VIDEO_TS folders

can i or what happens when you try to burn 2 VIDEO_TS folders on the same dvd? thanks.

Yeah, thats not going to work.. it will only play the one the is name VIDEO_TS. Since you can't have 2 folders with the same name in the same directory, then one will have to be named slightly different. It's not going to see that one.

  • DVD's with no VIDEO_TS folders- How do I back them up?

Recently a few friends have been sending me disks made on stand alone DVD recorders. The DVD's usually have the name "DVDVIDEORECORDER". Surprisingly, these DVD's have no VIDEO_TS folders, though they play fine in a DVD player or my Mac. I went searching for invisible VIDEO_TS folders and couldn't find them either. My problem is that I want to make copies of them for friends. Without a VIDEO_TS folder, I can't seem to do that. The closest that I can get to it is to use "Handbrake" and create an mp4 from the DVD and then encode that mp4 back into a DVD. Have other people seen these DVD's? I seen many more than a few and from many different sources. Where are the video files kept on them? Can they be backed up? One of my DVD's is scratched and I want to duplicate it before it becomes unusable. Any idea how I can do that without a VIDEO_TS folder?

Here is some more information about the DVD's. They seem to be UDF- Universal Disk Format, whatever that means.
    Name : DVDVIDEORECORDER
    Type : Volume
    Disk Identifier : disk11
    Mount Point : /Volumes/DVDVIDEORECORDER

  • Video_TS Folders and file compatability

Hello, Why is it that my Imac will not recognize the files inside Video_TS folders, such as the .VOB and .BUP files? These are normal DVD files that I know work in Windows but then again I am new to the world of Mac's. Is something I need to open them?

I play my Video_TS folders using DVD player, a standard program on you Mac.
Just open the program and from the File menu select "Open DVD Media" - navigate to the Video_TS folder and select it. It should play just as if you had the DVD in the drive.

  • How do I burn several Video_TS folders onto one DVD?

A cousin had some very old (as early as 1929!) film converted and burned to three DVDs, of them short (the total run time is under an hour). What's the best way to combine them into one DVD so I can duplicate it and send to other family members? I'm copying the VIDEO_TS files but am leery of re-naming them for fear of confusing Toast 7.
Can iDVD6 help do this more simply?

    How fabulous!
The old family movies I converted to DVDs were only from 1958!
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS folders back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip (you just drop the TS folder into the Streamclip window):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
(Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal. )
Once in iMovie you can edit the 'stray bits' out, have each old movie as a chapter etc.
Then send it to iDVD for burning, or use Toast.

  • Playing VIDEO_TS folders using DVD Player?

    Hello,
Right before I updated to 10.4.3, I had started using Mac the Ripper to download all of my DVDs to my external FW drive so that they all would be instantly available to me. They played just fine in DVD Player (I just chose File, Open, and chose the appropriate VIDEO_TS foler).
However, since I upgraded to 10.4.3, anytime I try to open one of those folders in DVD Player, it says "media type not supported" or something to that effect.
Do I need to reset the preferences on DVD Player or something to get it to work again?
    Thanks!

I haven't updated the DVD Player from 4.6 to 4.6.1 as I noticed some people were experiencing difficulty playing DVDs with it.
A couple of things you can try are to drag the VIDEO_TS folder to the DVD Player icon to open it or you can try to force-open it by holding down Cmd & Option keys and dragging the folder to the DVD Player icon.

  • Video_TS folders and subtitles

    Hey everyone,
I have been trying to figure out a way to get the best result for my media center as well as simply taking movies with me on the road with optimum quality. I have looked at Handbrake, but even from a time perspective it takes like 2x the time to encode with Handbrake versus ripping with Mactheripper.
I have run into a bit of a snag that I am hoping someone may have the answer to; as I am only needing the movies, not the menus, I have been using MTR's "Main Feature Only" function and made sure that I only have the audio tracks and subtitle tracks in English. The forced subtitles do not appear in Front Row 2.0 at all. If I do the same rip, but as a "Full Disc Extraction" the forced subtitles are there and acting properly.
Thoughts? I really don't want to waste the extra space (and time) with the menu systems, what may MTR or Front Row not be doing right with the Main Feature Only function?
    Thanks!

DVDs use a bitmap image to draw the subtitles. If you rip the entire DVD with the DVD menu, then you can via the DVD menu activate an instruction to turn on the subtitles. If you only rip the title then you lose the menu to do this. iTunes, Apple TV (and iPhone) can now be told to 'always' show subtitles but they do not support playing DVDs or VOB files. Front Row has no options at all regarding turning on or off subtitles, when playing a DVD it is the DVD software that does this.
If you have a DivX and a separate .srt text subtitle file then Perian will automatically display the subtitles in software that uses QuickTime (including Front Row).
You can use HandBrake or Submerge to permanently burn subtitles in to the movie image, but this requires encoding the DVD to another format which as you mentioned takes time.
If you want a media manager friendly front-end, and you do not want to have to store the entire DVD, then Front Row is not the right choice. Instead you should look at Plex which is a Mac version of XBMC.
Plex will let you add a collection of either main feature only Rips of DVDs, or even better for this, it will also let you add standalone VOB files (which MTR can make by doing a Title/Chapter rip and merging the chapters, this produces a single VOB file for each rip). These VOB files still contain all the video unconverted, all the audio (even multiple audio tracks), and all the subtitles.
However, Plex (or XBMC) will allow you through it's built-in controls to turn on or off the subtitles, and select alternate audio tracks, even without the DVD menu.
I have used Plex with TV episodes ripped from DVDs and saved as individual VOBs (no VIDEO_TS needed) and it works great. I believe VLC should also be able to play these and possibly let you select the subtitles, but it does not have a library management capability.

  • In the DVD VIDEO_TS folder can I edit a link for redirect?

I trashed my DVD studio files and movie clips and don't want to have to recapture and edit in final cut pro because one of the links on the DVD isnt directed to the right place.
Is there a way that i can do that in some type of editor with the files DVDSP created in the VIDEO_TS folder?
OR, is there a utility that will allow me to recover the files i trashed?

www.mydvdedit.com & www.dvdafteredit.com are two Mac tools that let you edit Video_TS folders (makee sure to make copies before working on them.) mydvdedit is shareware while dvdafteredit if full commercial software.
There are also ways of capturing assets off the DVD/conversion utlilities. MpegStream Clip and HandBrake are two items which work on unencrypted DVDs

The Movie part of Front Row does not itself support playing VIDEO_TS folders. As other replies indicated, the Movie playback part of Front Row uses QuickTime to play video files, this means that normally Front Row will only play .mov, mpg, m4v, and .avi files. Even though you can installed Flip4Mac to play WMV files, Front Row does not recognise that (WMV) file extension.
As you will note the VIDEO_TS folders contain .VOB files which again will normally be ignored.
Yes, you can buy the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime component but frankly it is a bit of a con. It will let you open .VOB files in QuickTime Player but it will not play any sound at all since it does not support multiplexed MPEG2 files (which .VOB files are). Even ignoring the sound issue, Front Row will still ignore .VOB files whether you have the MPEG2 component or not.
However there is a possible solution since you are not alone in wanting to do this (even if Apple are unwilling to help).
Go to this site and download DVD Assist http://mysite.verizon.net/resohjb1/Projects.html
They way it works is to spot your accessing a VIDEO_TS folder and then trick Front Row in to playing it via the Apple DVD Player application. As a result sound and all normal DVD features will also work.
Personally, what I would like is for distantDVD see http://www.distantdvd.com/ to be built into Front Row. Unfortunately distantDVD does not seem to be being developed any further as it has not been updated for about a year and as I indicated, Apple seem to show no interest in adding this sort of capability.
Note: the suspected reason for Apple not doing this sort of thing is due to legal issues about copying DVDs (even for your own legal use) on to a hard disk, however this article http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070701-download-to-dvd-now-an-option-for- apple-cinemanow-others.html suggests the legal issues may soon no longer apply.
Sigh! This is an area where Microsoft Media Center still knocks the pants off any Apple based solutions (i.e. Front Row, Elgato EyeTV, Media Central, distantDVD, etc. etc. etc.). I am therefore at the moment still sticking with running Microsoft Media Center 2005 on a Mac (of course).

  • How to Play Video_TS Folder

I have over 100 Video_TS Folders on my Mac... can Apple TV send these to my TV? What about a networked DVD player... it should be able to play Video_TS Folders because they are in fact DVD's!!! I do not want to convert all my DVD's to some ridiculous Playstation format or mv4 ac3 or whatever other useless format!! Surely there is a solution for playing existing DVD files from computer over a network to my TV. Thanks for any answers.

There is a solution and I have been using it now, thanks to Andy760. The solution is described in the following thread (IRL), or you can search for "streaming AVCHD MTS files to Apple TV" in this forum.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2781188?start=15&tstart=0
Essenitlaly install "Air Video server" and you can stream any type of video from your PC or Mac to your TV through Apple TV and an iPhone or iPad. It works great..

  • DVD Video_TS & vobs on FCS

What is the best way to organize DVD content with several video, audio and subtitle tracks? We get DVD's with Video_TS structure and we are using them for VOD (Video On Demand) solutions. Is it possible to keep the content untrunscoded while fully integratint it into Final Cut Server? If the transcoding is needed, will we able to keep all the audio and subtitle tracks?

FC Server isn't going to know what to do with a DVD-Video disc. It will scan the Video_TS folders but will only give the generic white icon for VOBs, etc. It will not transcode these.

  • I need to transfer a Video_TS folder to my iPad but am unable

    Hello,
I have an iPad 2 which I use extensively in education. I have access to all my PPTs, documents, articles etc.
However I need to transfer a video_TS folder from m laptop to my iPad and am unable to do this. I tried importing the folder to iTunes but failed.
I also tried transferring it to iFiles and Dropbox but that also failed
Its' very ackward as I now have to bring both my Macbook and iPad to work.
On my Macbook the folder opens with DVD Player.
Any support would be greatly appreciated

    Hello Niel,
I used MPEG Streamclip for a Video_TS file but the resulting conversion was huge going from 2.5 GB to 8GB, far too big to fit on my iPad.
I tried Movavi trial version which worked but as I don't need to convert any more video_TS folders its pointless paying for the full version.  The trial version has  a message displayed on screen intermittently during playback of converted file. Therfore this is unsuitable too.
Is there a way of reducing video size with MPEG Streamclip? The user interface is very hard to interpret.
Also on another issue can you tell me if its safe to use 'Box' on Macs? It's similar to Dropbox but gives a bigger data allowance?
    Thank you in advance

  • Front row crashes on particular Video_TS file stored on other Mac

Hello, I have an iMac with some soft copies of movies I own. I use the iMac to serve up Video_TS folders to several other Macs in my home. I notice that on all of the Macs (including the iMac hosting the shared folders,) if front row ever crashes when reading the file or anything interrupts the initial read causing it to exit early, that folder will never be readable my that Mac again. No matter what I do there seems to be some kind of cached file that makes front row crash when I try to read that same file again.
I can login as a different user on the same Mac and it will work. Is there a user specific cache for front row that can be cleared? Thanks for any advice, pointers or assistance. Joel

Can you play the same video_ts folders using the regular DVD Player application? Or do you get (maybe) a more detailed error?

  • VIDEO_TS meta data for Front Row?

Front Row in Leopard supports playing VIDEO_TS folders. You can also add cover art by saving a file as preview.jpg in the parent directory. The folder structure would be like the following.
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/VIDEO_TS/
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/preview.jpg
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/VIDEO_TS/
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/preview.jpg
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/VIDEO_TS/
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/preview.jpg
This works great, however I was wondering if there is any equivalent method for adding meta-data to VIDEO_TS folders. Obviously you cannot do the normal process of storing it as MPEG4 tags in an MPEG4 video file via iTunes. If it was possible I would presume the most logical method would be to store an XML file in each folder something like this.
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/VIDEO_TS/
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/preview.jpg
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/metadata.xml
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/VIDEO_TS/
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/preview.jpg
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/metadata.xml
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/VIDEO_TS/
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/preview.jpg
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/metadata.xml
I suspect that unfortunately this is not currently possible but does anyone know for certain?

Unfortunately it looks like currently there is no way to do it and Apple have been sorely neglecting Front Row (it has fallen well behind even the Apple TV which is far from state of the art). As Snow Leopard is concentrating on performance enhancements rather than new features, I do not hold out hope for any significant change for well over a year.
Note: Apple TV is not necessarily a bad product, indeed I bought one for my parents, it is merely like Front Row extremely limited, too limited for many people which is why it sales are (allegedly) so poor. I think the comment raised by more than one pundit that it fails to replace a box under your TV is an extremely important one. It does not replace your DVD player (there are still comparatively few movies on the iTunes store - assuming you are in a country which has any at all), the movies are too expensive compared to DVDs and do not offer either as good quality or as many features. It also fails to replace a video recorder or these days a DVR since it has no TV capabilities. As such it has to be treated as an additional box if at all, and as an additional box it increases the spaghetti factor and thus fails the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) even if it is by far the easiest to use product.
I have therefore switched to using Plex which is a Mac version of XBMC. Plex allows you to use VIDEO_TS folders just like Front Row (indeed the same folders can be used in both), but it does have a built-in 'library' which stores meta-data and artwork for these VIDEO_TS folders and any other videos you might have. It uses plugins called 'scrapers' to search sites like http://www.imdb.com for metadata about the movies, I have even written a 'scraper' to search Amazon for those few DVDs not listed on IMDB.
    See http://www.plexapp.com
Since Plex does an excellent job handling VIDEO_TS (i.e. DVDs) it can 'replace' a box - the DVD player and also means the kiddies do not destroy your fragile discs.
PS. Horror of horrors, even Microsoft Media Center is 'better' than Front Row. This is practically the only category Microsoft has actually genuinely earned first place in rather than cheating/bribing/stealing/buying its way to.

  • Convert VIDEO_TS to Disk Image?? (.img or .iso)

  • Substitute VOBs on VIDEO_TS of iDVD

Once I read about a way to use VOBs directly in iDVD created folders.
It was about authoring some VOBs (that I take from a dvd recorder) in ffmpegx and replacing the ones created by iDVD.
It worked partially..I get the video but not the menus (it says it is now allowed to get to the menus).
If I just replace the VOBs but not the IFOs, I get the menus but no sound.
Anyone has a good idea about how to use the IDVD menus with outside VOBs?

I would assume that you'll need to figure out a way to match file names (and perhaps locations on the disk) if you're wanting iDVD menus to work with other content. Here are a couple of alternate ideas to check into that use Roxio Toast:
    - import directly from your recorder - here's what they say: "You can also access discs from set-top DVD recorders or DVD camcorders. Toast includes special support for these discs,
which normally are not usable in the Mac OS. Insert these discs in
your recorder while Toast is running, and then import video from
    them with the Media Browser."
    - if your recorder creates Video_TS folders, here's a Toast option:
"You can create a DVD from an existing DVD-Video VIDEO_TS folder and
play it on a set-top DVD player or in a Macintosh or Windows computer
    with a DVD player.
Some VIDEO_TS folders may be too large to fit on a standard recordable
4.7 GB DVD. Toast can compress this video to fit on a standard DVD, or if
your recorder supports dual-layer recordable DVDs, you can create a dual-
    layer DVD-Video from this folder."
I don't have any connection to Toast other than being a satisfied customer.
