Viewing folders in iPhoto 08

Ever since I got iPhoto 08 I have been uncomfortable because I'm unable to view individual folders (year/month/day). I don't like the closed architecture of the program either for filing or for backup. I am sure there are folders. Does anyone know how to make them visible?
Also, worried about backup. I have to backup my thousands of iPhoto files and I am nervous about taking them off my computer which is my ultimate goal in order to free up HD space.
I appreciate your help. Also, I am not using any other 3rd party software and would rather not if possible.
thx, Christine

Sure - although it is highly recommended that you do not go into the iPhoto library - it is a database and like all databases if you make any modifications via outside access you will corrupt it and may lose data
To access your folders - at your own risk - right click (control click) on the iPhoto library in your pictures folder and select the show package contents command
SInce you are still on Tiger the best and safe way to use your photos is to export them from iPhoto - Or click here for a complete discussion on the ways to access them in TIger and Leopard.

Time machine takes very good care of backing up your photos - although it is not an archival system - there is a very large difference from backing up and archiving photos so you can remove them from your main system
The best way to save hard drive space is to run your iPhoto library on an external drive
My personal suggestion would be to add an external drive, clone your system to it (SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner), upgrade to Leopard and if needed add a second external drive to store your iPhoto libra on

  • I cannot view images in iphoto - only black screen

I had problems being unable to boot my iMac this week and ended up having to take it to the Apple store where they re-installed the operating system and all seemed fine. Now however, although I can view thumbnails in iPhoto, when I click on them I just get a black screen.
I've checked the images do still exist in the file folders and I had a slideshow running as a screensaver - this still shows the images but I cannot access them through iPhoto.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Events folders in iphoto is not showing in my ipad

Events folders in iphoto is not showing in my ipad, it's showing only in imac and iphone, what can i do to make it in my ipad ?

    Probably
do they show in last import? Probably they do - then you have one of two problems
1 - incorrect event sort - correct under the view menu ==> sort events
    OR
2 - incorrect date/time setting on the camera - correct using the camera menu to set the correct date/time for future photos and the ones already imported correct by selecting them in the last import and using the adjust time/date command

  • Import existing folders into iPhoto without copying

It seems like this should be an easy function, but I can not seem to get it to work correctly.
Just got my new Mac today and am still trying to navigate around (too many years of being a Windows user!) and would like to import my photos into iPhoto. I have a TON of pictures already on an external harddrive that are already categorized into descriptive folders. I'd like to import these folders into iPhoto, but want to keep my existing folder locations. Is this possible?
In the Preferences, I turned off the "Copyfiles to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library", but it seems that it is still creating a COPY of the photos in the DATA folder in the iPhoto Library folder. But in the ORIGINALS folder, the shortcut (alias?) is pointing to the original location on my external drive, not inside the Libary folder.
Is this possible? Or do I have to import all my files (essentially creating a duplicate of all files), and then delete the original locations that I have set up?
    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
ut it seems that it is still creating a COPY of the photos in the DATA folder in the iPhoto Library folder.
These are tiny thumbnails that iPhoto uses for display.
But in the ORIGINALS folder, the shortcut (alias?) is pointing to the original location on my external drive, not inside the Libary folder.
Correct, the alias is exactly what I would expect to find.
Is this possible? Or do I have to import all my files (essentially creating a duplicate of all files), and then delete the original locations that I have set up?
This suggests to me that you've not quite grasped iPhoto, and how it differs from other apps.
It's a photo Organiser, and the idea is simple: do your organisation in the iPhoto Window and let it look after the files. Otherwise, all you need is a file organiser - put files into folders - and an image viewer. The catch with that system is that you need multiple copies if you want a pic in more that one album.
iPhoto works on the basis that where the FILES are is unimportant to you, it's the PICTURES that count. So, it, in the default setting, imports the pics to the iPhoto Library Folder and you can forget about them. Then set up your albums, smart albums etc., in the iPhoto Window. The same pic can be in 5, 50 or 500 albums with no wasted disk space.
You can very quickly recreate the filing structure you have in iPhoto: simply drag the folders of pics to the Source (or left hand) pane and iPhoto will create a new album with the same name as the folder, then create your enclosing folders in iPhoto (File -> New Folder).
Some people resist this because the feel they'll be unable to find their pics should they want them: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
You can run the iPhoto Library Folder from an external HD with no problems, just copy the iPhoto Library Folder there and then hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. Thereafter that will be the default iPhoto Library Folder.
Finally, if you choose to use iPhoto in the non-default setting, then remember iPhoto will not be responsible for the file management, you are. Therefore, you need to put the pics where they're going to live beofre importing, deleting will also be a multi-stage operation, as trashing the file in iPhoto will not remove it from your filing system. Migrating to a new machine can be more tricky as well. Frankly, I've never seen a good reason not to use the default setting, unless you're using two photo organisers.
Hope all this helps, by all means, post back if you need more info.
    Regards

  • Can't view photos in iphoto but I still can in Preview

Recently I changed some of the folder names of my photos in the iphoto library, but now when I want to view them in iphoto they are blank. I can still view them through Preview mode if I go through Finder, but that's a hassle. Also, the photos that I didn't change the folder name I can still view in iPhoto. I use iPhoto 5.
What should I do in order to get things back to normal and be able to view my photos in iphoto??

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
1 - this is the iPhoto '08 forum - your question would be better placed in the iPhoto 5 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=850 - some things work differently and here people will assume that you have iPhoto '08 and the answers may not work on iPhoto 5
What should I do in order to get things back to normal and be able to view my photos in iphoto??
2 - You should NEVER modify the iPhoto library (or any other database structure for that matter) - you should ONLY use iPhoto to change things. At this time your two choices are to put things back exactly like they were or recreate your library which will lose your edits, albums, etc

  • Can't view video in iPhoto

Can't view video in iPhoto on my iMac but I can view it on my iPad! Source of video iPhone, sent to me via email. Appears in iPhoto on my iMac as a blank folder. Using OSX 10.9.5 Maverick. Any ideas? I have the same problem with a voice recording sent to me in the same way.

That's a whole new ball game.  Go the System/iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Photos check box.
In iPhoto go to its iCloud preference pane and uncheck all checkboxes.
Reboot, and go back to each preference pane and recheck those boxes.  That should jumpstart the Shared Photo Streams.

  • Not able to view Folders in Business area.

    Hi,
User has been given access to XYZ business area from discoverer Admin but not able to view folders in Discoverer Plus (web based) but he can view the folders under same business area (ie XYZ) using Discoverer Desktop Application. Only one user is facing the problem other users with same business area (ie. XYZ) can view all the folders under that business area. User tried on other PC also but result the same.

I faced same kind of problem some time back & found JInitiator as the cause. Try unintalling older Installation of JInitiator & reinstall it & it should work.

  • Albums vs Folders from iPhoto does not show folders on Apple TV

Does anyone have a work around to assist organization of Albums on Apple TV into Folders from iPhoto. We have 12,000 images on iMac organized into 30 Folders within which are 80++ albums. When synced the Apple TV only displays albums, all Folders deleted. The consequence is having to scroll through the 80+ albums when seeking the one album you want to watch. This poor form of organization on Apple TV is really cumbersome and driving us nuts.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
The tv can use events as well as albums, although this doesn't resolve the OP's issue, which is simply one of a large number of photo albums. I have a lot of photo albums (without checking, I think I have around 250) and scrolling through them can be challenging.
What I do is to keep albums organised into groups such as 'Holidays', 'Weddings' etc and introduce a specific character at the start of the album title, which indicates which group the album belongs to.
    For example ' ☼ Marmaris 2008 ' or ' ♡ Mark and Jasmine's Wedding 1969 '
It doesn't reduce the long list of albums on the tv, but it does help to keep themed albums together in the list and so makes finding the specific album you are looking for much easier.

  • Cannot view folders in mini bridge

    Hello,
when trying to use mini bridge in ID CS6, I cannot view folders. I can look at drives, and places such as desk top, but it will only find individual image files, and cannot find any folders. As most of my assest are in folders, this is exceedingly frustrating. I remember CS5 not having this issue. Is there a preference or setting I am missing, or is this how Adobe always "improves" their products when they update.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

I have done that, but it still does not find folders. Specifically, let's say folders within folders. I mentioned that I can find places, such as desktop, but it won't find 'folders' on my desktop. Just indivdual files. Here is a screen shot of what I mean. On my desk top, I happen to have a folder of assets, but it is not finding it when I have 'desk top' highlighted in the navigation. This is a problem that there seems to be now answer for.

  • Finder not able to view folders and files on EHD after updating to OS X 10.9.4

I can see still see 'Hitachi' in the 'Devices' Sidebar, but I am not able to view folders and files on this Hitachi XL2000 2TB FAT32 Hard Drive (EHD) that is USB connected to the iMac below.
    Late 2013 Apple iMac (27-inch Display 2560 x 1440), 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB, 512GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5, Magic Trackpad, Apple Wireless Keyboard and OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks
All was fine until I updated from OS X 10.9.3 to 10.9.4 earlier this week, so now when I double-click on 'Hitachi' it just loads and loads with nothing happening and never displays the folder and file contents of the EHD.
Also, confirmed that Hitachi EHD has been removed from Spotlight indexing per System Preferences > Privacy > + > Hitachi and it was so this does not seem to be an indexing issue.
I have used OnyX and Apple Disk Utilities unsuccessfully to try and fix this problem.
Interestingly, Backblaze online backup still sees the EHD and connecting this EHD to a Win 8.1 PC also sees the EHD.
Further, I ran the commands below in 'Terminal' to make sure the drive was visible and got the following results which shows that the EHD is not hidden.
    iMac:Applications john$ chflags nohidden /Volumes/Hitachi/
    iMac:Applications john$ GetFileInfo /Volumes/Hitachi/
    directory: "/Volumes/HITACHI"
    attributes: avbstclinmedz
    modified: 07/10/2014 23:26:44
Finally, I installed XtraFinder and am still not able to see the contents of the EHD, but when I installed OmniDiskSweeper I can navigate the EHD folder tree with no problems and can see the contents of the EHD, but when I try and open up a file it opens Finder which loads and loads and nothing happens.

Apple Support was quite helpful, but in the end I will wait to do a clean install of OS X Yosemite which is due in the Fall and not try and fix OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks.
It turns out that I run backups on my '/Users/john/Library' and the size of this folder before the 10.9.4 update was 1.07 GB and after the update it is 806.9 MB which is baffling, but in the end all of these problems should be resolved with a clean install of OS X Yosemite.
One lesson learned for the future is that I will wait on installing an update until it has been in the wild for awhile as a quick OS X Mavericks Finder Problem search and similar searches show there could be an issue.

  • How do I view folders in the aperture library through finder?

How do I view folders in the aperture library. If I look in my pictures I have the applibrary there but can't access it. If I click on it it opens Aperture and I can't find a way to find the info throught aperture either.

You can browse the contents of your Aperture Library from the Finder, but better do not change anything inside.
To look inside the Aperture Library package
Reveal the package in the Finder,
right-click or ctrl-click it and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu.
You will see a folder with subfolders containing the masters, previews, and thumbnails.
The iLife Applications will let you browse the Aperture Library through the MediaBrowser, that is much safer.
    Regards
    Léonie
P.S. If your Aperture Library is referenced, not managed, you can view the master image files by selecting the image in Aperture in the Browser or film strip, ctrl-clicking it and selecting "Show in Finder".

  • How can I merge original and modified folders in iphoto library?

I see 2 folders within iPhoto library - originial and modified. Original folder keeps all pictures in original and modified has the edited version for picture I edit. So iPhoto basically keeps 2 version for any picture I modify, which takes a lot of space.
I would like to have just one copy for each picture (original picture or only modified version of the picture if I edit) - this way I think I would save a lot of memory. Could someone please advise
    1. if there is any iPhoto settings that I change, so that it starts saving only 1 copy for each picture
    2. If I could something with my already existing pictures - i.e. if there is a way I can delete "original" version of only those pictures for which "modified" version is available.
Let me know if anything is not clear or you need any more information. Thanks in advance.

    Don't use iPhoto.
Iphoto is a Digital Asset Manager designed to protect your original file at all costs. In other words it treats the original like a film shooter treats the negative. This is hard-wired into iPhoto, it's the very heart of the programme. If you don't want that feature, don't use iPhoto/
Note that there are different versions of the photo, they are not copies. The Original is required for the Non-Destructive editing feature in iPhoto.
So, specifically, no you cannot merge the two folders - and by the way, doing so won't save any memory at all, just some diks space.
    1. if there is any iPhoto settings that I change, so that it starts saving only 1 copy for each picture
    There isn't.
    2. If I could something with my already existing pictures - i.e. if there is a way I can delete "original" version of only those pictures for which "modified" version is available.
    There isn't.
If space is an issue: use an external drive for the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Or, just use an app that works the way you want.

  • Want to view Photos from iPhoto on TV set

I purchased Composite AV Cable from the Apple Store and was told that this was all I needed to view pictures from iPhoto on my TV. It didn't work because the TV didn't recognize the iPhone , so I returned the cable. Later I spoke to a friend and was told that I also needed a docking station in addition to the AV cable to view pictures on the TV.
Before I drive back to the Apple store, does anyone know if this will work. I have an iPhone 3G and I want to view pictures on an older TV set.
    Thanks,

As long as you have composite input on your TV (and know how to set your TV to use that input, of course), you can view your photos from the iPhone. No need for a dock. But you must +carefully read+ the description of the cable's function, which states, +"Connect an iPod or iPhone to your television with the Apple Composite AV Cable, gather up your friends, and watch videos or slideshows together on the big screen."+
Slideshows, not photos. You must launch the Photos app, select an album (or the Library) then tap the Play button to start a slideshow. That's what is output to the TV, not just whatever picture (or other activity on the screen) is displayed - just slideshows and videos.
