Viewer performance with DV clips

Hi,
I'm using Final Cut Pro in an environment where most of my source material is recorded from SDI video sources by an Omneon Spectrum system. The Omneon produces a QuickTime reference movie that references a DV and AIFF file and the DV file contains interleaved audio. The DV and AIFF are moved from the Omneon to a media asset management system and the MOV file is discarded. The DV files are often several GB in size, and are stored on a SAN which is accessed via a Gigabit Ethernet network.
When a DV file (NOT the reference movie file) is dragged from the SAN to the browser and then opened in the viewer and played, the performance is very poor (stutters, stops, etc.). This is true even if the clip is dragged the desktop and played from there rather than from the SAN.
However, when the clip is inserted into a sequence and played in the viewer then no performance issues are encountered.
I've checked all the obvious things like scratch disks and am a little bit stumped!
Has anybody else seen this issue or have any suggestions to what the cause might be?

Thank you for the replies, here is an update and some additional information... (as it turns out, the plot thickens).
Jerry: I no longer had the DV deck that I used to capture (plus it had no readouts anyway), so it took a few days but I found another DV deck with an onscreen display. I can now confirm that the DV tapes in question all have a 48kHz audio sample rate (which confirms what the camera operator told me, so he seems to be off the hook).
*Studio X* & bogiesan: at this point, I do not think that 32kHz audio is implicated here. Today's DV deck re-verification indicates 48kHz audio recorded on these tapes.
To re-iterate... as I pointed out in my original post, the clips play perfectly in sync all the way through using Quicktime Player (which displays 48kHz for the audio in the Inspector panel). The clips also stay in proper sync all the way through when played in Cinema Tools (which also indicates 48.00 Khz).
Only when imported and played in FCP do these exact same media clips exhibit this progressive audio sync slippage (in both the Viewer and Canvas).
Now here's where things get even more interesting: I decided to create a new timeline in FCP, using a framerate of exactly 24fps (rather than 23.98). When I tried to drop the problematic 23.98fps clips on that timeline, FCP asked me if I wanted to change the framerate of the timeline to match the framerate of the clips. I took a chance and said NO. Guess what — the clips now play in proper sync within that timeline, all the way to the end... amazing.
Although this is neither a real solution, nor a full explanation as to what is happening, the fact that the clips only play in sync within an 'exact' 24fps timeline may shed some light as to what is going on within FCP.
Any ideas? Thanks again.

Possible to view presentations with embedded clips on the ipad from an external wifi drive?

first of all I am happy to have joined this community, my name is Chris from Germany.
I am wondering if this setting is possible:
I have bought an external wifi drive (Seagate Satellite Goflex) as well as the iPad4.
I am giving lectures (powerpoint and keynote presentations containing lots of embedded video clips).
Now I would like to show these presentations with my iPad connected to the Wifi drive.
You have to download a special Seagate App on the iPad to be able to see the data on the external wifi drive - I have managed to open the powerpoint files in the App (unfortunately keynote files are not supported by the Seagate App) but when I open them with keynote or goodreader the embedded media will always be removed.
Is this the end of the story or are there any solutions (i.e. with other hardware devices or software)?

I have figured that out:
First of all: you can`t just view presentations on an external device without importing them into your iPad (at least when you plan to show slides with embedded clips) - goodreader, filebrowser, dropbox ... just show you "static" slides.
When you import a ppt-presentation into keynote all the hyperlinks, embedded clips ... are gone - no chance.
But ... in keynote you are able to "embed" video clips when you drag and drop them directly into the slide alowing "copy video into the document" as well (that is "vital") - the files are getting larger but you don`t have to add a clip when you transfer it to another device (i.e. the iPad) - they are "fixed" in the document..
Now seagate goflex has the problem that you just can`t open/view keynote presentations - but there is a solution:
hacksatellite firmware. When you install that you can go into keynote, activate WebDav, import a keynote file from the external drive, edit it and send it back to the external drive - so: import (can`t live without that), show or edit the presentation, copy it again to the external device and delete the presentation in the iPad (to save storage) is the way you can get the optimum from the iPad at the moment.
Correct me if there is any other more comfortable solution.

Problem with multi-clip... viewing angles during playback

Hi everyone, this is my first post here.
I'm having trouble with my multi-clips. I create the clip with three clips, and set it up to view 4 angles at once. However, sometimes during play-back, the viewer will revert to a single view of whichever view is currently selected. How do I keep this from happening? I made sure it's set to "open", and still set on 4-up. I have no idea what's causing it.

Welcome to the forum,
My guess is you've allowed the multiclip to render (causes single frame viewing only)...
I'll usually...dbl-click multiclip in timeline, then set it for open with viewer window button, then single click in an empty space in the timeline.
So, try deleting renders and the second suggestion...see if that helps.
Further, I've set a keyboard shortcut for the 'open' function, so now all I have to do is dbl-click multiclip, hit the '/' key, then click in open space in timeline.

I do this within an Application Module's method, which has an input parameter of type byte[]. This parameter will be the content of the BFILE.
What's the right way for doing that?

Odd, have you disabled caching and indirection? (NoIdentityMap, dontUseIndirection, or alwaysRefresh/disableCacheHits). If so, then this could be the issue.
Otherwise please include the sample code you use to perform this, and verify that you do not have any unusual code in your set/get methods or in descriptor events. Also turn TopLink logging on and include a sample. Also ensure that you do not modify your objects until after registering them in the unit of work, and only modify the unit of work clones.

Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view.
Photos that were synced from a computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing. If you want to remove them all then normally you could just sync an empty folder (in terms of photos) to the iPad, but as you don't want to sync at the moment you can't do that.
You can reset the iPad back to factory settings and start from scratch with it : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings

Two problems with audio clips

Hello,
I'm having two problems with audio clips:
1. When I try to drag a clip from the viewer, I can't do it because it won't let me drag the clip. It only lets me drag the pointer around within the clip.
2. When I drag an audio clip from the browser into the timeline I don't get any audio, just a series of beeps (and yes, my audio media is on-line -- I can listen to it in the viewer, just not the timeline).
What am I doing wrong?

10.1.2.3.0 CP2 Viewer Issue with Managed Links

With this patch workbooks with managed links that were operational passing a blank (optional) parameter now pass 'NULL' as the value. This is bug 7422080. We are in the process of downloading CP5, which is suppose to resolve this issue. This will take time. Can anyone think of a possible workaround? The workaround explained in the bug does not work, which was to edit the parameter, add a default value, then edit it again, remove the default value and save the workbook. I have also tried ' ' as a default value but it just passes ' '. It would be nice to have a workaround until we can install, test and upgrade to CP5.

Null value passed from first sheet will reach as value "" in second sheet. If passNullParameterAsNull="true", then Null value will always be passed as Null to second sheet irrespective of the value of "ShowNullValueAs" in second sheet.

Performances with Crystal Reports (based on BW queries)

Hi,
I've created some Crystal reports based on BW queries, and I'm really interested in performances purposes. The BW queries I created are quick (with neither free characteristics nor hierarchies), and when I use them in a Crystal report, I identify a loss of time in the data extraction (BW --> Crystal), in the Crystal management of the layout and then in the publication to BOE.
To be able to use Crystal on BW queries is very useful, but if the response times are too much important, that's not good...
Is there any customizing to perform to get better performance ? Are there some analysis already performed with Performance point of view ?
If you have any best practice or piece of advice to shorten the response time in Crystal reports, I'm really interested in.

No three point edit with merged clips in Premiere Pro CC 7.2?

Hello Premiere Folk,
I've recently, as of last night, updated to Premiere Pro CC 7.2. I'm currently cutting a feature using merged 5K red raw clips. We were expereicning some weird things but were able to work around them. The update fixed to major problems we were having;
1. Bloating projects going from 808kb to 5mb for no reason.
2. Not being able to perform a match frame on merged clips.
The update fixed these issues, but don't throw on your party hats just yet. Within this update a fuction CRUCIAL to any editor has been taken away after you've performed a merged clip function... THE EDIT! Any time I make an in and out point in my source with a merged clip and an in and out in my timeline and try to do an insert edit via a hotkey, it just edits the entire clip in the timeline starting with a radnom in point! I was able to set an in and out in my source and just edit into the timeline but even that function has been taken away. Adobe please fix this! Yes the match frame with a merged clip works but dont take away editing basics!

This bug is NOT FULLY FIXED. I'm on a tight deadline so i'm not looking very hard online to see if i'm alone - so please forgive me for just posting here...
I'm using CC7.2.1 it's 1/21... very grateful that match frame FINALLY works on merged clips, but, again, this insert/overwrite bug is only PARTIALLY FIXED.
Insert/overwrite with merged clips on 3-point edit now works, but ONLY when cutting in BOTH merged video+audio... if you're just trying to cut in the audio from a merged clip using a 3-point/4-point edit via hotkey, it's a no-go.
I, for example, needed to re-cut in audio under some video with effects on it. So, I unpatched the video source completely and patched source audio tracks 1-4 to the appropriate sequence tracks. Upon hitting insert or overwrite multiple times, nothing responds. The only way to cut anything in from the source (merged clip) was to patch the source video back into the timeline on an unused video track, then cut ALL the tracks from the source in, I then had to delete the video track re-link the now free audio to the original video. Not a big deal, but annoying enough & waste of precious time on tight deadline.
So, yeah, I have a workaround but is still not appropriate to have a core function not work properly. Especially when I'm working with a very complicated timeline.

Dblink + materialized views performance

Hi guys,
Here´s my problem. I have a table with a Lob column and I need to use it remotely
via dblink.
so I created a view changing this column to varchar2(3999) and I was able to acess it
remotely without problems. first problem solved :-)
But performance acessing via DBlink is really bad in this environment, because there´s a lot of queries with joins using this table. So I tried to create a materialized view localy with these data. no sucess.
After that I returned to the first view( the one with varchar2 3999) and changed it to Materialized view and then created a Mview log in this table. so I tried to create a materialized view in my other database acessing data of the first materialized
view . but it failed again.
Any suggestions what can I do ? Maybe exporting a dump every day with this table should solve my problem, but it´s not the best option

With Muti-clip gone from FCP X, is there a new way to sync two cameras with FCP X

I film with two cameras then copy the files from each camera into their own folders. I then use ClipWrap to convert the MTS files into AIC. If the recording was one long contiguous session, many cameras will split the MTS files into 2GB chunks. ClipWrap will Convert Multiple to Span to reassemble them properly. With the AIC .MOV file from ClipWrap, I then use FCP X to Import the MOV files from camera 1 and camera 2. I prefer to do it that way versus using FCP X Import from Camera. I then move the clip from camera 1 onto the timeline in the "primary storyline" (FCP X terminology). I drag the camera 2 clip above the camera 1 clip and line up the audio from the two cameras while that audio is still attached to the video so everything stays in sync. FCP X has a way to automatically sync two soundtracks, but I have not gotten around to that yet. With camera 2's clip attached to camera 1's clip as a "connected clip" above the camera 1 video, I then do an edit to go between the cameras as seems best to me. When the connected clip of camera 2 video sits above the camera 1 video, it will take priority over the camera 1 video. I then split camera 1's video clip taking out sections when I want to go back to the camera 1 view. Of course I can trim camera 2's clips until I get it the way I want it. Since FCP X uses the magnetic timeline concept, and camera 2's clip is "connected" to the camera 1 clip, as you split and trim camera 2's clip, everything will stay in sync across the two camera "tracks". When there is no camera 2 video above the camera 1 video, camera 1 video will be seen. When camera 2 video is above camera 1 video, camera 2 video will be seen instead. With a single editing pass, I can then do all the editing I need to go back and forth between two cameras. The same concept is expandable to other camera "tracks" as long as you are using vertical position in the timeline to determine which camera is seen when. If you would like for it to look like a multi-camera track composit like before FCP X, you can simply select all your clips and make a compound clip out of it. You will then see the multiple camera clips side by side in a single "track". Double click on that "clip" in that "track" to go into the structure and editing individual "tracks" around if needed. Think of a compound track as what a sequence used to do. Anyway, there may be other, and easier ways to do this, but with a single edit through my recording, I can easily and visually cycle back and forth between camera views. It's just that things are called differently now ... and, as of this time, we do not have a single button camera switching function to let us view multiple cameras simultaneously and switch between them using a keystroke for each camera. Still, I have a way to do it, and it has worked very well for me, in fact I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I could do multi-camera in post. Hope this at least gives you one option. Others may have a better way. Best wishes.

How do view ONLY the selected clip?

Is the sequence marker the ONLy way to view a selected clip(s) -- along with the Play-In to Out button?
Often times, I just want to view just one clip in the timeline after I've added effects. If I don't set a sequence marker, PPro plays the entire sequence in the entire timeline of the project, which is more than what I want to view.
Is there any other way, other than setting sequence markers, to view JUST the selected clip(s)?
I thought that, intuitively, selecting a clip (or group of clips) with my pointer would by default playback ONLY the selected clip(s). But I guess not.

I used the work area bar and it did nothing. I played the clip(s) under the work area bar, but it continued playing beyond the bar. Also, when I hit Play again, it started from the beginning of the timeline, not the beginning of the clip under the bar. So, the work area bar seems to only have use when you want to preview something by rendering the tracks under the bar. Otherwise, nothing special. The work area bar is useless to me, unless someone shows me the light.

How to Improve Report View performance

Hi All, i have a webi report which runs about 3 minutes. But when i click on view the report takes about 21 seconds(average) or so to open up. Any ideas on how to improve the report view performance? Does it have anything to do with server load? Any server settings to tweak to speed it up? Any ideas are appreciated.
The requirement is that my web team has to strip off the Business Objects logo etc(using sdk), and display the report in my company web page, so its
looking sort of ugly as the web page is taking about 21 seconds just to display the report.
Some Report statistics:
Report size is about 90 MB, as it has about 300 k rows of data(which i am aggregating using formulas)
Report has about 15 simple division formulas
Report is in Drill Mode. There are about 5 drill filters

I'll assume you are scheduling this report and viewing the instance in ~21 seconds. Is that correct?
We definitely need some environment info to go along with this post. Like Simone said, Product Version, Patch Level, and other OS, Hardware, App Server details would help as well.
There are certain properties of a document that can slow down the rendering of a report but we generally have to look at the logs to determine what part of the report is taking the longest time to process. Assuming this is an instance, I would be curious to know if it is quicker to come up if you immediately view it a second time?
If you were to turn on a trace, you would see a number of lines like this:

The numbers at the end are how long the function took to run. Generally the function gives us an idea of what the engine was doing.
When evaluating performance issues, you can occasionally find a function that is taking long to run within the logs and based on the function and module names, it can sometime lead you to the reason it is taking longer than expected.
Another good test might be to run a very basic report to see how long it takes to come up. Even a report without a datasource would suffice as that will give you your baseline time on how long it takes to load the viewer, convert the WID file to XML and send it up through the application server to your browser. If a test report takes 15 seconds to view, then you are really only looking at 6 seconds for this other report.
Hope this helps and gets you started. More environment info would help take it further.

I am doing a lot of analyses with 10.9.2 on a late 2013 MBP, and these analyses generally last hours or days. I observed that Maverick is slowing them down considerably for some reasons after few hours of computations, making it impossible for me to work with this computer...
