Viewing email within Time Machine - no subject line to identify, how do I find a specific email?

I am running OS X Yosemite, Thunderbird 31.2.0. I am looking for a deleted email using Time Machine. The emails are not identifiable by subject, by date, etc. but have some sort of code.
How can I search by a subject or date?

I'm not sure Time Machine will be useful.
Look in your profile for Trash in the relevant account. Open that with your text editor. If the message has been deleted from Trash, it will still be there if Trash hasn't yet been compacted.

  • Can't View Backups Within Time Machine

After 8 months of flawless operation Time Machine give an error backing up. I deleted the ".InProgress" and "Latest" files within the .backupsdb file. After this Time Machine did a proper backup - it showed up within the .backupsdb file. When I now enter time machine I don't see the 8 months of backups - only todays backup.
Is there anything I can do to get TM to show the full range of backups?

That's not good. You can corrupt your backups that way. Time Machine can recover from a partial backup all by itself. And the "latest," which is an alias, not a file, is what makes the +Today / Now+ panel. I think TM will re-create it for you.
Do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions) on your TM drive via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
If you have a problem with TM, start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting post at the top of this forum.

  • Cannot view files in Time Machine

I have my time machine backup on Time Capsule. I cannot view files while I am in the interface of time machine. Some files can be viewed with quick look such as photos and some eps or .ai files. Indesign documents will not view, address book will not view and many others. I did a series of tests and the files will restore just fine, but you cannot view them in the time machine mode. Very frustrating!! Is there a setting that I am missing?

You can do that easily.  If you can't view it via QuickLook, restore it to an alternate location, such as your desktop.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #16.
I have been able to view documents in Time machine before.
Yes, some types of documents have always been viewable in TM backups.  TextEdit, Pages, Numbers, Preview, and no doubt others.  But some others aren't, and haven't been.
If bridge can view indesign documents, then Apple sure has the capability to add that as a feature to time machine.
Doubtful they'll do that for a 3rd-party app, but ask here:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/timemachine.html
In 30+ years of design, I have only a handful of times forgot to save my work as I go.
Neither have I, but (a) it only takes once, and (b) most users don't.  (Actually, most users don't even back up ).
Time Machine is not likely to change much in the forseeable future.  If it doesn't meet your needs, there are lots of other backup apps around.

  • Navigation is stuck within Time Machine

I am trying to restore several folders from a Time Machine backup, but when I enter Time Machine, the finder within Time Machine comes up pointing to my User folder, but won't navigate to any other folder or any other drive.  It doesn't matter where I have the finder window before I enter Time Machine, I always get the finder pointing to my user folder within the Star Wars display.  I can navigate between backups in time, but that does no good if I can't choose the folder I want to restore.

Thank you for your help. I am now working with a Apple programmer to help solve my many issues. I now have double time machine HD icons on my Mac Book Pro desk top. We are migrating again after creating a Test account on the MBP. I have to call back tomorrow. He says he is going to research the double Time Machine HD. Hopefully this is all working to the road to recovery. This is my first unpleasant experience with Mac. But the help is phenomenal. It is American Made....Hooray.

  • Where does time machine store content that would be found in the Finder window under "All Images, All Movies, All Documents"? Also, I have many Garageband projects and mp3 files I can't find.

Easiest way to find time machine files is to open up the folder or application(works for email and iphoto)  they were in - then click on time machine ICON or enter time machine from the time machine menu to go back through the files.

Is what you're saying that you only want backups in TM of the state of your Mac from January 2015 to the current date and nothing before then? I'd think the simplest solution would just be to delete in TM all the backups prior to 1/15 and then let TM do its thing. The ultimate source for all things Time Machine is here. On this page, note the comment that "Time Machine will never delete the backup copy of anything that was on the disk being backed-up at the time of any remaining backup" which I understand to mean that if you delete all the backups in the TM file prior to 1/15, any file that wasn't present on your Mac as of 1/15 will no longer be represented in the TM file. Note that the second link also has instructions for how to delete TM files.
If you were trying to accomplish something else, then as Emily Litella (Gilda Radner in SNL) used to say, "never mind."

  • Remove a meeting on specific time date and subject line

    Hi
I have a situation where a meeting organizer is no longer able to update or cancel a meeting she booked. Some how she also became the participant of the meeting and now has lost control of the actual meeting. Not able to edit or send update. I've exhausted
my efforts in trying to find a solution for this. Doesn't look like there is anyway to get back ownership or transfer it to someone else.
So my next plan is to remove the meeting from everyone's calendar via a script. So my question is, is there a way to remove a meeting from all participants calendar where the date/time and subject line is known. This is to ensure only that meeting is removed
    from the calendar.
or if anyone has some other ideas please do share. I need to somehow send notification of cancellation and remove the meeting from outlook and the organizer has no control anymore.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Per my understanding, you might want to display all the specific documents in a page, they can be filtered by values of a Date and time column.
A possible solution I will provide is that, we can create custom visual web part to display all these documents. In the code behind, run a query with CAML to retrieved all the
documents with the specific date and time, then generate a view of hyperlinks that points to these documents.
In this way, we can combine the filter component with the data display component into one web part, with the help of CAML query and Object Model, it would not be a tough job to
    implement such a solution.
More information about CAML and Object Model:

  • Viewing iphoto on time machine

    Hi all,
I am trying to figure out how I can view my iphoto from a previous backup I made on timemachine. I backed it up onto an external hardrive, so I know it is all there. But when I click the date and click iphoto, it says that it cannot open iphoto because there isn't enough free space. I also tried pressing command when opening iphoto to try and open another iphoto, but it led me to the pictures I currently have on my computer. Help?!?!?!

  • Is it possible to view/compare two Time Machine desktop dates at the same time?

I accidentally lost a file on my desktop, inadvertently dragging it onto my browser. I don't know what file I lost, and would like to retrieve it through my Time Machine.  I don't want to replace all of the files on my desktop, but I would like to compare the files from two different dates (current date and last time saved) to discover the file I lost. If there's an easier way to make this discovery, I'm open for suggestions. Otherwise, I wonder if there's a way to see or compare my current   files on desktop vs. my last save to Time Machine (without printing out a list).
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hey apple_peeler,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to find out what is now missing by comparing it with other backups. The Restoring data from Time Machine backups section explains how you can do that.
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time. The timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive. If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
    Have a nice day,

  • Useful View Options in Time Machine: Changed Files?

I set up time machine and a day later I can browse around. Very cool graphics.
But it seems to be missing something useful (essential?) -- a way to look at what changed from backup to backup. Looking at the Info on a particular file on a particular backup I can see that the Last Modified Time is 3 weeks ago. But if I'm making changes to a set of files, figuring out WHICH backup I want (2,3 or 4 hours ago) would be easier if I could see what I've changed. It would be especially useful if "backups" where nothing changed were simply omitted.
Just for "fun" I restored a backup from a couple hours before, during which time I had not used the computer. And strangely, TM said it was going to restore some pdf from my desktop. I kept the original, and the two files were identical AND had the same modification time. (That's when I went to try to explore what files have changed unsuccessfully).
There's obviously a bit of a technical issue with knowing the changes from the latest backup to the current machine state. But going the other way TM must have that information.

As far as I'm aware the start & stop times are stored in the library database, not the media files. If you backup/restore/transfer the whole library then the settings are included. If you create a complete copy of your iTunes folder on another drive you can connect to that copy by holding down option/alt as you start iTunes so you can check that everything is working properly before you send the Macbook away.

  • Viewing cloned or time machine sent mail

How do I safely look for old sent mail without risking updating a current sent mail folder with the older cloned or time machined sent mailbox.  I would want to search in 2 different clones and time machine.
    Thanks

Make sure you have a Sent mailbox visible in Mail, then select it, and enter Time Machine.
With the clones, see if you can mount them in Finder. If so, In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library/Mail/V2 and try looking for your user library in the clone.

  • Can't Find Slideshows within Time Machine iPhoto Backup

I have spent quite a lot of time setting up a slideshow with Ken Burns effects and added music. Large slideshow with 367 photos, went to send it to iDVD and it doesn't work...can't export it as it seems it's too large but that is another story (I think a bug with iPhoto 09)...even after the update! Anyway...someone suggested splitting the slideshow up to export it to see if that worked. I did that and the two new parts of the slideshow no longer have the Ken Burns effect applied. My stupid fault, but I already deleted the photos that weren't required from the original slideshow and the Undo worked once but then greyed out. I'm guessing it must have saved in the middle...typical! So...having backed up with Time Machine the night before I plugged in the drive and navigated to iPhoto from yesterday. Photos all there but no Slideshow in the left hand pane. Maybe I'm missing something or does Time Machine not backup slideshows that have not been exported?
    Thanks

Solved, restored the iPhoto Library from the finder and it worked!

  • Renaming mailbox within TIme Machine Resore folder

I lost my primary account inbox(not headers, but content), so I restored it using Time Machine.
I keep most all e-mails. What would be the best thing to do now? I renamed the folder, and tried to move it back to the top of the side pane with my other three account inboxes, but was not able to do so.
Should I empty out the old inbox and transfer all messages, or would it just be better to keep it at the bottom as an archive?
    Thanks a bunch!

repaired disk permissions again and tried an even older file and it's working now. that was scary!
