Videos In iPhoto. Why?

Hi. I'd just like to know why digital camera videos end up in iPhoto? Sure, it makes sense, because they come from the same digital camera that you take photos with. However, what use are they in iPhoto? You can't watch them in Front Row, you can't watch them on your iPod, you can't watch them on your Apple TV. It's like they've been forgotten about in the grand scheme of OS X.

Thanks. I know you can drag the video files into iTunes, but this has 2 problems:
- You end up with 2 versions of each video on your hard drive, which isn't very efficient!
- You have to manually copy them over, which can get laborious if you have thousands of videos
It's frustrating because iTunes automatically goes into iPhoto and syncs up the appropriate photos to your iPod and Apple TV. That's all taken care of. So why does it leave out all the videos? Am I the only person in the World that finds this dissapointing?

I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library? I assumed that like  the videos in iPhoto, I would be able to access the videos in Aperture through iMovie. Come on Apple! I am starting to get frustrated with your products here. And this is saying a lot when I have been using and loving apple products for the last 4 years.

Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.
    APPLE. What are you doing?

  • Why are my pics/video in iphoto being moved around?

My iphoto seems to swallow chunks of pics/video and store them in other places, ex. my external hard drive w/o my consent. It was working fine until I installed FCPX, could that have anything to do with it?

No idea - what version of iPhoto?
Why exactly do you think that iPhoto "seems to swallow chuncke of pics/video and store them in other places"?
By default (and extremely strongly recommended) when you import a photo or video into iPhoto it is copies to the iPhoto liberary - it is never moved from the original location (although there is no reason for you to leave it there - it is best to delete it once imported) nor is it ever moved within the iPhoto library unless you do an iPhoto upgrade that re-organizes the library - but since you never directly access your photos or videos within the iPhoto library this has no effect on you - you only access them using the supplied tools (see the user tip on accessing your files) or using iPhoto

  • Why is my video in iPhoto

I have a Iphone C5 and i was filming with the camera and the video is in iphoto. Plus, how do i pause, fast forward and rewind my video in iphoto?

    Hi Roma,
Do you mean why is the video you took with your camera in the Photos app?
Becasue it is a part of the Camera Roll, so it is in the app where the camera roll lives.
You can't "fast forward" or "rewind" per se, but you can use the little slider in the array at the top of the screen to move foward and backward through the video.
    Cheers,

  • Why can't I transfer video from iphoto onto an external HD?

Can anyone tell me why I cannot transfer my iphoto video onto an external hard drive from imovie? Basically I am trying to transfer all my video from imovie onto an external hard drive to clear up space, but I cannot seem to find a way to do the video under iphoto. It let's me transfer all other video, but not the video under iphoto.

Have you tried the Export function in iPhoto? Since there is one with choices including Quicktime, I would guess that it has to be rendered first. So, you could try that and save it to your desktop and then copy it over (or, if available, directly to the external).

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I keep hearing that I can't email videos from iPhoto because they are too big. What I don't understand is that I was able to send videos via email in the past. Why?

I keep hearing that I can't email videos from iphoto because they are too big. What I don't understand is that I have emailed videos via email in the past. Why is that?

    Look at your settings iPhoto>Preferences>Accounts
and make changes here or add your email account if not in the list
One thing to look at for sure is the SMTP sever name, I think by default it fills it in as smtp.me.com  or some such,  which may not be your email outgoing server.

  • Why are videos in iphoto black thumbnails after import?

    Hi,
I had to rebuild my entire iphoto library and start fresh but after i did that a lot of the small thumbnails are black when i view my photos in events.
I can correct that my making one photo in the event the key photo but all my videos in iphoto now have black thumbnails instead of the usual picture preview.
I'm upgrading them all just now to see if that helps but it's taking hours.
    Any ideas anyone?
    J.

Now i just need to mess about in the finder and delete some things and then move some stuff about and that should be that!
Not sure what that is all about but you know that you must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure or con ten of the iPhoto library - there are no user serviceable parts in is - any user activity inside the iPhoto library will corrupt it and cause data loss

  • Can't play videos in iphoto library anymore, why?

I'm running OS 10.6.8 with iPhoto 7.1.5. Nothing has changed with my camera and codecs that the Canon uses. I was previously able to play videos in iphoto. I think quicktime was linked but this is no longer the case. In order to play them I have to export as an original to the desktop and open the file via quicktime. This seems ridiculous since it worked before. What have I done? .....or what has Apple done? Thanks for your help.

    How can I help?
Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance.

  • IMovie Freezes All The Time when I have video clips in my iphoto why ??

I am soooo stressed out I am trying to find a way to keep my iphoto movie clips in iphoto but when I do that I can't open my iMovie it will just freeze and I get the beach ball of death ! Is there a way to fix that other than deleting all my videos from iphoto ? If that's what I have to do what is the point of having iphoto to organize anything or imovie for that matter; if I can't even use it without encountering problems.

    Thanks for the follow up.
Missing in this equation were the version of Premiere Elements that you were using and the computer operating system on which it was running. But...
The deed is done. But.....Until now and after you went ahead and moved to version 12, we now learn what version of Premiere Elements you were using. We still do not know the computer operating system involved.
You just said Premiere Elements 10. Premiere Elements 10 is hit by a serious known display issue if the computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card. In this issue, the only remedy is to roll back the driver version to about May 2013. The description of the problem and how to do the roll back are described in one of the Announcements at the top of this forum. What video card/graphics card does your computer use?
On another front, Adobe will be releasing a new version of Premiere Elements any day now. No one but Adobe knows the feature set for the new version. That type of information is announced at the moment of release of the new version.
So the remedy to the problem that you presented in this thread could have been...
    1. Rolling back the NVIDIA GeForce driver version to about May 2013 if possible (Windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit, may not be possible)
    2. Move to another version of Premiere Elements (which you did)
I offer the above for consideration so that you can review your decisions. We are pleased to learn that Premiere Elements 12/12.1 works for you.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions and ask for clarifications, but remember that the answers are in the details.
    Best wishes,

  • Deleted videos from iphoto but they are still showing up in the finder?

I deleted all of my videos from iPhoto and moved them to an external hard drive because I wanted to free up some space on my MacBook Air.  The files are no longer visible in the iPhoto application, but for some reason, when I look at the storage space on my computer, it is still showing that I have 8GB of movies on my computer.  If I search in the Finder, it is showing that a lot of these videos that I deleted from iPhoto are still in a "Masters" folder in iPhoto.  I am confused, though, because if I open iPhoto, the videos are not in there.  I want these video files to be deleted for good - can I just go in to the "Masters" folder in the Finder and delete them there?  I've read not to delete anything from iPhoto in the Finder, though. So, getting very frustrated because I'm not sure why these files aren't fully deleted off my computer. Any suggestions?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Is there any way to recover deleted video from iPhoto?

I lost all my iPhone videos because iPhoto didn't export them properly. A whole month of video memories of my newborn's life are gone. Why would a program be designed to export photos and not videos if it allowed videos to be imported from a device?? I am beyond devastated. Files should ONLY be allowed to be dragged and dropped instead of having an "export" option. How in the world was I supposed to know my video files would be exported as blank files?? I know I should have checked the backups before deleting the originals from iPhoto, but I figured when a file was exported, it was copied as is to the external HDD. My question is this: is there ANY possible way to recover old deleted videos??

What version of iPhoto and system are you using?
Why would a program be designed to export photos and not videos if it allowed videos to be imported from a device?? I am beyond devastated.
When you import a video iPhoto creates a jpeg preview version of the first frame.  When you export it out of iPhoto you only get the actual video file if you select Kind = Original.  Either of the other two options give you the prieview image file.
If you have access to the library they may still be in there. Create a smart album with the criteria:  Keyword = movie or File Name contains .mov.  That should display all movie files in the library.  Try the export Kind = Original and see if you can retrieve them.

  • Exporting videos from iPhoto

For the life of me, I can't figure out a way to export videos which I imported into iPhoto from my camera. I can export it to my desktop but can't export them in a format that I can then import into Vimeo or other video sharing site.
What the heck does a guy gotta do to share his simple .avi videos with others on the Internet?
I tried exporting it from Quicktime too, but sadly, exporting my own video from Quicktime requires that I have a Pro account. Sad but true.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
To export a video from iPhoto:
Select the video in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. Set the *Kind: to Original*. This will export your video.
can't export them in a format that I can then import into Vimeo or other video sharing site.
Why? What formats do they require? Do the videos require shifting to a new format?
What the heck does a guy gotta do to share his simple .avi videos with others on the Internet?
Who can tell, when you don’t explain where the procedure breaks down for you.
I tried exporting it from Quicktime too, but sadly, exporting my own video from Quicktime requires that I have a Pro account. Sad but true.
Why is that sad? When you export from Quicktime you are shifting formats or otherwise editing the video.

  • Viewing only videos in iPhoto

Is there any way to view only video clips within iPhoto library? Instead of having to search through my library for video clips?

Why not make an Album of them, so they are gathered in the one place? When you import a movie it's automatically assigned a keyword. So
    File -> New Smart Album
    Keyword -> is -> movie

  • I'm new with my Mac. I have downloaded a gopro video to iPhoto and now I would like to burn it to a disk. How do I make this happen? Does it need to run threw iMovie?

Hello,  Im new with Mac. Ive downloaded a GoPro video to iphoto and now I would like to burn it to a disk. What is the best way to go about this? Do I need to do this in imovie?

I assume you want to burn a video DVD that will play in a DVD player on a TV set, correct?
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag  movie file into the open iDVD window for iDVD's Media/Photos pane being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
There are a couple of other video DVD authoring application available from the App Store. They don't have the versatility that iDVD has.  I've not used any of them so can't comment on their effectiveness.  I do, however, believe that there's no app that can do as well as iDVD in creating a prefessional looking video DVD.
