View-By-Artist BUG in iPods (Apple, please note this)...

If you're expecting to be able to use your iPod to view ALL songs by a particular artist using the MUSIC>ARTIST screen -- DON'T. We'll, not unless you've assigned every song an album. Here's the bug:
iPod won't list songs in the MUSIC>ARTIST screen if it meets the following condition:
-It doesn't have an album name (MP3 tag)
-there is one or more songs by the same artist that are from JUST ONE other album
Otherwise, if the song doesn't belong to any album (no album name) and there aren't any other songs by that artist listed under an album name, you will be able to view the songs when it lists "ALL" under the artist's name.
Similarly, if the song doesn't belong to any album (no album name) and there are at least TWO different albums listed under that artist, then you can view it as well under the "ALL" list under the artist's name.
The problem is that iPod doesn't show the "ALL" menu for the artist if you have just ONE album under the artist and another song by the same artist which doesn't have any text in it's album MP3tag.
I hope this bug gets fixed because it gives me the impression that I'm missing songs from my iPod.

Hi,
Thanks for the information. The only downside is that this forum is for users to help fellow users so it's unlikely those at Apple who should see this will.

I only use Image Capture, so I can't speak for other software.
Here is how I select a Scan To destination:

  • Ipod not connecting again, apple please read this.

First let me state that I made posts awhile back about my Ipod touch not being able to be recognized by itunes at all and just as a camera by windows. Now every single guide did nothing to help and the FEW people that posted had posted things I already did that did not help.
HOWEVER the version of Itunes that was prior to the one I just downloaded connected PERFECTLY with no issues.
But I just updates and wouldnt you know it, the connection problem is BACK. Apple please read this, the last version of Itunes had something different with how it connected to the Ipod...PLEASE bring that back, its so inconvenient not being able to connect to my own Ipod
If someone wants to post a reply that might help feel free...but everything on this website and even a few others not posted here have not worked, this is mostly me praying that Apple reads it...that tiny difference on how it connected made a huge difference with my computer.

Thanks. I worked out a simpler method of turning off the internet access - just switching off my wireless modem. Either way, this works and with the PC not connected to the internet, all three Apple devies will sync.
Thinking about it now, I had a similar problem a few versions ago which I recognised because with Home Sharing on and connected to the internet iTunes was trying to find files from someone in another hotel room who also sharing the hotel's wireless network. My devices would not sync then either. This seemed to be resolved with subsequent itunes upgrades until now ....
Thanks for the advice. Let's hope Apple's next 'update' actually updates itunes so it can sync Apple devices whilst simultaneously connected to the internet (not a big ask really).

  • Wrong CD Titles Displayed THIS IS A BUG IN OSX APPLE PLEASE FIX

I've been having this same problem for YEARS. Can comeone at Apple please address this issue? Here's what happens. I load a custom CD that has never been in the machine before and it should just display this CD as "title" or some other generic notation. Instead, the operating system displays the CD NAME OF THE LAST CD I BURNED. The system also ASSIGNS THE TRACK NAMES OF THE LAST CD BURNED. The tracks will continue to be mislabeled when importing into a digital editor. WHY HASN'T APPLE FIXED THIS? This has been going on since 10.2.8 fercrissakes.
Where is CD title information stored? I've gone through my ~/Library/Cache folder and couldn't find anything there.

The information is stored in "CD Info.cidb" in your preferences folder.
It will also look on the internet if the option is enabled in the "Importing" tab of iTune's "Advanced" preference.
It looks up the track names based on the combination of all the track lengths. If you make more than one CD with the track lengths the same, it will think they are the same CD.

  • Apple, please address this issue!!! Searching and special characters

I've found at least one other topic here regarding this issue, but Apple has yet to address it, or even confirm that it's in fact an issue.
A big portion of my library consists of international artists, many who have special/nonstandard characters in their names (e.g. "Tiësto"). In previous versions of iTunes, I could search for "Tiesto" (note the absence of the umlaut over the 'e') and all of those tracks would appear. However, after upgrading to iTunes 9, I'm forced to search for "Tiësto" in order to view those tracks.
Thinking about this issue, it would seem that this is normal behavior, as an artist named "Pàz" isn't necessarily the same as "Paz". But the reality is that NO ONE wants to take the time to search for the alt-code of a special character, and then type it in. Additionally, most people (including me) have a number of reasons for not renaming the artist to conform to standard characters.
Clearly, something has changed between iTunes 8 and 9. And it's incredibly frustrating. A big chunk of my library is virtually inaccessible to me now, unless I search for terms that don't contain special characters.
Apple, **PLEASE** address this issue. I'm not the only one with the problem and it's become a huge pain in my side to have to work around this.

I don't see how it's sloppy or why there should be any reason that it shouldn't have given you both.
Even putting aside that gracenote and others don't have consistent spelling in their databases, that when you download from the iTunes store, who knows what you're going to get, so that one's library could be all over the place and one might not even notice it, accents and other markings don't change the fact that a u is the same letter as ú.
Yes, it's pronounced different. Yes, the difference is very important. But it's the same base letter. And even if it's considered a different letter in another language, in English we have 26 letters and all the accents and tildes and umlauts don't make them a new letter, which is what we're talking about here.
It's a huge pain that looking for an album that has "Zürich" in the field and I type in "Zurich" I can't find it. I have to think about if I really do have that album, maybe I deleted it by accident, etc. And then I think to type "rich" and then it pops up.
That's way too many steps. I don't know keyboard shortcuts and I don't want to learn them. In English, it should be letters, not characters, that count.

  • Apple please make this..... i am begging you...

Can you find a way to make some sort of portable smaller "ghettoblaster" or "boom box" like unit, that has an integrated air port in it, as well as an am/fm, and typical features, as well as kicking good sound. It would be perfect for taking out on the deck or balcony and using the existing airport network and play the music that is already playing in the house via iTunes. With the remote function on the iPhone it would be seamless. I already have about four air port express units in my place and do want the ability to go outside with out having to plug in both the radio/ipod speakers as well as the air port. It seems that it is one of those things that i thought was made already but the lady in the Apple store looked at me like a confused puppy. Apple please make this so i can add it to the already long slit of products I want.

I am having the same problem with a new phone. Is yours new? I was planning to take this one back to the store where I purchased it. I updated itunes and phone software, didn't help, so I'm thinking it's a hardware problem.

Do you have a smaller capacity micro SD card to try? I seem to remember from past posts that users were having problems with cards larger than 32GB, however, Apple's page doesn't mention this.

  • Connecting external drive crashes iMovie 8 - Apple please fix this!

If I have external drives connected when I start iMovie 8 it will crash when it tries to index them.
Also if I have no drives connected and iMovie 8 running, the program will crash as soon as I connect a drive.
Apple, please fix this! I need to use external drives for storing of my videos.

Are your external drives formatted as Mac OS Extended / HFS+ ..? They should be.
If they aren't, you'll have to remove whatever's already stored on them, and then re-format them using Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. You can then put back what was stored on them.
(P.S: I have NO crashes using iMovie '08 and any correctly-formatted external FireWire drives. I don't use external USB drives, as they're not fast enough for the sustained read/write speeds which video requires.)

  • Do you have the 'By Artist' bug on iPod Video 5G??

Can anyone help me confirm these?
The first one is so annoying, as it is effectively disabling a large number of my songs when I go to look for them by 'artist'. The second bug is just annoying!
    1. iPod 5G artist listing bug
    Environment:
Bug occurs when an 'Artist' has songs attributed to only 1 album and you have tracks for that artist that are not associated to any album (album ID3 tag is blank on some tracks).
    Problem:
When you browse to Artist, and select the artist, it jumps straight to the album listing of the 1 album you have, not allowing you to browse 'All' to see songs that are not connected to any album. The songs are definitely on the iPod though, as they are listed in the 'Songs' area. Desired behavior is for 'All' to list all tracks, both on albums and not.
Supplemental: This needs to be fixed regardless - 'All' needs to be present on the screen if the artist only has 1 album but tracks not associated to that album - however, what may be a good addition is a menu option for browsing songs that have no album. - so you could go 'All' (and potentially be faced with a very long list of songs) or choose 'No album' (or similar) to show songs by that artist that have no defined album. I can see user behaviour in some tasks needing this option.
    2. Artist 'All' view song order bug
    Environment:
When you have an artist that has many albums of content, all with songs.
    Problem:
Go to an artist you have lots of albums for, then choose 'All' instead of an album. The tracks are ordered alpha *by album* (with the album details not shown, just the song names, obviously). The songs are not listed by 'alpha song title' as you would expect them to be. How on earth are you supposed to find anything on this list? This has to be a bug. Expected behaviour should be that if a user browses to an album, a user wants to see the tracks ordered by track listing, and if no track listing ID3 info, by alpha instead. However, when I go to 'All', I'd expect an alpha ordering by song title (unless shuffle was on, of course!). If you have one unit of information - song titles - ordered by another unit of information that isn't present or explained, then users consider the ordering to be 'random' instead. Please fix!

Apple's response on your first issue:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302773
I agree that the second issue is kinda annoying (alphabetic listing of all songs when browsing through Artists -> [artist name] -> All)

  • Play count still doesn't work with 3.1.3. APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS!

    APPLE! PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM!
I am getting tired of having to try an remember what episode of my shows I was on! I'm an avid anime watcher who queues up whole series' on my iPod Touch 3g 32GB and go to watch 12 episodes or so, connect the iPod, disconnect, go back to series, pow! they all report they are unwatched! Btw, I use Manually Manage Music settings, not auto sync.
Same thing with my music. I know I have listened to one song at least 40 times, and still the play count is at 2. Because iTunes remembers to count it but can't remember to count the iPod's count when it counts.
This is probably a REALLY EASY FIX, you guys are just so lazy to not fix this problem and say that Apple products have the best customer support?! If you want to boast that please fix the simple problems! I have a 70 episode series I'm starting soon and I don't want to have to right down where I left off.

No correct, you do not need iOS for FaceTime. You only needed to update to iOS 6.1.6.
