Viewing .doc/.docx files on new iMac

Hello folks,
I have a new iMac running 10.9.4. I don't seem to be able to open .doc or .docx files in either  the new Pages (5.2) or Pages '09, which I've installed. Pages '09 can view both file types quite happily on my old iMac (10.7.5) so I'm a bit mystified.
Can anybody help? Not being able to open these files is a real problem ...
thanks in advance.

Are these Word documents native to your new iMac filesystem, or are they resting on a Google, Dropbox, or other attached storage solution?
What error message is generated when you attempt to open a random Word document in Pages v5.2? Pages ’09? Preview? TextEdit? Do any of these applications just hang attempting to open the Word document?
What other applications that may open Word documents have you installed, if any?
If you single-click to select a random Word document, then press the Spacebar, what default application does Quick Look offer to use?

  • Cannot use Word2008 doc/docx file to Create PDF (single or multiple)

Attempting to Create PDF from File >> Single file or Multiple File>> selection of MS-Word2008 .docx or 97-compatible .doc file will error out.
Adobe has replicated the problem of receiving the same exact error message with Word2008(mac) doc/docx file as input for Acrobat Pro
fessional 9 to Create PDF. Possible cause is the absence of PDFMaker for Ver9.
    No solution exists.
Due to resident PDF functionalities of OSX Snow Leopard built into Preview and Print, Acrobat Professional 9 is
a redundant product for all MacOSX Snow Leopard computers. Only useful functionaity of Acrobat is Create Portfolio and possibly Reduce File Size.
The non-Universal Automator allows for the creation of PDF through PDF drop down menu available from Word>>Print Dialog which allows for Acrobat PDF option to choose Press/High-Quality/Smallest-File/Standard that can be modified through Distiller.
Conclusion: Acrobat Professional 9 for MacOSX Snow Leopard as a stand-alone product is Obsolete - Dead on Arrival (DOA). Still useful when used in conjunction with bundled CS4 Suites.

There is much Acrobat can do once the PDF create created.
Go to Print Menu and save as Postscript file then drop on Acrobat.

  • Pages App only displays first page of MS Word .doc & .docx files

    Hello all,
There may be a thread out there to address this, but I couldn't find it.
I'm trying to switch to the Pages App from Microsoft Word.  All of my .doc & .docx files only display the first page's text.  Any proceeding pages show up blank.  When I show pages side by side it looks as if the second page's info is there, but shifted to the side (half off the page) and I can't seem to move them to the proper place so I can see all my work.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem is?  I'd like to get as far away from Microsoft as possible.
    Thanks!

    Folly,
There's a bug in the Pages adaptation to the Retina Display that causes that problem, and it's not just with imported documents, but all Pages documents according to what I have read here. Search these discussions for more detail. For now, choose "Open in low resolution" in the info pane for the Pages file.

  • How to Transfer PC files to new IMac

I just purchased a new iMac yesterday. I have my PC files backed up on an external HD. My external HD won't work/not recognized when I test it by plugging it into my Mac Book Pro. However because I have my computers set up on a network I saved my files on DVD and the music files which are too large I copied onto my PC desktop to access via the network. Isn't there an easier way to transfer files? This is very time consuming since all of my back up files on my external HD are in Zip format. I also want to make sure all of my iphone files are on there but am not sure what to look for. Yes, I purchased one on one but am not about to carry a 27" desktop down to the store (I bought it online). Help please!

Congratulations on your new iMac. What format is your external HD formatted in, that is probably the only issue the iMac has reading it. You may be able to fix it if it's formatted in NFTS, if so you can download and install NFTS-3G and then your iMac can see the drive. From there it's a simple matter of dragging and dropping files.
If you are still stuck you have 90 days of free AppleCare phone support, the number is in your manual and you should call for some advice on how to move your stuff. In addition if you haven't already here are some very valuable links for people switching from PC's to Mac and also on learning Mac basics.

  • Mac Pro files to new iMac via my Time Capsule

I've read a lot of post, but still am scared... In a nutshell I got my new iMac quad core. I have my intel Mac Pro and Macbook Pro both hooked up to my time capsule for internet and back-up. What are the safest/best steps for transfering my files from the Mac Pro to the iMac? Is it through using my Mac Pro, or using the Time Capsule? Also, once that is done do I just go into the time machine settings and delete the mac pro? Thanks.

It's probably easiest to use the migration assistant or manually transfer them between the two machines.

  • Can I transfer my iWeb files to new iMac running Yosemite

I have recently purchased a new iMac running Yosemite 10.10.2. I have a set of iWeb files that I was working on but had not yet published as a website on my old iMac which is running OS X 10.5.8. Is it possible to transfer these files to the new mac? I can't find any iWork or iLife files in the Applications folder on my new mac.

Yes, you can transfer the files, but you will be unable to open them, because as you have found, new Macs have not shipped with iWeb installed on them for a long time now - iWeb as you may or may not know is very old software now that has not been sold or supported by Apple for at least 3 years.
The only other way that you will be able to get iWeb onto your new Mac is buy a copy of iLife 11 or iLife 09, both of which contained the final version of iWeb - which is iWeb 09.  You would need to purchase this from Amazon.  You could try an old installation CD that came with your other Mac if you still have it and you could try installing iWeb onto your new iMac from that, but if it does not work, then you'll have to buy a copy of iLife 11 or 09 from Amazon.
Your other alternatives of course are to find some new web creation software that is supported or you continue to use iWeb on your old Mac and just update and publish your sites from that machine.
In the end though, it might just be easier to bite the bullet and move onto some new software and re-build you site with that.
Software that is worth taking a look at is RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express, WebAcappella 4, Flux V and EverWeb.  Then don't forget all the online website builders that you have, that are slightly different, such as WordPress.com, Wix.com and others.
Other alternatives are then the Content Management Systems such as Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.org.
I would suggest that you take a look at EverWeb first though - it is very much like the iWeb interface and can do a lot more than iWeb could out of the box, such as contact forms included, SEO included, drop down menus, master pages, support for PayPal with widgets and lots more.
Take and look and you can download a trial version before you buy.
There are lots of different options available to you, but ultimately, if you want to continue using iWeb on your new Mac, then you'll have to buy iLife form Amazon.  Time to move on perhaps?!!

  • Viewing a pdf file with new and new content

    Hello folks,
Assume that one creates a pdf and uses Preview or Reader to view it.
Then adds something to the picture and opens the file again: new content, old filename.
One would like to see one of the following schemes:
    a) Open would close the old window and present the new content in a new
    window.
    b) Open would keep the old window and create a new window for new content.
    What happens is:
    c) Open says: "I've already displayed a file with this name, I don't need to do a thing."
Is there a way to force behaviour a) or b) ?
    Thanks,
    Miklos

If the mountain does not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad goes to the mountain.
On this basis I wrote a short perl script that increments a number, and constructs a new
filename from the original filename and the incremented number.
Then it copies the original file to the new name and runs Reader or Preview on the new file.
Now I can see as many versions together as I like.

  • PDF maker won't combine doc docx files

Hello, I can no longer combine Office type files, specifically .doc or .docx files in the pdf builder.  It will only accept pdf files when combining multiple files to build a single pdf file.  I know this used to work (at least on my PC).  I also am aware that I can save them as pdf in Word and then combine but that takes much longer and is a work around for a pretty basic function that I can't get to work.  I've searched this forum and have yet to find a resolution for this problem.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Running Mac OS 10.8.2 and Acrobat X.  Office 2011.  Thanks.

The key here is : I know this used to work (at least on my PC)
    Never worked on a Mac.

  • Problems sending files to new iMac

I have tried to send folders from our MacBook to our new iMac (out of the box 2 days ago!), and keep on getting a 'Device does not have the necessary services' message. Just in case it was the MacBook with the problem I have tried sending media files from my phone to the iMac and keep on getting 'failed' messages. I tried to send a file from the iMac to the MacBook and this worked, so it's in the receiving, rather than the sending. What can I do? Thanks

Have you enabled Bluetooth Sharing in the System Preferences? Go to Sys Prefs/Sharing and check the box to allow Bluetooth sharing in the Sharing services list on the left of the pane. You will then be offered a number of things to configure when using this service on the right of the pane.

  • How can I transfer older Claris Works and AppleWorks files to new iMac.  I use Pages, and MacWord, Excel, etc. as well.

    March 20, 2013
I have a new iMac using Pages and Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. for mac.  I'd like to transfer older ClarisWorks and AppleWorks files to my new computer.  Can this be done?

Additionally, Numbers can read/open spreadsheets. However, anything done in the drawing/painting part cannot be read by any application - you would have to export those (on the old machine) as a .jpg or pdf. You could then open them, but no longer edit or change the content.

  • Launching Win.Migration Assistant on Win.7 laptop to transfer files to new iMac

I downloaded Windows Migration Assistant to my Win.7 O/S laptop so to transfer files to a new imac. The program is downloaded but when i enter "run" it won't launch. Also it is connected directly by ethernet to my new imac and both are on the same modem router system. The imac doesn't recognize the laptop. Anyone out there who may know what the problem is? Maybe there are too many virus or spyware blockers on my Win. 7 laptop(?)

Shut down the machine, connect it via wire to the Internet modem, restart, and use the Setup Assistant to transfer from your other, but unidentified machine. See Pondini's Setup New Mac guide for details. Trying to do anything wirelessly is an exercise in futility, since it's the slowest of all transmission devices.

  • Opening appleworks label file in new imac,

My christmas card labels were created in appleworks labels, now there is no way to open the cwk label file in my new imac. I don't have access to my appleworks in my old computer, can someone help!!!

    Hi hcz,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Appleworks forum.
Your labels will be in an AppleWorks 6 database file, a file format that can be opened only by AppleWorks 6. There are a couple of routes open to you:
    1.
Get a new AppleWorks 6 installation disk and install the application from that.
Cautions: The installer on the disk must be the OS X version. Early versions of AppleWorks 6 contained both the Classic and OS X versions of AppleWorks, but the installer ran only in OS 9 and earlier. Hardcore Mac had installation disks for AppleWorks 6.2.4, with a Mac OS X installer application when I last checked.
    2.
Find someone who has AppleWorks 6 installed, and get the labels printed (to labels or to a pdf file, from which you can print) and/or get the file converted to a format which you can open with your current spreadsheet program. Suggested formats would be tab delimited text (.txt) or MS Excel (.xls). The text file can be opened into any text editor, then copied and pasted into pretty much any spreadsheet. Most spreadsheets will also open an Excel formatted file.
If you wish, you may send the file to me. I'll return a pdf, a text file and an excel formatted file, and trash the original. If you choose to do this, you'll find my address by clicking my name (in blue0 to the left of this message. Please place "AppleWorks Labels" in the subject line of your message.
