Viewing embeded quicktime movies in the player?

Is it possible to view a movie that's embeded on a webpage in the Quicktime Player instead, therefore allowing the viewer to watch the movie at a different size?

Its the browser, not the web-page or file that decides how to handle files of any particular type. Safari does not allow the user to configure it to a great extent (and insists on using the QuickTime Plug-in even if it isn't installed...) but other browsers do.
If you use Firefox ( http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ ) the first time you go directly to the url of any mov file, ( paste in the URL of this mov file for instance: http://images.apple.com/macbookpro/gallery/images/macbook48001122006.mov ) and a window will appear. ( see http://wings.buffalo.edu/computing/documentation/mac/Sorted%20Images/norton10/no rton10_01.jpg )
If you then choose to "Save to Disk" and "Do this automatically for files like this one from now on" a Download action is created in Firefox's preferences.
To view or change the Download action:
Menu bar > Firefox > Preferences > Downloads > View & Edit Actions
Select the "MOV" action.
Click "Change Action"
Select whatever you wish - save to disk, open with a plug-in (QuickTime Plug-in for instance), open with the default application or pick any application with which to open this type of file.
Click "Ok"

  • How do I open a QuickTime movie in the Player

    How do I create a link in Dreamweaver8 which will open a QuickTime movie in the QuickTime Player and not in another browser window of Safari?

    Looking at the source of this page, the markup you posted was:
    <pre><a href="Excerpts-The Cult.mov" target="QUICKTIMEPLAYER">Video<br></pre>
    1. An HREF tag needs to be closed with an </a> immediately after the word you're hyperlinking (in this case, "Video").
    2. Many web servers are cAsE sEnSiTiVe. Best to use all lower case chars in your filename, and avoid space chars altogether (spaces are interpreted as a '%20' character code, that can muck things up).
    3. Instead of an HREF tag, you need to use an EMBED tag to invoke the QT Plugin, as demonstrated on the page I linked to above. The HREF tag doesn't understand TARGET="QUICKTIMEPLAYER", only the QT Plugin understands that attribute.
    4. For cross-platform compatibility (specifically with Internet Explorer Win 5.5SP2 & above), you also need to use an OBJECT tag to embed your mov. That will be ignored by browsers that use Netscape-style plugins (they use EMBED), but still read by browsers that use ActiveX controls (i.e: Internet Explorer Win).
    You might find it useful to work through the basic embedding QT tutorial, also the ADC HTML Scripting Guide for QT.
    If all that makes your head spin, grab a copy of PAGEot and get it to generate the QT markup for you.

  • Export embedded quicktime movies to html slideshow?

    I'm trying to make an html slideshow of a keynote presentation that has embedded quicktime movies. The movies just get saved as single png images. Is there a workaround or something obvious I am overlooking?
    Since iPhoto lets you do this, I would assume it isn't impossible, but perhaps it just isn't implemented within keynote (which seems kind of backward).

    Thanks. I was afraid that was the case, but a former apple VP suggested I ask since there are many apparently undocumented features (and iPhoto/iWeb can do this, so the api exists).
    The relevent html code is actually a java script that loads an array of exported png files. Each element of the array is defined like this:
    images[2] = "mrnahh.html_files/mrnahh.003.png";
    so I tried just telling it to load a mov file instead, but it wasn't so easily fooled. It might be easier for me to make a slideshow of the png files and mov files within iWeb (which really makes messy html and javascripts that are next to impossible to hack.)
    Anyway, many thanks. I'll leave this open for now in case someone else knows a simple secret.
    The HTML export feature is great, and produces nice clean simple interfaces and web code. I hate to abandon it.

  • Embedding quicktime movie???

    hi, i'm struggling to load a .swf with an embedded quicktime
    mov into my flash page using the preloader + loader components in
    flash mx 2004!
    i've followed the help: "To create an application with the
    ProgressBar component in event mode:..."
    the loader works but the sound in the embedded mov starts
    playing before the visuals - pls help!!!
    this is the code on the 1st frame of the original SWF to load
    the SWF with the embedded .mov:
    stop();
    loader.autoLoad = false;
    loader.contentPath = "graphics/sponsjan_clip.swf";
    pBar.source = loader;
    // loading does not start until load() is invoked
    loader.load();
    and here's the final page:

    Thanks Daniel. Your suggestion was correct.
    In order to access the quicktime movie file I had to use the following path:
    /<portal-name>/portlets/<portlet-name>/<movie-name>.mov

    My guess would be that the path to "sample.mov" is different depending on
    whether you access
    the page directly or the portlet is included within the overall Portal
    page.
    As an experiment, try changing the URL to an absolute path, or copying the
    file into the same location as your other portal resources.

    after perusing other subjects with playback issues:
    this is the fix:
    -Launch Control Panel - Double click Quicktime, If you do not see quicktime, look on the top left side of control panel and switch to classic view. This will then allow you to see Quicktime.
    -Now click the advanced tab and click on Safe Mode GDI Only, Apply, then ok.

  • Keynote does not support exporting with embedded Quicktime Movies

    I hope this helps a few of you out before you run into this problem.
    Keynote does not support export to Quicktime with any slides that contain a quicktime movie.
    Created a 27 page slide show with transitions, music, narrations and 6 Quicktime movies (Actually LiveType Text scrolls)
    When I attempted to export it never finishes the export cutting it short after about 20 pages.
    And the pages with the movies, don't start playing.
    It exports fine as a quicktime movie without the movies inserted though.
    Spoke with Apple Support and they confirmed that quicktime placed files within Keynote playback is only supported from the native Keynote Application.
    I read somewhere on this board that it was an issue with Quicktime version 7.5, not so as I tried the same test on a mac with Quicktime 7.42 and it had the same issue.
    So, beware.

    Maybe I didn't understand well what you said but it is possible to export a Keynote file with embedded Quicktime movies to a quicktime movie. Actually, I'm doing it and I works. BUT, the issue I get is that I can't get my embedded videos to loop. Grrr...

  • Creating a QuickTime movie with the new Canon T5i  camera in iMovie 9.0.9.

    Help needed creating a QuickTime movie with the new Canon T5i  camera in iMovie 9.0.9.  The project is done and looks good...I need help understanding what settings need to be set so I can make a QuickTime movie in the highest quality that would fit the ratio of 16.9 to be sent out to my YouTube page.  I played around with some of the settings and have not come with the right setting for the video.  I want the highest quality with the lowest amount of megabytes…thanks

    I would suggest using SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE and choose 1920x1080 (if your source material supports this).
    That should work well in YouTube.
    If you want to go further with custom QuickTime settings,  here are some that should work, but in my experience, it will be no better than using SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE.
    follow the instructions below to create a .mov video that will work on YouTube:
    In iMovie, select Share > Export Using QuickTime
    Next, you may want to check your Options to verify that the following settings are correct:Video settings
    Compression Type: H.264
    Frame Rate: 30 is preferred. 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 are also acceptable.
    Data Rate: Automatic
    Key Frames: Automatic
    Frame Reordering: Unchecked
    Audio/Sound settings
    Format: AAC
    Click Show advanced settings and choose Constant Bit Rate as encoding strategy
    Other settings
    Size: Choose the original size of the video
    “Prepare for Internet Streaming”: Fast Start

    The "trick" is a Poster movie. A small button or graphic that says something like "Play" or "Click to Play" that is linked to your actual href movie file.
    If you also use "target="quicktimeplayer" the file will open in QuickTime Player instead of a browser window.

  • Black frame in embedded quicktime movies in Keynote when exporting to quicktime movie

    I've included some quicktime movies made in Photoshop in my Keynote presentation. When viewing the Keynote presentation from within keynote, the movie play perfectly. However when I export the presentation to a Quicktime move, the first or last frame of the embedded movie is black creating a flicker effect on play.
    The quicktime movies have been embedded as loopable animations using the animation build in function 'Start movie' (after transition with 0 delay).
    Is there a setting that will prevent the black frame on export or is this a bug?

  • Quicktime movies on the web

    I have placed short quicktime movie clips on my website saved as H.264. Unfortunately some can see it others get nothing or just sound. File was originally created as DVCPro HD and exported as H.264 with 1000 bit rate and loaded on my site. Is there a particular format and settings to export with that everyone can view and that holds the same good quality as H.264
    http://www.ronfrankproductions.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/demo4.mov
    thanks.

    Is there a particular format and settings to export with that everyone can view and that holds the same good quality as H.264
    No such animal. No matter what compression format combination you use, there will always be someone out there who cannot or will not use the the required software to view your files. In the case of H.264/AAC, viewers are limited to those using QT 7 or an equivalent media player. MPEG4/AAC would allow you to extend compatibility back to QT 6 and equivalent players but it still does not guarantee any particular user will have the required software and means you would have to increase the video data rate to maintain the same level of quality. You will simply have to use whatever compression format you think will reach your primary target audience and not worry about the rest or offer the content in multiple compression formats and hope for the best.

  • I can't view any Quicktime movies from a drive that was uploaded by a Mac

    I have a drive with approx 250 GBs of Quicktime movies that I need to edit. The movies were uploaded onto the drive by a Mac running Quicktime 7.1.3 Pro. This is the same version of Quicktime I am running. When I try to view the movies or import them in AVID Liquid or Express Pro, I can hear the audio, but the screen remains black. I have tried to convert the files in AVIs, MPEGs, and AVID files to no avail. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? What seems so strange to me is that I can't even view them.
    BYW: I am able to access the contents of the drive because I am running Mac Drive.

    Pick one of the files and open it using QuickTime Player. Open the Movie Info window (Control-i) and note the video codec used.
    Not all codecs are compatible with Mac's and PC's. If it was rendered using a Mac only video codec you'll need to have the Mac export the files again using a cross platform codec.

  • Any way to protect a quicktime movie on the net?

    Hi,
    I wonder if there is any way to make a quicktime movie NOT downloadable from the web.
    I have a clip I would love to show on the web but I have to make 100% sure nobody is able to download and distribute it.
    Is there any way? Kiosk Mode seems not to be too safe (at least this is what I heard)
    thanks for your help

    The kioskmode="true" html tag only removes the "download" part of the movie controller and would only keep QuickTime Pro users from downloading your file via the controller. It also prevents "drag and drop".
    Any user could search through your page source code and find the URL to your QuickTime file. Dragging it to the "Downloads" window of Safari would allow them to keep a local copy.
    "Streaming" media files (requires special server software to deliver) are the most difficult to capture. Because noting is locally cached the best an average user could do would be to save a reference copy of your file.
    You could also use AppleScript to set internal flags inside the QuickTime .mov file as "un-editable". These flags can be reset using "hex editing" software but, again, beyond the scope of an average user. An example (one of mine):
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/D/
    Notice that the html code "forces" the QuickTime Player app to open instead of playing in a browser window. You own "Pro". Take a look at the menu options under the File menu.
    Notice that save, save as, export and share are unavailable?
    It would also be very difficult to use a screen recording app to capture my movie "window".

  • Code for Embedding Quicktime Movies in Web Pages-Question

    I have been embedding QT movies in web pages for years. I used to use the embed and object tags, but due to the problems with the default settings of IE7, in regards to ActiveX, I recently changed to the javascript method.
    I will paste sample code below, of how I use it, with the movie title change to sample: (of course I change the dimensions, depending on the movie size.)
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"><!--
    QT_WriteOBJECT('sample.mov', '644', '76','','controller','true','autoplay','true','showlogo','true','cache','false' ,'enablejavascript','true');
    // --></script>
    and I put at the top of the page, right before </head>
    <script src="AC_QuickTime.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
    I forgot where I got this code. Perhaps from someone on this forum, or elsewhere. It seems to work with the default settings on most browsers.
    I have a couple questions, however, regarding fine-tuning it a little more.
    1) If it takes a while for the movie to load, users who open my pages see a static Q QT icon. How would one make the icon flash, with flashing text that says "Loading", so that the user knows that the video is loading? (I have seen that on other sites, and don't know how to do that.)
    2)As said the javascript works with most browser default settings, as most have javascript enabled by default. But what if a user does not have javascript enabled? Could the code sense that, and if non-existent, tell the user to enable javascript? Or, if javascript is disabled, could the embed and/or object tags be activated?
    3) The code above, that I got from someone, says "cache=false". That means that each time someone sees the movie, it has to be reloaded from the net, and not from the browser cache, correct? If so, why would one want it to be set that way? If it's a large movie, a user with a slower computer and/or internet connection would certainly prefer if it could play from the cache the next time, loading much faster. Is there any reason to prefer "cache=false"?
    4)Is there any code that could be put in, to allow the user, if they prefer, to download the file,(perhaps with a right-click or CTRL-Click), instead of playing it in the browser?
    Thank you very much in advance, to whomever can help with these code questions.

    Thank you for your reply, Kirk,
    1)Yes, I do have "fast start" enabled in my files, and they were made with QT Pro, newest version. So no, there is no "trouble with my files".
    However, I would still like to have that flashing "Loading" icon when the file is loading, as I see on other sites. (And yes, even with "Fast Start" enabled, depending on the size of the file, the speed of the computer and internet connection, it can take a little time beforeit starts.) Anyone know how to create that flashing "Loading" icon, rather than just the static Q?
    2)I just wondered if there was a way for the javascript to recognize if the user does not have javascript, and bring up a message if that is the case, telling the user they need to enable it to see the content. (As would happen if the user does not have the QT plugin installed.) Yes, I realize it would not work to include in the normal way the embed and object tags as well, I wondered if there was a way to invoke them only if the user doesn't have javascript. Perhaps impossible, but I thought I'd ask, in case someone knows of a way to do that.
    4)Yes, I guess I could just put a separate direct text link to the movie file for downloading. I just wondered if there was a way to put that in the javascript, so that if someone right-clicks on the QT icon, they can download rather than view it, rather than use a separate link. That may also be impossible, but I thought I'd ask, and see if there is a way to do that.
    Your question to me regarding dimensions--I forget which was the QT movie, that I took that sample from. Yes, I have some in unusual sizes. They are not normal movies. I don't have time to explain more now though, and that has no bearing on the questions I asked.
    Once again, thanks for replying, and if you or someone else could help further with my questions, I would appreciate it very much.
    Have a nice day!
