Video8 and MyBook

I have a some video8 tapes I need to make into a DVD. I have the camcorder but it's only output is RCA, what I need is advice on the best bridging hardware (if that what it's called) to do this with iMovie 6. I have seen some cheap USB-RCA divices on eBay will this work, will iMovie see it, do I need Firewire?
Also I want to get a MyBook 500 for the video editing to be stored on. But I'm not sure if USB will do the trick, do I need Firewire and would it work to store the video on another computer on my network that does have a bigger HDD?
BTW - I have a new Canon with USB and it work 100% with iMovie, plug in, open iMovie and away you go! But it only has conections out to a TV if needed, no inputs, otherwise I could just hook up the two camera's and do it that way.

Some camcorders - I don't know if your Canon does, as you don't say which model it is - can act as a "pass-through" converter. So if it has RCA (..or a 3.5mm jack and a converter cable to RCA..) analog-in, you could feed IN the Video-8 signal there, and take OUT a digital signal from the FireWire socket.
(..Even if you couldn't do it simultaneously, you could just copy the Video-8 onto a miniDV tape that way, then import the miniDV into iMovie..)
Many Sonys do that, but I don't know which Canons do it ..you could look up that feature in Google, or on the 'camcorderinfo' website, or on the Canon website.
As for the MyBook disc and USB, although USB 2.0 is fast, it generally can't maintain the constant throughput speed which video files require while you're editing. So you can certainly copy or move video files via USB, but probably can't successfully edit through USB.
Don't be tempted to use the MyBook - or any other external disc - for video files until you've made sure that it's formatted as 'Mac OS Extended', otherwise you may find that files won't be recognised, or won't be editable, in iMovie.
To check, just Ctrl-click on the MyBook (..or whatever disc you get..) when it's on your screen's Desktop, and choose "Get Info". That will show if it's formatted as MS-DOS compatible - which it probably is, and which you don't want - or 'Mac OS Extended'. If it isn't formatted as 'Mac OS Extended', just go to 'Applications' and then 'Utilities' and 'Disk Utility', then select the new external hard disc and click on the 'Erase' tab, and choose 'Mac OS Extended' there.
Incidentally, Canons generally do NOT like to be plugged into a FireWire socket - on your Mac - while any other FireWire device is also connected. So if you do discover a FireWire socket on your MyBook, or buy a proper FireWire hard disc, then you may not be able to import from your Canon camera directly onto that separate hard disc: the Canon may have trouble "playing nicely" with it.
If you want to use the external disc for editing - as distinct from just storing video material on it - then you may need to import to your Mac's internal hard disc, instead, and afterwards move your finished project to the external disc for storage or safekeeping ..thus freeing up space on the internal disc.
That's just a quirk of Canon camcorders, and is nothing to do with the brand of external disc you choose..

  • Airport.  Extreme and Mybook Studio Edition - what cable do I need.

I haven't had my Mybook external harddrive attached to our home network for over a year and now I can't remember how I did it. In fact, I can't even find a cable that would work! Is it possible to run a cable from the Airport extreme to the MyBook? Or does it need to go into my modem? Exactly which wire do I need?
I have just been using Firewire to connect to my MacBook directly, but I want to share it over the network again.
    Please help!

You'll need some sort of USB cable that has an "A" connector on the end that will connect to the Extreme. The exact details will depend on what sort of USB connector the Mybook has.

  • Setting up Time Machine with Snow Leopard and MyBook World Edition II NAS

I have just successfully set up Time Machine on my MyBook World Edition II NAS. It's not so straightforward, and the information on the Western Digital support site is either unhelpful or flat-out wrong, so here's a post that will hopefully save people in a similar position a lot of time and frustration.
    Here are the key facts:
    1. The MyBook World Edition II NAS does support Time Machine -- if you upgrade to at least firmware Release 1.01.14 (9/29/09). See http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=mbworld. Amazingly, the Level I support people at Western Digital told me that Time Machine is not supported! I had to point him to this link.
    2. MyBook World Edition II comes with a built-in user, WD_Backup, which appears to be the only user that can be used for the backup.
    3. Follow the instructions here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/docs/en/appletimemachine.pdf. BUT, what the instructions don't tell you is the password for that user, which Mac OS will ask you for during the Time Machine setup. On my device, it was "admin" but other posts say the password can be "backup" or "wd_backup."
    4. Ignore some of the misleading statements in the Western Digital "knowledge base." For example, it says Time Machine is not supported. That used to be true but with the firmware update, is no longer true. Also, some instructions direct you to make a partition on your drive for Time Machine using Disk Utility. This is not possible, as far as I can tell, because the MyBook World Edition II shows up as a "share," not a "device" in the system, and therefore Disk Utility does not see it.
    5. The reason I wanted to set up a partition, where I could limit the disk space, is that I read that Time Machine creates daily backups, with incremental versions of documents. Thus, the Time Machine backup will eventually fill up whatever space is given to it. Since I could not partition the MyBook World Edition II, what I did instead was to enable the "Quota" functionality and then put a disk quota on the WD_Backup user. I hope this will do the trick. (I have the further issue of having two Time Machine backups, one for me, one for my wife. How our Time Machines will battle it out for the disk space, I have no idea.)
I hope that the Western Digital people will create greater flexibility for Time Machine users in future firmware updates.
    Anyway, hope this helped.

You do need to know that Apple may not support this: Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733 (Leopard) or http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html (Snow Leopard).
You may be able to get it to work successfully, but there's no guarantee it will work well, or in the future.
From a post in another forum (found by V.K.):
The technical reason why Apple limits Time Machine to 10.5 AFP volumes appears to be to prevent disk image corruption. There were additional features added to AFP in 10.5 to support Time Machine. These presumably allow the disk image engine to force disk image journal data to write out all the way to the disk. Without such features, a network interruption can result in a corrupted filesystem on the disk image despite journaling. Remember, journaling relies on the journal being written all the way to disk before the changes take place. If you can't guarantee that (e.g., because of network/NAS buffering) then the journal is useless. Time Machine appears to rely heavily on disk journaling to deal with network drop-outs, interrupted backups, and the like. Take this away and your data is at risk.
If the NAS you are using supports these features it should report them to the OS and you should natively be able to choose that volume. If you have to trick the OS to use the volume it means the NAS does not support it.
To summarize: if you care about your backup data you should avoid using non-natively supported AFP servers.
That post obviously applies to Leopard; Snow Leopard appears to have added some requirements, that are also not supported by all NAS devices: some that were working with Leopard no longer work with Snow Leopard.
As long as you understand the risks, it's your call. But do yourself a favor and maintain some sort of secondary backup, such as a "clone" via CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, or some other backup app. (Many of us do that with any backup app: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.)

  • Time machine and myBook

I have a mybook 500 gb external HD for backup with time machine. Had the system backup on this drive (151 gb). Upgraded to snow leopard and the auto backups failed to the point that myBook needed 'repaired'. Disk utility could not repair and recommended I erase, reformat and start fresh. Did this and now the TM will backup 9 gb of 151 gb on a 500 gb external HD before failing... error always says ' error, try to back up later.' Each time the BU starts it only gets to 9 gb before the same error occurs.
    Any solutions?

I have, however, tried to verify only to attempt to repair which finally led me to erase and reformatt HFS+ Journaled...
You need more than that . . you need to specify the GUID *Partition Map Scheme.* See item #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip.*
I think the myBook has a bad reputation for the iMACs.
That's true, too, but not 100%.

  • WRT600N and MyBook World Edition

I have a MyBook World Edition that is hooked via ethernet to the 600N.  I can ping the myBook but cannot map a drive.  The myBook World Edition is the networked version of a MyBook.  It has CIFs shares and broadcasts itself to the network.  Something in the 600N is blocking it as I can hook up my old Netgear router and get to it.
How can I unblock this on the linksys?

Try this link to MAP the drive if MAC OS .... Also you can try this link ....

  • Problem with itunes and mybook

This is slightly odd. I have all my music moved to my My Book (1tb) and everything plays fine, but lately I can't seem to locate a lot of the actual music files on either my laptop (macbook pro) or my external hard drive in finder. It is set up so that itunes should copy music to the folder set up on the external, but I think it is putting the files somewhere on my laptop. Is this another weird bug with 8.2? Anyone else experiencing this?

okay katrina, i installed quicktime standalone, but i still the vanishing license message, i checked my task manager, i see qttask.exe, however, i do not see itunes.exe, i only see ipodservice.exe and itunesservice.exe thus, if you can tell me how to install itunes by itself, i think you will solve all my troubles, please respond asap

  • Editing HDV w/o a Kona and raid reccomendations

    Hi!
Is anyone editing HDV without the use of a Kona? I don't need to digitize or output, so I was wondering if the Kona is necessary?
Also, I'm looking for recommendations on drives or raids that work well with FCP and HDV.
    Thanks!

A Kona card isn't necessary at all...nor is a Matrox or Decklink card. Only if you want to output to another tape format or color correct properly on an HDTV or HD broadcast monitor are they really necessary. HDV is capturable via firewire, as HDV or even as ProRes (http://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php).
If you capture as HDV, you can output back to HDV and also make DVDs and QT movies. The HDV format (GOP) is just very processor intensive and takes longer to render and compress to other formats.
If you capture as ProRes you are limited to making DVDs and QT movies if you lack a capture card.
HDV has the same data rate as DV, so you can capture to firewire drives (FW800 best of the two), or eSATA. G-Raids are good for this, CalDigit VR, MaxxDigital Edit Vault. Raid 5 solutions are protected, but overkill for HDV...fine for ProRes. But they get to be more expensive. EVO HD from MaxxDigital is one of the better options that is inexpensive.
But really, any decent firewire drive will be fine. OtherWorld Computing, G-Tech, MaxxDigital...just avoid LaCie and MyBook stuff.

  • MyBook Live stoped working properly after OSX Moutain Lion 10.8.5 Update - TimeMachine & Share unusable

    Hi folks
I having my first OSX nightmare after updating to 10.8.5
I have a Mini and a WD MyBook Live 2TB external drive partionioned in half 1TB for Files and other for TimeMachine
After upgrading OSX to 10.8.5 last week I noticed irregular dysplay of my WD shares on Finder and when TimeMachine started backing up a ridiculous 20 179 days and counting up appeared
Here goes the History by detail:
    Update OSX
-Noticing irregular access to shares on MyBook Live
--shares on finder didn't appear or disapeared
--when viewing other things (eg Apps) and returning to share - share was logged off and reinitiated logging
-TimeMachine Backups didn't occur automatically (Mini hibernated without completing them) - when forced to start the ridiculous time just kept counting up, first try was 10 days last one - over 20 000 days!...
    Then I tryed
    +restarting MAC
+restarting MyBook Live after checking drive function with proper tools
    +disabled and re-enabled TimeMachine
+checked for updates - OSX and MyBook Live Firmware
+looked out for help google it, searched this forums
+deleted volinfo.database (as proposed elsewere in this foruns) - restarted again all Mini&MyBookLive
    NOTHING WORKED ...
+submited OSX feedback and this post...
Acknowledging my first OSX Nightmare to you and asking for your knowledgable and kind help - anyone?!
    PLZ some guidance
    Best regards

Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. This is an example of what can happen. I know that the manufacturer says it will work, and that it usually seems to work. Except when it doesn't. Then your only recourse is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or a mini-tower (802.11ac) AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base station supports Time Machine, not any previous model.

  • DEVICES: not seeing MyBook or Macintosh HD

I switched to Mac about 2 weeks ago
Beginning yesterday, I think, within Finder, under DEVICES, I am seeing iDisk, but I'm not seeing MACINTOSH HD or MYBOOK.
In the past, I had not seen iDisk (I have a trial account, I suppose, but I'm not using it that I know of).
And I had been seeing Macintosh HD and MYBOOK.
On my desktop, I have an icon for Macintosh HD, but not the Mybook
    This seems odd?
Can anyone here tell me what's up or should I call Applecare or should I post this elsewhere on the forum?
    Thanks!

    Please pardon the intrusion…

  • How do I back up Wireless Hard Drive using Time Machine

I have a MacBook Pro and I'm running OSX Lion.
I'm having trouble setting up time machine to back up two USB external hard drives (named Portable iTunes and Portable iPhoto) connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I have a time capsule with a 3TB USB WD MyBook external hard drive that I'm using as the Time Machine Hard Drive.
Portable iTunes, Portable, iPhoto and MyBook are wirelessly mounted to my desktop.
Will someone please explain how I can set up MyBook to wirelessly back up the two portable drives using Time Machine?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but Time Machine can only backup a hard drive that is connected directly to your Mac using USB or Firewire.

  • Connect camcorder drivers for a Sony CCD-TRV608 Hi8 Camcorder for Windows 8.1. How do I SOLVE? New camcorder?

There are no drivers for a Sony CCD-TRV608 Hi8 Camcorder for Windows 8.1.  How can I solve this problem?  Do I need to buy a newer or different model that plays video8 and videoHi8 tapes that IS compatible?  Its a shame because I searched for months for the power cord and bought connecting cords for USB and the old fashion three RCA plugs for a VHS VCR and now I cant use them.

Dear Comrade VideoGeek, Yes, I am extremely frustrated, and you have my sincere apology if I was rude to you.  I should have known better than to say unwise and unkind things to you.  My bad entirely.  Sorry!! The things you don't know are that Windows 8.1 does not under ANY circumstances acceps USB video streaming.  Not from my camera and not from Dazzle or ANY other device or cable.  That is written into STONE by Microsoft.  Can't do nothing about it.  That's a barrier that cannot be broken or worked around. The other thiing you don't know is that I do not have RCA outlets on my camera.  I bought it assuming it must have as most devices until then did and got it home in 2001 or whenever and found to my great dismay that it ONLY has a USB output.  Not multicolored RCA jacks of any kind.  That is also a barrier that I cannot break unless I buy a used camera that takes my tapes and DOES have RCA outputs.  My bad.  I should have returned it immediately at the time, unfortunately I was too ill at the time to do so. I know you were only trying to help.  I'm sorry if I was snippy with you.  You were extremely kind to try to help.  And I appreciate you.  Hopefully other people will see your answers and they will help them. Meanwhile, I'm banging my head against the Apple walls trying to find out which product of theirs MAY be able to work for me and which is the best solution for me all around and that too is a nightmare. Thank YOU for being so kind!!  And for respoding  with kindness.

  • Bluetooth not available error

I got a early 2008 MAC PRO with additional wireless keyboard and mighty mouse few weeks ago.
Recently I keep encountering the "bluetooth not available" problem after software update (system reboot) if I have USB devices attached to the MAC PRO. Also, if I connect the Logitech quickcam ultravision directly to the MAC PRO, the bluetooth will have "not available" error after system reboot. If I connect the quickcam to the USB HUB, the problem won't happen.
This error happened again when I install the new Safari update while I have the keyspan USB-to-Serial connected to the MAC PRO.
I have all the latest updates installed in my MAC PRO. I don't know what happened, but I hope this problem can be fixed so that I don't have to keep unplugged all my USB equipment if I need to reboot my MAC PRO.

    Hi there,
I just had the exact same thing happen! I had my usb 2 flash stick and MyBook 320HD only. I then noticed that the MyBook wouldn't sleep even though the Mac was shut down. I had to force shut off the drive by removing the power lead. I restarted the Mac with no usb whatsoever and voila! All is now ok.. I wonder if this is connected with the motherboard power management??

  • How to capture hi8 super8?

    Hi,
I have my Imac connect to a Dv converter what has S-video and composite. Now i would like to Be able to capture Super video, Video8 and Hi8.
I don't know much about what play i have to get to work. Is there anyone who can tell me, if there is a unique player that are able to play it all? I really need some help.
    Thanks

Super 8 is an 8mm Cine (film) format. Recording Super8 to DV and/or DVD requires equipment that can project the film and a video recorder. At the low end of the spectrum people will simply play the Super8 from a film projector, point a video camera at the screen and record away. The higher end equipment gives the operator more control over how the frames are recorded.
To do it very well involves some specialized equipment and a high degree of skill.
An example of the lower (do it yourselfer...) end of things.
(The link is in no way an endorsement - it was the first item that popped up in a googe search of " telecine equipment'.)

  • MY BOOK Essential USB to Firewire Port

MY BOOK Essential edition uses a USB connector. Is there an adapter/cable that would connect MY BOOK USB to my G4 Firewire port? I understand the speed will be limited to the USB hardware in MY BOOK.

    Buy a bare FireWire case.
    Pull drive from MyBook.
I would normally say to avoid MyBook and MyBook Pro anyway.

  • No Firewire

Hello all, I have read these forums with a passion for the past couple of weeks seeking a way to fix my problem by myself.
Basically what happened was, I was moving something and I accidently unplugged my computer. I plugged it back in, started it up and my external LaCie hard-drive connected through the FW400 port in the back of my computer did not mount up. I unplugged it, plugged it back in. To no avail. So I test my external Mackie Mixer which uses Onyx Firewire to connect. Usually if it was powered on it was the main source for sound output/input. It did not work either.
I have done pretty much every step outlined on similar issues and the firewire ports are still not reading devices.
I connected my lacie disk via usb so it is functional...and my mixer is functional...it's my firewire...
I suspect they are working slightly...because when I plug in the LaCie disk via the firewire it powers on...but it is just not detected on my computer...
When looking under Firewire in the System Profiler tool it takes a second to load then displays...
    Firewire Bus:
with nothing afterwards....any help would be much appreciated...thanks in advance...

I have a solution for the "dead firewire" problem that seems to work EVERY TIME in my system. This post is a bit long so please be patient, - first a little background:
My system: PowerMac G5, 1.8 dual, OS: 10.5.2, Firewire devices: iSight & 1TB WD MyBook
I have owned the system since new and never had any firewire issues before 10.5 & the MyBook. I do not know which causes the problem as the MyBook was bought at the same time as Leopard to use with Time Machine.
Symptoms: Sometimes the Firewire bus is dead and neither the MyBook nor the iSight will work. When this happens, the system profiler will take a long time if I click the firewire heading but it can not find any of the firewire units.
My system also has another issue since Leopard/MyBook that causes it to crash into "max fan mode", usually when left alone. I think there is a connection between these two problems and that there is an increased probability for the firewire to be dead after such a crash.
I have tried a lot of the tips that I have found on these pages: Repairing permissions, pushing the small reset button on the logic board, resetting the PRAM, taking out the battery and removing the power cable for many minutes. Nothing brought my firewire back to life.
My solution: Both my iSight and MyBook are plugged into the firewire ports on the rear side (iSight in the 400 port and the MyBook in the 800 port). I first remove the iSight connector, then start the Skype application ( 2.6.0.151) and open the preference window and select the VIDEO tab. Skype then tells me that no camera is available. If I then plug the iSight into the FRONT firewire connector the camera is ALWAYS recognized and live video preview is shown if the camera is in the on/open position. (I am not 100% shure it will not work if plugged into the rear connector).
At the same time the MyBook magically appears on the desktop and the System Profiler will find all information on the firewire bus and quickly. The system goes from "firewire dead" to "firewire OK" with no restart needed.
I stumbled upon this solution by accident but I do not know why or how it works. It seems that Skype initializes the firewire bus in a way that cures the problem. Maybe Apple should take a look at the Skype firewire code and use it to improve the firewire initialization during system power up ?
