Videos taking up disk space.

I have some tv shows I've bought and their filling up my hard drive. I want to burn them to a dvd so I can get them off my HD. But I can't figure out how to do this. I have already deleted some tv shows because I needed the space and now I can't redownload them without paying for it again. Which in itself is a rip off. Anyways can someone help me? Doing a backup by the way doesn't work either it still leaves all the files on the disk. I also can't selectively backup files its either all or nothing.

Doing a backup by the way doesn't work either it still leaves all the files on the disk.
That's how a backup works, with just about any software. If you want to remove something from your hard drive after backing it up, you do it yourself. Software that will automatically remove a file after backing it up usually refers to that process as "archiving".
I want to burn them to a dvd so I can get them off my HD.
In iTunes, you can use the "Back up to disk" command under the File menu. Then once the backup is completed, you can remove the videos from your drive. Or probably better, do as rcmadiax suggested and back up (or move) your entire iTunes collection to an external drive.

  • Windows Folder taking All Disk Space?

    Hello SharePoint Fam,
I got alert today in CA saying that my APP Server was running low on disk space C drive.  C Drive is 80GB and Windows folder is taking almost 30GB of that data.  C drive only has 10GB of space left.  I know alot of important system files are
in Windows folder, is there anything in this folder I could look into removing?  System Volume Info is 40GB but not sure exactly if i can modify that at all.  Volume Shadow Copy is not enabled at all....Thanks n advance

  • Importing avi video--not enough disk space???

I'm trying to import a 1.5 GB video into imovie and it tells me that there's not enough disk space, even though at the bottom of the window it says I have 5.4 GB available. The video is saved on my hard drive, and I don't have another copy. Can anyone help?

iMovie must convert your file to DV Stream and it is 13 GB's per hour.
You will not be able to import until you free up some hard drive space.

  • Cannot see what is taking up disk space

On my Lenovo 3000 N200 with Vista Home basic, C: (using property) is showing 101G used 4.2 G free, but when I add up the size of the folders under C:, they only add up to 20G.  I understand there is a service partition that is invisible, and this is around 20G.  But where is the other 80G ? Help !
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Use caution with any of these ideas, your system may be set up differently!!
Before you start deleting things, determine what exactly is taking up the space.
    1. Could be Lenovos Rescue and Recovery backup files,
I think these can be deleted through the program. I do not use it,
so can not tell you how.
    2. Or maybe Vistas windows restore files and shadowstorage.
Try disk cleanup, part of vista? Delete restore files, and then create
    a new restore point.
    3. I have used this command from a command prompt window,
    right click, run as administrator. Website Link with explanation;
    vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=4GB
    maxsize can be changed.
    Type  vssadmin /?  for parameters.
    EDIT: Changed the command syntax.

  • Hidden files taking up disk space

My son has been using my wife's computer and has instaled several apps including a screen capture prgram called debut. Now the computer gives a message that it is out of disk space. I set the view options to "calculate all sizes". When I look at the contenst of the user folder, they do not add up to what the finder says is there. The finder says there 92 gigs used, but the contents as show only add up to about 45 gigs. So I'm guessing that one of these apps has installed some sort of "hidden" files. Searching around the community here, I saw it was suggested to use OmniDiskSweeper. When I run that it shows that my "Library" folder inside my wife's "User" folder is about 50 gigs. However, that "Library" folder is not visible in the Finder view. Does anyone know why that would be? Also, having used DiskSweeper to reveal all the files, how do I know what is safe to delete from that "Library" folder?

This is what I do....I open terminal and issue the following commands (you need to be an administrator)..it will take a few minutes to run since it's counting up space
    cd /
    sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g
This gives a listing in GB at your root level
It should look something like this
    MacPro:/ xxxxx$ sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g
    Password:
    1          ./.DocumentRevisions-V100
    1          ./.fseventsd
    2          ./.Spotlight-V100
    0          ./.TemporaryItems
    0          ./.Trashes
    0          ./.vol
    31          ./Applications
    1          ./bin
    0          ./cores
    1          ./dev
    1          ./home
    5          ./Library
    1          ./net
    0          ./Network
    0          ./opt
    1          ./private
    1          ./sbin
    4          ./System
    44          ./Users
    1          ./usr
    1          ./Volumes
    85          .
    85          total
I'm using 31GB in applications and 44GB in users.  That's the majority.  If you see big numbers in ./Volumes for example, that is the sign of a failed TM restore, etc...
Now I cd into Users (cd Users) and rerun the same command
    MacPro:Users xxxxx$ sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g
    1          ./bootadmin
    44          ./xxxxx
    1          ./Shared
    44          .
    44          total
You can see that I'm using all the 44GB, not the user bootadmin, not shared
Now if I cd into xxxxx and rerun the command I get this
    MacPro:~ xxxxx$ sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g
    1          ./.cups
    1          ./.dropbox
    1          ./.dvdcss
    0          ./.idm
    1          ./.ssh
    0          ./.Trash
    1          ./Applications
    1          ./Desktop
    10          ./Documents
    1          ./Downloads
    1          ./Dropbox
    21          ./Library
    1          ./Movies
    1          ./Music
    12          ./Pictures
    1          ./Public
    0          ./Sites
    44          .
    44          total
So I have 10GB of documents, 21GB in my Library, 12GB of photos
One more time in Library (cd ~/Library)
    (truncated for brevity)
I have 7GB of application support and 12GB of mail
So with simple commands I can trackdown strageness with storage.  You can't know what to delete but you can ask here "why is this folder using so much space?"  Your son may have his own account and is using 40GB of space now.  My own son has downloaded several games on his mac where each one is 15GB.

  • Sparsebundle taking up disk space

Hi, I've been wondering what happened to my hard drive, and ran a scan of it.
I found out there's a sparsebundle named ChiBook.sparsebundle, located at /Users/.ChiBook, that's taking up around 80gb of the 160gb that I'm suppose to have.
Is it safe to delete it? If not, how do I recover that 80gb?
    Thanks!

Doing a search on Sparsebundle turns up that it's associated with Time Machine. If your MacBook is named Chibook you may have created a back-up of your hard derive on your internal hard drive rather than an external hard drive. Open the Chibook.Sparsebundle and see if it's a copy of your hard drive. If it is then go to System Preferences>Time Machine and turn off the Time Machine. Then delete the Chibook.Sparsebundle

  • Re-capture video to save disk space

I have logged 5 clips, each about 10 min. long.
After editing the clips, I only use about 2 min from each clip.
How do I re-capture, so that I only have the used footage on my disk?
Batch capture takes the whole clip, which I don't want.

    use Media Manager
select the sequence and choose File > Media Manager
then in the MM window choose Media : Copy
check the "Delete unused media from duplicated items" checkbox
if wanted, check the "Use Handles" checkbox and specify the handle length
check the "Duplicate items and place in a new project
click the Browse button and specify a directory to save the new media
    press OK
no recapture necessary, it will create new media from the existing media
check the result of the process very carefully, make sure it is exactly as you expected before you get rid of the orignal media

How to know the disk space -(filled and not filled) in Macbook pro? what is the easiest way to know about it? how can i know a % of disk space that is filled in my mac book pro (2012 model MD101)

    Hi ...
What's taking up disk space >  OSX Tips The Storage Display
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • What's taking up my disk space?

I have an iMac with a 500-gig drive. All my photos and videos are on an external drive. According to "info" the internal drive has 384Mb of disk space left! For the life of me I can't find what is taking up all the disk space and it's driving me crazy. Any way to find what directory, or directories are chewing up all the disk space? I have OS X 10.6.8.

no, it works in Snow Leopard.  I used Snow Leopard before I installed Lion.  Being new to mac, you will find these links helpful: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343, http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/, http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/

  • My Mac is showing that I am out of disk space.  It says I have 175 MB of videos.  I cannot find any videos in Itunes, Imovie or IPicture.  What gives?

My Mac is showing that I am out of disk space.  It says I have 175 MB of videos.  I cannot find any videos in Itunes, Imovie or IPicture.  What gives?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How do I find videos taking up space on iPhone5?

My storage bar shows that I have over 2 GB in videos taking up space on my iPhone5.  When I hover over the video part, it tells me how much is taken up and that there are "14 items" of video on my iPhone.
However, I have no videos showing when I open the Video app, I have no videos checked in iTunesU, Podcasts or TV shows to sync.  I mostly have a couple of audio podcasts syncing and a bunch of music and audiobooks.
I don't believe I've ever used my camera for video, and looking through my camera roll, I don't see anything that might indicate that anything is a video.
Scrolling through what's "On This iPhone" shows only audio files except where some labels for a file kind runs off the field and I can't widen the field to see what they say beyond "Protected AAC..."
One unusual thing is that when I do check "Sync Podcasts", the space usage shoots way up by several GB, even if there are no Podcasts checked to sync.  If I do check some podcasts, their space usage is added to the overshoot
How can I track down what these 14 video files are?

    Hi Gibby,
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/download/
And if needed, you can use Terminal to run it in admin mode to see files/folders your user can't see...

  • What is the "Other" taking up all my iPod disk space?

I have the 80GB Video iPod. I thought I had plenty of free space judging just by how little room the music and videos were taking up, but then I noticed that a large percentage of the remaining space was actually marked as "other" on the colored bar in iTunes rather than "Free Space". But I have no idea what all that "Other" is. I'm talking about 35.7GB of "Other", while my 3.3days of Audio and 17.5 hours of video is taking up less than half of that.
I go through the different tabs in iTunes to see what's on my iPod, but it seems like it would all fall under either music or video (I had about 20 photos, but I stopped synching those up until I solve this mystery). What on earth could the "Other" be? As far as I know, that's all I've loaded on this thing is music and videos. I want to reclaim that space!

I have the same issue. I know a restore will fix it, but I want to know what is actually taking up that space and why.
Any ideas why gigs of space are taken up by "other", gigs of space which could be used for media?
Apple, any answers or a fix here?

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
    Thanks for any info!
