Video TS to appleTV

I am very close to pulling the trigger on purchasing the new appleTV, it sounds like the wife and kids could use this with no issues at all.
I have been looking through the archives and I have not been able to find a complete answer to this. I have several hundred movies, saved as Video TS folders. I am thinking about buying the new AppleTV as a way to watch these from the ext hard drives they are on. From what I can tell I need to have them in itunes, but I do not think itunes will play them in that format.
Here is what I want to do (based on what I know, feel free to offer a better way).
Encode the video TS files to a format that itunes will work with, what is the best way to do that and keep a file that is about the same size as the video TS folder and with no loss in picture quality. I do not want to pust the actual file in itunes I just want to point to it in itunes. I think this is possible from what I have read. I want to use itunes to create playlist and to allow for some east searching.
There may also be a need in the future to have a PC running WMC to access these converted files so I would like a format that was readable by WMC also.
I hope this makes sense, thank you in advance for your help.

If i store everything on an EXT hard drive(s) can that be formated so that windows can use them.
well as you know Macs don't natively support NTFS and windows doesn't natively support Mac file system. both support FAT32 but you then have file size limitations amongst other things.
you can get third party plugins that allow macs to write to NTFS or windows to write to Mac file system, but some are not always 100% reliable
Second question is will iTunes provide the "metadata" for the movies or is there other software needed for that.
no it won't. you'll need to do all that yourself.
Thanks you for the reply,I guess i will just have to format as FAT32 and try it for a while and see if there are issues.

  • Video problem with appletv

I just purchased appletv and it works fine except when using the new app itunes live (itunes festival london).  When I try to play a concert from this app from my iphone to appletv I only get audio, no video on my big screen.  I get video to play just fine on the appletv from youtube and the videos that are on my iphone.  It seems like there is some issue with this itunes live app.  Everything I have is updated to the current version (appletv, imac computer, iphone).  Airplay seems to work just fine with everything but this app.  Anyone else having a similar problem?

Thanks for the quick response.  Unfortunately that did not fix the problem for me.  My appletv and iphone software are  all up to date and I still am getting only audio on the itune festival london app.  When I press the airplay button on the app once the video has started it gives me a choice of appletv or iphone and both have speaker icons next to them instead of tv icons.   That seems weird since in all other videos it shows the tv icon rather than the speaker icon.  When the music starts playing on the tv a musical note icon shows up on the tv saying unknown artist.  I will call apple care tomorrow and see if they can figure it out.  It really shouldn't be a problem since the app is designed by apple not a third party company.

  • Encoding home videos for IPhone, AppleTV and IPod Touch

    Hi Folks,
I'm on latest version of Compressor and FCP.
Objective: to encode home video transfers to a format that is suitable for AppleTV, IPhone and Ipod Touch - in an efficient manner (this is key)
99% of the videos would be VHS and camcorder tapes in SD format.
I mentioned efficient manner b/c I tried running and Iphone encode through the presets in Compressor for a 2 hour VHS transfer - nothing fancy, just 12 chapters. I'm on my 2009 quad mac pro with 8 GBs RAM.
The estimator through the 'share' feature said it was going to take over 3 hours before I quit. The other reason I quit is b/c it won't be compatible with AppleTV.
I created DVDs for my client so I tried handbrake using the video_Ts folder and it created an IPhone/IPod Touch file no problem - only 40 minutes. Not bad. I tried the Universal preset and QT gives me an error that the finalized file isn't compatible.
I guess my question is: does it matter quality wise, if I run through Handbrake vs compressor? For this particular client, there are 12 hours worth of videos to compress.
I know about setting up a cluster on my mac pro, but everytime I try more than 1 file in a batch, the subsequent files fail. I can't even set a cluster up with my 2006 mac pro either - yes, I've had discussions with FCP support staff and have tickets. It's a bug
So, any thoughts? 3 hours (at a minimum) seems awfully long to compress.
Of course, I would be charging my client for these videos, but at that length of time, I'm not sure what a feasible cost would be for both sides.
    Cheers,
    keebler

If you are send out self contained movies to be processed in Compressor with Standard Presets (no adjustment to frame controls) you should be getting decent speed. If you want I can try encoding a two hour DV clip. How far did the encoding get before you stopped it? The estimates are not necessarily accurate at the beginning.
Also if you can get the Clusters working (disregarding the size of the batches for a moment) should help with speed. I run into limits of around 20 per batch so make multiple batches. Not the most optimal way, but could be worth it to get them all going. Set them up for overnight and it should be done in the AM.
Creating off the Video_TS folder is compressing compressed material, so it could (should) reduce quality when compared to encoding original source material, though based on the quality of the source it may be more academic...
I would try to get the Compressor end working myself. (Ignore using share, just open Compressor and put movies into it.)

  • How can I stream photos/videos to an AppleTV on someone elses network from my laptop?

I want to bring my MacBook over my parents house and display pictures from it onto the TV.  My parents have an AppleTV.
How do i do this?  Is there an easy way, or do i have to go to the trouble of adding it to the network, authenticating it, etc?

If you change your homesharing settings in iTunes (advanced menu) to use their homesharing settings, you can share your photos via iTunes by adding your library to their list under the computer section on the Apple TV. you would need to add your videos from iPhoto to iTunes in order to stream them.

  • No video mirroring iPad2 - AppleTV

    Help.
I've checked my Apple TV (Menu > General > Update software) which says 'Your Apple TV is up to date'.
I've checked in 'About' and it says it's running 4.3 (2257)
I've checked my iPad 2 which says it is running the latest version of iOS - 5.0
I double tap the home button on iPad2, scroll to iPod music control, hit the Airplay button which shows:
    - iPad
    - Apple TV
I do NOT get an option to mirror. It's just those two devices on the list and nothing else. No sliding blue 'Mirror' switch.
I select AppleTV. Now all apps on the iPad (games etc.) play the audio through the AppleTV but I get no video. It just stays on the AppleTV menu screen.
What am I missing? Anyone know why I don't get the sliding blue 'Mirror' switch. I want to play Real Racing HD on my massive TV :-(
    Thanks

You need to upgrade your apple tv software to 4.4. But many people are having trouble doing this at the moment. See the other threads in this forum section.

  • 1 Movie file has video track for appletv & 1 for iphone

Does anyone know how when you purchase a movie on itunes in HD, you get a beautiful HD movie to watch on your AppleTV that is a fairly large file, but when you choose to sync it to your iphone the movie file is MUCH smaller, made just for the iphone. There are not two files, so I assume the file has 2 video tracks in it and syncing just extracts the smaller file. Any one have insight on this? I'm ripping my own movies and want to create the same thing. Once file with a HD track and an iphone track.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
When you purchase HD files from itunes you DO get two files.
Quicktime can create multi tracked files but I don't believe they will play on the tv or the ipod. Neither device to my knowledge supports sprites

If you had an AppleTV 1 this function was available - you could play a movie or music and send the audio to any available Airport 'speaker'.
    AppleTV2 lost this useful function.

  • Converting video files for AppleTV and Ipod

So I have an Appletv AND and 80 GB Ipod classic.
I have some home videos that I would love to be able to play on both my apple tv and Ipod. I currently use ISync, but I have to create a separate file for the AppleTV and the IPOD as using the ipod file on an Appletv is grainy and low quality. Any ideas how I can convert my video file to a file that can be viewed on both my AppleTV and my Ipod?

Totally agree with Jolly Giant. Get Handbrake and use the Universal setting under the Apple presets in Handbrake. I feel it will get the best quality to have one file that works on both.

  • How to send out audio wireless from a video running on AppleTV?

Airplay its a great feature, I have one AppleTv First Generation and AppleTv Black (AppleTv 2) with ATVFlash, I was wondering how to leverage the airplay feature and send out wireless all de audio comming from my Movies playing in Apple TV?
I have a Onkyo Multiroom system and I would like to use it.
My iMac its connected directly to my amplifiers and from there I can send all audio to my home, I was figure out How to do it from Apple TV. I get a great app call Airserver and you can stream all your audio from iPhone, iPad to the iMac and the you can heard using the Onkyo.
Any help? Why the Apple Tv does not stream audio from movies, actually the first generation has this "Speaker" function and you decide where to send out the audio but just from audio files not from musical videos or movies.

    Simple answer is:
AppleTV1 can send audio to Airtunes speakers on the network
    AppleTV2 can't.

  • Only One Video on My AppleTV Computer Sharing

I share my iTunes videos and songs to my appleTV over the network from my Mac Pro.
Recently the sharing stopped on the AppleTV. I realized that my iTunes account had been logged out somehow. I logged back in and now I see on the AppleTV there is only one video when there were many before with playlists and genres. Just one now.
The only thing I can think of that changed recently is that I moved my iTunes media location to another internal hard drive to make space on my boot drive.
The one video that is showing up on AppleTV is on that drive though too. I don't think that should make a difference.

I figured it out. I changed the name of the library on my iTunes under preferences.
Then when I went to my iTunes I switched the library.
I think the library I was looking at was from my laptop instead of my desktop.

  • Converting MPEG-4 video files to AppleTV

I'm trying to convert an MPEG-4 Video file in iTunes to AppleTV. I have tried various settings when exporting to iTunes. The imported file plays fine in iTunes, but the converted file just gives me audio and a white screen - no picture. The converted file is only about 39MB, when the original MPEG-4 file was about 2G. It appears that the audio portion is converting, but not the video. Can anyone out there tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I think the mystery has been solved. I switched to H.264, and it worked beautifully. Apparently, that's the only format that works. Too bad that neither QuicktimePRO nor iTunes mention this when you attempt to do the conversion to AppleTV...
    Thanks, for the help!

  • Is there a way to password protect a video folder for appletv?

Hey guys, is there a way to password protect certain folders in Appletv? so the kiddies can't watch violent movies?
    Thanks
    Mo

No but there is an alternative for your mac but not your PC.
You could create a second user account and put the adult content into an itunes library there, when you want to watch it open the second user (can be password protected) and start itunes and the library will become accessible from the tv.

I'm wondering if my Internett is fast enough to videostream from Mac to appleTV. At a speedtest with my phone i got 65 ping, 3,73 mbps download and 0,53 upload. At Apples website it says that you need 802.11g or 802.11n, but how do i check what i got?

Internet connectivity has absolutely nothing to do with streaming from a computer to the ATV.
