Vie pane instead of opening message

My email has uddenly started opening with a single click on the message title, whereas previosuly it would simply display in the View Pane, and would only open with a double click. I can't find where these options are set.

Dominic, at the bottom center of your Mail window there is a small "dimple", double-click on it.

  • How do I set TB's default startup view to show e-mail message list instead of only the latest opened message?

    Hi, I just now installed Thunderbird 24.3 and am using Thunderbird for the first time ever. From having had Outlook Express before, I am used to the app opening to my full list of mail boxes (Inbox, Sent, Car, Cat, etc.) upon clicking the app's program icon. In TB, however, I am instead finding that TB opens showing the *latest e-mail message I had opened* -- no list of mail boxes. I end up having to click the upper left arrow in TB numerous times until I can no longer click leftward any more, at which point the tab appears that names the latest e-mail message that I had opened previously, at which time I can then *click* on that tab, which magically opens the list of my e-mail boxes that I wanted to show in the first place. I would like avoiding this rigamarole in the future. Thanks for any insights.

    Thanks so much for your speedy, thorough, and detailed reply. I have done as you suggested, deciding to go with the "open message in existing window" option. How great is that! One reason I chose to go with Thunderbird when I changed from an XP PC to Windows 7 (besides TB being free) was the clearly written support and easy forum posting method I saw online. This continues to hold true -- Still so glad I chose Thunderbird! Thanks again.

    Same here.
    This was a big problem when switching from 10.7 to 10.8 and now it seems te be back, bigger than ever when going to 10.9.
    All icloud related programs are effected: ical, icloud, adressbook, mail.
    Systemprefereces goes easily to 100% cpu load and things like com.apple.icloud or com.apple.internetaccounts turn not responding.
    At this moment it does not crash on my imac 2012. It still crashes om the imac 2009 and macbook 2009.
    Someone mentioned to use keychain repair but that must be done in English mode!. It crashed in dutch mode.
    I have not found a overall solution yet.
    Will keep on looking or go back to good old 10.8.5.

    Anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this?
    I did have iChat in a subdirectory within applications, but the install blew it away. Some arcane .plist somewhere?
    Oh, also I had system prefs in "Utilities" directory and it did not get blown away by the new install. Instead, it remained behind and I had to remove it as root user, leaving the correct system prefs in "Applications."
    MacBook Pro 2008; 6 gb ram; hybrid SSD/SATA drive; OS X 10.8. Can't think of anything else to include that might be relevant. Ask if I forgot something, and I'll post it.

    @Ralph       Thanks. Here's how I proceeded with your suggestions.
    Try moving these as well.
    Indeed, there were some files as you described in the "By Host" directory. I removed those, trashing them, and, for good measure re-examined the parent directory (Library), removing any (newly created for the most part) files matching the .plist list provided in your post.
    IF you are really sure the com.apple.ichat.plist one is not there you need to check if you have Permissions to Write to the Preferences folder.
    Hmm. Perhaps I could've been clearer in my post: the com.apple.ichat.plist was the only one of those files you specified that actually was in the prefs directory. Nonetheless I carried out your instructions to check for ownership and determined that, indeed, the ownership of the Preferences directory was corrrectly ascribed to the user from which I checked this-- my main user account (same that is having difficulty with starting Messages, to be perfectly clear).
    The plot, though 'twas not thick enough, yet thickens more:
    By chance I opened FaceTime, which I don't often use on my laptop, and attempted to sign in. The app opened successfully, but when I filled in my user name and submitted, it failed to connect to Apple. I went to Preferences and tossed out all the FaceTime .plists. (including one in the By Host directory).
    This didn't help. I tried filling in my AppleID user data to "open a new account." FaceTime immediately connected and told me that a user with that email already exists, would I like to use this information to log in. "Yes," I eagerly replied.
    FaceTime switched back to the login screen with the AppleID and password pre-filled, but when I submitted the form, it again failed to log in, after some considerable time, it returned the error you see to the left.
    Also relevant are the facts that I checked the Firewall setting (on) and created rules in Little Snitch to allow both FaceTime and Messages both incoming and outgoing connections.
    And so, despite our commendable collective efforts, we've not yet prevailed. Since the purchase of Mountain Lion was recent, perhaps it is getting to be time to give Apple a call and see if, based on that purchase, they are willing to speak with me and try and troubleshoot the situation.
    Thanks again for your perseverance and help. I remain open to suggestions, should any further thoughts occur to you.
    Best regards,

  • How do I get my computer to start opening up files instead of opening a pop up window rather than the file?

    My computer has started opening up pop up windows that say, "Step 1: Select File, Information Gathered Successfully, Step 2: Click Show Information Button", instead of opening the file I click on. This informaion windown has generated another pop up window that suggests I visit the iTunes store for an app that will open the file. Twice I have purchased apps that the iTunes store said would open the file. Twice the apps have made no difference at all. The apps did not open the file. Even more frustrating than being sold apps that don't work is that the files I'm trying to open are textedit files created with the software on the very computer that is now refusing to open them.
    How do I get beyond the pop-ups and open the files I created?
    Is it possible to return the apps that iTunes said would work, but did not?

  • NLS:4: Cannot open message catalog TMADMIN_CAT,  Solaris Container

    Hello,
    Can someone please help me ?
    I have used Tuxedo 8 for many years on Solaris 8 servers, however we have now ported our installation to a Solaris 8 container on a Solaris 10 server. The server was ported using a flar image from the source server onto the new zone (or container). Tuxedo works absolutely fine in the container and the application appears to run as expected until I try using tmadmin or qmadmin on the command line and run a command in the shell and the following message appears for tmadmin, qmadmin message is similar.
    NLS:4: Cannot open message catalog TMADMIN_CAT, set 1, num 111; check TUXDIR=/opt/apps/tuxedo/8.0, LANG=C
    tmadmin/qmadmin performs the function but appears to be unable to open it's message catalog in $TUXDIR/locale/C
    The mesasage catalog exists in $TUXDIR/locale/C and chksum's identical to source server.
    I have manually re-installed the Tuxedo software in the container with no effect
    I have tried installing Tuxedo in a different directory
    I have tried setting NLSPATH=$TUXDIR/locale/C in the environent with no effect
    The tuxedo application works fine with no similar messages in the ULOG from the running application, it is just tmadmin and qmadmin on the command line, using the same user as runs the application
    localel settings are identical to original source server and :
    localeLANG=
    LC_CTYPE="C"
    LC_NUMERIC="C"
    LC_TIME="C"
    LC_COLLATE="C"
    LC_MONETARY="C"
    LC_MESSAGES="C"
    LC_ALL=
    If i set $LANG = C and run tmadmin and run a command I get the following message instead
    NLS:6: Message not found, catalog TMADMIN_CAT, set 1, num 1136
    Which implies it can see the catalog but cannot open it
    Tuxedo version is 8.0 Rolling patch 222
    Can anyone help? i would be very grateful
    Thanks
    Adam

    I have now worked arround this by re-generating the message catalogs from the catalog text files
    cd $TUXDIR/locale/C
    gencat TMADMIN_CAT TMADMIN.text
    gencat Q_CAT Q.text
    tmadmin and qmadmin now display the output ok, It kind of makes sense since the catalogs are generated in the new environment, but a full install still did not work.
    The new catalogs are identical to the old catalogs and cksum identically, but they work. Still scratching my head over this one, but at least we can move forward now.

  • Safari will not download, instead it opens a blank page

    Whenever I try to download a file, Safari will not trigger a download. Instead, it opens up a blank grey page. The full download address appears in the address bar, with the file name I'm trying to download at the end ( like.... http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/11.1.102.55/install_flash_p layer_osx.dmg )
    but the download never triggers. My primary Browser is Safari Version 5.0.5 (6533.21.1), but I have also tried to download using Firefox 3.6.3. which also never triggers. I'm running OS 10.6.8 on a late 2008 MBP.
    Normally, I can use the "Download linked File" function, but occasionally a website will only let me download a .html, or .php file instead. At the moment, I am trying to download the most recent Adobe Flash Player update, but its being a right mare!!! Hope someone can help me please!!

    Your Safari version is outdated (because you moved it) and probably incompatible with your Mac OS version. However, that doesn't explain the problem with Firefox.
    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, monitor, and Ethernet, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account that has the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, perhaps including wireless networking on certain Macs. If you usually connect to the Internet via WiFi, and it doesn’t wohrk in safe mode, connect using an Ethernet cable. If you can’t do that, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and perform a safe login, as follows: Enter your credentials at the login screen, then hold down the shift key and click the “Log in” button. Keep holding the key until the menu bar appears. In this mode, your login items, among other things, won’t load.
    In safe mode, test again. Same problem(s) now?
    After testing, reboot (if you booted in safe mode) or log out/log in (if you performed a safe login) as usual.

  • I read the info on TBird opening messages in tabs. I set it to open in main window, but it hasn't changed. Is there another solution?

    I could not understand the info on the action of tabs. I followed instructions to set "open in existing window" but messages still show up in tabs along the top. I have trouble finding my inbox. Thank you, Martha

    If you select Open in an Existing Message window, the first message that you double click to open will always open an new window. If you leave that window open and double click a second message it will open the new message in the existing message window.
    If you select Open in a New Window, every message that you double click will open a new window. If you do not close the windows after reading the messages you will be right where you are when you neglect to close the tab after reading the messages. You will have every message that you have read open in a tab and the Inbox tab gets pushed off the screen.
    '''Close the tab or window after reading the message.'''
    If you have lots of tabs open you can '''right click''' one of them and select '''Close Other Tabs''' and then use the x on the last tab to close it.
    This will also close the tab with the Lightning calendar in it so you will need to reopen that.
    Have you tried using the Message Pane to read the messages and not open them at all? F8 will toggle the Message Pane on and off.

  • Links are downloaded to desktop instead of opened

    Sometimes when I click on a link, it downloads the target (even html pages) to my desktop instead of opening them. Once this starts, it doesn't stop. I don't know why or how to avoid it. Am I doing something wrong?
    Also sometimes web pages open in new tabs for no reason I can discern. Am I doing something unintentially?
    Laura

    Hi Laura
    sometimes this is because the website serves up the linked-to item with an incorrect 'id tag', as it were....making safari think it's a different format to what it really is. They're relatively rare though.
    So Once this starts, it doesn't stop seems like something more than that - I take it you find that even known-good pages are affected?
    Does it stop on it's own accord - or when you quit/restart safari?
    Have you tried Safari-Reset Safari? (note the warning message you'll see)
    If you're comfortable using Finder..... try:
    Quit safari & use Finder to trash the file com.apple.safari.plist which you'll find in /home/library/preferences/. Then start safari again.
    Still the same? I'd consider updating the OS, following the advice Here . I remember that the problem was worse in 10.4.3 or 10.4.4 & one of the updates helped. ( not sure exactly which one, sorry)
    I could go on - but it'd be good if you have some example webpages that always cause this so we could check'em out & hopefully offer more specific advice.

  • NLS:4: Cannot open message catalog LIBTUX_CAT, Linux

    Howdy all,
    This problem has been encountered many times before. The general answer
    is to make sure your LANG environment variable is set correctly. But
    that is not my problem in thise case.
    My problem stems from the fact that the messages catalogs in Tuxedo 8
    for Linux are compiled with a Tuxedo version of the gencat program.
    This Tuxedo/gencat is different than the Linux/gencat. Consequently if
    I link another package (Apache/PHP) together with Tuxedo, I get
    conflicts during execution. Also, Tuxedo has its own catopen() and
    catgets() functions inside libengine that are different than Linux
    supplied versions in libc. The Apache/PHP code uses the libc/catopen()
    function and fails to opent he Tuxedo catalogs because their format is
    incompatible. So, I recompiled the Tuxedo catalogs (thanks BEA for
    including the source text files) with the Linux/gencat. Now the Tuxedo
    catalogs are successfully opened by Apache/PHP and useful error messages
    are generated.
    Now the downside. When running Tuxedo programs, i.e. tmboot and
    tmshutdown, Tuxedo uses its own catopen() function. The result is that
    it cannot read the catalogs and generates the cannot open message.
    The ultimate solution to my problem, of course is to have Tuxedo 8
    compiled with the Linux gencat instead of the Tuxedo/gencat, and
    released as a patch, point, or major release. But I also assume there
    is some engineering reason why a different gencat and catopen() were
    included in the first place. So any information on this point would be
    appreciated.
    Also, ontroling the order of the libraries accessed through
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH or ld.so.conf doesn't help. libengine is accessed
    before anything in libc, and then mmaped for quick resolution of links.
    Consequently, the Tuxedo/catopen() is always found first.
    So, does any one have any ideas? Is there a way I can remove the
    catopen() and catgets() from libengine?
    TIA.

    I guess a potential hack to get this working, and not requiring product porting
    changes would be to have 2 different sets of catalogues, and 2 different NLSPATH
    settings, one for Tuxedo binaries, and one for your own.
    Have you tried that?

    Peter.

  • Mail keeps attaching full directory instead of opening it

    Hi
    I am using Lion, but it was present under previous systems. At some time, when I want to attach a file to a message, and when browsing through directories, Mail attaches a full directory instead of opening it to complete the search.
    The problem seems to be quite random, and I suspect that rebooting is more or less the only way to put things back to normal.
    The problem with a random problem is that it is extremely difficult to track...
    I suspect this is a very deep system problem, maybe linked to click / double click procedure, because I have been having it since a very long time now, maybe since Leopard, I don't remember because it happens rarely, once in a while (maybe twice a year) ; you do notice it when it happens, but you don't remember what were the conditions (system, third party software, etc) when it happens.
    I have taken the habit to browse through my directories using 'column' view, so I never double click to open directories and I can finally get to the file I seek and then I double-click on it to attach it to the message.

    Our httpd.conf file has DefaultType text/plain

  • Cannot open message catalog when invoked through JNI

    Hello there.
    I'm having the following problem:
    I've coded a simple workstation tuxedo client (tuxedo version 9.1) that uses a couple of services. When I compile it as an executable and run it everything works fine, with no issues. However, when compiled as a dynamic library and invoked from JAVA via JNI, all functionalities operate correctly (the client connects to the server and invokes the services without a hitch), except that in the event of an error, when I invoke the function tpstrerror(), the following error is returned instead of the proper error description:
    NLS:4: Cannot open message catalog LIBWSC_CAT, set 1, num 1142; check TUXDIR=/home/adrian/bea/tuxedo9.1, LANG=C
    I've checked and re-checked the environment variables. I now include the values for those I think could be relevant to the issue, printed in the C code, obtained with the getenv() function.
    These are the values printed when run as an executable:
    TUXDIR=/home/adrian/bea/tuxedo9.1
    LANG=en_US.UTF-8
    PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games:/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_06/bin:/home/adrian/bea/tuxedo9.1/bin
    NLSPATH=/home/adrian/bea/tuxedo9.1/locale/C
    And these when run as a dynamic library invoked from Java code:
    TUXDIR=/home/adrian/bea/tuxedo9.1
    LANG=en_US.UTF-8
    PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games:/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_06/bin:/home/adrian/bea/tuxedo9.1/bin
    NLSPATH=/home/adrian/bea/tuxedo9.1/locale/C:/usr/dt/lib/nls/msg/%L/%N.cat
    The only difference is marked in bold, but I don't think it matters much (don't know what is appending that extra value to the variable though).
    I've tried setting LANG=C and NLSPATH=/home/adrian/bea/tuxedo9.1/, with no luck. Is there maybe a native library that has to be included in order to open the message catalogs that is not in TUXDIR/lib?
    I'd highly appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction here.
    Thank you in advance for taking the time to read the post.
    Regards.
