Video Track  Template - set up??

Is it possible to set up a track template than can be applied when needed.
Example:
I would like to be able to add some images (jpeg) on a track,  set them up to use a PIP effect ( say.....  40% LL )  also possible use somewhat transparent effect too.... say   30%
I can place images and then edit EACH one.....but that is very time consuming......  so it would be nice to have some  Template option that could be applied to an entire track, and have it effect any and all items placed on that track.

Using ver 11
Thanks for the replay.  So, ok. Sounds like I can kind of do what I want, but not sure how.  Can you point me to where this is talked about in the user guide.   I did look  but assume now, I somehow missed this info.  Both options are in play here.
I.e.  I'd like to apply PIP to an entire track.  Also same with the transparently effect.
Taking this to next obvious set,  would these technics work with all or most of the "canned" FX effects.
Again to be clear, what I have in this project is several jpegs on a track that I want to apply the same effects too.

  • Video track luminosity blend mode weirdness

Applied sharpening to a video track and set the blend mode to luminosity (so that I could put a blurry multiplied layer in between)
Now wherever the luminosity layer finds an overexposed highlight it renders as black.  If I turn down the opacity of luminoisty layer it stays black, if I switch it off it dissappears. !

    Hi Chris,
Thanks very much for your straightforward and helpful answer. So, it would appear that my simplistic understanding of the Hue blend mode as 'replacing' the hue of the underlying layer(s) is incorrect. Would a fair rendering of what the Hue blend mode actually does be as follows?
"The Hue blend mode will perform a direct replacement of the hue in the underlying layer(s). The brightness and saturation of the underlying layer(s) will not be affected *unless* the resultant hue, saturation, and brightness 3-tuple would result in an illegal HSL combination, in which case the saturation and brightness of the resultant pixels will be altered to bring the HSL values into compliance."
Also, is there a way for the Info panel to display HSL values?
    Thanks again,
    Matt

  • How do I get the audio track to stick with the video track?

Whenever I move or cut the video track I want it's audio track to move or cut with it, how do I get them to stay together so I don't have to do double work?
This should be an easy one...Let's see who can answer first.....ready, set, GO!

Sounds like Linked Selection is switched off. Check the button in the upper right of the timeline window. Shift-L will toggle it off and on.

  • ERROR message (iDVD) 'no video tracks selected'  where is 'SHARED'

(I think everyone's asleep on the iDVD boards, so I've taken the liberties of posting here also, sorry.... ssshhhhhhh....)
My first time using iDVD (it's 5.0) --
Exported sequence from fcp as QT.....
Dropped into into 'drop zone' hit 'burn', and get "no video track defined"
I searched this forum (iDVD) and it seems I need to tweek "shared" setting.... since I made the sequence in fcp (not iMovie), where is this 'shared' menu?
    Very perplexing...
    Thanks.
    Mark

Here'w what Ken says from his article detailing iDVD:
Once you have set all your markers, set an in and out point on your Timeline, File Menu > Export. From FCP 4.5 and FCE 2, select QuickTime Movie (not 'Using QuickTime Conversion').
There is an option in the Save box, "Make Self contained". If you uncheck this box the movie that is generated will consist of pointers to your media. The export process will happen quickly and the resulting file will be small in size. This is a good choice if you will be using iDVD on the same Mac as your editing application. If you chose to "Make Self contained" the resulting movie will contain all of the media, it will take longer to export and the file size can be quite large, (about 22 gigs for a 100 minute movie). If you will be moving to a different Mac to work on iDVD then you'll need to have your movie be self contained. In either case, leave 'Recompress All Frames' unchecked.

  • Looping a video track with escape -- Bug or Pilot error?

[The next 2 paragraphs are a repeat of my previous post. I'm including them for context.]
I'm working in DVDSP 4 and have encountered a few "anomalies". I wanted to see if I am doing something wrong or if I have found a bug. I will break this into two posts because they are two different issues.
Basically I am creating a DVD that will back a live presentation. The video track is timed to approximate the length of the presentation. But I want to have several "escape hatches". If a segment does run a little long then the presentation will dump into another track that has a still image and a background music track. I don't want to pause the play, because I want full-field video and audio. I also want to advance through the presentation by simply clicking the NEXT CHAPTER button.
    [/End repeated section]
So the other problem with looping a still on a video track is escaping the loop. I've set this track's END JUMP to go to the "Chapter 1" marker of the current video program. (It's the only marker on the this timeline.) I've targeted the "Next Chapter" button to return me to my main timeline. Whether I simulate OR burn this DVD program I get the same results. The playhead does not jump tracks. Instead it returns to the start of the current timeline and begins playing again.
Is this supposed to happen? DVDSP lets me assign all these actions, and the manual and support seems to indicate this should work, but it doesn't. Not sure if this is a bug, a problem with the DVD spec, or simply my lack of knowledge. (please help)

Houghts & Aldershot -- thanks for your reply. To add a little clarity the project goes like this:
The MAIN track is 20 minutes long. If the speaker finishes a section early, he can "NEXT" to the next section (next marker). If he runs long, when he gets to the next marker the dvd will dump him into another track (Lets call it WAITING TRACK) that will "hold" (with some music) until he hits NEXT again. So far this all works.
The problem is getting OUT of the WAITING TRACK loop and back to the MAIN track. Putting a second marker near the end of this track (as Aldershot suggests) will jump me to the end of WAITING but how do I get back to the marker in MAIN? Can I just set an end Jump to go back to the marker I want in MAIN? Will the presenter then have to hit skip forward twice? (I guess I'll have to try and see.)
I guess I could target this marker in main with the MENU button, but then the presenter would have TWO buttons to worry about. I'm trying to make this as zipless as possible.
By the way, if I don't loop the WAITING track back to the first marker, this scenario works. The problem only arises if I loop back to Chapter1. Making the end of the track an infinite hold looked to be a promising option. But it seems to put the player into pause. The user must hit PLAY and then NEXT. Two buttons again.
I'll keep digging and follow up as I learn more.

  • Brightness differences between Menus and Video Tracks

I am trying to learn DVD Studio Pro 3.
My project has a "roster" menu that leads to several submenus. I want an animated transition from the "roster" menu, to each of the submenus.
I built each of the animations in After Effects. They all start with the same first frame -- the "roster" menu. Each animation has a different ending frame -- one of the submenus. I rendered the animations as QuickTime movies in After Effects.
Also in After Effects, I used the "Save frame as" menu to make a flat .PSD file of the first frame (for the "roster" menu,) and each end frame (for the submenus.)
I imported all the files into DVD Studio Pro. I laid out the menu structure, drew buttons, and connected them all the way I wanted. Each button on the "roster" menu points to the start of a track, and the End Jump of that track points to a submenu.
The logic of all this works the way I expect, both in DVD Studio Pro's simulator, and on a burnt DVD. However, there is a noticeable brightness difference between the video tracks and the menus.
How can this be, if they are derived from the same graphic source?
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)

There could be a ColorSync issue with the PSD. Either take it into Photoshop and try no ColorSync (or a different setting), or take a single frame of the video and make it last a while, and use that as a motion menu.
I have cured these differences both by changing the ColorSync settings of the PSD, and also by setting the monitor to generic RGB. That was enough to make DVD SP ignore the ColorSync settings in the PSD I was using.

  • Is there a way to see the waveform of the audio in the primary video track?

Is there a way to see the audio waveform of the audio in the video (primary) track?
Scrubbing to determine precise edit points is useful, but seeing the dialog audio waveform would be much better.
You can see the audio waveform in additional audio-only tracks, but for cutting to dialog you really need to see the primary audio waveform that's in the video track.
    Any thoughts?

    msimpson,
No. The waveforms are only visible in the two separate audio tracks.
A work around would be to use Advanced>Extract Audio command.
This command, in spite of its name, copies the audio to one of the audio tracks and sets the volume level of the audio to zero in the video track.
Now you'll have the waveform to use in editing. When you're done with it, you could delete it and raise the volume again on the video track.

  • Exporting multiple video tracks as 1 file with different effects on each track.

I am currently trying to export 3 video tracks as 1 mp4.
Each track has exactly the same footage, but with different effects to achieve a certain aesthetic.
When I view the sequence it in premiere all 3 tracks are displayed correclty.
The exported version appears to only export the uppermost track, track 3.
Track 2 and 3 have opacity set to 47%.
Track 1 opacity is set to 100%.
I have tried exporting a test project that has multiple layers and there was no problem.
I have NOT tried exporting a test project with exactly the same opacities and effects, as it's a bit time consuming. I will do so if I can't get a stisafctory solution from the forums.
The problem, I believe, is down to the layering of effects. In this case on track 3 I have procamp, which is boosting the red in 1 layer. This is the image I get once the final piece is exported - track 3's.
    So..
How do I get the effects of each layer to show properly in the export?
    and
Why is the exported version missing tracks (or the effects of tracks) 1 and 2?

You didn't answer probably the most important question: whether you're using hardware or software Mercury Playback Engine (MPE). However, since you've set Maximum Render Quality on, it's largely irrelevant.
When you're using hardware MPE or have the MRQ flag set for your export, rendering is performed with linear color. Linear color processing affects how color channels and alpha channels are composited--anything less than 100% opacity is subject to linear color processing. Check out this article for more information on linear color/linear light: Linear Light - Artbeats
Since it sounds like you're seeing the results you expect in the Program Monitor, but not export, I'll wager you're not using hardware MPE. Only by disabling the Maximum Render Quality flag on export will you be able to get results that match what you see in the Program Monitor (within reason, of course). The only way you could see the effects of linear color within Premiere would be to either use a qualified GPU that enables hardware MPE, or go into your Sequence Settings and check the "Maximum Render Quality" option and then render previews.
Please let me know if that helps resolve the issue, or at least provide a little insight into the problem.

  • Alternate between video tracks?

I am wondering if it is possible to have a QuickTime movie alternate between different video tracks. For example, we record both a speaker and their presentation. Currently, we present both side-by-side, but for portable devices, we would like to present them both in one frame so the image isn't so wide.
Is there any way to do this in QuickTime? I know you can set which video track is in the foreground and which is in the background, but I do not know how to alternate them. Is there some kind of wrapper or command/text track that could help us with this? I know we could patch something together after the fact using an editor, but I would like to keep this fairly simply and automated (i.e., record the times to switch during the live recording, and apply those to a QuickTime script or wrapper afterwards).
    Thanks!

    Yes and no.
Yes it is possible to create MOV files with multiple audio and video tracks that can be keyed to switch tracks via either the built-in language selection (in the QT Player View menu) or using sprite switches embedded in the file for use with a mouse.
No from the standpoint of possibly not serving your needs adequately. Normally the alternate track switching is keyed to changes in the audio track, so switching of audio is actually keyed to an switch in audio track. This means the simplest approach would require paired AV tracks to provide proper control. As I assume you want to be able to switch back and forth while the movie is running, there is the problem of the finite delay in the amount of time it takes to actually make the switch and the fact that sometimes the player may begin to drop frames severely. I.e., sometimes you get a smooth video switch and playback continues smoothly and sometimes you don't. Normally this is not a problem with alternate language/alternate video viewing of a movie since the user can always stop/pause playback to restore a smooth playback.
Is there any way to do this in QuickTime? I know you can set which video track is in the foreground and which is in the background, but I do not know how to alternate them. Is there some kind of wrapper or command/text track that could help us with this?
The simplest form of switching is actually built into QT. If you have QT Pro, you can set the switches very easily. In any case, I am posting a one minute sample file which you can download and to examine the switches in the Properties window (if you have QT Pro) or try playback in the QT Player to simply see how the switching works. I.e., in the case of the sample file, one track pair is keyed to "English" and the other is keyed to "French."

  • How do I command a single video track (with many clips) to an action?

    Hi,
This is my first post in this forum, and I am a beginner on FCE.
I want to take one of my video tracks and reduce the size to 1/4 and put it in the upper right corner of the screen. I want my screen split into 4 equal sections. My first track has many edit points, and I cannot seem to command the whole track to stay put in the upper right corner of the screen.
I can do it if I choose each clip in the track individually (and size it manually) but not all at once. How do I do the track all at once?
    Thanks,
    humbucker237

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You can set the scale to 25% for the first clip in timeline and place in the the upper right corner of the canvas, select it in timeline and use COMMAND-C to copy it.
Now select all remaining clips in timeline and use the paste attributes--motion command to set the scale to 25% for all clip and place them correctly.
    OR
    Use nested sequence.
Simply create a new sequence (S2) and drag your edited one (S1) (at full scale and position set to 0,0) in the new one. That's the nesting process.
From this step, ALT-double-click this sequence (S1) in timeline to open it in viewer and set the scale and position value.

  • FCPX export: Mutliple video tracks in MP4!?

    Hello
I noticed something strange today. FCPX sometimes integrates two video tracks in MP4-Files when exporting. Can anybody explain why this happens?
I exported a bunch of MP4s with different lengths out of FCPX using "Share for Apple Devices 720p". (Same settings for every file: 1280x720px, Format: Computer, Quick Conversion)
Then I tried to import them in Compressor. Some worked, some didn't. So I started to have a closer look at them, trying to find the differences.
    MediaInfo revealed the following:
    Normal MP4-File, working in Compressor:

  • Button on video track via subtitles work but not for audio via story

    Hello,
I have a video track with two different audio (two versions of music). I have created two buttons within a subtitle to have them directly on the video
if i make a link to the menu, the button work correctly. But in fact i make a link to two different stories, each with the different audio track
this way it does not work ..
    any idea ?

    Hey Thierry Arnould,
    You could use scripts.
Create 2 scripts each with the function "Set System Stream"
and select the "audio streams" which you want to use.
Then add as Startscript to the corresponding story.
    hope that helps

I have two video tracks. Everytime that I move the video on either track it has to re-render all the affected areas of the movie, but all I need it to do is switch to the highest video track. I don't need it to render at all. I'm sure I never had this problem before. Was this introduced by a newer version of Final Cut or have I introduced a new setting? This version is much slower on my C2D than it ever was on my iMac G3.

Check item properties for your clips and see if they match item properties for the sequence. They should be exactly the same.

  • Video tracks disappear when changing between sequences in premiere CS6

Dear people, can you please help me find out why video tracks disappear when changing between sequences in premiere CS6.
All it shows is the audio track and it is maximized to the first frame of the sequence. Video tracks are there but hidden - although video IS showing up in the program monitor.
When I pull the tracks down in the timeline window using the dividing line between the video and audio tracks and set the sequence work area back it works fine, however it is a great annoyance having to do this every time when i swap between sequences.
Can anybody please suggest a solution to this?
    I'd appreciate any help.

This is the audio tracks problem i cannot overcome:

(basically every type of audio i drop/place onto the timeline becomes left channel only, regardless of it being music or camera-recorded audio.
In the source monitor everything plays back just fine, but when placed to the timeline - it becomes LEFT only.
Weird.... (or am I and not it)
