Viewing AVI files

I've tried using the AVI viewing example that comes with Vision ("read avi example") but it views the AVI file very slowly - often slowing down to a frame rate of about 1/second. All of the AVI viewing examples do this. It doesn't matter which codec is used in the file or the frame resolution. My CPU usage exceeds 50% at this point. Uncompressed AVI files are viewed ALMOST at the correct frame rate with a CPU usage of about 25%. Can anyone tell me what's going on?
I'm running Labview 2009 with the Vision Development module installed, on a dual core pentium with 4 gigs or ram.
I have no problem playing AVI files with other programs.

Splitting the reading process from the viewing / analysis process also wouldn't solve the problem since it seems to take about 15 seconds to read in 1 second of video anyway and it is overtaxing my cpu still.
You can always use ActiveX to read the AVI with whatever player you wish into LabVIEW but I don't think this would be a satisfying solution. I am surprised you can't get your AVI to play correctly in LabVIEW :-o

No, it is not possible, but you can always download any video converter. Or open your AVI file with QuickTime.

QT support .mov better, but not .avi. Besides to use another player, you can try to do a simple conversion with the video converter. It's kind of the tool to convert .avi to .mov for QuickTime, for the occasion that you need QT to edit your videos.

I don't believe AVI is one of the supported formats. You are probably better off converting it to an MPEG format.

Out of memory error to view AVI files

Hi everyone,
I've imported 6 AVI files from the same source into the browser. All work fine except for 2 of them. When I click on those files in the browser to preview them in the viewer, I receive 2 messages: the first one is 'general error', the second 'out of memory'. What strikes me is that in the browser, the duration marks 0 although the files are respectively 4MB and 1,6MB. I've compared them to the 4 others and they are similar. Any idea would be welcome. Many thanks in advance.

AVI files don't work with FCP. FCP is based in Quicktime. You will need to convert all you AVI files to an quicktime editing codec like ProRes or DV-NTSC You can find a list of editing codecs in FCP's Easy Setup. You can use Compressor to convert the files.

View Avi files in Apple Tv 2

I have just bought a Apple TV2, and when I tried to view some AVI files / movies on it, I couldn't since iTunes appears not to recognize it.
What am I doing wrong?
All I can see on Apple TV must be puted in iTunes? If I produce my own video I must share it on iTunes to see on TV?

The Apple TV doesn't support AVI. Don't create your own videos in AVI, it is an old and outdated format, that even it's creators (M$) dropped 15 years ago.

How to view .avi files?

i have some .avi files that i would like to convert to a format that can be viewed on the iphone. there were several applications from the windows world that i used to use, and i know there must be for some for osx too. any recommendations?

I recently bought a Samsung Smartcam, which in the booklet says it saves in JMPEG format ("video compression format H.264, MJPEG"), however when I open the files they have been saved as AVI, which my Mac won't open.
I have a MacBook Pro running the latest version of Yosemite.
Will I have to download a converter and convert all the videos I want to view, or is there another way? I looked at the settings on the camera and it doesn't give me an option to change the format.

H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) and MJPEG are two different methods for compressing video data. Both are playback compatible with QT. AVI is a file container. It is also compatible with QT under Yosemite. However, QT is not programmed to play AVI files that do not contain MJPEG compressed video with or without some form of PCM encoded audio. So the primary question here is "What kind of data is in the AVI container?"
Will I have to download a converter and convert all the videos I want to view, or is there another way? I looked at the settings on the camera and it doesn't give me an option to change the format.
Unless the device records both H.264 and MJPEG simultaneously and stores both to AVI files (which alone would prevent playback), there must be a setting, either built into the device or controlled by separate software, that allows you to switch between H.264 (in a different file container) and MJPEG in the AVI file container. I would recommend trying to open the file in a third-party player like VLC to see if the file will play and what kind of data formats the file actually contains. As to the conversion of data—that would normally be a last resort to be used only if necessary.

Problem viewing AVI files with quicktime plugin

I have quicktime 7.6 and perian installed
When I try to stream an AVI file I can hear sound but no video is displayed
If I download the file and I then play it with quicktime everything is fine
If I remove perian then I will be able to stream from the website but of course unable to play MKV, Divx and Xvid files
I have removed all obsolete codecs and I am running out of ideas on what is wrong with the system

In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from

Possible to view .avi files in Quicktime on an Intel?

I can't seem to find a solution. Anyone else found one?

Download and install the DivX codec for intel:

95% of your avi playability issues (on up-to-date standard codecs anyway) will be solved.
VLC for intel handles an additional 4%. Drag-n-drop iSquint conversions cover the remaining 1%.
Popwire handles your WMVs - most anyway. And Flip4Mac handles your browser-based WMVs. Real Player for intel handles the balance.
That covers most day-to-day playability issues for me.

Viewing avi and wmv files with QT 10.1 and OS 10.7.4

In the last couple days, I think since I installed the last upgrade in the OS, my QT is 'unable to complete the process' of opening wmv files.
Months ago, I think after I upgraded to Lion, QT stopped allowing me to view avi files. The file opens, and I can scroll through the content, but to 'play' button doesn't work. I can still view those files using DivX Player 8.2.2.
These are all files that used to work just fine with QT. Is there anything I can do to restore this functionality to QT?

Use only QT 7 for those.

Quicktime doesn't open AVI file with Perian installed

I have installed Perian but Quicktime X doesn't open AVI files for a week. I have repaired permissions. But Quicktime only plays the AVI file if I reboot the Mac. VLC always plays the file. The AVI codec is XVID. Quicktime doesn't play other formats such as FLV. I have deleted .plist files, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist. I have found other files(com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0GH3f31, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0h9MBzV...) that I deleted also. Any idea? Thanks

And now ... surprisingly I view AVI files in Quicktime without Perian.
QT has very limited AVI support (file type and a few older codecs) built in. Most common codecs use by Windows users, however, require the additional support provided by Perian. If the AVI files are now playing in QT without Perian, then simply check the Inspector, Properties, or Info window to see which codecs are in your AVI file and you should be able to tell if they are among those supported "natively" by QT. Also note that this regaining of the ability to play your files may indicate a component conflict of some sort may have existed previously.

AVI Files in 10.3 and 9.2

Okay, I have a samll collection fo AVI files on my ibook. I have installed both codecs for OS 9 and X onto the Hard Drive. The videos are crisp in OS 9 when loaded onto the hard drive. Yet, some tends to drop frames in OS X. I have already maxed out the RAM and have a 5400 RPM Hard Drive. Is this possibly because of using QUICKTIME 7? Is the machine just too old? Thanx!

I don't know if this helps but I haven't been able to view avi files in QT either. After trying many times I finally downloaded VLC Media Player and it works fine. You can find it at Version Tracker.
