Viewing files in homefolder (with filevault on) through time machine

I was told by an Apple tech that I cannot view a back up of filevault items THROUGH time machine if the back up was created in the account where filevault is turned on. I’d like to better VERY clear on what I’m asking so I’ll give an illustration.
Account 1 (primary login) is where filevault is active. Account 2 was doesn’t have filevault active and was created (by suggestion of Apple tech) for creating back ups of filevault that could be accessed through time machine.
So the scenario is (according to Apple): Acct 1 can be used to create a backups but the filevault items within this backup CAN’T be accessed through time machine. Acct 2 can be used to create a backup and the filevault items for Acct 1 would be accessible through time machine.
So here’s my question: If, while logged into Acct 1, will I be able to access items (through time machine) in a backup created while in Acct 2?
It's a bit much, I know, but please read carefully before responding. I'd like to avoid questions for which the answers are above and questions which aren’t truly relevant to my issue.
Thanks for any pertinent feedback and suggestions…….

A different Apple tech has cleared things up for me. It turns out that filevault items CANNOT be accessed through the time machine interface no matter what account the backup is created from (but rather through the finder window under Devices/Time Machine Backups).

  • How do I transfer files through time machine from old macbook to new macbook pro?

I have Lion on my old macbook and I have saved all my info through time machine.  How do I transfer my files to my new macbook pro?

If you want to restore all you old machine to your new MacBookPro, simply restart you computer in Recovery mode (Hold option key while restarting), select restore from Time Machine Backup, and select the latest or whatever date you like.
On the other hand if you want your new MacBook to use your old TM back, just inherit  that backup using the following command in Terminal:
    tmutil inheritbackup {machine_directory | sparsebundle}
You will find detailed instructions for inherit backups here: http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html

  • After backing up through time machine on external hard drive, how do you access that data?

I backed up my MacBook to an external hard drive through Time Machine. After it was all done and I reconnected the external hard drive to make sure that I could access everything that was backed up, I couldn't get into the data on the external hard drive because it said that it was backed up through Time Machine.
What does this mean? How to I access the data that is on my external hard drive?

    There are 2 options.
    1) (The Suggested way) With the TM external drive connected Open The Time Machine App in Applications and you can browse what has been backed up.
    2) Open Finder and select the drive name on the left then the Backups.backupsdb folder and in there is all your files from the backups you have made listed under your Machine Name and in that folder under the dates/times they were created

  • HT201250 can i back up my iTunes on one external hard drive to another external hard drive through time machine?

I have my itunes on an external hard drive which I use on my macbook. Can I back these files up through time machine onto a second external hard drive?

For TM yes, for another backup program running on the mac yes. You can avoid the NTFS issue by installing a NTFS driver in your mac: there are two proven ones: Paragon and NTFS-3G. These drivers make it possible for a mac to read and write NTFS formatted drives.
But it will not help TM (I am not 100% sure about that), but other backup apps it will help.

  • Help with iTunes database and Time Machine after Lion clean install

I did a clean install of OS X Lion and think I've given myself problems with my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup and with my iTunes Library database files.
My iMac (2007) had become very sluggish so I opted for a clean install.  Before the install of Lion my Snow Leopard 10.6.8 internal 1TB HD was at about  600GBs.  I was using Time Machine to backup to an external 1TB drive.  I had my iTunes 10.?  library on the same drive.
For the Lion install I partitioned my internal 1TB HD into two partitions - a 250GB Lion boot partition and the rest for Lion data files.
Now I  have two problems - 1.  I can't  work out how to re-connect my Time Machine backups, since they were related to a much bigger original drive, and 2.  I can't seem to find my iTunes database files.
I also don't want to restore any application files at this stage, as I'm determined to do a fresh install of only the applications I need as I go along, and hopefully  avoid the issues of sluggishness I had with Snow Leopard.
I have all my iTunes files in their pre-Lion external HD folder, but that folder does not seem to  have the iTunes Library.XML or iTunes Library files.  I didn't delete them so I'm hoping they were in my iTunes folder on my SL boot drive.  But that drive was deleted during the install, so I'll be depending on Time Machine to restore the database.
Can anyone suggest a way to deal with Time Machine for my Lion install, and a way to restore my iTunes database?  I'd like to keep as much of the Snow Leopard Time Machine data as I can, while continuing to do Time Machine backups from my Lion installation.
Anyone know where iTunes stores those database files, if not in the external drive iTunes folder? Spotlight search doesn't find the files, but is there a way to search my old Time Machine backups without having the Time Machine backups folder re-connected in Lion?
    Thanks.

My iTunes folder is organised like this if it helps:
And iTunes uses them from the Prefrences like this:

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

  • Does an external hard drive ALWAYS need to be connected to my mbp with retina display for Time Machine?

Does an external hard drive ALWAYS need to be connected to my mbp (OS 10.10.1) with retina display for Time Machine? Or can it be connected once a week or whenever I want? I used to have an external drive always connected to my previous mbp, but it made moving my mbp around a bit of a hassle with it connected...

When the backup drive is not connected, some of the free space on the internal drive will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. Local snapshots will protect you from unintended file deletions, but not from a drive failure. You should only go as long between backups as you're willing to lose data. If losing a week's worth of work is acceptable to you, then that backup frequency is OK. Otherwise, it isn't.

  • My photos disappear from my iPhoto after a crash of iPhoto, I've restored the entire iPhoto library through time machine but still i have no photos in my iPhoto

I have an iMac which I've upgraded to Yosemite. then I experienced a crash on iPhoto and needed to restore the entire (135 GB) iPhoto library through Time machine. Now I can see the iPhoto library through finder but can't move them to iphoto
Can you help me please? thanks so much!

Try the following on your library:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Time Capsule shows with wrong name on Time Machine

I changed the name of my Time Capsule using airport. However, Time Machine still shows the old Time Capsule name, with the new name underneath. When I try to back up using this disk, it shows the following error message:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Old Time Capsule name/My laptop name.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)."
I don't know how to fix this. I have looked everywhere. I deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist file in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, and even made sure to do a secure empty trash. I even did a soft reset of the Time Capsule to the factory configuration, and renamed the Time Capsule all over again. I restarted the computer several times during this process, and yet no luck, it still shows the old Time Capsule name.
Does anybody know how to fix this? Thank you!

Ok, the MacBook is backing up now. Here is what I did:
After manually changing the name of the Time Capsule Disk as above, Time Machine was still not able to back up. I kept getting the error message
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Old Time Capsule name/My laptop name.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)."
The problem is that "My laptop name" Time Machine was using is wrong. I had changed the laptop name in Network Perferences>Sharing before, but it still kept looking for the wrong .sparsebundle file in the Time Capsule. I don't know why, and I even deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist file again with no success.
I entered the Time Capsule from the Finder menu, found the .sparsebundle file with the wrong name, and manually deleted it. Finally the MacBook was able to backup. However, although the MacBook name is the same as it used to be before, and even though there was already an old .sparsebundle file with the correct name, Time Machine created a new .sparesebundle with the same name, and began an entirely new backup. I am just letting it do this backup, and then I will manually delete the old backup, so it doesn't take space on the Time Capsule. I don't need the past backups (and hope I won't swallow my words), and I am tired of dealing with this, so this will be it.

  • FileVault 2 and Time Machine recovery

    Hi,
After reading a lot of forum posts about FileVault 2, almost everything seems to be clear to me, but I still have one important question:
My Macbook Pro (on Mountain Lion) backups automatically to my Time Capsule through Time Machine. When I enable FileVault 2, and my Macbook is stolen, can I just buy a new Macbook and restore it from the (unencrypted) Time Machine backup? Or will this give problems because the 'original' Macbook the backup was made off, had FileVault enabled?
    Thanks in advance

To answer your question directly, yes, you would be able to purchase a new MacBook and restore from the unencrypted backup. The backup data is not encrypted by default, that is why you can only back up to Time Machine while logged in.
You can also choose to encrypt your Time Machine backup, in which case you would still be able to do the same thing, it would just require you to enter your Time Machine's password to start the recovery process.

  • HT3275 Since Installing a new hard drive on my 2008 macbook and reconnecting to to time capsule through time machine, I can only get backups since the install.

Since Installing a new hard drive on my 2008 macbook and reconnecting to to time capsule through time machine, I can only get backups since the install.
I receive a message saying identity of backup dis has changed and offers me the choice of either Don't back up or Use this disc.

Time Machine treats any new drive like a new computer. It starts a completely new Time Machine backup. So you now have two backups - a new one and all your old ones.
