Viewing a downloaded PDF file

Every time I get a PDF file sent to me, I only see the first page and I can't even print it out. I guess I should be setting up something as my default to view PDF files but I'm not sure how. Help!!!!! The pdf file in question was 12 pages.

Hi Matthew;
Welcome to the discussions. I will presume that the pdf document opened in Preview. At the top of the Preview window, just beneath the file name is a tool bar. Click on the button that reads "Drawer" and you should see thumbnail representations of the complete document show up on the right side of the main window. You can move up and down through the document simply be using the up and down arrows on your keyboard.
Alternately, you should be able to use the Previous/Next buttons or the Back/Forward buttons in the toolbar to move between pages of your document.
Another alternative would be to download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader available at http://www.adobe.com

  • Cannot view or download PDF files from secure web site with Reader X.

    Ran into a similar problem when Reader X first came out (Reader 9 had been working fine).  Only a blank window was displayed, but a work around was to "Save As" and use the view option to display and print the document. I recently had to replace my modem. Since then, that work around option is no longer available; it errors out saying that the file could not be downloaded.  We are using IE9 and Windows 7.  I tried another browser, Google Chrome, with the same negative results. Also, I got the same results on another secure website.  I have deleted and downloaded another copy of Reader X (10.1.1) and checked for updates, run the Repair program, and confirmed that Protected Mode and AdobePDF.dll are both enabled.  I looked at my Internet settings, too but found nothig that would obviously
    interfere with Reader.

    Usually, this message occurs with Windows. First time I've seen it with OS X. Looking into it.

  • I am unable to view or download PDF files using Firefox that used to open automatically.

    Reading some of the other comments on the support site I wonder if in my haste in making sure I didn't get that malware virus if I didn't perhaps accidentally delete a necessary plug-in for Adobe Reader?  I'd appreciate any advice.  Thank you!

    If you use extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extension) like <i>Adblock Plus</i> or <i>NoScript</i> or <i>Flash Block</i> that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]

    Hi BalusC,
    thanks for your immediate response.
    as you correctly pointed out its not XLS but a csv file that works fine.
    I just tried my luck for XLS file, but as you said it does not work for XLS file as well. original file contained images which were lost
    after the download and garbage characters got inserted in.
    I will have a look at the code you have given link of.
    but for reading/writing I am using inputstream/outputstream but doing that through reader and writer.
    like this
    br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(new FileInputStream(
    fileName.toString()), charsetName));
    and for writing
    outputStream = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(
    response.getOutputStream(), charsetName));
    you mean to say I should not use reader writer?

  • Mavericks 10.9.1. Freezes or trackpad becomes slow and unresponsive when viewing downloaded PDF files in Preview.Help!

    The earlier post was my first attempt at posting and had some typos. Repeated with typos corrected.
    I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 with preinstalled Mavericks.I now have the 10.9.1 update. Almost from the time of purchase in Nov '13, I have been experiencing freezes and slow & unresponsive trackpad. I have more or less narrowed this symptom as happening when viewing downloaded PDF files. The only option is to force eject, if available or shut down. I spoke to Support as I thought it was a RAM issue and they told me that in Mavericks RAM showing almost full was normal as it uses RAM differently. They took me through some resets and cleaning up which has helped a little but freezing stll happens. This never happened with my Macbook AIr running Lion. Any suggestions?

    Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late '13-Mavericks 10.9.1
    Macbook Air 13" Mid '11-Lion
    Macbook Aluminium 13" Late '08-Snow Leopard

    So a PDF file that you can view in Preview on your MBA causes your new MBP to lock up and/or slow down. Is this right? Also you say more or less narrowed down to PDFs with Preview but does the computer exhibit this behavior with other programs and if so under what conditions? And how much free hard drive space do you have?
    Viewing memory use in Mavericks is different than with previous versions of the OS. Today it looks like we need to pay attention to what Apple calls Memory Pressure which is gauged by the bar graph in Activity Monitor and to the Virtual Memory being used. When the memory pressure graph bar gets too high it turns red and that's bad news. Looking at how much memory is being used doesn't help - I have a 16GB computer and with almost nothing running it still shows something like 15.79GB used but the memory pressure graph is just a think green line. So unless you see the memory pressure bar turning red lets not worry about memory usage at the moment.
    If among the things AppleCare had you do was reinstall Mavericks then I recommend a trip to the Apple store - and take a problem PDF file with you to demonstrate.

  • Download PDF files instead of viewing them within Safari?

    I would like to automatically download PDF files instead of having to view them within Safari.
    I have disabled Acrobat as the default reader and now Safari has switched to using Preview. However, I cannot find a way to also disable Preview to allow the PDF file to be downloaded instead of displayed within a Safari window.
    Anyone have any ideas on how to do this seemingly simple task?

    It's amazing to me that simply asking Safari to default to auto download a PDF is so arcane. It's incredible that Apple doesn't have a Safari preference for this very simple action!
    The Terminal and Onyx methods recommended above are just ways of accessing a setting for Safari that Apple hasn't added to Safari Preferences. As I understand it, settings like this are built into Safari - they just aren't readily user-accessible. This is why programs like Onyx and Safari Enhancer exist, to open up "hidden" features and settings.
    I imagine Apple's developers debate these things, trying to decide what would be simpler to leave out to avoid complexity and what confusion (but allow third-party or Terminal methods to access) and which would be better added to the regular Preferences settings.
    Since this is a feature you'd like to see in Safari Preferences, I'd recommend submitting this as feedback to Apple.
    In the meantime, though, I'd consider it a good thing that there are built-in ways to get the setting that you prefer. Personally, I don't find the default settings such a hindrance. They're intended to help the "average" user (the new Mac user, the non-technical user, etc.) who wants a PDF file to just open, without having to understand how to work with it. For the more savvy user, there are multiple methods of downloading and/or opening PDFs. I'm rather like you - I prefer to download PDFs (in which case I use the Control-click method if I notice the link is to a PDF) or sometimes I allow the PDF to open in Safari, then Control-click on the open PDF and choose the option to open in Acrobat Reader. I find the latter method even smoother than downloading and then opening, in fact. If I decide it's a file I want to keep, I save it to my hard drive; otherwise I just close it.

  • I can't view orf download pdf (adobe) files

    I cannot view or download pdf (adobe) files

    TO MARK,
    To tell you the truth, until you asked the question, I never heard of Preview.  In trying to open the AP, I saw that it had never been opened and I couldn't open it when I tried today.  Can you shed any light on this?

  • Opening downloaded pdf files using Adobe instead of in Safari

    I prefer to use full-feature Adobe software to view downloaded pdf files instead of Safari. How do I keep Safari from opening them in the browser and instead automatically open Adobe Reader when the search engine finds a pdf file?

    I have just installed Adobe Reader 9. I am getting frequent system hangs (cannot do anything without cold re-boot) when using the product, in particular when using forms documents provided by Companies House, a UK government agency.

  • How can I rotate view of a pdf file, like in earlier versions?

      How can I rotate view of a pdf file, like in earlier versions?

    Adobe Reader Touch (Windows Store app with "Modern" UI) for Windows 8 is a relatively new product, which was introduced in December 2012.  Adobe Reader XI, X, or older is a completely separate product - a traditional desktop app with classic UI.  The desktop version has been available in the market for 20 years (!!) and it does not share any common components with Adobe Reader Touch.
    Adobe Reader Touch does not support page (view) rotation yet.
    For Windows 8, you can download and install Adobe Reader XI from the link below.
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
    For Windows RT, you can use Microsoft Reader (built-in PDF viewer), instead.

  • Will not allow me to download PDF files (I have to go to a non-firefox exployer to get it). Do I need a plug-in?

    I cannot seem to download PDF files. When I attempt to download the file, it just shows me a blank white screen. In order for me to download a PDF file, I have to use my regular Internet Explorer.
    Is there a plug-in or something in Firefox that I need in order to view PDF files?

    When you installed Foxit Reader, did you opt out of the Ask Toolbar installation?
    If not, click the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Extensions and remove it in there. Then try again.
    If it doesn't work, download Adobe Reader from here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/?promoid=BUIGO (disable Foxit Reader in the Extensions menu first).

  • How do I insert a downloadable pdf file?

    That's my question... simple I hope!
    How do I insert a downloadable pdf file?

    On your web page select the text ot the object you want to link the pdf-file to.
    Then open the Inspector window (View -> Show Inspector or alt-cmd-I) and open the Hyperlink tab (marked by the blue arrow).
    Select "enable as Hyper link" and set the "Link to" selector  to "a file".
    In the File chooser select your pdf-file.
    If your file is large, you might set the selector to "an external link". Then you enter the URL and it is would be your responsebility to upload the file to its site.

    Hi,
    Which web browser are you using to view the PDF? Safari 5.1.8
    When you open the PDF in Adobe Reader add-in you will either see a floating toolbar
    http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-5224223-317859/430-90/floating +toolbar.JPG
    or a normal toolbar
    http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-5224223-317860/450-11/normalto olbar.JPG
    both the toolbars have save button, use the button to save the file locally. I do not see these toolbars. I do, however see this
    and it works! Thanks
    Hope this will help you.
    Thanks

  • Downloading PDF files in OS X Mavericks

    After upgrading to OS X Mavericks, I find that Adobe cannot open downloaded PDF files.

    Felicia clearly stated that she had no issue viewing PDF files from the Internet within Safari. Rather, Reader was newly borking on the files that were direct downloads into the filesystem, or came as email attachments. A very different issue from plug-ins.
    Felicia, if you had opened an Internet PDF in a browser plug-in, you must use the save feature in the plug-in, not File > PDF Export, or File > Save As... These approaches will create a munged PDF that will cause Reader to pop that dialog you saw. You must use the Save feature provided by the browser plug-in. This is on a hover-bar that appears slightly above the bottom of your browser window with the PDF displayed.
    This may also explain the corrupted PDF email attachments too.
    Ok. So you have reinstalled Acrobat Reader per CF McBlob's pointer and everything is messed up.
    Drag Acrobat Reader to the trash and empty the trash again. Sigh. Now get a fresh copy from the Adobe consumer site. Once you download it, exit Safari. Install Acrobat Reader. See if you can see Internet PDF again in Safari. Follow my advice above on how to correctly save viable PDF files. See if your issues are solved. And eject the Acrobat Reader installer from your Desktop.

  • Corrupted content error when trying to download .pdf file from one website.

    Unable to download .pdf file from a website, but IE8 provided the download without hesitation.
    Both v7 and v8 produced the same message:
    "Corrupted content error"
    The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because an error in the data transmission was detected.
    This may be a particular website problem, or it may be common to the particular industry segment and their protocols.
    I have followed the help leads and examined the profile for Firefox as used in this instance. Nothing untoward seemed to pop out as a causal factor.

    Reworked some of the javascript for our webserver and fixed the problem.
