View raw files on card before importing

Is there a way to view and select my files on my CF card in Lightroom before importing? This would save a lot of download time. I can view and select in Breezebrowser, writing down the file names and then selecting which ones to import in Lightroom. It would be much easier to do this all in Lightroom if possible.

I think you can do this in the Import dialog. There is a selectable option to Preview the files to be loaded, and once this is selected, you can view the files and select those you want to import.

  • Should I convert my Rebel XT RAW files to DNG before importing?

First, I'm glad the Automator script for renaming files is working now in Leopard. I always would import from my CF card to a directory and run an automator script to change the filenames to something somewhat useful. That broke in Leopard but it now works. But anyway, I was wondering if its worth the extra step to convert my RAW files to the Adobe Digital Negative format before importing into Aperture? Does any metadata get lost in the conversion?

I'm not aware of any metadata being lost.
According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307385, by converting to DNG, you lose
The Auto Noise Compensation adjustment under Raw Fine Tuning is not available with DNG images. Auto Noise Compensation requires specific knowledge of the camera's sensor characteristics in combination with the ISO value of the image. DNG images do not provide the needed sensor information.
but you gain lossless compression of the files by converting to DNG. A recent test converted 500MB of Xti images to about 400MB. I would rather convert to DNG in order to keep all my files in one format so in 10 years so I don't have 8 different Canon camera raw formats I have to worry about - whether or not Aperture is around.
Aperture still uses the 2.0 raw converter and not the DNG converted. I haven't yet made a decision as to if losing the auto noise compensation is that big of a deal.

  • Why can't I view RAW files in CS3

I have installed CS3 on a new MacBook Pro. I am unable to edit/view RAW files from my Nikon D5000 Digital SLR.
Can you tell me what I am doing incorrectly.

You'll need to update to CS4 to get the updated Camera RAW plugin, or use the free DNG converter to convert your NEF files to DNG before processing with CS3.

  • Most recent RAW update, New Aperture and Maverick but still Aperture cannot view RAW files from my Sony RX-100 camera.

I have all the most recent Software updates and a brand new version of Aperture but when I connect my Sony RX-100 to my MBP, Aperture cannot view or import the RAW files. It will import JPEG format. I am new to Aperture and would appreciate some advice here. Do I need an old RAW format update or is there something else I need to do here.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Lightroom crashes when viewing RAW files (LR 6)

    Hey,
my LR 6 Trial Build 1018573 crashes when viewing raw files on my mac book pro late 2010. The problem occurs when I press the right arrow several times to get to the next picture. The RAW files are Fuji. I don't expiernce the problem with LR 5.7, but migrated my whole catalog.. :-/
I turned off the automatic change of graphics mode to be sure that the better graphic-card is used.
Any help or suggestions how to solve the prolbem?
    Thanks in advance!

In the Preferences dialog, Performance tab, try turning off all GPU support.
Lots of issues with the video cards, especially ATI cards.

  • Can't view RAW files in Organizer

I have Elements 5.0 and I just downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw 4.5 (latest version to work with 5.0) and while I can now edit raw files, I cannot see them as thumbnails in Organizer.
Is there something else I need to do?  Does Elements 7.0 fix this problem?  My camera is a Canon Xti.
I am unable to view RAW files as thumbnails in Windows Explorer either, and have been told it's a Canon driver issue, but I don't think that is related.
    Thanks for any help.

This advice also applies to your case, PSE5 and ACR 4.5 (by the way, 4.6 is the latest version to work with PSE5)

  • Filter files by rating before import?

Is there any way of filtering files by rating BEFORE importing them from my camera to my PC? I can sort them once they have been imported but it would save a lot of hard drive space if I could only import the ones I rated before importing. Thanks.

No, there's no way. Few cameras allow you to set ratings.  If you want to save hard drive space, just use the library filter and delete the files after importing.

  • Iightroom version 1.4.1 cannot  view Raw files

Im having trouble viewing RAW files taken on a Nikon D700.

    Harvie,
Yes, that would be the case. The D700 came out much later than LR 1.4.1, and it produces raw files that that version of LR doesn't understand.
You can either download and use the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEFs to DNGs (which your version of LR will read), or you can upgrade to the latest version of Lightroom, for probably $99. (Rumour has it that LR3 will be announced in the next couple of days.) Personally, I'd do the latter. Lots of improvements since LR 1.

  • When is my RAW file changed? Upon import? Upon viewing? Only after edit list started?

    All:
I now have a "second copy" made in a separate hard drive when I import files from my camera cards. I want an untouched file for possible comparative "developing" or rendering in DxO or PhotoNinja. Might convert everything to DNG someday.
Asking LR to do this at the top of the Import pane is I assume, creates a copy *and* makes NO changes to the RAW data.
OTOH, Lightroom will offer me the image in Camera Raw to view, create, and interpret my edit/develop decisions. But I have been thinking about this and need to ask all of you: Is that CR2 file in my dated Lightroom database folders a changed file in any way from the RAW file while it was still on the card? The decision to hold edit data in sidecar files plays a part in this, right?  External sidecar files means even after edits I can copy the CR2 file and use it in other [RAW]converter's software?
    jonathan7007

Being a "non-destructive editor", Lightroom does not (cannot) change your CR2 files....with one exception, which is when/if you choose to edit the capture time of an image, in which case the changed date is written back into the file header's EXIF field. But apart from that, it is never ever changed.....all edits are stored primarily in the catalog's database, and optionally you can have them written into XMP sidecars. Having the XMP sidecar would allow you to open the raw file in another XMP-capable Adobe program, outside Lightroom, and see the edits applied. Not sure if other non-Adobe raw converters would be able to interpret all of that XMP info.
For non-proprietary raw files (e.g. DNG, Tiff), you can also choose to save the XMP data but in this case it would be written directly into the files header, not into sidecar files. The underlying image data is still, however, unchanged.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 - unable to view RAW files

    Hi.
I have been using Adobe Elements 8 since it came on to the market. I use Canon Cameras and my latest one being a 1Dmkiv.
When I got the Canon 1D I down loaded the appropriate RAW file I think it was 5.6 and followed the instructions and changed the Camera Raw.8bi file and it worked perfect and I was able to view and edit Raw files.
Last week my computer failed and I have had a new hard drive and hence have had to upload all my software. I installed Elements 8 back onto the computer and reinstalled the photograph catalogues I had backed up within Elements 8 before the computer crash.
When the photographs in the catalogues were viewed only JPEG files were visible, the raw files are shown as a a grey negative with a zig zag across them. I thought that I would have to upload again the lates RAW update, which I did and went through all the instructions as given by Adobe. I changed the Raw.8bi file within Elements 8 and I still am unable to view any Raw files within Elements 8. I desperately need access to these files. Any help would be appreciated
    Best regards

Thanks so much for your reply. My problem appeared to be that most of the thumb
nails had lost their links and I had to individually update the thumbnails from within the program. It wasn't a problem
with the RAW file not being updated.

  • I can't open or view RAW files?

I have two Macs. One is an iMac and one is a Macbook. I usually always use my iMac for photo processing and storage. And I use an external hard drive to store all my photos.
Now I recently had to take my macbook with me because I was going out of town and could not transport my iMac. But I was missing a lot of updated things on my macbook, such as my preferences and settings, apps, files, etc, since I rarely use it... and I wanted to transfer all that to my Macbook without the use of tedious uploading and formatting. So I reformatted my macbook by backing it up onto an external drive, erasing the disk, and then migrating my data from my iMac to my macbook. Everything seemed just fine with all my latest settings and files where they should be... until I opened a folder or Bridge and could not view or open any RAW files.
It said I did not have enough access privileges. I am the admin of both my computers, but I do have other accounts for my mom and 2 others for whatever reason (they have never interfered before). I rarely use those accounts and they are NOT admins. But it said that only my mom's account had the privileges to read and write the files on my external hard drive (which has all my photos.) I logged into her account, and sure enough, I could view and open all the RAW files. I can view and open jpegs on my account now, but not any RAW files.
I tried going to "get info" on the external drive, and it said that everyone could read and write. But when I went to individual folders and files, it said only my mom could read and write. And even when changing the permissions so that everyone could, it still didn't work.
I also have the latest software updates... I have tried doing disk utility. And right now it's still going, saying it has 8 hours left, and so far there are hundreds of thousands of problems. It never was like this until just today.
I really need to get this problem solved. I have work to do and without being able to even see my RAW files, yet alone edit them, makes it really hard. I also want to avoid creating a new account because my account now has all my personal stuff... from all my music on my iTunes, to my actions, to my settings, applications, etc. And it would be very hard to redo all of that. So it would be great if I could somehow fix my user privileges.
Does anyone know what to do? I'd appreciate any help from you!

  • Converting RAW files to JPEG on import?

    Is this possible?
I normally shoot RAW, but I've got about 100 shots on my card which I just need JPEGs for. I was just wondering if it was possible to convert them on import rather than import as RAW then convert to JPEG...?

Instead of using Aperture's import feature, go into the Finder and navigate to the folder on your memory card containing the images. Select only the JPGs (the low-res JPGs which your camera automatically creates with each RAW file) and drag them to the project in Aperture. If you have a lot of images and selecting them one by one is a hassle, you can either create an Automator action to select the JPGs, or you can drag all the images including RAW files to Aperture, and then sort by file size to separate the JPGs from the RAWs, and then select/delete the RAW images.
    Hope this helps.

  • Best way to save and view raw files while traveling.  I have dropbox but new ipad user and not sure of best way.

What is the best way to save photos when shooting RAW while traveling.  Would like to save raw files but also view and email from iPad.  I also have dropbox.  Will be in Europe next spring.

Unfortunately, the playback of non-iOS-native video formats (everything except mov / mp4 / m4v) is horrible through Apple TV and it, because of the inherent speed restrictions of Wi-Fi, can't be helped other than:
    - pre-converting your video files to mov / mp4 / m4v before playing them. (THis is the best solution.) For this, you will want to use the absolutely best and fastest video converter, the free(!!!) HandBrake. Don't ever think of paying any money for any video converter - most other titles are way inferior to HandBrake. (See http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/benchmark-excellent-multimedia-converter-handb rake-vs-commercial-apps for more info on this q.)
    - using a VGA or HDMI adapter and connecting your TV directly to the iPad.
In the thread at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18697551?ac_cid=sa123456#18697551 , we've also discussed this problem (AirPlay vs. cabled playback)

  • I can no longer view raw files in bridge - CS4

I have already updated camera raw to view my CR2 files from my Canon 50 D.  All was working well, I have already edited over 1000 photos using bridge to browse.  I used it yesterday and it worked fine.  Shot some more photos, loaded them to my computer and then tried to browse in bridge.  Now bridge will not show me the photos, I get the raw icon only.  I reset preferences.....restarted my computer.....installed updates...... I have no idea why it suddenly stopped working....or how to fix it!  Has anyone had a similar problem?  I am using windows vista.

    cindylou57 wrote:
These same files however do open with my photoshop elements 5 and I have updated the camera raw in this file also.
I would guess that the RAW files were updated  into the wrong folder.  There can be only one ACR in the file, and it must be in correct location.  Re-read the download instructions to make sure you did it correctly.
