family had old super 8 movies transferred to DVD). I'm trying to import the clip (it's one long video clip, 30 mins long) into FCE for editing. But, when I try to import, all I see on the DVD is one file folder labeled VIDEO_TS; this folder contains eight files with strange suffixes, such as .IFO, .VOB, and .BUP, none of which are accessible. Anyone have any idea how I can get the files into Final Cut Express?
I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you.
    Vic

Hi again, Martin. I did the 'conversion', and it appeared something was happening (i.e. a 'progress bar' showed that something was going on, and it took about 20 mins or so. So, I figured it was doing the conversion. Once done, a 'play' button appeared, but when I pressed it, nothing happened. Does that sound like I'm missing the MPEG2 Playback Component?
Note: I noticed during the conversion an indication that the file, about 2 gigs seemed to be being created, but for the life of me, I don't know where the file went (i.e. I don't know where (or even if) it was stored on my computer). Anyways, the process seems not to have worked. I guess, as you said, I'll need to purchase the Playback Component?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Upload Videos from camera to FCE 4!! HELP

    Heyy!
So I just got Final cut express 4, and i have no idea how to upload my clips on to it!!
    Can somebody help me??
    I have a SONY Handycam DCR-SR68
--this is the camera im getting nowhttp://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=1055 1&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666294177#features
Do these cameras even work with Final Cut Express 4?
    HELP PLEASE

The HDR-PJ10 is also an AVCHD camcorder; should work with FCE fine.  But make sure you update FCE to version 4.0.1
In FCE, select the Easy Setup (Final Cut Express > Easy Setup) that matches how you shot the video in your camcorder (for example, AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60).  Then connect your camera via USB and turn it on in playback mode.  Then in FCE do File > Log and Transfer.  This will open a window that will allow you to transfer the video clips from your camcorder to FCE.
However, it sounds like you need to take the time to learn the basics of FCE.  Tom has twice suggested you read the manual  (it is the Help file that you can acces through FCE by doing Help > Final Cut Express User Manual.
You will also benefit if you get a copy of Tom's book Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop. You should also take a look at Izzy Video's Final Cut Express Tutorial videos.

  • Video Camera that is FCE friendly?

I have a JVC Everio GZ-MG37U. It records using .mod files.
Can anyone recommend a video camera that works well within iMovie and exports to Final Cut Express well?
Currently mine will import to iMovie just fine, but when exported to FCE all the pictures and video is zoomed in (ie: picture or video of girls face is zoomed into her nose).
    Thanks,
    Phil

Although it is possible, it is not a good idea to capture in iMovie and transfer it to FCE.
You should stick to one or the other.
Regarding cameras for FCE, any tape-based DV or HDV camera will be fine. AVCHD cameras using memory cards etc. will also work with FCE 4.
