Viewing Aperture 3 Library from iLife/iWork Programs

I am unable to view photos in my Aperture 3 library from the Media Browser of any of the iLife/iWork Programs. I would appreciate any help in resolving this problem.
Thanks -
Dudley Warner

There was a software update to make the iLife apps compatible with Aperture 3. Did you check your Software Update since installing Aperture?

  • How to view aperture library from another computer on network?

    Hi,
I'd like to simply view (not edit) my aperture library from another computer on my home network. The aperture library resides on a mac pro, and I'd like to see the images on a macbook pro to show family members. On the surface, this seems like a simple concept - as Apple TV can do this with home sharing. Further, itunes can share it's library in this manner.  Is this possible?
    thank you,
    T

You don't mention which OS you're using and I understand that Lion has changed some of the sharing features but  what you are looking to do is doable.
Be warned that accessing an Aperture library over a network is slow and definitely not something you want to do if editing except in an emergency and you want to make triple sure that only one user is accessing the library at a time.  But I regularly access libraries over wireless when I'm to lazy to walk across the house and need to check somthing out.
If you are using Snow Leopard go into System preferences->Sharing and tune on file sharing on the the Mac Pro. If you have the same user name on both systems you should have no problem accessing the library from the MBP.
If you're on Lion, you'l need to lok up how to enable file sharing. I haven't swithced so I can;r help you there.
    good luck

  • Aperture Library and iLife Media Browser - Showing Deleted MobileMe Gallery

I'm currently using Aperture 3.1 and iLife '09 and just noticed that when I try to access the Aperture Library from say iPhoto or Keynote that the list of folders contains two MobileMe folders with my name, one of which contains dupicates of two of my gallery's. Now I deleted all of my MobileMe gallery's to see if I could fix this, but it still shows a MobileMe folder and two gallery's that no longer exist. I even logged out of MobileMe in Aperture, but still in the iLife Media browser the non-existent gallery's are still shown. I even tried deleting all previews and re-generating in Aperture, to see if the sharing information would be updated, but still these phantom gallery's persist. I guess this doesn't cause me any problems, but I would just like to fix it and wondered if anyone else had seen this and knew of a solution? Thanks.

  • How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?

How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?
I used to store my pictures on an external hard drive using the latest version of Aperture. Now I tried migrating my Aperture library to Photos. However, after a short moment an error message popped up telling me that "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. Photos does not have the necessary permissions...".
My external HDD doesn't need any permission repairs nor is the system prohibited to read from or write to it.
Thanks for any advice in advance!

My guess is that the encryption is the problem for the new app.

  • Photo preview blank when browsing Aperture Library from iPhoto

    Hello to everyone,
I need to import in iPhoto some photo of my Aperture's Library, but when I open it from iPhoto I can see all the pictures exept the lastest that I've imported in the Aperture Library (that have been taken with a Canon EOS 550D with RAW format): I see a blank icon (that can I select and import in my iPhoto library) instead its preview.
In Aperture the Canon EOS 550D RAW format works correctly, but I can't see the preview of the image in the browser under iPhoto.
Can anyone help me solving this problem?
I have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 (with all the updates) and the lastest versione of both iPhoto and Aperture.
    Thanks.
    Andrea

    Hi Terence,
thanks for the reply, but I've already regenerated all my previous (the entire library), but with no success.. I still continue to see a blank icon browsing the Aperture Library from iPhoto.
But I see that each time I enter in Aperture, it alway restart processing library (but only for some photos).. when it finish that process, I close Aperture and when I enter in it again, it restart processing the same photos.. again and again and again
    Any other suggestion?
    Regards.

  • Opening Aperture Library from my Drobo (Very Slow)

I have a Firewire Drobo, which I love, and I use Aperture on my Mac. I currently have my primary Aperture Library (~125GB) on my Drobo. I have been experiencing an issue with slowness when opening my Aperture library from my Drobo. It takes several minutes (5-6) to open my library from the Drobo and am wondering if 1) others are experiencing excessive slowness when opening their Aperture Library from a Drobo and/or 2) if I would be better off just using a regular firewire drive for my Aperture library and using the Drobo just for my Aperture Vault and not my primary library?
It seems that this issue has gradually gotten worse as my library has increased in size. When the library was 50GB it seemed to open pretty quickly, but the bigger it gets the longer it takes to open. Once it is open it is fairly snappy, although if I am reading and writing a lot of data to the Drobo simultaneously I will see some slowness sometimes. This machine is the current generation of 24" iMac with 4GB of RAM. My Drobo is filled with 3 - 1TB Western Digital Green drives and 1 500GB WD Green drive.
Would love to hear if others are having a similar experience and any ideas for better performance.
    Thanks!
    Guy

I don't think the FW is the problem, although it might be
I was keeping my Aperture library on a Drobo and ALL of the images were referenced and not managed.
And like you, it became progressively slower (5-10-15-20 minutes to open) and then became corrupted on more than one occasion. After the last episode and after substantial heroic efforts (48 hours of rebuilding), I was able to recover the library. Once recovered, I moved the library to my internal drive and left all of my images as referenced on the Drobo. The library since the move has been fine. I have occasional images which appear to become corrupted on the Drobo (not recognizable by Aperture or Photoshop or Preview), that fortunately, I simply replace the RAW file in the appropriate location from a back up copy of the RAW file and everything is fine.
This has been discussed with Data Robotics and after several weeks I still don't have an answer from an email I sent providing all the requested information.
Bottom Line. Place your referenced your images on Drobo, but make sure you have at least two other additional backup of your original datafiles. Move your library to some other drive immediately!!
My suspicion is Aperture and Drobo RAID system do not work well together and Data Robotics has been disappointing in terms of technical response to inquiries.
I have two Drobo boxes and they are used daily, but at this point I always, always always have at least two back ups on whatever is on the Drobo. My dream was it would be a highly or super reliable copy of my data, but at this point, I really do not consider them to be even a reliable copy, given the random corruption issues and Data Robotics poor support.
I am investigating alternative large data systems and the most interesting thus far is the WD Share gigabit system. Data Robotics says that they only certify one other FW drive and it HAS to be a Data Robotic drive and not another vendors. FW is supposed to support up to 16 devices according to Apple so there is a huge disconnect. I do use several drives downstream from my 2nd Gen Drobo units, I mount/unmount religiously and have not had obvious problems with other drives.
Having said that, I have not had another corruption problem since December 26 or so, but I also have not looked at every RAW file of the 40,000 stored on the Drobo. I figure I will find more, but will replace them as I find them.
    Regards, Steven

  • Accessing aperture library from the finder

I'm new to aperture and struggling. I upload my photos but can't see my aperture library from the finder. I shoot in RAW and want to do a batch save as jpegs. I'd like to create a folder within my project but it won't see my aperture library. I'm trying to read through the manual but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Help!

As I learned, this only uploads the previews, not the raw file that you see when using aperture. This means any modifications you've made won't be applied.
Sorry, but that's wrong. The previews contain ALL modifications you've applied as long as they're up to date. That's pretty much the point of previews.
I've seen a lot of confusion these past few days regarding the Aperture workflow. I think it's pretty important to understand how Aperture works before jumping in. As Terence mentioned the whole point of the app is to manage everything within its database. Forget the Finder. Even if you use referenced files - as I do - Aperture still should be command central.
There's also quite a few posts that seem to mistake RAW for an actual format. It isn't. RAW is just sensor data that needs to be interpreted. It's very powerful because it allows much wider editing of parameters that would otherwise be hard to modify after the fact (exposure, white balance etc). But you don't want to upload RAW files to the web because 1) they wouldn't be compatible and 2) they'd either look pretty dull or be interpreted differently from what you intended.
I hope I'm not coming off like a blowhard here. But reading the manual and understanding the why and how of Aperture (or any other DAM) is the only way to get the most out of your purchase. This isn't iPhoto with more stuff - there's a very different paradigm here.

I may be misreading what you are trying to do but you don't import libraries via the import window. You use File->Import->Library..
If this doesn't resolve your problem post back with more detail of what you are doing and what is happening.

  • How to migrate Aperture library from PowerMac to MacPro

I copied my Aperture library from my old PowerMac G5 (10.5.8) to my new MacPro (10.6.2) but Aperture on the MacPro could not display any of the images included in the the library. It properly displayes the previews but instead of an image in the main window it always shows the info unsupported image format. Only the images that are references to files outside the library can be displayed.
So what is the proper way to move an Aperture library from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac?
    Thanks in advance, Martin

If it's a managed library you can just copy it: It's that easy.
If it's a referenced library it's a lot trickier, as you can move the library and not the images.
Which do you have? It's probably easiest in the case of a referenced library to consolidate it, move it, and then move it back to referenced, if your library is of a moderate size.
But there are details on how to do this in the Aperture documentation; I suggest you have a read for the best practices on this.

  • Viewing Aperture library items in iPhoto as workflow help

I wanted to view my Aperture library jpegs in iPhoto without opening Aperture. The reason for this is to use iPhoto to review my pictures and to open in an external editor from iPhoto. We use Fireworks in designing web sites and newsletters. I did not want to save to another folder which takes up space. The workflow requires the use of Fireworks, crop out what we need from or graphics/pictures and place in the final work for Dreamweaver.
I opened the Aperture library content and dragged the image folders to iPhoto. It did take the pictures and gave a notice for the files that were not imported. These were jpeg files, not the raw. Advantage is that the Aperture library is now the one resource for our workflow. I can switch from FireWorks to Photoshop when needed. We did not try this with the Raw files, but I suppose that could be done too. Opening the raw in PS would be helpful to some workflows.
I thought this was a good tip. It has saved us quite a bit of time and is easy to use.

I'm not sure I understand. If you're using iPhoto to review and edit jpg files you've pretty much nuked any reason to use Aperture at all. It also means that edited copies of your images are not tracked as versions and aren't backed up in the vault. Can you explain a little more what your workflow is?
I'm do not want versions tracked in Aperture in this case. I want samples of textures or parts of image available for use in designing other graphics. We are in the graphics studio and want to open files in FireWorks, crop/marque out parts and paste to another FireWorks file. I have iPhoto set up to open externally in Fireworks. Think of it as needing 'clip art' out of picture in the library.
What we are doing is designing banners for web sites and newsletters. I might want a horizon/sunset only as a background to blend into the banner. I have iPhoto open already along with Fireworks and Dreamweaver. No need to have Aperture or any other program open now. iPhoto has the jpegs..... click to open in FireWorks, marque, copy and past the parts I want into the banner design.
Before that I had to have a resource folder of jpegs. The Aperture library can now store jpegs and access them from iPhoto. I have to hunt quickly through hundreds of image we have store for each texture and different subjects for these banner creations.
Hope this helps. We just need small parts of any given image. This was a good solution. I'm sure there are others too.

  • Restoring aperture library from an external hard drive?

I have a major issue with my aperture library. It crashed completely and it turns out that the back up I have on my time machine was corrupted because of a hard disk error. I found this out after buying a new mac and while trying to migrate the old library to the new mac. I kept getting error message -36.
The situation is now as follows:
    - I have the full Aperture library on an external hard disk that I recovered from my crashed mac
    - I can acces and copy the indivial pictures via the master folder, but cannot copy the entire library. If I try this it give me an error (-36)
    - I can see the individual photo files via (click, 'view content'), and can copy them in groups, but not as a whole. It turns out that If I try to copy the master folder, there are some corrupt images there and the copy exercise then quits automatically. It does not allow me to delete the corrupt images.
    - when i try to restore the the library via aperture (so opening it with aperture) it keeps saying that my 'permissions' are not set correctly.
Does anyone have an idea to copy the library (24gb worth of photos) without having to go in and copy group by group eliminating the corrupt files?
There must be some way to rebuild the library on my new mac, from the hard disk, as I can see and access the individual pictures?
    Thanks!

    - My old mac ran on Snow Leopard.

+the problem is this, almost every time i start my imac, launch itunes and then play a track purchased from an old itunes account, it keeps asking me to authorize that account. even though i have had previous macs containing itunes content on this old account, it has always played with no issues at all. now then... to try and remedy this, i first of all uninstalled itunes COMPLETELY and reinstalled. this seemed to do the trick but after a few days, it all started again.+
Did you unauthorize your old Mac and authorize this one? You only get a maximum of 5 machines, so maybe you're past that or haven't authorized the new one - to do that, open iTunes, click on Store in Menu. Now, there should be two options: authorize or de-authorize this computer. Click on authorize and report back with whatever message you get.
+on to my second issue, Aperture. the app works fine except, like itunes it constantly asks me to enter the serial number from the box. please note that this is a legitimate copy purchased from the apple online store and i used it for about a year on my old macbook pro with only having to enter the serial during the initial installation.+
The Aperture SLA states that you can install it on two computers - a desktop and a laptop. I don't know if there is any protection embedded in the DVD (if you've already had it installed twice), but if the issue persists, I'd contact the Apple store (since you said that is where you bought it) and ask - or, if you're covered by warranty, simply call Apple. Or, if not, make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar and get answers there. It is perfectly legal to install it again as long as it no longer exists on the old machine - and I don't think it has anything to do with hardware, sounds more like a glitch. Oh, and have you tried to install it fresh, enter the serial, open it to see if it works and then copy over the library?

  • How to use iMovie with Aperture Library from an external drive?

    Hey,
    Some problems:
    1. My first video, I stored the project on my own laptop and used the library from the HD. This seems to give some problems, but I now figured out I have to consolidate the media etc. so now my files don't get missing after unplugging the harddrive. I figured it would be a better idea to make all new projects on the HD, so I have everything in place all the time. BUT. look at the picture: there seems to be something wrong with the way iMovie recognizes the aperture library: i'ts not listed in the events library under the HardDisk (named Passport) but under my own drive... ??? (+ I don't understand the idea of events when I have my aperture library: Do I need to make events for all projects I make? how is this possible when the library is not in the correct position?)
    2. I made a movie, but I'm unable to export a large/high quality version of this project. That's why I want to move my project to the HD and then open it on my partners Mac Book Pro to make a good export. Unfortunately, his macbook doesn't recognize the files and the files can't be opened in iMovie... (files stay gray and unclickable)
    To sum it all up:
I want the best way to work with this set-up: mac book air, external drive with all my files and iMovie.  And I want to be able to open the project on a different computer to make high quality exports.

First thing that comes up with videos in your 'picture' library is the videos are always under the full control of the picture library program. Which means Aperture is the keeper and master, and it decides what will be displayed in iMovie's Event Library. If Aperture is having difficulties sometimes it cannot or will not display the videos you are storing there.
Right now, I think the problem is your Aperture Library is on the internal Mac HD, not the external. You would have to move Aperture's Library to the external HD (along with all the pictures and videos). Then try to add the videos back into a project.
In extreme cases I have recommended moving the videos out of the picture library and re-importing them into iMovie Event folders to let iMovie manage it.

  • How do I create a new Aperture library from pictures I moved from IMAC?

I moved my Photos to External Hard drive from MAC . Can I create new aperture library in EHD?

As I wrote as long as both programs are latest versions they share the same library structure and can open each others libraries.
Open Aperture and then select File->Switch to Library. If the iPhoto library shows up in the list select it. If it does not select Other/New… If the iphoto library shows up in this list select it if not select Other Library and find, select and open the iPhoto library.
At this point there are a few things you can do depending on your situation. You can just leave the library as is if you do most of your work in iPhoto. Or you can turn the this library into an Aperture library.
To make it an Aperture library open Aperture and create a new empty library as you did before. Now go to File->Import->Library and select the iPhoto library. The iPhoto library will be imported and converted to an Aperture library.
While all of thsi is safe you the iPhoto library it is alwasy a good idea to have a bakup of the library before starting just in case.

  • Viewing iPhoto Library from Multiple Accounts

First off I've asked this question before, a long time ago, but still don't have it resolved.  I have (2) accounts on iMac with iPhoto 08 and I would like to share a single Iphoto Library. I would like Account 1 to have full rights and Account 2 only Viewing rights.   Account 1 is set as Administrator and Account 2 is normal user.
When I first posed this question, I was told to move the Library to Shared Folders and then give Permission to Account 2 to "Read".  I did that and it immediately locked up the Account 2s iPhoto with the error message "Drive is Locked or you don't have permission to make changes" when I log into the second account.
It's been that way for a very long time, my other users have been using Account 1 to view photos so I've ignored the problem.
Now I want to fix it:
Account 2 can't open iPhoto because of the error message and I don't know how to dissassociate the Shared Library from Account so I can open the program.  How to safely do this?
Is there a preferred way, or even 3rd party software, that will allow me to share the iPhoto library among multiple accounts on a single iMac?  Does latest iPhoto iteration allow this?  I am willing to consider most anything at this point...

To use iPhoto Sharing it must be running in both Accounts.
This method seems a little clunky at first, but works very well. Most importantly, it uses the System to do the job for you.
Create a new Account on your Mac, call it Media. Create an iPhoto Library there. (BTW: This will work for iTunes too.)
Enable Sharing on the Library:(Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other accounts. In those accounts, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The Library will appear in the other source pane.
This means that both users will be able to see the pics. If you want to use a pic then simply drag it from the shared Library to your own in the iPhoto Window. This means that each user can have their own edits.
If you want to add photos to the Library: Log into the Media account for that purpose.
To make it all seamless: Set your Mac to log into the Media Account automatically. Set iPhoto to launch on log-in. Then switch to your own account using Fast User Switching.
Net result: a Library that's permanently available to all users but also protected. Each user can have their own versions of the pics if they want.
The permissions issue you're having is directly related to they to share the iPhoto Library. To change what Library account 2 is looking at: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
To share an iPhoto Library with 08 without using iPhoto Sharing then move the Library to a disk (formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  and set to ignore file permissions. But remember, everyone will have the same access as you, if you do.
