Videos too dark

When I play videos (either DVDs or iTunes shows) on my iMac, the brightness is too low. I have adjusted my monitor brightness to full, but still have a hard time watching some shows on the iMac. Where can I find brightness, contrast, saturation settings for Front Row?

since front row just hijacks dvd player and such you should be able to change it in dvd player's preferances. are the tv shows from the itunes music store?

IPhone 6 video too dark

the video on iPhone 6 is far too dark. Compared to photo it's Much darker. Can't make out much in videos. Is it fixable?!

IMovie to iDVD--Video too dark, sound too loud--Help!

I created three iMovie projects for my son's swim team, then made a DVD using iDVD. It was fine when viewed in iDVD's preview, but when burned to the DVD-R the video was too dark and the sound was way too loud. This is footage taken on a Sony digital camcorder (DCR-TRV11).
I did the iDVD project by starting from scratch from within iDVD, then dragging the iMovie pieces and still images into the iDVD project. The iMovie pieces were prepared by using Share to make them into "full quality" .dv movies.
When I play the finished DVD on my iMac, there are no unusual problems with the video or audio. It looks and sounds like it did when played from the digital camcirder. But when played on both of my standalone DVD players + TVs, the video is too dark and the audio is much too loud.
Any idea why this is, and to fix it? I don't find a way to reduce the audio volume in iMovie. Maybe there is a workaround using the Relative Volume feature, but all my clips have a similar sound level. Any help will be appreciated.

I suspect what you are seening is a major difference in brightness/contrast between your computer monitior and your TV set (and in fact you admit this: "When I play the finished DVD on my iMac, there are no unusual problems with the video or audio. But when played on both of my standalone DVD players + TVs, the video is too dark and the audio is much too loud.") so you aren't seeing an iDVD problem.

Video too dark

I downloaded a few tv shows and movies and all seem too dark, especially the black & white movies. I know its not just the monitor because the playback is the same on all monitors and on my HDTV monitor when played back through AppleTV. Interestingly, the small "Now Playing" frame in the lower left of iTunes shows the videos with what seems to be the correct brightness and contrast. I also opened the b&w movie in Quicktime and adjusted the brightness and contrast and the movie looked fine. Any suggestions?

Two points:
a. You shouldn't judge the quality of Your movie on Your Mac screen. It's just
a qualified approximation. I have to and parallell with connected a small TV to
the analog out on my Camera. In iMovie I've selected play back via Camera.
Now I can see what iMovie does with my material on the TV and that's the
final result quality.
b. Yes there are a tool for brightness and contrast in iMovie under Effect - tool
but it is very crude and nearly unusable.
If You have or have a friend that have - FinalCut Express or pro - the tool to
alter the picture quality is greatly more advanced. You could in such case
Capture Your clips there and fix the apperance and save back to a new tape
in Your Camera to cont. working from this.

Video too dark on batch capture

I have a Canopus ACVC110 converter for importing analog video sources that's hooked into one of my firewire ports. When I go to log and caputure my DVD player menu (ie. the one that says "JVC") looks fine in the preview window. However, once I play the DVD, the video looks too dark. What can I adjust so that the video I'm importing doesn't get captured at such a low video level? Thanks.

There is a good chance the DVD you are copying has some form of macrovision copyright protection. This would explain why the DVD appears really dark when you try to capture it using the ACVC110.
Some Canopus converters have undocumented ways to bypass macrovision, but your model doesn't offer that.
If you are legally copying a DVD, you may have to use another method, like routing it through a Time Base Corrector which will regenerate the video stream or transfering it digitally using a program like mpeg streamclip.

Also manual exposure control doesn't work for me when in video mode, when i move those on screen controls nothing changes whereas when i move them in photo mode pictures become either brighter or darker.

Snow leopard video too dark

i just installed snow leopard and my ichat video is really dark, people can barely see me now. anyone else have this problem? or know how to fix it?

Help please! Video too dark to review and make clips!

Bought a new imac G5 for video editing as this was recommended by the mac store. Just captured my first short film, filmed on panasonic dvx 100B in 24pA. Not only are the day scenes fuzzy, but the night scenes are black and I can't see them to even make clips and edit! The tutorial video clips come out perfectly.
The night scenes are very clear and lighted on my camera lcd.
I tried changing video settings to high, but still can't view.
Please tell me I don't need an external monitor just for rough edititing and there is something I can do about this.
(Wondering why I spent all this $ on a new and larger monitor if I can't even use it!)
Could it be the RAM? I've got 512, or something with the 24 frame rate? It's set on 23.98 as recommended for 24p advanced.

Read through these links. They describe how to calibrate a NTSC monitor. Don't worry about color yet, concentrate on the part about setting up the brightness and contrast levels first.

Check into Graeme Nattress's G TAKE filter with the Blue channel engaged. It mimics what a blue gun setting on a pro monitor would do.
Again, unless the monitor is calibrated somewhat, the true story is not yet known.

Videos look dark displayed using projector, but OK in my laptop?

this one seems to be a common problem. I have been lecturing in several medical meetings and when colleagues show embedded videos in their presentations, they look very dark. Sometimes they are so dark that miss completely the point. I have had the same problem, to the point where I have had to skip a slide with video because it is so dark that it cannot be seen on the main projector screen. The curious thing is that in my laptop screen they look fine when I am presenting... but very dark when they are projected. Any ideas to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

I don't have the same problem (i.e. videos too dark) but I'll bet it's the same solution. My problem was that the Keynote presentation on the LCD were way too dark. Funny thing was that if I opened up the systems preferences dialog box, they looked fine. Hummm.
Turns out that it was an issue with a change in the latest OS and how apple now handles the gamma setting in external displays. I don't recall all the details but Snow Leopard seems to use the new standard gamma of 2.2, making output too dark. The output gamma should be closer to 1.8.
To fix this, you need to adjust the color profile for the LCD projector that you are using.
To fix a projector, the projector must be plugged in and turned on to do this.
If you go to System Preferences, Displays and the Color option. You'll see a list of Display Profiles. There will be a dialog box on both the computer screen and the projector screen. To get them both on the computer screen to make editing a little easier you can click Gather Windows at the bottom of the dialog box on the computer.
I found it easier to just Calibrate the monitor and same a new profile - you can also uncheck the Show profiles for this display only and pick another profile like one of the sRGB profiles. To calibrate, click the Calibrate button (be sure you do it on the dialog for the LCD projector) I'd click Expert Mode - this will give you more options when adjusting the Gamma. Run through the Calibration routine making sure that you select a Gamma that is closer to 1.8 instead of the 2.2.
At the end, same the profile and then everything on the external display should look much better.
When researching my issue, there seemed to be consensus that using a digital interface the projector was better than the normal VGA cable. Didn't have a cable to try that.
Once you do this, the machine should always recognize the projector and behave properly. Seems a pain to have to do this but I didn't find any other alternative. The good thing is that I have not had to do this on every projector that I use. I have my own projector that has always worked properly.
I teach at a university where the rooms have mounted projectors - some work with no change, others I have to calibrate...
Try it out, hope it helps...

MacBook Pro to TV, Video Output Too Dark

I have an 2010 model 15" MacBook Pro i5.

Using this in conjunction with an Apple Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter and a standard RCA video cable, I am able to connect my MacBook to my TV so I can stream video from sites like Hulu.
My TV is a Sanyo flat screen CRT that's, probably, 6-7 years old (exact model probably isn't important).
I have no issues with the quality of the video output I'm getting (i.e. resolution, color). The issue I'm having is that the video is too dark. The video looks great on my MacBook screen, but the TV display is too dark. I have tried playing with the settings on the TV and on the converter (through which I can adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, and sharpness) and I can't, for the life of me, get the output to my TV brightened up to an acceptable level.
I have tried to use the display calibration tool in the Mac's display preferences and that didn't seem to help (I'll admit that I don't think I'm doing it correctly).
Can anyone suggest some steps that I might try in order to improve my video output?

Sorry for the late answer. I live in Europe, so that's why I was asleep ;-)
Basically the command tells your computer to unhide everything on your Desktop, so if you don't have a Desktop, something is definitely wrong.
My guess is that there's something wrong with your account on that computer. You can check that by creating a new account in System Preferences (click on Accounts, click the lock in the bottom-left corner and then click the "+" button just above).
Then try mounting "some" media and see if it appears on the new user's Desktop. If not, I would highly recommend to reinstall Mac OS X.

Streaming Video, iTunes rentals are too dark. Help!

Using a 2013 Macbook Air, pretty much fully loaded.
I'm noticing that movies purchased on iTunes, as well as Handbrake rips of my own DVDS, and streaming through both Amazon Prime and Netflix, using MS Silverlight and Quicktime... all videos are too dark. Or rather, the shadows, and blacks are all too dark. I have worked with display calibration and am convinced that calibration is not the real issue here. While using my photo editing software, Lightroom 3, there are no such problems. It is only the video playback.
Is anyone else having the same issue? I had a 2012 MB Air which didn't seem to have this problem as badly as this one.

I have gone through calibration. Please note that other applications, such as Lightroom appear as they should. I also have a spyder, and though I haven't calibrated this monitor, the fact that non-video applications are appearing as they should tells me that the problem is probably with the application running the video playback, or something do to with the video processor. Also note that the problem occurs with both Amazon streaming, Netflix, and videos ripped with Handbrake, and that it occurs with MS Silverlight, Quicktime and with VLC player.
I read some discussion streams from 2012 with the same problem, and calibration was not the issue. I have tried every built in display profile, manually gone through calibration in "expert" mode, etc... I just don't think this is the real issue. Nor does it appear to be a hardware issue. At least not the monitor. Other applications are working just fine.

Does AMC adjust so YouTube/Vimeo videos are not too dark

Hi, been having problems with videoes coming out too dark in YouTube. This seems to be a problem lots of people are having. Just to clarify I mean the video is a lot darker on youtube/vimeo than if played in something like VLC on the same monitor.
Was wondering if ABC brigtened up to image to compensate for this?

Also: In the Multiplexer tab check that Stream Compatibility is set to Standard. It defaults to iPod.
Try rendering a short test clip using the two settings and let me know how they look in YouTube. If neither file works, please import to your NLE and post a screen capture of the same frame from the ProRes, AME H.264, and transcoded YouTube files. You can download the files from the Video Manager page; the option is listed near the bottom of the pulldown menu that starts with "Edit".
EDIT: Added note regarding multiplexer stream compatibility.

Captured video-material appears far too dark

I have a great problem (being under time-pressure with a project): video-material, taken with a canon HV30, that looks all right on the camera-screen, appears FAR TOO DARK (not usable), after beeing captured. the problem does not seem to be a premiere-problem (I have CS3), since windows movie maker produces the same fault. it is neither a pc-screen-calibration or -regulation-problem, since the same material played onto the same screen by another pc, that displays everthing else perfectly, is also too dark. the answer must be between the cam-corder and the capturing software? does someone have a clue? (the problem seems to be not only mine if you check via google... and the solution seems not to be at hand...)
I'm working with DV-widescreen(16:9)-PAL-material converting it with 16-bit sound and 48 kHz.

I will do that just for curiosity. but then I would have to know how the waveform-scopes should ideally look like? where can I find model-scopes? (and, what's more, the camera "gave up its spirit", as we say in german: can't be switched on any more - brand new... so I'll have to get it fixed...)
but: it seems to me, that your path-finding leads in the wrong direction... see: the camera records pictures digitally on a tape. from the tape it is able to read the data again out onto a screen - and fine! now: you should be able to reproduce that outside the camera - and not blame it somehow...
others seem to have the same problem with different cameras and different systems-cominations (operating system, graphic cards...). so it can't be just my camera. the problem is not so easy...
the guy here - http://forum.videohelp.com/topic281706.html - seems to aim in the right direction (imho): he touches the point of the colour-spaces used! he says inside the camcorder IRE 0.0 / 16-235 color space is used. right? well: outside the cam on a computer-screen RGB or sRGB is used, right? so some transformation has to happen - or may be, it is not done - with the bad result, we have...
now the chap there speaks about the possibly wrong codecs. a codec however has to do with compression/decompression. but - they say - the capturing via firewire is just the unaltered transmission of data, and .avi (the resulting format) is compression-free! so the problem is not a codec-problem. but how's the software called that changes the color-spaces or should change them???
what astonished me very much is to see that, when I change the screen-settings for color/luminance with my nvidia-graphics-card, then everything on the screen changes exept! the to video-images in the two screens (source, program) in premiere... so premiere seems to use its own screen-controle here!
and why actually can't I choose somewhere which the output-conditions for and after the capturing shall be, e.g. the clip-format (.avi, .mov etc.) and - may be! - the color-space! I can just say "DV 25i PAL max. bit-depth" and, under device(=cam)-controle, brand and type of device (and again PAL). now I can choose "canon" but not "HV30" (not contained in the list) - just "standard" instead. but that raises the question: what colour-space are the various cameras using and sending??
now if I check the supported camera-brands and -types online on the adobe-website (http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/dvhdwrdb.html) I can't find canon's HV30 (just the semi-pro-models, for which "conditional support" is promised... but problems seem to lay elsewhere).
on the website, where you can check the compatibility of your cam with premiere, adobe boasts its "Preconfigured solutions
Certified Adobe OpenHD configurations (that) help ensure compatibility between hardware and software components." if you click on the linked text some general boasting and buy exhortations about the "creative suite" come up - no precise information...
should this well known and ill suffered compatibility problem not be handled more clearly and competently?
please help me finding the solution, which is: to interprete the recorded data on the tape, that get transferred via capturing, like the camera does!

" you see: two different color spaces in TV and CAPTURE SYSTEMS! is premiere not a capture system?? and what do the graphics-devices underway between the camera and premiere??

Video Playback general too dark on the Z10

Maybe, if I would sit in a completely dark room, it might look good, but under normal conditions if you playback a video stream on the Z10, the picture is too dark. Hard to watch if it is not a news broadcast. Anything like a movie is IMHO not unusable. Even, with the backlit set to 100%
I compared this to a 9700, same stream, backlit set to 10%. and, this is (besides the small screen of the 9700) a lot better.

I do have mine set at 100 % as well. It is ok for everything including youtube videos. I am inside all day but I could see there being an issue in the sun.
