Videoclips in iPhoto

Hi!
I use my Nokia N95 8GB to take pictures and videoclips. Then I import these files to iPhoto on my MacBook (using Nokia Multimedia Transfer). This works fine.
Just now I tried to create a smart album. I set the smart album to include the files from a specific camera model - my Nokia N95 8GB. I find this handy because in the future I'm gonna use multiple cameras on my MacBook. This way, the files are separated nicely into different smart albums.
But when I had created the smart album, I noticed that only my pictures went into the created album - not the videoclips! When I select "Show info..." in any photo, I can see details about the camera with which the photo was taken. But with the videoclips, there aren't any details about the camera! So this is why the videoclips won't go into the smart album with files from my Nokia N95 8GB - iPhoto doesn't "know" which camera the files are from.
Can anyone help me with this? Is this a problem with iPhoto, the Nokia Multimedia Transfer application, or my Nokia N95 8GB?
Thank you in advance

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Photos from digital cameras contain EXIF data which contain the infor that the Smart Albums use. Video files do not contain any such embedded data so are not searchable by those means. You may have to assign a keyword to those files and have the smart album search based on the keyword.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you able to play the clips manually outside of iPhoto? Drag one to the desktop and try playing there. It's more likely a Quicktime issue than an iPhoto one.
Have you been able to play those clips previously? When did the problem start, with what system and iPhoto versions?

    Hallo!

  • IPhoto 6.0.2 Wishlist

I know it's not christmas, but here is my wishlist for iPhoto 6.0.2:
    - "Group Keywords"
If you have a lot of keywords you may want to group them, so the list doesn't become too crowded.
    - "Sort Keywords Alphabetically"
Of course we all want to have a "sort keywords alphabetically" option.
    - "Retain Or Delete Original File?"
When applying changes to a photo, iPhoto should ask me if I want to retain the original file or replace it. Not everybody wants to always keep the original files until the day he dies.
    - Slideshow:
I want an option to show keywords or comments when running a slideshow (ok, iPhoto can show titles, but no keywords or comments - why?)
    - "Show Original/Modified File"
Apple, please give us this feature, we are used to it from iTunes.
    - Improved Library Management:
If you want to manage separate libraries on a Mac, you'll have to use tools like iPhoto Buddy or iPhoto Library Manager. If you want to keep separate libraries on two or more Macs, you'll be missing an easy sync tool, too. (You may want to keep one main library on the Mac at home and a second one on the Book when traveling; after returning home, these two libraries should be easily merged, retaining keywords, comments and all other changes.)
Apple really should integrate improved management features for separate libraries into iPhoto itself, as well as a "merge library" or "sync library" function.
    - Video Clip Integration to Slideshows:
If you have taken pix and videoclips of an event, you may want to see them displayed in a slide show right in the order you've taken them. So iPhoto should support video clips right within a slideshow (like Graphic Converter does).
    - Full IPTC support!
iPhotos keywords and comments system is an island.

Another good application for managing multiple libraries is iPhoto Library Manager. The free version is like iPhoto Buddy. The paid version lets you move photos between libraries while maintaining keywords, comments, titles, etc. Currently the only way to do so. Either application is very slick in moving between libraries.

  • IPhoto 11 video and manual sorting..

Hi all. I was fortunate and went through the upgrade without any issues. Everything went smooth. However I have two issues after the upgrade - and still after updating to 9.0.1.
Videoclips: When playing a slideshow the videoclips from my camera are blue colour only. All colours are fine in thumbnails in iPhoto and when playing the clips separately.
*Manual sorting*: Has been totally messed up in some of my albums. Sorting by date works fine but the manual sorting is what I want and what I spent many many hours on to perfect my visual presentations. That work seems to be lost now.
I guess I have been lucky compared to the rest of you, but it seems like Apple has - one more time - released software without properly testing their new stuff.
    Sad but true...

Create a new test library, import several photos, put them in an album and see if you can sort them manually. If you can this points to a damaged library.
If you can't sort in the test library log into another user account on your Mac and try the test there. If you can't then it seems a reinstall of iPhoto is warranted. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder, reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on and apply the latest updater.
If you can sort in the other user account then your account appears to be the culprit. It could be a preference file other that iPhoto's that's causing the problem. Post back with the results and if you need to test your account I'll give you directions.

  • Glitch with sound while making slideshows with videoclips?

Is anyone else having this problem?
I make a slideshow with photos and videoclips. I add music to the slideshow. The music plays, and when the video clip comes on the music softens. However, no sound is played from the video clip. I know this clip works, if I double-click on it it plays fine in Quicktime.
However, with certain other video clips, the sound from those plays fine. I've seen from these posts that a few others seem to think that clips from one camera might play sound, but not another. That does not make sense to me.
Does anyone have any bright ideas in solving my problem? Thanks!

I found the glitch in iPhoto.
If you have a managed library the sound comes out of the video clip during a slideshow.
If you have a referenced library the audio does not get copied over and so there is no sound on your soundclip when doing a slideshow.

  • IPhoto - Loading takes 5-10 minutes

    Hi,
When I start iPhoto, it takes about 5-10 minutes to load, before i get can do anything with iPhoto. The same thing happen from FrontRow, it takes forever to display photos
from my two album (with 77 & 50 photos only - no videoclips).
I've posted this problem earlier, and Terence asked me to
rebuild the iPhoto database, which i did, but this does not
    appear to solve the problem.
    Please advice.
    Thanks

Also do you have all your rolls open when iPhoto is launched? How much free space do you have on your boot drive?
    Do you Twango?

  • Iphoto crashing after using mini-dvi to video adapter

Hi, IPhoto on my Macbook is crashing. I can open it, then as soon as I scroll down it locks up and I have to force quit.
This started happening right after I used a Mini-DVI to Video Adapter cable to hook my macbook up to my TV. The adapter/s-video connection worked and I was able to see the video on the tv. But iphoto immediately locked up the computer when I went to slide show and now it locks every time I open it.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you:)
    Dorothy

It means that the issue resides in your existing Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Cannot open and update IPhoto after upgrading to OXYosemite

From the App store, I downloaded and installed OXYosemite. There are 2 more updates available: iPhoto and iMovie. When I try to upload them, the notice I get is "Update Unavailable with This Apple ID  This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
I have 2 apple IDs when I inquire about my ids. Signing in App Store with either of them, doesn't resolve the problem. I get the same notice. iTunes, Mac, mobile downloads, all use the same apple IP, only for the computer downloads from App Store isn't working.
    What should I do?
    Thanks, Sev

I have the same problem and can't find out how to correct it.  Unable to update iPhoto or iMovie .. I get the same message as above user.  Help!

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto slideshow using mini-dvi to video adapter

When using the mini-dvi to video adapter to connect to my widescreen tv (via composite), to show iPhoto slideshows, the transistions between slides dont apear and there are no ken burns effects. The slideshow runs fine on my MacBook display (ie when not conected to the tv), and the is no other distortion or flickering (as reported in other threads), this seems odd to me or is it just a limitation of analogue output.
    2Ghz MacBook, White   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It means that the issue resides in your existing Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

  • I create a birthday calendar in iCal and then click on it in iphoto at the begining of the calendar project each year.  Some how the birthday did not populate the photo calendar.  Is there a way to add the birthday iCal calendar into the calendar project?

I created a birthday calendar to use in iphoto for calendar.  When a new calendar project is started each year, I click on it in.  Some how the birthday did not populate the photo calendar this year.  The photo calendar is almost complete.  Is there a way to add the birthday iCal calendar into the calendar project? I would prefer not to start over.

    Hi,
If you first select the calendar on the left, so that its background is highlighted blue/grey, when you make a new events they should be added to that calendar.
    Best wishes

Using OX X 10.7.5 cannot send email from within iPhoto.  I get this error message: "Your email did not go through because the server did not reply."
If I change the preference to use email, everything goes fine but I lose the formatting feature.

    iPhoto Menu ->

Delete and recreate your email settings.
Alternatively, use Apple's Mail for the job. It has Templates too - and more of them. Check out the Stationery...
