Video Tut: Arch Linux (x64) Dedicated Server Setup (vncserver, lxde)

I was bored this evening so I decided to throw a small video tutorial together about this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-jcl9an3es
Could this be useful for some people? Oh and if you guys have any constructive feedback to say about the video please tell me.
And yeah I know, you shouldn't be using Arch if you need a video tutorial for installing it. It's meant to be a shortcut for people who already know most of their shit but can't be arsed to google around for a few commands and procedures they can't remember IF they can check them all from one package.

I cannot open your FTP from chromium. Filezilla works.
I don't see any OpenSSH, VNC is very insecure to be exposed.
Hmmh... Good points. I don't think the beginning of the video needs to be separated, but oh well, I could put a caption there which would indicate viewer to skip through the beginning if he wishes I guess...
Anonymous FTP browsing Is working fine for me via browser? I even asked a few friends of mine to check and for both of them it worked in Chrome, Firefox and IE.
And about OpenSSH, I should've really included that in the video, god damnit, how can I forget something as essential as that? I guess I'll have to make a part 2 for it plus a few other things when I find some free time again... And using VNC for a remote desktop experience is just something I prefer.
Thanks for the feedback!

  • Arch Linux as a server: advantages and disadvantages?

    Hello,
    I am about to create a hosting server for a great number of websites. Since i never actually did it myself it will be relatively new to me. For that reason I want to use Arch distro because I like it, understand it and have most experience with it.
    I wanted to hear opinions why Arch is suitable and why not for a server machine. Also, maybe someone could recommend other distros that are better fit for the job (provided there are any)
    Thanks!

    Short: CentOS is a pretty popular choice but I have no experience with it. You will need to make sure you have the latest security updates while also making sure that your keeping a good availability(up time), which could be a problem with Arch Linux.
    Long: Security updates and system up time/availability. Making sure you have the latest security updates may effect your server's availability. This can be a problem if you have paying clients as the updates may break stuff. Arch Linux doesn't have an official security team but there are some community efforts underway. Take a look at the wiki under security, firewalls and sysctl.conf hardening. Also keep your eye are ArchServer. I use Arch Linux on my VPS but its only been for hobby stuff so far. As I've been getting closer to relying on my website professionally I've been considering changing to a different dist. of Linux; the problem is I'm most familiar with Arch Linux, don't want to go back to Slackware and I'm not happy with the way Ubuntu does certain things[init system, sudo/root setup](I maintain an Ubuntu LAMP setup for our Intranet).

  • Arch linux support various server types?

    Im new to linux and Arch is my first linux distro.
    my question is does arch linux can be function as server ( like http, ftp, smtp, ssh, samba, etc)
    and if so, where can i get guide(or instruction) to setting up the server?
    (looked at Wiki tab but couldnt find one)
    thank you

    For a small server, I think arch will work fine.  It's rolling release system and lack of distro-specific patches can make it a little more difficult to maintain in my opinion, but as long as it's nothing production grade you'll be fine.
    Arch is a good platform to learn linux since it really emphasizes doing everything by hand, you get to learn your system as you build it.  And your end product is only what you wanted, not what the distro maintainer envisioned you wanted.

  • Dual boot Windows 7 (64) and Arch Linux (64) problems

    Hello:
    I am new to Arch Linux and just finished installing the 64bit on my laptop. It had a prebuilt Windows 7 (64) installed which I kept but split the hdd from 160Gb to 80Gb and 80Gb. I installed Arch there and set 4 partitions, all of them as Logical - a 64 MB ext2 /boot partition; a 512 MB swap partition; a 15 GB root partition; and the rest as my /home partition. My partitions look like this:
    Disk Drive: /dev/sda
    Size: 160041885696 bytes, 160.0 GB
    Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 19457
    Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    sda1 Primary Unknown (27) 12889.02
    sda2 Boot Primary NTFS 106.93
    sda3 Primary NTFS [] 73915.11*
    sda5 Logical Linux ext2 65.81*
    sda6 Logical Linux 509.97*
    sda7 Logical Linux ext2 15002.92*
    sda8 Logical Linux ext2 57549.55*
    The install was succesful(this was running from the core install cd) and I installed GRUB to my /boot but when I restarted it loaded Windows 7. I have used Knoppix USB disc to boot and see my Arch Linux install files and edited the /boot/gur/menu.lst file.
    In Windows I installed EasyBCD 1.7.2 and tried to get NeoGrub bootloader working as a dual boot. I tried getting rid of the boot flag for Windows with cfdisk and setting it to my (Logical) sda5. That did not work. So far the only way I have booted into my Arch Linux install has been by going to the Live CD, choosing "Boot from Existing Linux Install" and editing the command files there.
    root (hd0,4)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
    initrd /kernel26.img
    My goal is to get a dual boot working for Windows 7 and Arch Linux 64 and continue installing the Xorg and KDE to Arch. I just don't know what the problem is here. I don't mind reinstalling Arch if something went wrong, but I would like to keep my Windows running in order and add Arch on.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I ran the LiveCD and chose "Install to MBR hd0". I ended up with this:
    setup hd(0,1)
    Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists.....yes
    Checking if "/boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5" exists.....yes
    Running "embed /boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 (hd0,1)".....failed(this is not fatal)
    Running "embed /boot/grub/iso9660_stage1_5 (hd16)".....failed(this is not fatal)
    Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd0,1) /boot/grub/stage2 p (hd0,1) boot/grub/menu.lst".....failed
    Error 31: File is not sector aligned
    My entry for Windows into the menu.lst looks like this:
    # (0) Arch Linux x64
    title Arch Linux x64
    root (hd0,4)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3841273c-d91e-41d6-9dbf-716a15d03a01 ro

  • [VIDEO TUTORIAL] Installing Arch Linux on GPT/LVM/GRUB2

    Hello everyone,
    I've recently switched over from running my machine on LVM with a MSDOS partition style, and I was tired of the limitations of it. Such as 4 primary partions or 3 primary and 1 extended. It was also hindering my flexibility since I had to make 1 primary partition that was /boot, which forced me to make an initram image if I wanted to put my / inside of the LVM. The only way I could truly fix all my problems was to move away from GRUB-Legacy (Which I love since it's so easy to configure) over to GRUB 2(Which is not as bad as I thought it was).
    I made this video to help people trying to do this combination. I also included the links to further information in the videos' description. It contains a link to GRUB 2 Architecture and moving over to GRUB (on IBM's site), and also ArchWiki resources for further reading.
    I hope you enjoy it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69X9ZYA41xU
    After you finish doing this, you will end up with this style:
    GPT Partition Layout w/ Protective MBR.
    /dev/sda1 - BIOS Boot Partition
    /dev/sda2 - Linux LVM (arch is name of LVM)
    --> /dev/arch/boot - ext2
    --> /dev/arch/swap - swap
    --> /dev/arch/root - ext4
    --> /dev/arch/home - ext4

    As a complete newbie to partitioning on Linux I'd like to say how grateful I am to for making this.
    You've kept it clear, clean and simple which I appreciate.
    As most of my ventures into installing Linux is usually accompanied with a graphical installer a great deal of this is fairly alien. It could be nice to have a wiki entry just laying out a few examples for partitioning and setting up arch in various simple and exotic ways.
    Again, thank you for this contribution. (While I quickly transcribe the steps in your video and ready the 'man' command)

  • X server won't start (Arch Linux installed on USB key)

    Hi,
    I installed Arch Linux on a USB key (see the original thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=185441).
    The problem is that X doesn't start on all machines.
    When starting the system on a machine with NVIDIA GTX 560Ti graphics card:
    - X doesn't start using startx or xinit and there are no log entries in /var/log/Xorg.*.log (as I haven't tried to start X).
    - I'm getting the message "Waiting for X server to begin accepting connections .. .. .. ..".
    - Additionally: The "default terminals tty1/2/3/..." (which I'm using to start X) from have a poor resolution (I think 640x480 pixel).
    When starting the system on a virtual machine or a machine with an ATI Radeon (mobile) graphics card:
    - X starts and runs without any trouble the XFCE desktop environment.
    - Additionally: The default terminals have a proper resolution (I think the maximal resolution of the display).
    What happens if you uninstall nvidia and use nouveau?
    I installed all video drivers recommended here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … eo_drivers
    So I was using nouveau in the first place. I already tried to uninstall the open source driver (xf86-video-nouveau, nouveau-dri) to use the default driver (I think this is xf86-video-vesa) with no effect.
    The poor tty resolution is to be expected if the closed-source nvidia drivers are installed, because they don't support KMS.
    I have never tried to install the proprietary driver (and actually don't want to use the proprietary driver).
    Also have you looked in /etc/X11 ?
    Yes. I don't think that my configuration contains anything preventing X from starting using the NVIDIA graphics card (but I'm not sure what to look for).
    I'm starting X using "startx" or "xinit -- :0 -nolisten tcp vt$XDG_VTNR". Here's my ~/.xinitrc:
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi

    I figured out where the problem comes from. It is actually the screen (which has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixel). When using a screen (with a smaller resolution) I'm getting a decent resolution in the terminal and - more imporant -  X starts and seems to use the Nouveau driver (which I have installed again). When plugging my normal screen again (while X is running) I'm able to use this screen with the maximum resolution without problems (so only starting with this screen does not work). Now I have a reference point to fix the problem.
    The other thread might be interesting as well.

  • Arch Linux Gaming Setup - Advice?

    Okay so with the arrival of BL2 on Linux I want to setup Arch for gaming, but I need some advice towards this.
    How would you personally set it up? UEFI or BIOS, EXT4 or BTRFS. FOSS or Catalyst?
    What desktops would you also have? I am tempted via KDE5, I think it looks rather sweet, or maybe budgie.
    also should I use 3.17 or 3.16?
    Any other suggestions for this, I am not very good at setting up arch for gaming..
    Many thanks!

    Any of those options are fine and won't make a noticeable difference.
    The biggest choice is whether to use the open source "radeon" driver or Catalyst, but that's simple to decide: Start with the open source "radeon" driver (it's dead simple to setup). If it doesn't meet the needs of the video games you want to play, then try Catalyst.

  • Setting up an Arch Linux server

    I apologize if this is in the wrong topic. Anyways I am vary new to arch linux and linux in general, and I need to set up a server to host a website. It will be fairly small with low traffic.
    I followed the guide on the wiki to install and configure LAMP, but after that I have no idea what to do. I was looking for someone to at least point me in the right direction.
    I should also note the website I want to host is already created.

    Woah woah, I'm sure lighttpd is a fine piece of software, but it sounds like zanandan already has his server completely setup.
    zanandan wrote:How do I set it up to be a normal www. webpage?
    What URL did you purchase or sign up to use? If you don't have one, you will need to get one from a domain name registrar.
    You then tell the registrar to point your new "zanandan.com" website to point to the IP address that is given to your router from your Internet service provider (see http://www.whatismyip.com/). You then configure your router to send all HTTP traffic (port 80) directly to the IP address for your server (it probably looks like 192.168.###.###). You now have a website accessible from anywhere.
    Be warned, though: Many Internet service providers send a new random IP address to your router every few days, so I have a service ("ddclient") that automatically updates my URL with my new IP address every so often.
    I use http://dyn.com/dns/ for my free domain name.

  • Arch Linux Server Problem

    Hello everyone,
    Alright, so I have Arch Linux installed on my Toshiba laptop. I wanted to test using a Linux box as a Minecraft Server. I have everything setup correctly. After I run the shell script to launch the server, everything seems to load fine, just like it did in Win 7 (I have Arch and Win 7 dual-booted). After I go to join the server on the host PC, and a different one, it hangs on 'Connecting to server'. Now, in Windows, it will log right into the server, on port 25565. On Arch, it hangs on 'Connecting to server'. I was wondering if Arch Linux blocks ports by default. This is probably a stupid question, hence the category, but Google couldn't help me this time. By the way, here is the guide I followed to setup my server:
    http://wiki.bukkit.org/Setting_up_a_server#Linux .
    I know I have my ports forwarded. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Does anything interesting appear in the Minecraft server's output? I am running a Minecraft server just fine and it was literally just a case of downloading the jar, making a server.properties file, and running the jar. No extra configuration was done.

  • Server Setup advice for a video production house

    Hello Forum,
    I recently started working for a small video production company, I need advice on the type of server and other hardware and services that will allow my co-workers to work efficiently. Here are some details:
    Currently we are going to buy a new server, I am not sure what we should look at getting,
    currently we use a mini mac running OSX server and have 6 iMacs that the editors and other staff use.
    We also have a 15 TB Drobo network storage device which is attached to the mini-mac server we are going to replace.
    The production team uses Final Cut and Motion to build documentaries.
    The other issue is that need a way to connect the office in Baltimore to the office in Washington DC and ideally share files between each location, currently they cannot access the network from Baltimore and have to have a copy of the unedited footage on their own Drobo.
    What type of server setup do you recommend? Quad core? speed?
    Should we set up a VPN to connect offices or does someone have a better idea, if so what applications do we need?
    I know windows networking pretty well, but Mac is totally new to me.Currently editing files from the server is really slow and files are usually pulled to the iMacs to do editing, burning DVDs from files on the server hardly ever works- they pull them local then burn the DVD and it works.
    I would love to hear suggestions to help us get up and running.
    Anyone know of a good website for server setup- Since there is no Domains in OSX that i know of, how can we secure the network? Links would be great.
    Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

    Well if your looking for performance. You could get a Promise VTrak E-Class RAID with 32TB of storage, later on you can add more chassis to the raid for more storage space. The raid can be expanded up to 160TB. (80 drive bays, each drive 2 TB)
    Using fiber you could attach the raid to an xServer or Mac Pro (running mac os x server). You'll probable want at least 8 or 16 GB of ram on the server.
    The server can run a copy of final cut server. Witch makes it easer to work as a group. Mac OS X server, when properly configured, can also be used to create a VPN between both locations.
    Final Cut Server will let editors check in/out specific parts of the documentaries. So the project lives on the server; instead of scattered over every ones computers. Part of this is you can pull down thumb nails versions of the video to work off of. Only when you do the final render do you download the HD version of the video.
    If you want even better performance on the editing stations. you could also upgrade to Mac Pros. Mac Pros have upgrade slots witch you can use to add fiber networking. You could also use the upgrade slots to add a black magic real time HD capture card.
    Or if you want to keep the imacs. you might want to hook the server to a switch by fiber, and have the imacs connected to the same switch by 1000-T
    If you call apple i'm sure they'd be happy to help you figure this all out.

    for mor info on final cut server: http://www.apple.com/finalcutserver/

  • How to setup grub2 with arch linux and xen, lvm on luks

    OK, so I tried downloading this package from AUR:  https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xen-git/ , but that has patching problems as noted in the comments.  It looks like the packagebuild sets up all the xen stuff for you, but I can't seem to get the package to install because of the error's while patching.  If anyone can point me in the right direction on what all the extra files in the PKGBUILD are for or how to debug problems with PKGBUILDs not working because of patches.
    So next I just tried to compile the latest xen from git://xenbits.xen.org/xen.git (with ./configure, make, make install) and that seemed to go fine, but I'm a bit confused:
    1.  Do I have to do any additional configuration for xen when working with arch linux?  On ubuntu I could just compile the source, update grub, and make sure to start the x services at runtime.
    2.  How do I set up grub to load xen with this setup?  Right now this is my /boot/grub/grub.cfg:
    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda3:vgStorage"
    # Preload both GPT and MBR modules so that they are not missed
    GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_gpt part_msdos"
    # Uncomment to enable Hidden Menu, and optionally hide the timeout count
    #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=5
    #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
    # Uncomment to use basic console
    GRUB_TERMINAL_INPUT=console
    # Uncomment to disable graphical terminal
    #GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=console
    # The resolution used on graphical terminal
    # note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
    # you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
    GRUB_GFXMODE=auto
    # Uncomment to allow the kernel use the same resolution used by grub
    GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
    # Uncomment if you want GRUB to pass to the Linux kernel the old parameter
    # format "root=/dev/xxx" instead of "root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxx"
    #GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true
    # Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries
    GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY=true
    # Uncomment and set to the desired menu colors. Used by normal and wallpaper
    # modes only. Entries specified as foreground/background.
    #GRUB_COLOR_NORMAL="light-blue/black"
    #GRUB_COLOR_HIGHLIGHT="light-cyan/blue"
    # Uncomment one of them for the gfx desired, a image background or a gfxtheme
    #GRUB_BACKGROUND="/path/to/wallpaper"
    #GRUB_THEME="/path/to/gfxtheme"
    # Uncomment to get a beep at GRUB start
    #GRUB_INIT_TUNE="480 440 1"
    #GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT="true"
    ~
    I've tried throwing in a line like: XEN_HYPERVISOR_CMDLINE="cryptdevice=/dev/sda3:vgStorage", but nothing new shows up on the grub boot menu.
    First time trying to set up a non-ubuntu system, please help!

    As for XEN.... well you could always try QEMU/KVM or LXC.
    As for the LVM2-on-LUKS/dm-crypt
    My /etc/mkinitcpio.conf looks like this...
    MODULES="aesni_intel ata_generic ata_piix nls_cp437 ext4 intel_agp i915 dm-snapshot"
    BINARIES=""
    FILES=""
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect block keymap encrypt lvm2 filesystems keyboard fsck shutdown"
    /etc/defaults/grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:root:allow-discards"
    GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_gpt part_msdos"
    GRUB_TERMINAL_INPUT=console
    GRUB_GFXMODE=auto
    GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
    GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY=true
    The running grub config looks like this
    /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    9 insmod part_gpt
    10 insmod part_msdos
    53 if loadfont unicode ; then
    54 set gfxmode=auto
    55 load_video
    56 insmod gfxterm
    57 set locale_dir=$prefix/locale
    58 set lang=en_US

    85 load_video
    86 set gfxpayload=keep
    87 insmod gzio
    88 insmod part_msdos
    89 insmod ext2
    90 set root='hd1,msdos2'
    91 if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
    92 search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd1,msdos2 --hint-efi=hd1,msdos2 --hint-baremetal=ahci1,msdos2 BBAAEEAA-FFCC-CCFF-FFCC-AABBCCEEBBAA
    93 else
    94 search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root BBAAEEAA-FFCC-CCFF-FFCC-AABBCCEEBBAA

    97 linux /vmlinuz-linux-grsec root=/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-lvroot rw cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:root:allow-discards quiet
    98 echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
    99 initrd /initramfs-linux-grsec.img
    100 }
    Things to note:
    Numerical UUID is the UUID of the ROOT partition.
    Alphabetical UUIS is the BOOT partition
    hd1,msdos2 AND ahci1,msdos2 are how the Grub Bootloader numbers the drives not Linux.
    I have my BOOT partition on a USB stick, and it is the Second partition.
    So, that would make it, Device 2 and Partition 2
    Device numbering starts at 0
    Partition numbering starts at 1
    Oh, and note that you don't need ":allow-discards" ... at all but certainly if you don't have an SSD. Also note that I included the line numbers so it is very clear that I didn't post the whole thing, but instead what I thought was relevant. Finally, I am loading modules that I don't even need, but what the hell... if it ain't broke, don't fix it

    You can not install it.
    Only apps from the official Apple App Store can be installed.

  • Arch Linux installation video

    Not something useful for those good with arch linux, but for people trying their first installation this could be quite useful:
    I created a video about how to install arch linux up to XFCE, you can take a look at it here:

    Hoe you like it)

    The original isn't so though...Google videos make it horrible quality for some reason. I'll reupload it onto Archux.com and embed it properly And before that I'll fix those captions disappearing too fast.
