View meta data items in Windows explorer

How to view metadata columns of a document library that I put in explorer view? It only displays generic columns.

windows explorer can't display them. Explorer view was really only in place as a kind of shim to bridge the gap until people get more used to SharePoint. Its slower to browse (arguable, I know, but WebDAV isn't great), doesn't have the capabilities
to show all of the columns/checkout/start workflows/etc, allows you to corrupt things if you edit a folder/file which isn't just a piece of user content, and a few other drawbacks/limitations.
in 2013, they have added the ability to do bulk uploads without it, so its even less needed. Many of the organizations I have been working with lately have started to block explorer view functionality as well.

Can't view LR metadata modifications on Windows Explorer? What gives?

Hi all,
This is my first question to the community, I searched for the answer to this problem here and elsewhere but not able to find out why, hope you can help.
I'm coming to grips with managing data in LR but I've stumbled upon a snag. I'm using LR 5.7 and adding metadata to CR2 and JPG files and wanted to check whether the metadata modifications showed up on Windows Explorer. It appears as if they don't. My workflow is detailed below, could you point out if I'm missing anything?
What I did was fill some IPTC and EXIF fields on LR 5.7 and click on "save metadata to file". The fields I added data to was headline and description (IPTC), user comment (EXIF) and title and caption fields (Lightroom's own fields I presume).
However the metadata I added does not display on Windows Explorer (upon right click/properties/details). I'm using Windows 7 and MS website says Explorer is able to display IPTC and EXIF fields. This however does not seem to be the case. Did anyone else come across this problem or am I doing sth wrong.
To test it further I modified Title, Subject and Comments fields on Windows Explorer (through file properties/details tab),.I don't know whether these fields are an official part of IPTC or EXIF standards but they don't display on LR either.

My Windows File Explorer (8.1) does show some of the metadata that LR 5.7 writes, but not all. I no longer have access to Windows 7, but I'm certain that it does too. LR 5.7 will also read metadata written by Windows Explorer.
Some general caveats:
- Be sure to Save Metadata To File in LR, or better, set the option Edit > Catalog Settings > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.
- When you make changes to metadata outside of LR, be sure to Read Metadata From File to get it back into LR.
- When you make changes with the Explorer Properties window, make sure you click OK or Apply.
- Use the free Exiftool if you want to examine metadata authoritatively. Virtually every other program, including LR, Windows Explorer, and OS X Finder, has significant problems and limitiations with metadata.
I can't explain all that you're seeing. If you can't figure it out using Exiftool, then I suggest taking a sample pic you've written with LR, upload it to Dropbox or similar, and post the link here; we can take a look.
The LR metadata fields you mentioned map to these industry-standard fields:
Title > XMP:Title, IPTC:ObjectName
Caption, Description > EXIF:ImageDescription, XMP:Description, IPTC:Caption-Abstract
Headline > XMP:Headline, IPTC:Headline
User Comment > EXIF:UserComment
Windows File Explorer doesn't show Headline, and it has somewhat different mappings for Title. You can experiment for yourself with Exiftool.

How to retrieve items from Windows Explorer like My Computer?

How can a java program retrieve item names in the Windows Explorer directory structure [i.e. items in the left pane like Desktop, My Computer, Printer, Control Panel, Dial-up Networking etc.]. I retrieved all the drive names and directories using java.io.File class and displayed using JTree.

I don't believe that a lot of those items are actually "files" and directories, if you use the "dir" command in a DOS box from your Desktop I don't think you can find them...if you can then they are files etc...
Since stuff like "Control Panel" is OS specific (i.e. Windoz) then Java wouldn't support it in the core API...

How do I view an FTP site in Windows Explorer for drag and drop file upload in Firefox?

In Internet Explorer you have the drop-down menu option called '''"Page"''' (located below the address bar, on the right-hand side). In the options listed you can''''' "Open FTP side in Windows Explorer"'''''.
I cannot seem to locate a similar option within Firefox 4.0.

How to View Meta Data for a .fm File?

Running WinXP Pro, SP2 and FM 7.0.
Would like to view items such as a document's Dictionary and default zoom level. How can I get to this data?

Can't view IPad photo's in windows explorer window

I can sync my iPad to my window 7 computer using iTunes software, however in My Computer; I can not see my iPad, nor am I able to drill down to my photo folder on the iPad to import only selected photo's to my computers hard drive. Is this a rights issue, software bug or Microsoft/Apple still fighting?

Currently, for the past hour it has been "Preparing to Import.." after I chose to import directly from the external hard drive.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
It sounds like the library on the external is damaged. Restore from back up is the simplest solution.

Is it possible to view meta data settings on a recorded clip?

I have the Vixia HF G30 and am wondering if the aperture value and the shutter speed information is stored somewhere. I don't see this information when I load the clip into Finalcut X or when it's still in the recorder.

I guess, that leaves us no choice but to use the browser on your laptop. Perhaps another gadget you have in there aside from Nintendo? Are you using Opera browser on your Nintendo? Check DSiWare to download another type of browser of some sort.
I just noticed, mine is http://192.168.1.1/Filters.asp while yours is .htm. Is there any difference? I'm not that good when it comes to that.

App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data [1] in the file sessionstore.js [2] in the Firefox profile folder [3].
Make sure that you do not use "Clear Recent History" to clear the "Browsing History" when Firefox is closed because that prevails and prevents Firefox from opening tabs from the previous session.

It is also possible to use the "Show my windows and tabs from last time" setting, that is usually a more reliable way to restore session data.

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then make sure that Session is unchecked in the settings for the Firefox application.

Preserving doc "Date Created" as displayed in Windows explorer

Hello. We've just retired an SBS and have about 2000 Word docs that have their attached templates linked to the obsolete server. Using EditAttachedTemplates (vb.net) solves the missing template problem but introduces another. It wipes the
Date Created - for Windows explorer purposes.
Our staff accesses all of the .docm's by windows explorer (sorted by "Date Created"). Without the template repair app, each doc takes 30 seconds to open and machines are searching for the old server.
I do not have access to the source code of the template repair app. Also... I am not a dev and we do not employ one. So... hypothetically, if I could find someone to alter the vb repair app, could it in theory be adjusted so that the original
"Date Created" as displayed in W7 explorer would be unchanged?

This code has following issues:
1. Its "Last Modified" date retention line returns an error. "Object does not support this action". I worked it around using the Shell method though.

PNG files sent to iphone Photo App do not appear on 'date taken' (manually added in windows explorer)

I have over 1000 PNG files that do not have exif 'date taken'. They only have exif 'date created or modified'
The 'date created/modified' is not the actual date that I took the screen shots.
I added the 'date taken' manually in windows explorer. However, it seems that this does not write this data into the exif 'date taken' which remains blank.
When I transfer the PNG file from the PC to IPhone Photo App, it does not appear on the 'date taken' (that I added manually) but appears on the exif 'date created or modified'.
Interestingly, when I do same as above but with JPG file, it does show up correctly based on the 'date taken' (that I added manually in windows explorer).
So I converted the PNG file to JPG using one of the online tools. However, when I do this, the converted file does not retain the 'date taken'.
I can fix the above by:
1. Use Paint to save the PNG file as JPG; this retains the 'date taken' but this is not the solution I am looking for as I would need to do this for each file (there is no bulk 'save as' in Paint)
2. Use a file conversion tool to bulk convert from PNG to JPG; but again this is not solution, as I would have to manually add the 'date taken' in windows explorer to each JPG file
Alternatively, I tried to rename the file name to include the 'date taken' and then use an exif date changer app to set the xhif dates based on file name.
However, I was not able to find any software that would allow me to do this. The software that I have seen only picks up the 'date taken' from file EXIF data. But in my case there is no such data in the file - only the 'date taken' that I manually added in Windows Explorer.
Any advice is appreciated. All I want to do is transfer PNG files from PC to Iphone Photo app and have these files appear in Photo app based on the 'date taken' (the one I manually added in windows - not the date taken in exif data).

Have you touched the "More" button (on the iPhone).
then gone to Audio Books.
Are they there?
I had an audio book still on my iphone, it survivedf the iOS5 update.
To get rid of it, I plugged iPhone into Mac,
Go to itunes.
Click on Iphone in iTunes.
Go to Books tab,
Scroll down, there is audio books.
Choose sync selected audio books,
And untick the ones I don;t want.

Windows Explorer Viewing Problem

Hi,
I would definitely appreciate some help. I am probably doing something wrong. I installed the DNG Codec so I could view my DNG files in Windows Explorer. I am running Windows 7.
Unfortunately after installing, I still cannot view the DNG files in Windows Explorer.    Instead all I see in Windows Explorer are the icons of the water, mountains, and clouds each file.
I'm sure I have done something wrong but can't figure out what.   Thank you for any information or advice you can share.

Sorry to hear about your viewing problems as well.   I can now see DNG files in Windows Explorer from files are are on my pc, but Windows Explorer will not let me view them from DNG files I have saved to a DVD.   Now that seems really strange.   Hopefully our viewing problems will be solved soon. Thanks.

Screen is open in Black PDf Document & not in Windows Explorer

Firefox's built-in PDF viewer is not as full-featured as Adobe's viewer and does not always handle advanced PDF layouts correctly. If you haven't already, try switching your PDF viewer in Firefox using the steps in this article: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].
Also, to make sure your Adobe viewer is up-to-date, I suggest opening your stand-alone Adobe application (either Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader) and using its Help menu > Check for Updates. Keeping the software up to date will help protect you from attacks that use specially crafted PDF documents to break into your system.

Windows explorer doesn't open LLB files.

was running LV6, 6.1, now 7.0 on win98 machine.
recently ran microsoft regclean and now I have no more support for
viewing inside .LLB files through windows explorer. Attempting to
re-enable this through LabVIEW/tools/options does not help.
Any hints?

It appears that running regclean has busted this function by
removing 7 entries from the system registry.
Running ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS/National Instruments/LabVIEW/repair,
repaired the problem, and returned Windows Explorer support for LLB
files, unfortunately it also removes the LabVIEW registration name and
Ser#, but this can be easily found (and repaired) in ...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS
LABVIEW
7.0
in the system registry and values typed in for Registered Owner & Serial
Number fixes the 'unregistered' on the splash screen.
back to the LLB Explorer support problem,
What I actually did was to,
1) run regclean to make sure there wasn't any crap in the registry.
2) fix the LLB Explorer support
problem by 'repairing' LabVIEW from the
ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS system function.
3) run regclean
4) rename the 'UNDOwhatever.REG' file (in regclean directory) to 'Fix
LabVIEW LLB Support.reg'
5) Finally, double click 'Fix LabVIEW LLB Support.reg' to put the data
back into the system registry.
In this way, if I ever run regclean again and it removes the LLB
file support in Windows Explorer, all I have to do is run 'Fix LabVIEW
LLB Support.reg' instead of repairing (re-installing) LabVIEW.
I did this in on a Windows 98 system with LabVIEW 7.0. Your milage may
vary with other platforms or applications.

FSDB File Meta Data not accurate

I have some folders on an FSDB (Windows NT Share). When I view the files, the modified date is correct. If I view the documents via the portal, the modified date is older than the date shown via Windows explorer. If I click the action Icon and select details, the information is the same as the Window share. Once I close that window, the portal refreshes and now the date is updated.

Can someone explain how / why the two dates are not in sinc?

From Firefox, can I open an FTP site in Windows Explorer?

Firefox presents a simple FTP view of files. Firefox does not support active FTP mode, or uploading. Thus, some other program must be used to navigate and work an FTP site.
Windows - Internet Explorer - provides a connection to open and view an FTP site via Windows Explorer.
Why can't Firefox do the same?
