Videoguys Budget DIY9 PC Build Advice

Looking for guidance regarding a PC build based on the Videoguys DIY9 project.  I am trying to keep this in the area of $1500 to $2000.  I primarily use Premiere and AE CS6.
1. Best hardware for setting up Raid Storage drives inside the tower. Is it better to go 4x 1TB drives in RAID5 or 2x 2TB drives in RAID0?
2. Compatibility of all the parts and the Power supply.
3. To go with an 256GB SSD for the boot drive or have the extra storage a normal 1TB 7200 rpm drive will provide.
4. Video cards -- just too many options it seems
Any input that could help me solidify this thing and get it built would be appreciated!

After reading a lot more - I now have a much better idea about what I want to build.  Was wondering if you can take a quick look at this final parts compilation and just let me know if you think it needs adjusting as well as whether you would lean one way or the other where 2 different parts are indicated.  Thanks for your time!
I decided to go with a double RAID0 configuration off the motherboard because my primary concern is speed and redundancy is not really necessary.  I back up everything I do externally, and nothing I work on is critical if the project is lost between backups.
Questions remaining are whether it's better to go with the overclocked videocard, and whether there are better cases in this price range.  All the cases seem pretty standard to me among  Antec, Cooler Master, and Azza.  Also, is a liquid CPU cooler necessary, or is this just a gamer's type accessory?  I do not plan on overclocking to begin with.  Also, the Power supply min recommended by the ASUSTeK calculator is 850W...might it be smarter to just go a touch higher?

  • Photoshop Computer Build Advice

    Hi All,
    I am retiring an 8 year old iMac and making the switch to a custom build PC. I'm using Photoshop to dust and color correct large 4x5 scan files (1.2GB 16bit files) for inkjet, digital-c print, and digital silver print output. I am also processing raw files (Sony A7r) using Camera Raw and Lightroom. Most of my files only have 3 - 5 adjustment layers but some can get to 10 or 12 layers if I am compositing or stitching files. I am not doing any 3D or video work. My main concerns are speed when working with large files, longevity of use and (hopefully) long term compatibility with Adobe programs. I also use Indesign, Dreamweaver, Bridge, Office Suite Programs and do your average amount of work on the web. I have a keyboard and mouse and already do all of my working file storage on a CRU DataPort RTX 2-Bay RAID (mirrored with regular disk rotation) using eSATA or Firewire 800.
    Here is the build I am thinking about and would appreciate any comments, suggestions, or words of advice:

  • Another request for P55-GD80 new build advice

    Hello! This is my first time using an MSI motherboard and I was hoping to get some advice for when I put my system together.  My old system was ~14 months old - I added some RAM just before xmas and I'm pretty sure I fried the mobo due to static. Anyway, since I was going to be replacing the motherboard, I decided to upgrade the entire system.
    Here's what I ordered last week...
    MSI P55-GD80 motherboard
    Patriot Viper II PVV34G1600LLKB, 8-8-8-24, 1.65V (two 4x2gb kits)
    Core i5-750 Lynnfield Model BX80605I5750 w/ Thermaltake Silent 1156 CLP0552 CPU Cooler
    Crucial 64GB SATA II SSD
    Win 7 Pro 64-bit OEM
    Powercolor AX5770 1GBD5-DH PCI-E 2.1 x16 video card
    Anti-static wrist strap with cord
    Everything else will be from my "old" system (including the PC Power & Cooling S75CF 750W EPS12V power supply). Since I won't be able to boot from my old Vista HDD, I was planning to start with the SSD and a fresh install of Win 7.  After that, I'll add in my old "C:" boot drive as a slave along with the other 2 slave/data HDDs from my old system. This is all going into a Lian Li full tower case so space/airflow for the HDDs shouldn't be an issue.
    A few questions about my setup...
    SATA setup:  I'm going to have a total of 6 SATA II drives (1x SSD, 3x HDD and 2x DVD±R).  Is there any advantage to using all 6 "black" SATA ports for everything vs using the two "blue" SATA ports for my DVD drives?  I work with photography/graphic design and it's possible that I could be adding another data HDD sometime in the future. All HDDs are the same brand but different sizes and I will not be running any type of RAID configuration.
    OC Genie:  I plan to use the OC Genie feature on this motherboard.  Will I need to change anything in BIOS (specifically- RAM settings) or will the OC Genie take care of everything for me with the push of a button?  I realize that the OC Genie won't give me "cutting edge" OC performance but I'm not knowledgeable (or brave) enough to go into BIOS and do everything manually.  I want some increased performance but stability is more important.
    BIOS #1:  Is there anything else in the BIOS that I need to be aware of when setting my new system up?
    BIOS #2:  I have no idea which version of the BIOS is going to be on this motherboard. Is there a certain version I want right away or should I set up the system with whatever version is installed and only upgrade if it's not performing correctly?
    I looked through some posts on the first few pages of this forum and didn't see answers to my questions.  If I missed something, I'm sorry for the duplication.  Also, I apologize in advance if any of these are "dumb" questions.  I've built my last 3 systems over the past 8 years, and each time I build a new one it seems like I try to push the envelope a little further, and thus I run into technical issues that are over my head.  I thought this time it might be wise to try to get some info before I experience (or create) any problems with this new setup.   Thanks in advance for your help!!

    Sorry to bump my own thread.  I put everything together and I'm having a problem that hopefully someone can help me with.
    I flashed the BIOS from 1.4 to 1.6 and now when I boot I get a CMOS CHECKSUM BAD.  I'm able to F1 to BIOS setup and then exit into Windows but I'd like to get this fixed.  I have not done anything to OC the system yet - everything is running stock.  Do I need to reset the CMOS on the board?  I did not do that after flashing.

  • NOOB FIRST BUILD ADVICE LIST INCLUDED COMPATIBILITY

    Hello,
    I’m looking to take a leap and build my own computer for the first time using top components. Any advice, tips, criticisms would be appreciated.
    I need to know if the list below will work together. Am I missing anything? Have I chosen something that is really not needed?
    I am a photographer and deal with mass amounts of photos, videos, music etc. I also want to play games occasionally, or watch a DVD.
    I am starting from scratch, bringing no parts from other places. All new.
    How does the following combination stack up? Thank you in advance for any help to the above questions and your time.

    My suggestion would be to build two separate PCs - one for editing, the other for games. This is because (as Harm Millaard mentioned) games have absolutely no place at all whatsoever in an editing system because many games install unnecessary and performance-degrading bloatware that could make that ultra-fast system run as slow as or slower than the average six-year-old PC with one-fourth as much RAM.
    But if you can't afford (or don't have enough room for) a second PC, you'll have to make compromises. Which is more important? Editing/rendering/encoding performance or gaming performance?
    With that said, what you have is a bit of a "penny wise, pound foolish" type of build. Especially when the motherboard and CPU combo is almost as expensive as some X79 and i7-3930K combos. The P8Z77-V Deluxe costs almost $300 by itself, and doesn't perform all that much better (nor do they overclock all that much higher) than far cheaper ($150-ish) Z77 motherboards. And 16GB of RAM just isn't quite enough total RAM for Premiere Pro CS6; you need 24GB or 32GB for CS6 to run at its best. In fact, I had tested CS6 on my main i7-2600K system with a GeForce GTX 560 Ti 448 with 1.25GB of VRAM with the system equipped with 16GB and again with 24GB (the latter adding two 4GB DIMMs to the existing two 8GB DIMMs): Adding that extra 8GB of RAM (making it 24GB) actually improved the MPEG-2 DVD performance in PPBM5 by roughly 40 seconds. Instead of 113 seconds with 16GB, I achieved a result of 73 seconds with 24GB.

  • 1310 Bridge-Building to Building advice.

    I am looking at implementing building to building wireless using Cisco 1310 bridges. This would be a backup link between the 2 buildings. The primary link is 3 T-1's. There are about 250 users connecting back here for application and internet. I am assuming that since the speed over the wireless is more than the existing T-1's that there shouldn't be a problem with latency. Am I missing anything with my thinking?
    Thanks

    Hey there,
    If you use a BR1310 to cover 3 T1s you should be fine.
    The BR1310 can get up to 54mbs (28mbs in reality due the the nature of half duplex devices such as these bridges).So even with less than ideal signal quality and strength you should have no problem getting that kind of throughput.Ideal links get in the low to mid 20s.
    Hope this helps.

  • Build advice

    hi,
    i am building a flex app which is a world map with
    destination labels e.g. north america. when the user hovers over
    the label for north america, a listbox should appear containing the
    names of holiday companies which go there. the holiday companies
    are in an xml file which i have successfully accessed using a
    datagrid for testing. the xml file will be updated from a database
    using php (that part is covered).
    what i need to know is what method to use for getting the
    data into actionscript so that i can manipulate it and populate
    listboxes, according to where the user's mouse is.
    the remote xml example in the help files doesn't work and I'm
    not used to AS3 (I have used as2 in flash 8). Normally I would
    populate some arrays with the XML data and use those arrays to
    populate the listboxes. Please can someone let me know how to do
    that in Flex Builder 2 with AS3, including whether I need to add
    import statement in my mx:script tags?
    thanks!
    lukemack.

    Below is some sample code. Post if you do not understand
    something.
    Tracy
    Sample code using HTTPService, e4x, handler function to
    populate a list item.
    Also shows usage of AsyncToken.
    The DataGrid tag:
    <mx:DataGrid id="dg" dataProvider="{_xlcMyListData}"
    .../>
    The HTTPService tag:
    <mx:HTTPService id="service" resultFormat="e4x"
    result="onResult(event)" fault="..../>
    Script block declaration:
    import mx.rpc.Events.ResultEvent;
    [Bindable]private var _xlcMyListData:XMLListCollection;
    Invoke send:
    var oRequest:Object = new Object();
    oRequest.Arg1 = "value1";
    var callToken:AsyncToken = service.send(oRequest);
    token.callId = "myQuery1";
    Result Handler function:
    private function onResult(oEvent:ResultEvent):void {
    var xmlResult:XML = XML(event.result); //converts result
    Object to XML. can also use "as" operator
    var xlMyListData:XMLList = xmlResult.myListData; //depends
    on xml format, is row data
    _xlcMyListData = new XMLListCollection(xlMyListData); //wrap
    the XMLList in a collection
    trace(_xlcMyListData.toXMLString()); //so you can see
    exactly how to specify dataField or build labelFunction
    var callToken:AsyncToken = oEvent.token;
    var sCallId = callToken.callId; //"myQuery1"
    switch(sCallId) {
    case "myQuery1":
    doQuery2();
    break;
    }//onResult

  • 1st MSI Build Advice? (XP90, Drivers, Ram, & Raptor)

    First off -- I want to say that I have been lurking here for the past few months -- amassing my components for my first MSI Build. The reason I finally decided to go with MSI was because of the support and the community I found here -- every one of the moderators and the community members are happy to share ideas, thoughts, and problem solving tips. My hats off to all you guys for making the MSI board what it is today.
    All my components are listed in my Sig -- I have read through all the stickies -- which seemed to answer all my building questions except a small handful -- so I am posting today so I have everything inline for the end of the week build for my computer.
    1.) Thermalright Heatsink XP90 -- I remember reading in a post (which I can't get my fingers on now) that there is a correct way to orient the heat pipes when you set the PCB on its edge (like they do in the "standard" cases.) Can anyone help me out here?
    2.) Drivers -- I plan on burning the Unified Nvidia Drivers to a CD-ROM for installation from the webiste -- Version 6.53, release date March 17th.
    Now -- from all the posts I have read I understand the Nvidia IDE drivers a bit shakey -- and everyone says to use the Windows XP version IDE drivers -- how do you go about doing this from the device manager?
    3.) RAM -- I bought the Corsair Value RAM -- the only thing I know about this is the CAS is 2.5. Do I need to manually set anything within the BIOS or can I leave it on Auto to get started?
    4.) WD Raptor -- I have a feeling that this HD runs HOT -- any suggestions on cooling or is having a fan run over the HD enough? I bought the "official" Western Digital SATA cable ($12??!??) just not to have to worry about the connection side to the PCB. I haven't seen it yet, but it is supposed to be able to not shake loose from the HD.
    I think that should do it -- I tried to use all the knowledge I have found through the weeks to formulate my questions! If anyone has anything else to suggest, I am open to it.
    Also -- I know the weakness in my setup is the Powersupply (if I had knew what I know now about Rosewill....)  and possibly the RAM -- so -- if I start having problems -- I am probably going to toss the Powersupply first. I went with the straight non-platinum version of the Neo4 because 1.) I saved a few bucks and 2.) I can't imagine putting more than 4 SATA devices into my computer nor needing the extra Ethernet port.
    Thanks.
    aacarter

    The nVdia Unified Driver setup will give you the option to pick the drivers you want to install. Just don't choose the SW IDE drivers and you should be ok.
    In the even that you do install them, just perform a roll back of the driver from device manager.

  • Need Build Advice/Critique Please

    This is my first post here so I'll start with a little info about myself and my video editing needs.  I'm an amateur when it comes to Adobe Premiere.  I used Vegas for a few videos.  I now have a subscription to the Creative Cloud, and have made a few videos in the past for work (taking 3D animations and splicing segments together, adding a couple logos, effects, etc. - nothing too fancy) as well as a couple for personal use.  My edits consist mostly of splicing video clips (from my Canon 60D DSLR), overlaying a music track, then sticking an intro at the beginning...  Nothing fancy.  I'd certainly like to do better and increase my skillset, create better intros, etc...
    Aside from my 8-5, I run a successful home based leather holster business in my spare time.  But, making holsters is a TON of work, so...  early on, I made a few tutorial videos available via online rental (pay a few bucks, get viewing access for 24 hours).  They sold pretty well, but when I upgraded my website I couldn't get the rental system to work so I decided to make them freely avaialble on YouTube and try monetizing them with little success so far.  With my new videos, I might like to switch back to the rental system if I can make it work on my website.
    My videos are generally just tutorials intended to teach people how to make leather holsters and other leather items - I guess you'd say I'm a YouTube'r, though I only have a handfull of videos out there currently (my current computer ran out of storage space and it's too old and slow to be of much use).  My family photo collection is around 100GB and growing (3 young kids).  I use Photoshop pretty heavily at work, and will use it at home, though less intensively (cleaning up pattern scans, editing photos, etc.).
    To give you an idea of the type of videos I've made, and will likely continue to make (hopefully gradually better over time once I can afford better lighting, etc.), you can look here:
    http://www.adamsleatherworks.com/hows-it-made/
    Anyway, I'm certainly no pro editor, and I don't have a ton of money to spend, so please take a look at this list and let me know what you think....
    Motherboard - ASRock X79 Extreme6 LGA 2011 - $220
    CPU - Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6GHz LGA 2011 - $230
    RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB (4 x 4GB) 1600 - $100
    Drive C (OS & Programs) - OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD - $120
    Drive D (Media & Projects, Photos, Documents, etc.) - Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 2TB - $90
    Drive E (Page-file, Exports) - OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD - $120
    Drive F (Swap, Previews) - OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD - $120
    Drive G (Backup of D drive) - debating on just using my WD Passport external drive for now (free, for now)
    Optical Drive - LG 14x SATA Blu-ray interal rewriter - $80
    Case - Fractal Design Define R4 ATX Mid Tower - $125
    Power Supply - EVGA SuperNOVA NEX750G 750W 80 Plus Gold - $140
    CPU Cooler - Corsair Hydro H100 - $105
    Extra Fans (2) - Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm - $16.25 each
    Video Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB - $220
    OS - Windows 8 Pro 64bit - $140
    Media Card Reader - Kingston FCR-HS3 15-in-1 USB 3.0 - $27
    Mouse/Keyboard - Logitech MK550 Wireless - $65
    Monitors (2) - 23" to 24" matching LCD screens @ 1920x1080 - $170 each
    The total for that list is around $2,345, almost exclusively from www.newegg.com, with just a couple items from Amazon.  Please bear in mind it includes new monitors and a mouse/keyboard combo.  I want big monitors, but they don't have to be stellar performers.  Color accuracy (while desired) isn't critical.  I'm not a wedding photographer or anything like that...
    I'm not sure if I need to be using RAID 1 on the D: drive - I'm pretty good about backing up my files to my WD Passport.  I don't know that I need RAID 0 for speed since I'm not doing a ton of editing, nor will my timelines have many layers to them.  I think RAID 10 is a little overkill for someone like me, but I'm open to input from others.
    Lastly - I'm curious what the routine is for recovering space on your "D" drive once you've edited and ouput your videos.  I look at all these YouTube'ers that have hundreds of hour long videos and always wonder what kind of storage system they have in place - I ask, but they never answer!  I'm leaning towards archiving my current videos to blu-ray discs, then deleting them from my drives...?  Or should I store my "business" related videos on a dedicated drive, back it up via RAID 1, then migrate those to larger drives as time goes on and never actually delete/remove any of my videos?  I have little experience with RAID, so I'm not sure what the actual process is for migrating to larger drives.
    Anyway, enough rambling, and I look forward to whatever help you folks can provide.
    Thanks,
    Eric Adams

    I put some ideas on my web page at http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM
    The "maximum" computer I list is similar to what you show... but I would suggest the full tower case I list, since it will be better for drive/cabling space and cooling
    In case you want to expand in the future, consider 2x8Gig ram sticks

  • First time build check, with some questions

    After much back & forth, I’m about to take the plunge and do my own build.  It seems similar to many others here have done, and is pretty close to the VideoGuys DIY build, but it’s my first time and I do have a few questions, so I thought I’d post and get comments.  Here are my specs:
    Antec Twelve Hundred V3 Black Steel ATX Full Tower Unbeatable Gaming Case
    ASUS P9X79 PRO LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with USB BIOS
    Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 2011 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor BX80619i73930K
    EVGA 04G-P4-2673-KR GeForce GTX 670 Superclocked+ w/Backplate 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
    CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX850 (CMPSU-850AX) 850W ATX12V v2.31 / EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular PSU
    Intel BXRTS2011LC Liquid-cooled Thermal Solution For the LGA2011 Socket
    VANTEC 2+1 FireWire 800/400 PCIe Combo Host Card Model UGT-FW210 (Ti chipset)
    1 Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drives (media drive)
    1 Western Digital Caviar Black  1 TB 7200 rpm SATA 3.0 (Boot drive)
    1 Hitachi 7200rpm 1 TB SATA 3.0 (renders and exports)
    64 GBof Crucial RAM - 8GB 240-pin DIMM  DDR3 PC3-12800
    • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64 •
    I plan on overclocking using the ASUS auto overclock feature.  From what I’ve read 4.3 seems to be a reliable speed to shoot for.  The videos I’ve watched on the auto overclocking with the UEFI interface look straightforward.
    I’m going to use the 670 to power 2 editing monitors via DVI, and an ASUS P24A6 via HDMI as a client monitor.
    For the foreseeable future, I’ll be editing AVCHD footage.  Don’t do much motion gfx work, mainly cuts & dissolves, with a fair amount of color correction & grading applied.  How does this system look to do with this configuration with this workflow?
    Also, any feedback on cooling appreciated.  It looks like the Noctura has some compatibility issues with this board fully populated with Crucial RAM, so I’m going with the Intel liquid cooler, which looks easy to install and was recommended by ADK.  With this case and this cooler, will I be good or is there any other type of cooling I should add to cool the RAM or the PSU?
    Anything else I’m missing?  Thanks much to all who post here.  Special thanks to ADK, their participation here is invaluable and the advice they gave me was much appreciated.  Were this system my main source of income, I’d buy from them for sure.

    Stu,
    Looks like you have done a lot of work for this to be your first pass here as a build list; there is a lot more that looks right than wrong.
    Regarding how is this system for your workflow? This PC would certainly do what you want it to do.
    Regarding cooling, RAM and PSU will be fine.
    Regarding is anything missing, yes a Blu-ray burner.
    You did not state whether you want to A) build this and leave it alone for years, or B) make some upgrades in the future. If B), I only have a suggestion for your RAM choice. If A), I do have some suggested tweaks to how you spend your budget for this build.
    You've heard it here before, but it is so true that Adobe has mastered the ability to tax just about all of your PC components (cpu, RAM, bus, drives, and video card) with Premiere Pro CS5 and above in order to make HD editing fast and fun. This makes balance important and in some ways a system is only as strong as its weakest link.
    Your current plans strike me as:
    CPU = A+, RAM = A+++ on paper, but possibly a bad idea, Drives = B-, GPU = A-.
    My only strong suggestion is to go for 32GB of 1600 RAM. You want to do a moderately strong OC on the CPU and the memory controller of the 3930k is not strong enough to pull this off.
    Minor suggestions: A) more drives - go for at least one 2x1TB RAID 0 array for media, projects, and scratch (adding one more drive). B) SSD for boot - for spending as much as you are here, I think your build deserves a 128GB SSD for the boot/OS drive - no this will not help after Premiere Pro has started and you are editing, but it will make the PC faster for lots of other things that most users do.

    Jim

  • Unable to post FR50 (Original Budget) for New Fund Center

    Dear All,
    We are in ECC6.0 and using Former Budgeting, Our business team created a new fund center and assigned it to cost center in the derivation rule.
    Before they granted original budget using FR50, the business users started posting various invoices, expenses, POs, PRs against the cost center accordingly the Available Budget became Negative.
    Now they are trying to post Original Budget for the new fundcenter using FR50, however system gives an error saying Payment Budget exceeded.
    Please advice how to grant budget in such situations, we had an alternative to reverse all commitments and actuals posted against the fundcenter and grant budget, this worked in our test environment. However in Production we will not be able to do this due to too much volume already posted.
    Is there a way to fix this, note that Availability control is active and not sure why system allowed to post without budget.
    Any pointers, is this how standard SAP behaves or are we missing something.
    We have also checked on master data elements of commitment item/fundcenter.. everythign looks fine.
    request your inputs.
    regards
    Diwakar

    Hi,
    I believe you are using Former Budgeting. Please check below if this is not the cause for your issue:
    Please check the following customizing that you have done in your system:
    SPRO -> Public Sector Management -> Funds Management Government -> Former Budgeting -> Availability Control -> Define Parameters for Availability Control
    See if you have set the flag: Check on lowest budget object with budget in your customizing.
    Please check the documentation about this flag, specially this part:
    "If you do not set the indicator, availability control runs against the first budget object, even if it has received NO BUDGET. This is the setting in the system as delivered."
    You can check also report BPINDAN2_NEW.
    This means that the budget is going to be checked in the first object with budget in your budget hierarchy.
    If this is your case, you have only two options:
    1.- Remove the negative budget you have in the combination of funds center/commitment item.
    2.- Add the Combination funds center/commitment item to the exemption list of AVC.
    I will prefer that you do the first option, as for me sounds strange to have negative budget, but this is one decision that you need to discuss it internally in your company.
    If you choose any of the 2 options above, please do not forget to reconstruct your budget and assigned values AFTER you have done one of the options above, with the following transactions (in this order):
    1.- Run transaction FMBV in order to reconstruct Budget values.
    2.- Run report RFFMRC04 in Test mode in order to check if there is still some inconsistency.
    3.- If RFFMRC04 shows inconsistencies, then run this report in Update Mode.
    4.- Reconstruct distributed values with transaction FM9P
    5.- Reconstruct Total values with transaction FM9Q
    6.- Reconstruct assigned values with FMBV again.
    I hope this helps.
    Best Regards,
    Vanessa.

  • Funds Management - Budget Structure

    Hello -
    Is it required to create budget structure? and make Budget address check active in version. I understand  we can restrict the budgetable addresses. In what way does it serve the business purpose.
    I am thinking of implementing BCS without budget structure ( bud address / posting address etc.) in place. Am I going far off from the standard, Any suggestions?
    If you have implemented FM, did you create budget structure.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
    Nothing is unstandard here; in 40% of projects I implemented FM in, the client preferred not to maintain budget structure following our advice as it was not in the business requirements.

    Eli

  • Cisco Security Manager Advice

    Hi,
    I'm looking into Cisco Security Manager. From what I understand you can monitor and manage Cisco security appliances. I'm interested in the monitoring of our Cisco ASAs - specifically, monitoring VPN sessions and their  trending over months at a time and I would like to monitor other Cisco devices on the network for link problems/performance and such - I don't want to use Cisco Security Manager as a management point. Would Cisco Security Manager not be the right tool for this?
    We have SolarWinds and I've heard that you can assign UnDPs(Device Pollers) to devices you want to monitor, including ASAs and these pollers can give you trending for VPN sessions with graphing. I just want to make the most of our budget dollars.
    Any advice?
    Thanks, Pat.

    CSM 4.3 and above can be used to monitor VPN sessions on Cisco ASAs. You can definitely use CSM as a monitoring only solution for ASAs (without using it for management). You can also explicitly disable policy change privileges for all admins so they do not modify stuff by mistake. Note however that CSM is primarily focused on end-to-end management scenarios (including policy change, troubleshooting, reporting, etc). So you may not find all the bells and whistles in CSM for monitoring scenarios that you may find with some of the pure monitoring only solutions.

  • Error when budgeting for Funded Program in FMBBC

    Dear All,
    I have activated funded program in the spro config : Activate Account Assignment Elements and we wish to use funded program for minor projects. Apart from Funded program, we are using funds center for department budget.
    when i budget for funded program in FMBBC along with commitment item I am getting an error as below.
    Enter a funds center
    Message no. FMKU031
    My question is why should I enter funds center, i want to budget for funded program and through derive funded program for budget consumption.
    Please advice what steps/configuration must be performed to resolve this as it is stopping testing.
    Thanks and regards
    Abishay Solomon

    Hi,
    You must use the following master data elements in Funds Management:
    Commitment items
    You use commitment items to map out functional units (expenditure and revenue structures) in a hierarchy. They divide up the content of the budget and the business transactions affecting liquidity into revenue items and expenditure items.
    Funds centers
    You use funds center to represent the organizational units (responsibility areas, departments, projects) of your organization.
    See the online help:
    [http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/f0/ca3480260211d28a430000e829fbbd/content.htm]
    So, you will need to use Commitment item and Funds Center along with your Funded Program
    Kind regards

  • Hardware for Java build server

    I don't know if this is the correct area for the question, so I apologise if it is not...
    The company I work for is budgeting a seperate build server for our developers to use. We are currently 100% sparc in the server environment. Does anyone have any real work benchmarks or experience with using different architectures for compiling code? We are looking at benchmarks between T2000, V40z, and x4200. It looks like we will get all three to get our hands on to test ourselves, but wanted to know if this has already been done and documented somewhere. The server will not be doing any application/db/etc work, just compiling. Are the FP shortcomings of the T2000 any issue with java compiliation? Would a 2x or 4x dual-core opteron be faster? Thanks in advance.

    Depending on the size of your projects, the frequency of buildcycles, etc., you might just pull one of your oldest servers out of your serverfarm (and put a new one in instead) and use that.
    That's the way most companies (and individuals) do it.
    That machine doesn't have to be blazing fast, it hardly matters if a build takes 10 seconds or 30 for example, as usually people won't be waiting for it (or if they are they have other things to do while waiting like smoking a fag or drinking coffee which they'd otherwise do after the build was complete).
    At home I use an old laptop with a Celeron 400 and 196MB RAM as my buildbox.
    For my single project it's plenty fast enough, taking maybe 2 minutes when on my P4-2.4 with 1.5GB RAM it takes just over 1 minute to build the same project.
    It could easily handle a lot more too, but at the moment I have no need for that excess capacity.

  • Building a new Premiere/After Effects Rig

    Yes another rig building advice question but I would really would appreciate any advice and help that can be offered.
    Here is what i had in mind.
    Corsair Obsidian 750D Computer Cases
    Corsair RM850
    Asus X99-DELUXE/U3.1
    Intel Core i7-5930K CPU
    Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 32gb
    Cooler Master V8 GTS
    PNY GeForece GTX 970 Video Card
    256GB Samsung 850 Pro Series (OS Drive)
    WD Black 1 TB Hard Drive (Cache and Source)
    WD Black 1 TB Hard Drive (Render)
    WD Black 3TB Hard Drive (Storage)
    Windows 8.1
    Anything I am missing, should change or way off base about?

    case - if you want, silent cases are nice. such as the fractal design refine R5.
    psu - if you are going corsair, consider hx series and above.
    cpu cooler - might want to look at quieter mfg/models. noctua, phanteks, bequiet are a few.
    storage - might want to get another samsung pro ssd instead of hdd for cache.
