Videos  iMac G5 10.4.11

The video and sound are not in sync on my G5 10.4.11. What can I do?

Is this a general problem for all videos, or only for some videos?  Are you playing videos in a web browser (such as on YouTube), or playing video files that are stored on your iMac using QuickTime Player (or other video player)?

It would help to know what videos you are having trouble with?   Are these from specific internet links? Are these playing back commercial DVDs? Are these videos produced by iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or iDVD of home video? Are these videos imported from an external Firewire or USB adapter such as Elgato's devices. You give us little to go on.   Please give us more details what is going on?

  • Choppy Video, iMac not up to expectations

    Hi everyone,
my mac is driving me crazy since the day I got it. everytime I play a video in QTime, VLC or .... it's always slow, I mean the video. it's always losing frames which makes the experience very annoying. It never did what It was suppose to do from day one.
I have upgraded my Ram to 2G., have about 125G out 250G drive empty.
I have formatted and cleaned my system a couple of times and even with a fresh install, it's doing what it's doing?
I know there's a recall program by my s/n just missed the recall few digits.
    QP53207NSDZ.
not sure if you have any answers, but I will appreciate any input,
note: since 10.4.8 I am having Fans at full speed issues while it's sleeping (this is a new one). tried restarting, repair perm. with no luck
PLEASE HELP, THIS IS EMBARASSING, MY P3 WITH 512 RUNS THE SAME VIDEOS FASTER (DIVX OR DVD EVEN).
    THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT

"does it sounds like I am the only having this problem?"
You're not the only one. Reason why there is a Repair Extension Program for which your computer serial # does not qualify.
What I do not understand is, if you had these problems "since the day I got it" why didn't you report it to Apple ASAP or at least within the first 90 days of your FREE phone tech support?
Since your serial # is sort of "close" to the qualification # for the repair program I would contact Apple, ask to be transferred over to the"Customer Relations Department". They have more authority over Technical Support. See what they can do for you.
Otherwise, you may have no alternative but to take your computer to your local AASP & pay OOP since you did not elect to purchase AppleCare.
    Good luck!

  • Connect iMac MiniDisplay port to VGA or composite projector, PLEASE!??

I have an iMac and an Epson Powerlite 77c projector I am wanting to link up. I need to go from the minidisplay port in the back of the imac to either composite or vga (female) connection. Apple has a minidisplay to vga adapter which i'm assuming will work.
Epson Projector connections - VGA (female,) Video and audio in (composite), S-video
iMac display connections- Mini display port
Would it be better to use vga or composite for watching movies and using the computer through the projector?
And...if i am thinking of the correct cable i'm also going to need an extension to actually get to the monitor. Since the minidisplay to vga cable is female and so is the vga input on the projector, Is there such thing as male-male vga cable and would it send the signal properly from the imac to the projector?
Is there any other way to link these two devices up? Component switch or wireless transmitter?
    Thanks

Apple has a minidisplay to vga adapter which i'm assuming will work.
    Yes, it will work fine!
Would it be better to use vga or composite for watching movies and using the computer through the projector?
The iMac is not able to connect via composite cable at all. VGA, Mini Display Port, and HDMI (through adapter) are the only types of cabling that will work. Keep in mind that composite is the absolute WORST video quality you could hope for. Here is the scale from worst to best...
Composite, S Video, Component, VGA, DVI/HDMI/MDP (these last 3 are essentially the same quality)
Is there such thing as male-male vga cable and would it send the signal properly from the imac to the projector?
Yes, they are extremely common, and it will work fine. I would be surprised if there wasn't an extra cable of this sort already in the projector bag. It is standard gear for all of my office's projector sets.
Is there any other way to link these two devices up? Component switch or wireless transmitter?
The best connection you can make with the powerlite 77c is through VGA.

  • Question about the Mac Pro's Video Abilities

Hi, I'm strongly considering buying a new Mac. I've looked at the iMacs, but I am more used to Tower PCs. The Mac Pro's design and expandability is what I am used to. My question I have is concerning the graphics ability of the Mac Pro. Currently, I have a HP vs17e LCD monitor and an old Envision EN910 CRT monitor. I am very pleased with both of these monitors. Recently, I hooked up the HP monitor to this old 400MHz G3 8MB Video iMac, and it looked really good except the text sometimes looked a little blurry. I figure that the 8MB video might have had something to do with that. I do not care that much about widescreen displays or high performance $700 displays. I like to use simple, old style monitors. Would I be able to use either one of these screens on the Mac Pro with a GeForce 7300 card? Also, my next question is concerning the use of a TV as a secondary display. Our TV is a big Toshiba that has the old style CRT format. It accepts the yellow video connector and another connector that I think is called the S-Video (black connector). Can I buy adapters that will allow me to use the TV as a second display?

I would venture to say that if the monitor has a digital input capability, then the cable that would be used, is not like the output from the Mac. But, if you want to use the digital to analog adapter that comes with the Mac Pro, or is a purchased item for some of the lower priced Macs, the monitor will work as an analog VGA monitor. The gal that cuts my hair was telling me the horror story abount how they had to spend $200 to connect their Apple Cinema Display to their PC. I am pretty sure you won't have to spend that kind of money. So, if your monitor will accept an analog input, it should work. Many LCD monitors were only analog when they first came out years ago. I took a short look at yours. It appears to only have an analog input. My Mac Pro manual says to use the adapter if you want to hook up an analog VGA monitor. You can verify this at an Apple store before you purchase. I don't see any issues, but it is always best to "get it from the horses mouth".

  • Digital Video Converter

i'm a little confused about the difference between 'apple video adapter'
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/6224040/wo/WB5d0bwOOsXt2cAsU qR1RKWHU7b/3.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.5.3
and a digital video converter -
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php
i don’t want to mirror my ibooks monitor, but create an enlarged preview screen in fce
    can my ibook do this?
i also have another problem. The Canopus converter uses firewire, and i only have one firewire port.
To add, i want to upgrade from a usb2 external hard drive to a firewire! just because i've recently read that it will work better as a scratch disk.
i seem to have too many devises and not enough ports.

    About the first question:
    - the Apple Video Adapter allows to use an external TV screen in place of your iBook screen. I have it but never use it since my video (iMac 20") is far better than a TV screen.
    - a Digital Video Converter, instead, converts DV video into analog video and viceversa. In your case you could plug the DV end (firewire) to your iBook and the analog end to a TV set, and use it to "Print to Video" the Canvas of FCE during editing or previewing.
The main difference is that in the 1st case all you do on the iBook appears in the TV screen, in the 2nd case only the canvas output of FCE (or iMovie if needed).
To edit video use the 2nd solution only; this has the advantage to show in real time, during editing, exactly the final result of your movie (colors, interlacing problems, etc.).
You might have another option: most digital camcorders include a video converter and can be used in place of a stand alone Video Converter; if your digital camcorder allows it, use it in place of the Video Converter.
About your second question, if you switch to a firewire external drive you should be able to daisy chain your camcorder (or digital video converter) to the external drive, so the single firewire port on the iBook should be enough. Just be careful, I know some combinations of camcorders/hard drives don't work well together when daisy chained... Not my direct experience, but I read it in these discussions.

  • Imac g5 20" 2.1Ghz VS powerbook G4 17" 1.67Ghz

have just bought a refurb powerbook g4, 1.67ghz ppc processor with 2gb ddr2 ram
was considering migrating fully from imac g5 to this powerbook, but have just done a render test same project, just adding one filter (emboss) to 2mins of video
imac took _1min 31secs_ (i even had safari, firefox, real player, bluetooth file exchange, text edit and preview running at same time- processor set to auto))
powerbook took, (*groan*) wait for it, i mean, really, wait for it.... (had just fcp 5.1 running)
    _9mins 17secs!!!_
i work as a video editor, i have to use my own computer and use a desk to edit from (the deal is i do a bit of pa work as well) i want to be more mobile hence the purchase of the pbg4 which was the highest spec laptop at time of imac g5 purchase 2years ago.
Question is, is this massive deficite in performance is it normal? (8x slower) i was hoping there wouldnt be such a gap, i guess ill just have to cope until i can afford to migrate to intel mbp.
Would there be an app or setting somewhere that would give more juice?

    £1200 !!!
how many times over would the mbp be over the imac g5 (2.1Ghz g5, 1.5gb ram)?
i think ill wait till xmas/jan so battle it out with it for the next month or so.

  • Photo transfer Help?

I have my first ipod (30gb), a Christmas gift I'm giving, and I want it "loaded" on opening.
I was able to load the music, no problem, but photo's aren't showing up.
In iTunes (6.0), when I click on the iPod it offers me music, podcasts, contacts and calendars, but no "photo" option.
    I have iPhoto 5.0.4
    Santa is running late!

OK. I had to resinstall the Mac OS using the Archive and Install feature. Geez.
It took about an hour and a half, but did not damage any of my data or other applications and the iPod now works great. It shows photos and videos and downloads the music I'd purchased from iTunes.
It also now displays the correct firmware version for my iPod in iTunes.

  • Tiger 4.6 won't install - keeps restarting but wont boot from the dvd

    hello,
I purchased a brand new Tiger 4.6 retail directly from apple.com to install on my second computer, which is an imac that meets the system requirements. I am having exactly the same issue - i load the dvd, and the window opens and i double click on the installer. This prompts me to restart by clicking the button in the window, which I did. Then the computer restarts but the installer does not run. When i click on the installer it gives me the same restart window. I have tried holding the C button during reboot, and i have tried changing the boot drive through system preferences as well, but this does not work either.
Can someone PLEASE offer information that will help me to install this OS?
    thanks

I went back to look because I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy and was clear on what I saw before, and why it was unclear and ambiguous. This is the page with the complete sys requirements(the photos wont display here, but there is a photo of my model of imac, under the "imac" category):

Make sure your hardware can run Mac OS X Version 10.4 Tiger
Mac OS X Version 10.4 requires a Macintosh with:
    * PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    * Built-in FireWire
    * At least 256MB of physical RAM
    * A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
    * At least 3.0 GB of available space on your hard drive; 4GB of disk space if you install XCode 2 developer tools
    * DVD drive for installation (get CD media for $9.95)
Note: Mac OS X does not support processor upgrade cards. The amount of disk space required depends on your computer and the way you are installing Mac OS X. (this would have been the place to include the text about not supporting the imac 350)

  • Super cool custom Icons! !

I can't really find the area here for customizing your desktop but if you must, there is a cool trick that i've discovered on my own.
Do you like some of the windows Icons? How about the Linux super cool icons, they are in .png format.
No Problem, Use "FastIcns" (free download at apple.com)
Use it to convert any image even .PNG files to an .ICNS
    mac format.
Now you can replace those default Icons in the SYSTEM Resources.
Well, You can NOT use .ICNS file format to change your own icons in the your home directly (atleast i dont know how) so I used IconDroplet 1.0 Zach Weigand (free download)
Now those .ICN files are converted into usable icons for you to customize your home directory!! This is the free alternative.
I love the Linux icons, and some windows icons, so now with these 2 lil free apps, Customizing your Icons has no LIMITS!!!

  • Reset PMU worked.... but....

The screen has darkened again. I will try resetting PMU again, however, I am concerned that at some point this won't work.
How do I determine the cause of my monitor going dark (hard drive is running but monitor remains dark)? This computer suits our needs just fine, so I'd like to keep it going as long as possible.
If fixing is cost-prohibitive, can we hook it up to an external monitor?

Unfortunately the troubleshooting in the Apple Service Manual is basically willy-nilly board changing until it works. I don't even think Apple is sure what the cause is and I believe the problems and expense of fixing was a driving factor for the iMac G5 not having such a complex neck arrangement.
You can connect an external display.
For a 700/800MHz iMac you can connect a VGA display of either 1024x768 (15" iMac G4 models) or 1440x900 (17" iMac G4 models) other resolution displays are not recommended as Apple crippled the video card.
For a 1GHz, 1.25GHz iMac you can connect either a VGA display or any video device (like a TV) via S-Video or Composite Video. Again 15" iMacs should have 1024x768 external display, 17" iMac G4s a 1440x900 external display or 20" iMac G4s a 1680x1050 external display.
There is a hack to remove Apple's deliberate crippling of the graphics, but it is risky (although I've never heard of a failure). This would allow an external display of pretty much any resolution up to about 23"/24" models.

  • Final Cut Pro 10.1.2 update problem: shared items all deleted.

I upgraded from Final Cut Pro 10.1.1 today to 10.1.2. I've been working with 10.1.1 for a few weeks without problems and sharing videos. After the upgrade to 10.1.2 all the shared items that had been held within the "Shared items" folders have vanished and I cannot find them anywhere! Has anyone else had this problem?

You would need to restore from a system back-up.

  • Encoding time 1080i to 1080i aic

Exporting 1080i clips to 1080i (aic) takes time about 4 times of the length of the video (iMac 2.66 GHZ). Is this normal? Since the imported clips already are converted to aic (I think) I would have thought exporting to the same format would be a lot quicker.

With FCE (export to QT) the time is about the same as the length of the video.

  • IBook G4 Backlight won't light

    Hiya -
Got a bit of a problem with my iBook.
For a little while now, it's been having a now and then, intermittent problem where the backlight wouldn't come on, and to be honest, it's been a while since it happened, so I don't recall the particulars of what seemed to cause it., but putting it to sleep then waking it seemed to solve it.
Thing is, the other day, I accidentally dropped it while closed, it landed on the display case side, and now the backlight doesn't come on at all. I know it isn't that there's nothing on the screen - can see what's on it with the room lights bright or with a flashlight - so it's not a sleep problem. In fact, close the screen and the sleep light still comes on.
Anyway,  I am fairly technically adept, provided I've got instructions, so I was wondering what the probable causes might be. Loose cable connection? broken backlight bulb? Other? I'd like to repair it, and locate a manual if I can.
I know, it's a bit old - 5 years - but if buying a new one was the easiest option I'd have done it already, so not to be snarky, but please don't say "Dude, it's old, just get a new one." I see people saying that all the time to others, it never helps. Unless there's no other way that won't cost almost as much, I'd like repair advice.
Anyway, thanks - Hope someone can help me keep my iBook going a bit longer.

    Brett,
Turns out it's a logic board thing, not the inverter
Uhh who gave you that diagnosis given:
I know it isn't that there's nothing on the screen - can see what's on it with the room lights bright or with a flashlight - so it's not a sleep problem.
So actually the logic board is working fine. It's possibly the reed switch but they usually fail in the open position or that fuse is gone on the logic board or the cable is open/shorted. Did you check that out?
I've decided to mod it and get a MacBook instead.
Which wouldn't work if the logic board was toast which I don't think is the case.
Have you run an external monitor?
I asked about this elsewhere, and was told you'd be the guy to ask about this plan
Yah email me (click on "spudnuty"). If you're tossing the extra parts I could use them in my donation efforts.
    Richard
Basically, I'm planning to put it in the shell of a Mac SE.
    iBook 1.2 GHz G4 Mac OS X (10.4.11)
Is it a 14" or 12"? I use a 14 every day and walk into my office if I want to watch a streaming video (iMac G5).
I'd like to be able to hook it up to the internal screen connector (long shot, yeah, but who knows).
Yah that video cable (LVDS in AppleSpeak) is totally different people have been trying to crack that for years. There was a guy in Green Bay a few years ago. Forget how that came out.
Otherwise, the external VGA video output adapter (and if that's the case, is there some way to get it to mirror to an external larger screen?) would have to do.
