Video too Bright!?!?

Copy of dkrauts post in other forum.
I have the K7N420 Pro(MS-6373) and I've tried several different monitors but no matter what I do the brightness is way too high! I've applied the latest drivers and even tried the software controls in Windows Video properties. I have to adjust the brightness to 0 and the contrast to 100 to make the picture tolerable but even then I get a washed out gray instead of pure black. Even when my montor goes into power save mode, I still get a gray screen instead of black. It seems like the video circuitry is overdriving the brightness. Is this a known problem with the integrated video chipset? any fix?
Thanks! Dave

Copy of my last post.
Well, I have got some solutions of sorts.
I found out most of the following by doing some lengthy seaches through this forum, and putting two and two together etc.  :O
Some who are more experienced will probably say, yeah I knew that!
Well anyhow, hope this contributes in some way...........
The more obvious Tab in the Display settings which is greyed out and inaccessible is in fact a separate set of settings for a clone Monitor, and this would be active if the clone Monitor was set up (I have faith in this given the other postings about this matter).
The settings you really NEED are much more difficult to find.
You need to do Display Properties > Settings > Advanced Properties > (a few more stages) > nView > Device Settings.......and FINALLY select Colour Correction from a little pop up menu.
Bingo!, there is Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, Vibrance etc.
HOWEVER, I still have a problem.
1. I have used the "secret" nView Tab above to get the Brightness down, and did a Save As a particular filename.
2. If I then use "E-Color" or "Natural Color" which came bundled with the MX420, it causes nView to eject the saved settings (goes back to Hardware default) when I complete my gamma set-up etc.
3. The nView file is also ejected (goes back to Hardware default) each time you reboot.
This is a pain, but putting nViewTweak on the Taskbar makes it quicker to reload your file.
4. I have gotten over this problem in the meantime by NOT using "E-Color" or "Natural Color" but I am fussy, and WANT to do a proper Blackpoint/Gamma/etc set-up. It would appear that the nView software expects you only to use ONE means of setting up, but I want to be able to do a proper Blackpoint/Gamma/etc set-up ON TOP of settings already saved in nView. Please note that the essence of the problem is that without the "help" of nView Brightness reduction, I CANNOT achieve "BLACK" to start with.
QUESTION: How can I get my Color Profile to work IN CONJUNCTION with nView???
If, by definition, creation of a custom Color Profile always resets the nView settings, then this is a serious shortcoming.
I don't want to have to do a workaround that involves tinkering with the Hardware Default levels if I don't have to.

  • 7D Video Too Bright

Hi, I'm fairly new to the 7D. I thought I had all my video settings correct, but when taking a video outside it is either too bright or washed out. I set all my settings in Manual mode then I saved it to a custom setting. Upon taking video, my Exposure Level Meter is automatically metering very high. I would sincerely appreciate it if anyone could point me into the right direction for correction. Thanks, Ray
    My settings are as follows;
    Quick Mode
    1920x1080 @24frames
    Shutter Speed - 1/50
    Aperture - f/2.8
    ISO - 160
    AF Point Expansion
    Landscape
    Cloudy (used for warmth)
    Evalutive
    Auto Lighting Optimizer - Off

I'm not surprised your exposure meter is telling you that your exposure is very high... if you are outside during the daytime and using those settings, then it's because it actually is very high.
When you are using 'manual' mode the metering doesn't control the exposure.  The light meter is only reporting information to you... in other words it is offering you "advice" which you can choose to take or ignore.  But the meter will not change the camera settings when you are in "manual" mode... it uses the settings YOU dial in.
I'm wondering why you chose 1/50th, f/2.8, and ISO 160.
That would produce an extremely over-exposed shot if you are outside in daytime.
In full mid-day sun, at f/16, the shutter speed can be set to the inverse of the ISO setting.  This is called the "Sunny 16 Rule".  It was a guideline developed back in the days before cameras had light meters as a way to help photographers remember common exposure settings without having to meter the light.
So at ISO 100 you can use a shutter speed of 1/100th.  But the rule goes on to say that in light overcast (this is when you have thin clouds... but you can still see objects casting a shadow) you lose 1 stop of light (half the light) and can make up for this by increasing the exposure time (e.g. switch to 1/50th) -or- by increasing the ISO (e.g. ISO 200 instead of ISO 100) -or- by opening the lens aperture by 1 full stop (e.g. switch to f/11 instead of f/16).
In moderate overcast you lose 2 stops.  Moderate overcast is when things no longer cast a shadow... but it does not yet look so dark that it seems as though it's about to storm.
In heavy overcast you lose 3 stops (when the clouds are getting fairly dark.)
But even in heavy overcast at ISO 100, three stops down from f/16 is f/5.6.  If speed the shutter up to 1/200th then you can get down to f/4.  If you speed the shutter up to 1/400th then you can get down to f/2.8.  (and this is with "heavy" overcast).

  • Qiucktime video too bright when finished!

Why is the final Quicktime video always a lot brighter than it looks while I am working on it in FCP?
    Thanks.

I don't know. I need to do some testing.
I posed the same questions recently here (and was surprised no one chimed in with a definitive 'answer'):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2469123&tstart=0
My guess is that I'd turn off the FCP feature in QT7 (and only use QT7 for the features it has but QT10 does not), but be aware that QT7 videos look a bit different even with that turned off.

  • Video too bright! What did I do wrong?

The following was shot using a Canon GL2 inside a theater. The stage lights reflected so much the colors and details became washed out. I can't even fix it in Final Cut Pro. What did I do wrong? The camera was set on "Easy Recording" so I know white balance was automatically set.
    Here are some shots
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7buysQTMPg
Each shot is followed by an attempt to correct the image. As you can see, I wasn't successful.

Sorry, I'm a complete beginner to this line of work
It's a good thing you didn't decide to be a doctor or mechanic or ...
You should probably try to work for a local production company before trying to tackle any jobs by yourself. Especially if people are depending on you to deliver an acceptable product. That will give you the opportunity to learn how to shoot properly and learn the ins and outs of a video camera.
As Alchroma said, you white balance manually BEFORE the performance. During the performance you manually control the focus and iris (and panning and zooming).
Spotlight mode isn't infallible. In fact, it may not be able to handle stage lighting very well at all. Learn how to properly operate the camera you've chosen before committing to doing any work of this nature for pay.

  • Final rendering of video is low quality and too bright

Here is the link to my original video clip, the video clip in the project, and the final rendered copy all on my monitor at the same time:
    http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t63/shadon1nja/FixingRenderQuality_zps124306a5.png
Here is the text of each video when fullscreened screened:
    http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t63/shadon1nja/RenderText_zpsd1240701.png
The picture got downsised which makes it harder to see the issue, but here is most of the it:
The final copy is lower quality and way too bright. Noticibly too bright. The clean darks turn into rough gray, and the quality is noticibly lower as well. I have checked the "use maximum render quality" and tried exportiing in AVI and MP4, and nothing is fixing it. Any ideas?

First of all, what type of file do you need?  If you're looking for lossless quality then I would suggest exporting a quicktime file with the Animation codec or some other lossless codec.  However, these type of files are huge and they might not play back on your desktop.  But, if you're just going to put this video on the internet when you're finished with it then I would suggest starting with one of the Youtube or Vimeo H.264 presets and modifying it to match your clip.  It still won't look as good as your original, but you can't expect miracles when working in SD and exporting to H.264, which is a very lossy codec to begin with.  If you want to try exporting to a lossless Quicktime or AVI, then change the settings so they look something like this:

  • Nikon D300s images too bright and interlaced.

So this is my first time shooting and editing video and I'm getting some weird errors.
I'm running Windows 7, and when I view the video files after downloading them from the card, the whites all seem too bright and blown out, no matter which media player I use. When I import the videos into Premiere CS5, the whites are not so blown out and there's detail.
BUT when I'm done editing and save the file as a HD H.264 720p 24fps file, the whites are again blown out AND there's obvious interlacing.
How do I get my whites to not be blown out, and how do I get the output to be deinterlaced?

You've told others on this forum to use professional monitors.
Not everyone has access to a professional monitor. I will never have access to a professional monitor. Not everyone is a video professional and not everyone cares to be one. I just want a video that looks good on YouTube. A professional monitor is not an option.
All I know is that on the same monitor, when playing the originals and the final exported file the whites look noticably more blown out than they do when previewed within Premiere.
The D300s only shoots in progressive, but when I export from Premiere (making sure Progressive is selected) the video looks interlaced.

  • Monitor too bright

    Hi,
    I'm re-purposing a quad core 2.8Ghz Mac Pro with Mac OS 10.6.8.
I'm having a problem in that the monitor/screen image is too bright, even with the monitor controls set to minimum.
When I use the monito calibrator in System Prefs, the black/grey/white oval graphic is very very very light and washed out and there's no way I can adjust the monitor to get the black bit black.
This monitors (2 of them) worked perfectly on the G5 it came from, black was black white was paper-white and it worked well for photo editing - printed results were a good match with the image on the monitors. However when I plug them into this MacPro they're virtually unusable.
Window borders, furniture (buttons, tabs etc) and the desktop (Mac OS bits???) seem fine - it's just the inner part of windows (the bit controlled by the application rather than the Mac OS???) that is too biright and wahsed out.
It's as if the graphics card is misbehaving. Is there a way to "reset" the graphics card?
Note; I'm not sure if this actually has anything to do with it - I noticed this happening when I installed Illustrator CS2 (yes, I know, its old) and the installed asked permission to install Rosetta. It may be coicidence that I just noticed it at this stage or it may be the cause. How do I temorarily remove or disable Rosetta?
Both monitors can't suddently have become faulty, so I'm doscounting an issue with the monitors.
Mac OS 10.6.8, Quad 2.8 GHz Mac Pro
Monitors are connected with digital cables direct to the digi ports (no VGA converters)
    Many thanks,
    G.

Many thanks to both responders. Various points for both:
The graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT.
The OS is a fresh install on a newly reformatted main drive. The old OS is on the secon'd drive but has been moved into a separate folder called "Old System".
Apps are all new/clean installs from original disks, then updates applied.
It seems implausible that the drive partitioning system is affecting the video output, is this likely to be the problem?
I know CS2 is old, but I don't have a choice and CS2 was running OK on the PPC Mac and these 2 monitors.
The problem is always present whether I have CS components running or not. Quark 8 is too bright, as is Preview and all other apps.
Does the graphics card have a non-volatile memory for settings? What if it has previously been config'd badly; can it be reset?
Can I uninstall Rosetta to see if this is the issue?
    Thnaks again, both.
    G.

  • Washed out colors - brightness too bright - fix?

    Hello!
Well, I'm currently running a 400 mhz, slot loading, iMac DVSE (spring 2000), equipped with 10.4.8, 512 MB ram, and an 80G hard drive!
However, now that i've upgraded to tiger, and am using this old machine far more, I've noticed that the display looks a bit funky - the colors seem a bit light - particuarly the blacks.
I've used the color calibration app, but although better, the blacks are still way to bright - a sort of dark, charcoal gray. The reason I think it's the brightness is that I have an old CRT attached to my Powerbook that when turned to maximum brightness, has the same gray-blacks. Droping the brightness to around 75% gives the colors their true, deep hues. This is nice, considering my desktop is a rotation of Hubble Space Telescope pics! I have turned down the brightness as far as the displays system pref will allow -but it's too bright.
I know that one of the CRT iMacs has an internal brightness dial somewhere - but I don't remember which model or where it is/how to access. Does anyone know? I'd be a good fix. I'm willing to open up the iMac if neccessary - I need to install a PRAM battery too!
    Thanks,
    -Dan
PS: When attached to the external CRT, the blacks look great - just like on the Powerbook - so it's not an internal video issue with the iMac that I know of.

    Hello!
    Yes - PRAM doesn't help.
PRAM batt is dead, has been for a while. I do need one soon...
I'll try a FW drive boot (has 10.4.7 on it), to see if that helps - but it's been bright like this for quite a while. I never really noticed, because before Tiger, all the iMac was used for was a iTunes and OS 9 games playing, weather radar checking machine. Now I'll do work on it during the day - say, when I'm home between classes and need to work on a lab report, but don't want to unpack my powerbook for just one hour. Not only that, but with these space-desktops, the brightness is just more visible. Hmm.... I wonder if I turned up the gamma to far during calibration.... checks
But the question still stands: is there any sort of internal control for brightness? It may have been the tray-loading iMacs that had that.
    Thanks,
    Dan.

  • Adjust video playback brightness on-the-fly...?

I've just moved over from a 5G iPod to an iPhone, and had a question about a certain aspect of video playback...
I watch a lot of video on my iPod (now iPhone), and I'm a stickler for saving my battery life, so I always turn the screen brightness right down to its lowest viewable point when watching video.
I also watch video in bed, with the lights off, so turning the brightness right down still makes the videos perfectly viewable.
Sometime though, of course, I have to turn the brightness up for scenarios where I'm in a brighter environment.
The way to do this on the 5G iPod is, at any time when watching a video, hit the centre button twice (once takes you to the scrubber) and then scroll left or right for dimmer or brighter. Easy. Job done. And you can see the results right there and then, so you can adjust it to just right.
Now unless I'm mistaken, there's no similar way of doing this on the iPhone, and that you can NOT adjust video brightness on the fly...
The only way to adjust brightness is, while watching a video, to go to Home > Settings > Brightness > Drag it > Home > iPod > Video.
Surely everyone can see that's a MUCH more laborious way of doing things!?
Even then, you can't be sure you got the brightness setting adjusted correctly, because a bright vivid animation, like The Simpsons, is much more visible and clear on a low brightness setting than, say, TV shows of Magnum P.I. with their 80's "converted-from-video" feel.
And believe me, I know, because those 2 examples are real-world scenarios for me.
And before anyone says it, yes I DO know about the "Auto-Brightness" setting, but I've tried it, and 9 times out of 10 it's too dim for my liking in a brightly-lit room (especially on the Magnum P.I.'s) and it's too bright in bed with the lights off (especially on the Simpsons)!
So I suppose if I'm making this post a question, it would be:
Is there no method of changing video playback brightness on-the-fly, while the video is still playing on-screen?

    Brett,
You've been around on these forums long enough to understand what is and isn't allowed by the TOA, so I'm fairly sure you know (I don't know but could make a guess as well).
In general this whole thread could be deleted... except that you asked a question at the very end of your first post (which was answered). That's all these forums are for, asking and getting questions answered. Editorial comments, rants and raves are not what we are here for.

FC/e supports only a few 'standards': DV (as from miniDV cams), HDV (from miniDV devices), AVCHD (from most devices) and with a little trick, described on my website AVCHD-light (720p, as from many compact-stills) ..

some Flips are supported by iMovie, which you can abuse as a converter tool.
but 'non video standard' (=read 'video' as 'in TV') formats, resolutions and codecs ...
    a) manual conversion = less convenient
    b) loss of 'quality', e.g. when you blow-up tiny 480x320/15fps into video..

  • FCP Filter control brightness? - washed out - too bright?

We filmed a high school jazz choir presentation, 4 -HD canon HFS 20 cameras. We had the white balance set to incandescent. The video was edited using multiclip. It all looks very good, on all the close up cameras. The wider shots look a little washed out or too bright. The lighting on the stage was pretty bright, so if a student had a white shirt on and the lights were directed at his/her head, it kind of blended together slightly. In general it looks pretty good, but I was wondering if there was a way to cut that (overexposure?) down using FCP, or is there something I need to do when we film.

    Hello Jeff,
generally you should avoid overexposing your footage. Most cameras have a "Zebra" that will indicate areas over 100 IRE. Blown out video may not be fixable in post because the information in the overexposed areas may be lost. You can try the following:
    • 3-way color corrector; easiest approach but not very powerful
    • take the footage into Color for grading; this is much more sophisticated as you can work on selected areas.
    • if you don't want go through Color you could give this tool a shot: http://www.pistolerapost.com/pluginz/captains.zip
    hope this helps

  • IMac 24" Display too bright

Even after dimming down the brightness of the iMacv 24 inch screen to lowest setting, I still find that its way too bright for my eyes. I have tried to use Shades for Mac OSX and it works fine, however for Windows Vista, I cant find any solution to dim down the brightness without changing my Color profile. Anyone out there can help me with this?

A recent Apple software update for the Alum iMacs may be addressing the brightness issue. In a previous post the following was said regarding the details of what's in the update...
After opening the installer package in "Pacifist" (an installer package viewer /extractor) utility), I >noted that revised ATI drivers (last revisions in iMac Software Update 1.0 a few weeks back) are the >main feature. The GLEngine translate item also updated together with a DisplayProductID-9c6a file.
The above may mean that the ATI HD2600 PRO video card may now run at full specification (a la >Vista)! The display product file may mean improvements to the 20" Al iMac's display..."
And in another post someone was also asking...
anyone notice their brightness lowered recently?
which also referenced this same Apple Update. Please let us know if it helps!

I got my ipad2 replaced yesterday. And this new ipad started giving me problem by crashing aps. Then I restored the ipad twice but the problem was still there. I called apple and they fixed it by doing Reset All Settings. But now I have this weird problem. When I open Mail the screen flickers random blue and gray appeared on the screen. I took a video too. There is no way for anyone here to know if your replacement iPad is a refurbished unit.  Per Apple's replacement policy, replacements can be refurbished units.  If you feel the unit is not working correctly, take it back, let them check it out and if found defective, they will replace that unit.

  • Can watching videos too often on Macbook Pro "wear down" the screen?

I watch most of my TV shows on my new macbook pro, and my mother just informed me that if you watch videos too often on a mac, that the screen can apparently wear down and die. Is this true? I'm not sure exactly what she meant by that or what could happen to my computer, but it doesn's sound exactly correct. Thanks!

Back in "the old days" when we all had green letters on black screens like in "War Games" (Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy) there were problems with "burn in" which was caused by the fact that only certain parts of the screen got used because the displays were text only. This is kind of like a prehistoric version of the problem with early plasma displays. Efforts to save CRT screens led to the creation of the ever-popular "Screen saver."
Most moms don't track display technology, so the notion remains that all video monitors are just shinier versions of last century's 15"/50 lb. wonders. Not so. Today's monitors will wear out, but most will be killed by their users long before that. Modern monitors CAN go off in color, loose brilliance, etc. over time  but not specifically from movies.  Notice I said movies, not video. The way we use computers these days, pretty much everything is video.
    Keep calm and surf on.

Unfortunately, that's the way the cookie crumbles nowadays. Sir Jony Ive's GUI design for iOS7 has been met with much skepticism (to say the least). But until the company sees the compelling need for an adjustment or reversal, it "ain't happenin' ". So amble over to the feedback page ( http://www.apple.com/feedback/ ) and make your displeasure known to the company, OR make it known by not purchasing its products. Because as long as the iGadgets continue selling as fast as they can make them, they will see no need for change.
BTW, do note you are NOT talking to Apple here. This is just a user-to-user forum.
Edit: for now, you can also try out any of the alternate calendaring apps available in the App Store.
