Viewing Apple DV files on PC

Hi,
I captured some dv footage off my handycam on a mac with final cut. They played fine on the mac with quicktime. I am now trying to view these files on my pc with quicktime player 7. They are .mov files and under movie info it says the format is Apple DV. The audio is there but the picture is just flashing lines of colour. How I can play these files on my PC? (I have a number of files and don't want to have to go back to final cut and export them again or anything).
Cheers

Thanks Quicktime Kirk,
The video is there now as well. The video is really poor quality though. Is this an issue with Quicktime Player? Could I open with another free programme?
Thanks again,
Laudrup

  • I want to view a PDF file from Right to Left (Japanese page order) in Apple Preview

I want to view a PDF file from Right to Left (Japanese page order) instead of Left to Right (English page order) when I view 2 pages. Does someone know how to do this? I think I was able to accidentally get it to work before, someone please HELP!

Sadly there's no way to do that on apple's Preview.
Adobe reader, however, has this option.

  • Mavericks 10.9.1. Freezes or trackpad becomes slow and unresponsive when viewing downloaded PDF files in Preview.Help!

The earlier post was my first attempt at posting and had some typos. Repeated with typos corrected.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 with preinstalled Mavericks.I now have the 10.9.1 update. Almost from the time of purchase in Nov '13, I have been experiencing freezes and slow & unresponsive trackpad. I have more or less narrowed this symptom as happening when viewing downloaded PDF files. The only option is to force eject, if available or shut down. I spoke to Support as I thought it was a RAM issue and they told me that in Mavericks RAM showing almost full was normal as it uses RAM differently. They took me through some resets and cleaning up which has helped a little but freezing stll happens. This never happened with my Macbook AIr running Lion. Any suggestions?

So a PDF file that you can view in Preview on your MBA causes your new MBP to lock up and/or slow down. Is this right? Also you say more or less narrowed down to PDFs with Preview but does the computer exhibit this behavior with other programs and if so under what conditions? And how much free hard drive space do you have?
Viewing memory use in Mavericks is different than with previous versions of the OS. Today it looks like we need to pay attention to what Apple calls Memory Pressure which is gauged by the bar graph in Activity Monitor and to the Virtual Memory being used. When the memory pressure graph bar gets too high it turns red and that's bad news. Looking at how much memory is being used doesn't help - I have a 16GB computer and with almost nothing running it still shows something like 15.79GB used but the memory pressure graph is just a think green line. So unless you see the memory pressure bar turning red lets not worry about memory usage at the moment.
If among the things AppleCare had you do was reinstall Mavericks then I recommend a trip to the Apple store - and take a problem PDF file with you to demonstrate.

  • I have Quicktime 7 on my new MacBook Air running Yosemite 10.10.1 but would like to know if I can view or run my .mkv movies/files? Or are there any approved software that can run or view my .mkv files.  Thanks.

    Hello kimosabe0731,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! At this time, QuickTime does not support the playback of .mkv files. For more information, see the following resource:

  • How can I store and view a pdf file ?

I have an iphone 3GS 32Gb and want to store a pdf file on my phone so that I can view it later.
Email is the only way I have been able to view my pdf file, but I dont really want to do it this way.
On previous phones I could save a file on the phones memory card and then open the file in the necessary app.
This is something I know the iphone doesnt do, but I was wondering if there is a way around it or an app.

[File Magnet|http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/filemagnet-read-and-e-mail-your/id2847971 61?mt=8] is pretty good.
I did find one app (I cant remember the name, thought it was Air Share) and it said Apple had told them to change the app so that you cant transfer files over USB, only Wi-Fi.
I think that was [FileApp|http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/fileapp-previously-fileaid-document/id2 97804694?mt=8], (previously File Aid).
Apple dont like people being able to use their phone like this.... bloody control freaks.

  • Finder not able to view folders and files on EHD after updating to OS X 10.9.4

I can see still see 'Hitachi' in the 'Devices' Sidebar, but I am not able to view folders and files on this Hitachi XL2000 2TB FAT32 Hard Drive (EHD) that is USB connected to the iMac below.
    Late 2013 Apple iMac (27-inch Display 2560 x 1440), 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB, 512GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5, Magic Trackpad, Apple Wireless Keyboard and OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks
All was fine until I updated from OS X 10.9.3 to 10.9.4 earlier this week, so now when I double-click on 'Hitachi' it just loads and loads with nothing happening and never displays the folder and file contents of the EHD.
Also, confirmed that Hitachi EHD has been removed from Spotlight indexing per System Preferences > Privacy > + > Hitachi and it was so this does not seem to be an indexing issue.
I have used OnyX and Apple Disk Utilities unsuccessfully to try and fix this problem.
Interestingly, Backblaze online backup still sees the EHD and connecting this EHD to a Win 8.1 PC also sees the EHD.
Further, I ran the commands below in 'Terminal' to make sure the drive was visible and got the following results which shows that the EHD is not hidden.
    iMac:Applications john$ chflags nohidden /Volumes/Hitachi/
    iMac:Applications john$ GetFileInfo /Volumes/Hitachi/
    directory: "/Volumes/HITACHI"
    attributes: avbstclinmedz
    modified: 07/10/2014 23:26:44
Finally, I installed XtraFinder and am still not able to see the contents of the EHD, but when I installed OmniDiskSweeper I can navigate the EHD folder tree with no problems and can see the contents of the EHD, but when I try and open up a file it opens Finder which loads and loads and nothing happens.

Apple Support was quite helpful, but in the end I will wait to do a clean install of OS X Yosemite which is due in the Fall and not try and fix OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks.
It turns out that I run backups on my '/Users/john/Library' and the size of this folder before the 10.9.4 update was 1.07 GB and after the update it is 806.9 MB which is baffling, but in the end all of these problems should be resolved with a clean install of OS X Yosemite.
One lesson learned for the future is that I will wait on installing an update until it has been in the wild for awhile as a quick OS X Mavericks Finder Problem search and similar searches show there could be an issue.

  • Viewing edit PDF file on IPAD

I added text to a pdf file, save the file and then sent it as an email attachment. I opened up the email via the IPAD but when I opened up the attached PDF, none of my added text shows up. Note: the added text does show up with I open up the same file on the PC but not on the IPAD. How can I view the same file on my IPAD that I can view on my PC?

Try downloading the Adobe Reader app, it might work better than the default program:
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/adobe-reader/id469337564?mt=8
If that doesn't work you might want to try GoodReader, which is pretty much my go-to app for PDF management:

  • Where is the required codec for Quicktime 7.2 to view MPEG-2 files?

I have quicktime 7.2 running on Mac OSX 10.7.2. I have some movies in the MPEG-2 format. When i clik on them to play them, quicktime opens and says the required codec isnt available. Whats wrong, and where do i find the right "codec" to play the files?
    PLease help...
    Thx in advance!

OK, did some digging and this is the deal.
Inspite of Apple's vague description, the MPEG-2 codex works only with QuickTime 7 (which matches my installation). You do not need to have QT 7 Pro to view MPEG-2 files, but you do need it to transcode MPEG-2 to other formats. The plug in does not allow creating of MPEG-2 files.
You can also try searching download sites such as MacUpdate. There are shareware and freeware  utilities that claim to convert MPEG-2 files, but I can't vouch for them personally.

You can download QT 7 for free from here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

  • Adobe Reader version 8 and Apple PDF files

Since installing the Adobe Reader version 8.0, I cannot view any PDF files within Safari from the Apple document web pages (I have not yet tried other sources). All I get is the spinning beach ball, and have to Force Quit Safari, which is described as "not responding." I can view on the Reaader PDF files downloaded with Safari, but the plug-in that lets you view PDF files within Safari does not seem to be working with the new Reader version 8.0.

Thanks for the reply. I had that option checked when the problem occurred. The problem only occurs on the Apple Customer Service website. I can view PDF files with the Reader v.8.0 on other sites.
I downloaded the PDF Browser and deselected the Reader option you suggested. PDF Browser works fine and I think I will stick with that program.

  • Unable to view and access files

Since updating to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro (early 2011), I have been unable to view and access files on my time capsule. I can still access my backups through Time Machine, but not able to view or access the files that I saved onto the device (by method of copy and paste from my laptop hard drive to the TM). Before the "upgrade" to Yosemite I used to open Time Machine, close it, and then the icon of the TM (just like a typical external hard drive) would show up on the desktop. I would double click and open the TM icon and be able to view all the files that I saved onto the hard drive of the TM, as well as a folder that said "Time Machine Backups." Now, all I see now is my MacBrook Pro Icon and a folder named "File Server." and when I double click on either icon there is nothing to view. Please help!

    Try this..
Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup.. I strongly recommend the following setup.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. If you use ethernet also do it for ethernet.. this is important.
You can see the summary of the same thing from apple here.
OS X Yosemite: Connect to shared computers and file servers on a network
I have given somewhat more specific instructions which I believe are important.
With the TC manually mounted can you access the files??
If not please tell me and I will continue to think how to change permissions.
But please if you can at least open a directory and tell me what the permissions are currently set to.
eg. This is a directory on my TC.

  • Viewing Animated GIF files in Preview

    Hello...
I'm trying to figure out why I cannot view animated GIF files within Preview. When I search within Preview's help I get this...
*1. Open the animated GIF file in Preview.*
*2. If the window's drawer isn't already visible, choose View > Drawer.*
*The drawer contains a thumbnail image for the animated GIF. The number of frames in the animation appears in the lower-right corner.*
*3. Click the triangle beside the thumbnail image.*
*Preview shows all the frames in the animated GIF. When you click a frame, the animation stops and Preview displays that frame.*
Now at the end of number 3 it states that "the animation stops", so according to that statment Preview should be "playing" the animation until I click a certain frame to stop it. Well mine doesn't do this, SO what's going on?
Oh, my OS is v10.4.10 and Preview is v3.0.9(409).
    Thanks!

Preview in Panther did play animated gifs, although it was a bit clunky at it. Evidently they intended to fix this in Tiger, but instead they ended up breaking it completely. To play an animated gif you now need to do so in a browser, such as Safari. Preview no longer plays them at all.

  • How to view aspx PDF files in Safari 4.0.3

    Hi,
Using Safari 4.0.3 on os 10.5.8. I'm trying to view PDF files that are supposed to be viewed and editable within the browser (this is how the site works on a pc using internet explorer). When I click the relevant icon on the site, the site asks me if I'm sure I want to view that file (this is normal), and I click accept. Then Safari simply downloads the aspx file into the downloads folder. To the extent I could open the aspx manually using Reader (I can't), it wouldn't help anyway because the file is meant to be edited within a web browser, and within the pdf there are options to "save," "save and close," etc. I need to be able to open and view this file from within Safari.
I have the latest Adobe reader and made sure the settings allowed for opening of PDFs from the internet.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

I concur with Kirk Olson1's comment above, and have been unable to solve this 'til reading this post.
Change the .aspx extension of a saved file to .pdf and presto, Preview opens the doc for reading without complaint. This may not solve the problem the user has with editing the file within their browser. But the .aspx file, without a doubt, is in fact a file of "some" sort that is readable by Preview. As to the properties of editing the file, I can't speak to that. Since I am using this to read and save my bank statement, I would hope that the ASPX file is a signed document that can't be edited without the change being detectable... otherwise, what purpose is served by introducing a new filename extension ASPX for PDF files???
I've had the same "Browser can't view/open ASPX file" problem under Mac OS 10.5.* and Safari and Firefox. A bank provides me with "PDF" files (so they say) that download (to view, or file-save-as) with the .aspx filename extension. Firefox 3.5.* doesn't handle them. I've not downloaded Adobe products to my Mac and have avoided doing so because I don't want Adobe mucking with the way Preview works, etc.
In an experiment, I am unable to coerce Preview to open a copy of the same file while it had the .aspx extension (via Ctrl-Click the aspx file, Open_With, Enable All Applications to Open). Preview just sits there without opening the file, no error dialog, and I don't see any telltale warnings in the console log either. The same file, with a filename extension changed, no problem opening and viewing.
