  • Unable to view files on external hard drive. Progress Bar

I have been deleting various files from my external hard drive and now I cannot see the remainder of the files. Although the Trash is empty, it still shows there is something there and I get a small window that shows progress bar. I can still see the external hard drive files via spotlight, so they are still there. I have tried
    Force Quit
    Restart
    Shut Down
    Forced Shut Down
I feel sure that has something to do with the Trash?
    Please...Any Ideas

  • How to view a windows external hard drive on a mac?

I have this windows xp laptop with an external hd attached to it. I want to be able to view and edit the files on that hard drive from my macbook over my wireless home network. How do I do this? How can I mount the hard drive on my macbook?

Yes, an NTFS driver for MacOS is an option, but since the OP asked to do this over his wireless network, then your answer would not work, as they would need to unplug the drive from the XP system and connect it to the Mac (after downloading and installing the driver you referenced). The solution I gave allows them to read/write the NTFS drive without downloading or installing anything that they don't already have on their Mac (or PC).

  • Not able to view exFAT format external hard drive in my macbook pro 10.8.2.

I have formatted my hard drive in exFAT format from a windows notebook. I am not sure what to do as I am not able to view my hard drive in my macbook.
Can somebody please help me out in this regard.?

Try connecting the exFAT drive back to the Windows notebook and use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your Taskbar.
Run a updated malware scan and/or remove any original data and reformat the drive again.
Your issue doesn't appear to be widespread, so I'm leaning towards something that got messed up somehow.
Mac's can read/write MBR/GUID and FAT32/exFAT drives, only can read NTFS, so it shouldn't be having a problem.

  • Viewing movies from external hard drive in MOV format.....help!!!

I just has some 8MM reel movies converted and stored on an eternal hard drive. My brother makes movies and asked them to be put into MOV format. He is out of the country for a while. Need help getting them opened so I can view them

As a first step, right click on one of the MOV clips and select OPEN WITH...QUICKTIME PLAYER.
After you have done this, click WINDOW/INSPECTOR in QuickTIme Player and tell us everything that the Inspector tells you.
You should also be able to hit the play button in QuickTime Player and watch the clip.

  • How do I read/open an external hard drive after using time machine?

I have an external Seagate HD that I used to back up files using Time Machine.  How do I now read/open/view the Seagate External Hard Drive to see all that was saved for example documents, photos etc?

    probe_droid wrote:
TimeMachine does an exact copy of the hardrive that you backed-up.
Not exactly, but close. It doesn't duplicate files and folders that haven't changed. It creates hard links to the originals so that it looks as if they are in the current dated folders, but they really aren't. I think this even throws off the Finder, sometimes. That's why digging through the Time Machine backup via the Finder is not a good idea and will likely cause more consternation.
Pondini has a nice FAQ and troublshooting site devoted to Time Machine. It is well worth everyone's time to take a look at what he has compiled. On the troubleshooting page are links to some tools that will allow you to peek into the backup and see what has or hasn't been backed up.

  • Do you know about external hard drives?

I have an acer notebook and I would love to be able to play The Sims 2 PC games. And so, someone recommended that I get an external hard drive to play it.
I was wondering if I would be able to play any PC games on my acer if I had an external hard drive.
And if so what are my options on external hard drives would be best for me to get?

Bianca, I agree with starflyer. Playing visualy complex games like that isn't really a function of the size of your hard drive ( though an external HD for a notebook is always prudent investment ) but rather, its a function of the capability of the cpu, the amount of internal memory, and what your graphics platform you have. Most notebooks have "intigrated" graphics built into them and are very limiting when playing demanding games. Graphics cards are one solution, but, I don't know of any notebooks that actually use a separate card for graphics given the size constraints and the severe power and heat demands they can put on a system. I can recommend 3 things : by all means, get a good external hard drive, preferably one that is considered "portable" in your case. Find out how much internal memory you can install and have a knowlegable person install it. Finally, go to www.cpuid.com and download cpu-z, it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your system, useful if you want to upgrade.

  • How do I view and open all my files again that are on my external hard drive?? Error message saying 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' Three options are Initialize, Ignore or Eject.

I have recently purchased Toshiba 1TB hard drive and I set it up and I was able to transfer all my files onto it such as my music, photos, documents. I had correctly ejected and used it again and all these files were safely stored and accessible afterwards. However after I rebooted my computer as it had been going slow and I had too much clogging it up once I reconnected the external hard drive I have error message saying 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' Three options are Initialize, Ignore or Eject. How do I access all my files? I set it up to work on both mac and windows. I have tried both another mac and windows computer and same issue occurs?? I am worried that all my personal files are gone but am confused as the drive has had absolutely no damage to it as it was in a very short time frame and its never left the same spot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Issues with using my iPhoto library on my external hard drive.  Very slow to open and pictures disappear in thumbnail view.

I have recently transferred my iPhoto Library to my external hard drive (WD MyBook Live) and have some questions.  Since I have done this and used the "alt + option" to select it as my default library I have been having some issues.  When using the library on the external drive as my default drive it takes a very long time to load compared to when it was on my macbook's hard drive. Is this normal?  Also, once it does load the thumbnails are only viewable when scrolling quickly through the photos and they are very blurry.  However, if I were to select one randomly (because of this problem I have no way of knowing which one I'm selecting) it brings it up in the edit view and it is a crystal clear picture.
Is there a way to fix these issues?  I'd love to be able to use the iPhoto Library off the external drive to free up space on my macbook but if it isn't going to work as streamlined as it would on my macbook hard drive.  I have not yet deleted the original iPhoto Library from my macbook because I did not want to do so until I knew the new iPhoto library on the external drive was working properly.  Does this make a difference?
    Please help!

The problem lies with occasional dropouts that can corrupt the library's database files if they are being written to as the time of dropout.  It's the nature of wireless networks.  If you have a very strong signal throughout and are willing to take a chance then go for it.
But as for the speed, it must be iPhoto 11 and it's complexity causing the slowness. I had tried using a library on an EHD connected to my iMac from my laptop wirelessly with iPhoto 7 or 8 and it was pretty fast.  I think it was 7 before faces and places came into being.

  • I am trying copy dvd's (with no luck) to my macbook and then on to an external hard drive.  What appears to be "copied" on the hard drive comes up with an error when you try to view the movies.

I am new to the Apple community and am having a lot of trouble.  I am using a Macbook Pro and attempting to copy movies to an external hard drive for my husbands upcoming travels.  I have used the "disk utility" and was able to watch the movie from my Pro but have not been able to figure out how to copy it to the external hard drive.  I have a few movies on the external hard drive already but when he tries to view them from his Macbook Air or even the Pro we are unable to do so.  An error message comes up and we are not able to determine what we need to do to fix this.  We are not computer savvy and would appreciate if someone could explain to us how to resolve this problem.  Thank you for all and any help we can get.

  • APPLE TV (GEN 2): How to view the movies on my external hard drive?

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro, with Itunes. I already know how to set-up HOME SHARING with the APPLE TV that allows me to view my Itunes library from my TV.
But on my laptop, with the FRONT ROW feature, I set-up a ALIAS in the movie folder on my computer so that the files from my external hard drive were viewable from the movies folder in FRONT ROW. This great feature now allows me to view my content on my laptop (on Itunes) and the movies on my external hard drive, all on FRONT ROW on the Macbook Pro.
When I opened and set-up the Apple TV (Gen 2), I was surprised that it isn't like FRONT ROW. Instead, it only allows the content on my Itunes to be viewed.
This is a downside because I have only 35 GB free on my internal hard-drive, and all of 350+ GB of movies are on my EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE (Western Digital MY BOOK). Also, the movies files on my external hard drive are .AVI, .M4V, and .MP4
Another question I have is what is the USB port on the back of the APPLE TV for? Can it be used for the external hard drive or no?
Basically, I want to watch all the movies from my external hard drive on my TV.
Can I set this up to happen and how?
If not, what should I do to be able to watch the movies from my computer/external hard drive on my TV?
*Please share as much information as you all can because I need to view all my options (if any) in this situation and I value all the advice....THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!*
    EQUIPMENT:
    Laptop: MACBOOK PRO 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 1067 MHZ DDR3 MAC OS X 10.6.6
    Apple TV: Gen 2
TV: Vizio 37" HDTV HMDI LCD
External Hard Drive: Western Digital MY BOOK (USB 2.0 + Firewire)

I followed exactly what you advised, and it all worked. I did convert the files first that were .AVI ---> .MP4 (the audio and video came out beautifully when viewed). I organized my files around a bit, and then I went into Itunes---> Preferences---> Advanced---> Changed where I want to grab my movies from. It keep all my previous music, tv, movies, podcasts files that I had in ITunes, and just "added" the new content without disrupting anything in my Itunes at all. I LOVED IT...so simple in the end.
The files did take a while to convert, but I only had to do the ones that I had that were labeled ".AVI". The program, HAND BRAKE, allowed me to set up a "batch" and I had them converting during the afternoon and into the evening.
    All in all....THANK YOU/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic__ _/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/ migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-a vail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstat ic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-ima ges/migration-img-not-avail.png
Since whenever I open my Itunes, all the movies display well, and so my APPLE TV can now view all my "content" in Itunes. I thought I was going to have to return that APPLE TV since I couldn't figure a way around it, and all in all, it wasn't all that bad of a process to convert and then change file location in preferences.
MANY THANKS and HAVE A GREAT WEEK

  • Viewing photos in iPhoto that were saved to an external hard drive

I recently purchased a 160gb external hard drive in response to nearly filling the 80gb internal of my Powerbook G4. In order to free up some space, I put the 6,000 photos I had accumulated on to the external. I found myself immediately regretting that decision as I couldn't then view the images on the external using iphoto (without the fear of re-importing the files). For starters, is there a way to use iphoto to see my photos while they remain on the external? Second, is it possible to somehow save the files onto my powerbook in some sort of compressed format where I could still use iphoto with them. If anyone could help me out with this, i'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

    Gage:
iPhoto has a new option of creating alias of the source files instead of importing the entire file (see iPhoto's Preferences Advanced section). Then you operate as normal. The one caveat to that is if you delete a photo from your iPhoto library it does not delete the source file, only the alias file and edited version if there is one. You have to do that via the Finder. Also you can't move the files to a new location once you're created the library. If the external HD is not mounted you'll only be able to view the thumbnails and any edited photo until the HD is mounted again. I've created some Tutorials to assist users in converting to an alias based system.

  • External hard drive suddenly became "unreadable" and the disk utility offers not repair options.  The drive is visible in disk utility but may not be mounted... any suggestions?

I have a WD My Passport 070A Media 2.0 TB external hard drive that has suddenly become unreadable on my laptop (MacBook Pro circa 2006 with 10.4.11) and I have tried on a MacBook Pro 2011 running 10.6.8 with the same results.  I had tried opening disk utility to repair the drive, but on both machines the drive is visible in the left column, with no indentation below the drive.  When I select the drive in the first aid portion the only options highlighted are info and eject...  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to repair the drive.  I am currently in Belize and am not home for 3 weeks yet.  I'm hoping for a fix while I am down here, otherwise I may have to wait...  I appreciate any assistance!
