View burning speed in Disk Utility

Is it possible to view the current burning speed in either disk utility or in the finder while burning a disk? I suspect that my external DVD burner is running out of buffer and is reducing the burn speed because it sounds like it slows down. But I would like to see the speed as it burns to confirm whether it ever pauses altogether (as a result of buffer underrun protection).
Ideally I would like to be able to see how full the drive buffer is as well. As far as I know, Dragon Burn is the only mac software that shows the buffer status and Toast is the only software that shows the current burning speed.
But I would like to be able to use these features without buying software like toast.
Does anyone know of a way of viewing the current drive burn speed and/or buffer status?

You could try a program like http://download.cnet.com/Burn/3000-2646_4-96476.html?tag=mncol;1 (it's free). Other than that, I don't think there are other options with Disk Utility.

  • Changing Burning speed in Disk Utility

I am currently using Mac OS 10.4.11 and having problems burning cd/dvd due to medium write error. I would like to slow the burning speed down in disk utility, but it won't let me change the burning speed from 4x. All of my drive permissions are repaired, and the cd-rw's are not bad, itunes will burn them at 1x. Any solutions on how to change the burning speed?

No help I'm afraid, but I've been having the same problem. Will post if I find anything.

  • Cannot Set Burn Speed in Disk Utility

    Hi all,
It's been so long since I posted a question (years), I had to redo my settings and start over! Anyway I plan to make multiple DVDs from an FCE project of my daughters soccer season. I've done this in the past and make about 20 per season, but had trouble making then all work using iDVD'06. (Made alot of coasters.) I use Maxell or Verbatim DVD-R both at 16X. Then I was reading here about making it a disk image and then burning it at 4x with Disk Utility. I tried a test of an existing disk image file I made, but the speed option is 'grayed out' for some reason. Not sure why it is not selectable. I did the following:
    1. Opened Disk Utility
    2. Clicked on the .img or .dmg file
    3. Clicked the Burn icon
    4. A new window dropped down and I inserted a DVD-R
    5. Clicked the 'Close' button
    6. The speed selection is 'grayed out' but the 'Test Only' radio box was available
    7. Hover my mouse over the 'grayed out' selection and it says 'Select a slower speed to work around burn failures', but I can't
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Rod

Yes, you can set the burn speed in the iDVD '08 Preferences (finally).
I just can figure out what your problem is with Disk Utility - it's probably something simple we are overlooking.

  • How do you change burn/writing speed in disk utility

Ok I have some ISO files that I am trying to burn using Disk Utility. At the end of the burning process I get a error message of "Unable to burn (file name) ... code 0x00000005
I another post where error code 0x00000005 was talked about. A suggestion was made to slow down the burn speed and that worked for this person. My issue is how can I slow down the burn speed via disk utility before the process starts.
    Please help with this issue

Click the blue triangle near the top-right of the burning window to show urn options.

  • When burning iso with disk utility, the audio is off!

I have an ISO file that works fine when I mount it or watch it on VLC.   If I burn it using windows (in parallels) it is fine...
But when I burn it with disk utility, the audio is off by a second or so.  I can't figure this out since it is a disk image.  there shouldn't be a way to dissociate the audio.  I did have a previous version of the iso file that was off..  Is it possible that I am trying to burn an iso file and it is burning a mounted version from before (even though I am choosing this from the finder?)
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
I though macs just work.  Seems a bit more complicated.

I don't recall for sure about "disk utility" and DVD and/or Bluray. It seems to me that Toast is usually used.

  • Changing burn speed in Disk Copy

I am using 10.2.8 so I use Disk Copy rather than Disk Utility to burn a disk image (.dmg) to a CD. It doesn't give me an option to change the burn speed and I can tell by the quick result that it is using the full 8X speed of my burner. I want to use 4X which from my experience with this burner is more reliable. How can I change the burn speed?
If you want to suggest that I buy 10.4, hold off and let someone answer the question about 10.2.8 first. Thanks.

Is the burner original Apple equipment or a third-party unit added later? On some Macs (what kind is yours--it may be helpful to know), third-party drives do not get fully supported without a little third-party software. I installed a Lite-On 52X burner in my Beige G3 with 10.2.8. According to lots of places, that should support Finder burning but it doesn't fully; like you, I get no speed control. Even after upgrading to Panther It did not fully work.
At the suggestion of the burner's reseller, I use the freeware BurnX Free. Problem's gone for me but I haven't tried it with .dmg burning.

  • How do you burn project as Disk Utility?

I have been getting an error message #6 (0x29,0x00) on every project I try to burn to my external LaCie burner. I have burned several projects on it before. I have been doing all the things that the pros on this site say to do,delete idvdplist, clear caches, set iDVD preferences, and I saved project as a disk image, and tried to burn the project IMG as a disk utility, but I kept getting this: a stop sign, and it said: The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry. What should I do next?
    Thanks for the advice.

tried to burn the project IMG as a disk utility,
You do mean burn with disk utility, right?
What brand and type DVD are you using?

  • Burning .iso with Disk Utility (Mac)?

Anyone doing this? I read it can be done but I just tried and it didn't work.
It's been a long 72 hours or so trying different ways to get my 82-minute 3D feature to various bluray permutaions (i.e. side by side, red-cyan, and of course, 2D) (saving the MVC multiplexing for another day).
Anyway, I was hoping I could just make an .iso image in Encore and then burn multiple copies with Disk Utility. Some sources say it can be done, but it didn't work on my 10.8 iMac. Thanks, all!

  • Help burning DVD with Disk Utility

I have a Mac Mini with a SuperDrive.
System Profiler confirms that I can write a DVD-R:
But Disk Utility won't let me burn a DVD. With a brand spanking new blank DVD-R in the drive, it says "Write Ability: Read Only":
What's the problem, and how do I burn my .dmg disk image?
Mac Mini Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Eject the disk.
In disk Utility, select the disk image file and click the burn button.
A drop down window should appear and ask for a blank disk. Insert the disk.
Soon the window should change and show burn options, and the burn button at the bottom right should turn blue. Choose any options you need and click the blue burn button.

  • BURN DVD Using Disk Utility not Bootable

I have downloaded TechTool Deluxe for Intel and PPC. Following instructions in Disk Utility, I made/Burned DVD's of each .dmg for Power PC & Intel based computers.
Neither DVD will boot on computers using OS 10.5.6. The PPC DVD has OS 10.4.4 and the Intel has OS 10.4.5. I have tried restart using System Preferences, the "C" key, and "Option".
Can someone tell me how to boot from the DVD's or tell me what I may have done incorrectly?
    Bud

There must be some misunderstanding here.
It is the TechTool CD that must boot. If an operating system was installed on the CD via Disk Utility Burn then it should start up on that CD. It does not, even though it will show up in System Preferences/Startup Disk and "Options". I see it as a matter of how Apple installs the .dmg onto the CD as a legitimate startup disk.
All my computers work fine with 10.5.6 or lesser for older machines. The purpose of Techtools for me is to assure that they continue to do so.
The reason for a second G5 is that the first one had an LED light "on" on the logic board making it somewhat inoperable. The second machine comes clean. 10.5.X was installed nicely.

  • Making A .dmg And Burning It In Disk Utility?

Recently I turned an iDVD project into a .dmg and dropped it onto a DVD to burn.
I ended up with a DVD containing a copy of the .dmg which of course would not play in any DVD player (except the one in the Mac!).
    What should I have done?
Opened the .dmg to reveal the Audio and Video TS folders and dragged them onto the DVD to burn?

    Just like this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2087?viewlocale=en_US
There are several advantages to creating a disk image file.
It can be transferred to an external drive or another computer.
It is self-contained so that all the media information is encoded into its file. iDVD is just a container that references the movies, photos and audio used in its projects. The media is not actually put into an iDVD project. When you burn directly from iDVD, all that media information has to be accessed for the burn.
Because a disk image file is self-contained, you can delete the original iDVD project and any media used in it and still retain the ability to burn further DVDs. Many people think that they will save their iDVD projects and delete/change/rename/move the original iMovie or other media used in it. They are disappointed when trying to burn another DVD and find that iDVD cannot locate the media for the burn.
A disk image file is usually smaller in size than the original media, so you can save drive space.
I have ALL my iDVD projects saved as disk image files. Most have been created within iDVD, the .img files; but some had to be created from a burned DVD that was made before iDVD had such an option, the .dmg files. Either can be put into Disk Utility to burn another DVD disk.

  • Problem burning disc with Disk Utility

I made a DVD in iDVD. I checked to see how big the project was and I had only used 1.2G or the 4G available. I then did "save as disc image" to my desktop. After that was completed, which took over 2 hours, I tried to use Disk Utility to burn a DVD. When I insert the DVD it says there is not enough space available. I then check my project in iDVD and the line that tells the amount of space used is completely red (all used up and over). I completely shut down iDVD and reopen and the project is back at the 1.2G size. It's a relatively small project so I'm fairly sure that it really is 1.2 and not over the limit.
I tried this procedure twice to make sure there was enough space when I start the whole process.
In the very beginning I tried to burn the project within iDVD. It burned and ejected but the screen didn't reflect that it had finished and did not ask if I wanted to burn another disc. The screen said it was still finishing the burn. The disc had ejected and it played just fine on my t.v. The only problem with this way is that I need to make lots of copies of this and having to force quit and start again makes every disc take approx. 2-1/2 hours each.

Evidently I'm not understanding what you are asking.
When I'm in iDVD I go under Project and click
"Project Info". Project Duration is 36:01 minutes.
In DVD Capacity it says 1.0 GB of 4.2 GB is being
used. I thought that was what you were wanting.
Thank you for your help. If you could tell me where
to look for the info you want I will do it promptly.
The Project Information probably doesn't include the DVD-ROM contents you want to include (and it's only a poor guess at what will be actually needed).
If your project is 36 minutes, I would expect it to actually require over 2 GB of DVD space with either 'Best Performance' or 'Best Quality' selected.
It was my understanding at the start that you HAD created a disk image file on your hard drive of your iDVD project. Is this true? This WOULD include the DVD-ROM area if things went well. I am asking you to tell me the actual size of this disk image file (click on it to select it and then select File>Get Info).
I suspect the size of the DVD-ROM area you want to create is causing your problems. Are all the digital images you want to include in the DVD-ROM area in one folder? If so, what is the size of this folder (click on it to select it and then select File>Get Info)?

  • IDVD image files not always burning using Disk Utility

I am using iDVD 06 to create media, from FCE .mov, and have been using the "Create DVD image file" option so that I can make quick copies for clients as needed. Recently a LOT of my gens, using Disk Utility, have been rejected as 'not verifiable' hence wasting a good disk. Some of them do get created successfully. I am currently using WINDATA DVD+R disks. Not sure if this is an iDVD problem or Disk Utility problem frankly. Have reverted back to creating multiple copies in iDVD after the initial 'slow' burn of the original. Thanks

I am currently using WINDATA DVD+R disks. Not sure if this is an iDVD problem or Disk Utility problem frankly
There is a third choice that I think is the most likely problem source - WINDATA DVD+R disks themselves.
I'm 'not big' on + media for single layer disks anyway, but if you are supplying clients with discs you burned, you really ought to use good quality media like Verbatim or Maxell.
BTW, I always recommend reducing the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower (I use 2x)
