Viewing all thumbnails in a folder?

I want to be able to look at all the thumbnails of images in a folder which in itself contains several sub-folders, rather than having to go into each subfolder to view the images. Is this possible? Elements 11.

many thanks, now for another dumb question, how do I asign a common tag?
Not a dumb question, really. (Your original question was not)
When you create a folder which is meant to hold several subfolders, it's because all the subfolders will have a common property.
Of course, using date based folders and subfolders is totally superfluous in the Organizer : the dates are entered in the database automatically and you can select any period with the usual tools.
Say your want to create a 'vacation' master folders with many subfolders by countries. If you think 'properties' instead of file location, you'll assign a keyword 'vacation' and another one for each country for each import batch. Easy to retrieve either by country or simply by vacation. Easy to apply the 'vacation' or 'country' to a whole batch of pictures at import time. There are several convenient workflows to maintain a coherence between the tags and the folder structure; they rely on the tagging of pictures in a subfolder at import time instead of tagging after the folder tree has been created.
In a situation where tagging has not been applied at import time, you can create the common tag ('vacation') and apply it successively to all files of each subfolder. It's quicker than one can imagine.
We can discuss the choice of keeping a coherence between folder structure and database structure, there are pros and cons. But if you decide to be coherent while taking advantage of the advantages of the database tagging, you should keep both systems coherent at import time. Much less work afterwards.

  • 2 iphoto libraries? and viewing all thumbnails but can't view landscape

We have 2 users set up on the computer and I have recently noticed that the iphoto libraries in each of the users/pictures folder don't seem to be the same size. Are these truly 2 different libraries based on which account our photos were imported into?
AND, my recent imports into iPhoto seems to be behaving 'funny'. I can view all the thumbnails, but, when I try to open any landscape photos, the picture flashes, and then I only see a black screen. The portrait photos in the same event are viewing without issue? Any ideas?

iPhoto is based on a database. Once you import/copy the photos into the library you can add a photo to multiple items, i.e. albums, books, calendars, without having to duplicate the original image file. All management of the photo is done within iPhoto and it's database. All access to photos for use in or out of iPhoto is done from within iPhoto. There's no need to get into the library via the Finder.
The following is from one of Terence Devlin’s posts on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It’s the definitive treatise on the subject.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Accessing the iPhoto Library Folder directly has never been supported in any version of iPhoto.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For Users of 10.5 and later
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
For users of 10.4 and later ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of the above are a: faster and b: Safer than rooting around in the old Library Folder.

  • How to view all files in subfolders?

I have a folder (call it folder A) and inside that about 60 subfolders with 5-50 files in each. Is there anyway I can view all the files in Folder A in the 'flat' ie in one window so I can sort them by creation date, modification etc (obviously, I want to do this without actually moving the files)

    ????? ???1 wrote:
Thanks! What I really want is creation date
    OK, use this:
cd ~/Desktop; ls -RU -alF | open -f
This lists the creation date rather than the mod' date.
Here you have to replace Desktop with A (or whatever); keep everything else the same, assuming the folder is sitting in your home directory and isn't a child of some other folder in your home directory (if it is a child of some other folder, see the last two examples below).
    NOTES
If the folder you want to search has a space in the name, you're going to need to add an escape character - that's a backslash \ - before the space:
    e.g.,
Suppose the folder you want to search is in your home directory and is called "My Docs", you'd use
cd ~/My\ Docs; ls -RU -alF | open -f
Whereas if the folder was just called "MyDocs", you'd just use
cd ~/MyDocs; ls -RU -alF | open -f
Suppose My Docs is inside your Documents folder, use
cd ~/Documents/My\ Docs; ls -RU -alF | open -f
Suppose My Docs is inside Work which is inside Documents, use
cd ~/Documents/Work/My\ Docs; ls -RU -alF | open -f

  • How can I view all my images as thumbnails without folders?

I want to clean out my photos so I can start organizing them on my Macbook Pro Retina, but I can't figure out how to just view all of the original image files as thumbnails. They're all split up into confusing and some seemingly identical folders. Is there a way for me to just view all of my original image files at one place in finder so I can effectively clean them out?

You can use a Finder > Smart Folder and set the location and criteria, there might even be All Images on the left Finder window sidebar

  • View all contents of a Parent folder in Bridge cs5

Is it possible to view all contents of sub folders in a parent folder?
    Example:
Ive got a folder called "stock photos", and inside i have sub-folders: "airplanes", "alien", "animals", "backgrounds", "Beach"... etc to organize the contents. Is it possibe in bridge to view all containing photos as thumbnails at once? It seems like adobe would have thought of this already and have it as a feature in Bridge.
Ive got one work-around in mind, but it would take some extra work re-organizing the (probably thousands) of stock photos my company has accumulated over the years. The work around would be - keep all stock photo files in one folder, but tag them with metadata, and use the filter panel to narrow down my options. I mention this because i know someone will post this as a solution.
What do you all do to best organize your stock photos?
    Thanks!

You mean see the contents of the child folder, I guess.
It is as simple as this: view>show items from subfolders.
I recommend taking a look at the help files: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/creativesuite/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-737 1a.html

  • Is there a way to view all the messages in a folder containing subfolders?

I use Mac Mail for my work email (becuase I hate entourage...), but the way it displays messages within folders is really inconvenient. Let's say I have a folder for a client (Brand XYZ) and within that folder I have subfolders (Campaign A, Project B, Other). If I want to view all the emails for the highest folder (Brand XYZ) there doesn't seem to be an option to view all the messages for that folder without going through each subfolder and viewing its contents.
    How I see it:
Brand XYZ - only generic emails that don't pertain to a specific topic
Campaign A - only emails regarding this campaign
Project B - only emails regarding this project
How I want to see it:
Brand XYZ - ALL EMAILS; generic emails that don't pertain to a specific topic & emails within subfolders
Campaign A - only emails regarding this campaign
Project B - only emails regarding this project
Is there any way of doing this??? Thanks for the help!

No, you can't mix "all" and "any" filters. You can only select one. I haven't had a lot of success using boolean for filtering. Only thing I can say is try it. If it works for you in the Mail search window, it should work in the smart mailbox search.
For creating search criteria filters, only thing I can suggest is think about what you want it to show. Then look at the criteria given in smart mailboxes and think about what the best way to achieve it would be using the any or all. You may need to create seperate SMs for different criteria. As I said, you can put smart mailboxes in a smart mailbox folder, but you can put a SM in a local mailbox or within another SM.
You could also use SM in conjunction with the local mailboxes. If you are moving messages to seperate local mailboxes, you could just use the SM to view all messages from a particular client. That would make more since than moving the message to a main local mailbox and then copying them to subfolders so they can be viewed from both. The big downside to that is duplicate messages, but if it works for you then that's OK.

  • Show Thumbnail of all files in a folder and its subfolders

    Hi Guys,
I want to set the Filter Panel (Adobe Bridge CS3) to "show all items in this folder and all its subfolders" through Java script on windows.
From UI it is possible by clicking on icon buton present in the filter panel and content panel shows the files from current folder as well as from its subfolders.
Can any one suggest some Java script to do it?

  • Using arrow keys to view one thumbnail at a time in the Faces corkboard.

In the faces window, you can wave the mouse over a picture on the corkboard and see all the pictures but the effect can be hard to control. In iPhoto '09 you could, just park the mouse over the corkboard picture and use the right- and left-arrow keys to view one thumbnail at a time. This does not work in iPhoto '11... any way to re-establish this behavior?

ctrl+a will select all emails currently shown. In delete folder just select mails using ctrl+a and delete them using delete button on your keyboard, or from context menu.

  • View just thumbnails of a slideshow

My wife is putting together a 240-image slideshow of our wedding in iPhoto, and having the single row of thumbnails with a big image below is really difficult to arrange the slides. I've been searching, but I can't find a way to just view the thumbnails (multiple rows), rather than the big image as well.
    Is that possible?

    ericohly:
No, it's not possible to see more than one row of thumbnails in the slideshow mode. The only way to get more slides in the tray would be to reduce the height of the tray so that more photos can be fit to the window width.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • "View All RSS Articles" Sometimes Stops All Pages from Loading

    Hi!
I'd like some help with this:
Sometimes, when I view a whole lot of RSS articles in one tab, the content stops loading after one hundred or so articles have come in. After this, no pages will load -- not even a local html file in my home directory.
These message appears in the console:
    2007-01-17 13:10:37.996 Safari[6634] * -[NSCFString stringByAppendingString:]: nil argument
    (event handler):Null value
Memory and CPU don't seem unusually high. I can still close tabs, export bookmarks and do other things with the menus. I just can't load a new page.
Quitting and re-starting Safari is the only way I have found around this problem.
    Scott

Wow... thanks for trying out those feeds that I suspected. It's a wierd problem, because it does not occur consistently.
I reproduced the error by viewing all RSS articles in my news feeds bookmarks folder, and I used "Start Profiling with Sample" on the Debug menu to create a .sample file, and I stopped profiling when the error recurred a few seconds later.
This produced a ten-thousand-line-long file that may contain useful information.
    Here's the console log section:
    2007-01-20 16:42:11.587 Safari[227] starting sample tool
    2007-01-20 16:42:39.834 Safari[227] * -[NSCFString stringByAppendingString:]: nil argument
    2007-01-20 16:42:44.918 Safari[227] sample tool output written to /tmp/SafariSample-2007-01-20-164211.sample
    The file is at
    http://homepage.mac.com/eyesquash/tmp/SafariSample-2007-01-20-164211.sample
I also have excerpted my news feeds bookmarks folder, so if you like, you can try importing it into Safari and loading all of it at once (a bit over 1,000 articles). It's here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/eyesquash/tmp/news%20feeds.html
I will try this from another account of my machine. I'll also try it from another account with Safari running in its messed-up state on my main account.
You know, this would not bother me much at all if it weren't such a nice feature when it works. Most Apple things are like that for me: great when they work, and they usually work.

  • Opening all folders in a folder

In OS9 you could open and close all folders in a folder with key strokes. It's been years since I did it, now I have to do it in OS10.3.9 to show all files on disc's I'm creating. Sure could use a little help.

You mean using List view, do a Select All (Command-A) and then hit the right arrow ? Select All again if needed and right arrow again. Left arrow closes all the selected ones at once.
Or did you have another view in mind ?

  • How can I view all my apple map pushpin Points of Intrest and pictures at once?

Been trying to find a way to view all my Apple Maps Points of Interest pushpins all at once on the map screen.  As I drive along routing, or when I zoom in and out of map areas.  Saved bookmarks shows a long list, but I can't figure out how to just view all the pushpins on the map, so I can access my favorite locations and notes as I drive or plan a trip.
Maybe create a map pushpin folder to save only pictures related to the saved map bookmarks.  And save on phone or skydrive?  I still just go by memory.  But the list, notes and scenes are getting really numerous.  RV campsites, fishing, biking, skiing, services, phone signal, shopping, wifi, laundry, jobs, pictures, and much more.
I have an old HP mini that I like and use with my iphone 4.  Have no interest or extra money to be upgrading my devices every time the software/bloatware updates overload otherwise perfectly good phones and laptops.  Hope to be able to share with others how to have their phones and computers work for them, instead of the other way around.
Might stay with iPhone and even buy an ipad if they become more univerally compatible, or switch to all windows devices.  Not too happy with PCs bloatware programming these days either.  My old windows 98 laptop runs some really powerful programs.  Wonder how many people would buy Jeeps and such vehicles, if they could not easily drive them on regular city streets or highways?

I am a long time iTunes user but a new MacBook owner! I keep the majority of my music files on an external hard drive.   I'm trying to view all those files on my MacBook through iTunes.   With windows you would go to : File/Add To Library, and iTunes would add all your selected files to your music library BUT WOULD NOT COPY THEM TO YOUR HARD DRIVE.  In other words, if the external hard drive was connected, you could listen, drag/drop, and edit the files.   When I tried the same thing with my new MacBook... it actually started coping the files to my MacBook harddrive.  I don't want that, it's millions and millions of mp3's that I don't want to keep on my computer, only my external hard drive.   Can anyone help?    I'm sure it's something easy, I'm just so new to the Mac world.   Being an iPhone owner for many many years I'm picking up things fast, but this is getting the best of me!  Help !

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • Change view options for a single folder

I use the Finder exclusively in "column view".
I have a folder that contains some huge (> 1 GB) .tiff files. If I navigate to one of these files, the Finder tries to generate a preview image, but this typically takes more than a minute. I want to turn off the "Show preview column" for this folder (but only for this folder). Under Finder>View>View options I can hide the preview column, but this change applies to my entire file tree. I can't find a way to restrict the change to a single folder.
Note - if you work in "list view", the view options menu gives you a choice of making changes to "this window only" or "all windows". Not so in column view.

Probably the best option is to put that folder in list view. When you navigate to the folder containing that folder in your normal Column view, you can hold down the Command key and double click the folder. It will then open in a new window and display in List view. If you use this folder frequently, drag it to the Dock, when you select it from there it will open in List view. I have a number of things that I prefer to open in List or Icon view, rather than my usual Column view, but don't want to clutter up my Dock, so I keep aliases to some of them on my Desktop, and some in my home folder (depending on how often I access them). The ones on the Desktop open in the preferred form with a double click, the ones in my home folder open the way I want with a Command double click.
