Viewing folders on a mac with a pc on the shared network

Hi guys,
my friend and I are trying to share files over the network. he has a pc and I have a mac i have no problem viewing his folders that he shares however he can't view mine that I am sharing... Is it possible to rectify that?

Ok, figured it out... knew it would be a simple fix once discovered. Go to your Sharing settings under System Preferences. At the top of the Sharing box you should see your Computer Name. Just below the name to the right there should be an Edit button. Click the edit button and then check the box that says *Use dynamic global hostname*, then enter a hostname, user and password below. Go back to your pc, and refresh your network screen and you should see your mac. Hope this helps.

As above, how do I go about hidding the MAC Mini from appearing on the shared network which is able to seem by other? I had already disable the file sharing under the sharing? What I want to achieve is to totally prevent the MAC Mini from appearing on the shared network as the network I am connecting to is public network. Between I am runnning OS X.

As far as I'm aware of you can't without disabling a couple of things that'll also prevent any internet usage, since it's all tied together now.

Finally got round to buying an iPhone 4, really excellent to start with. The sharing of music from my Mac Mini was excellent. ios6 update has ruined all that! The artist view miss's out most of my music and the sharing sometimes doesn't work at all!

How do I get this feature working again? I am reluctant to move to iTunes 10.7 because I don't trust Apple at the moment.

My suggestion:
1) Always using MAC AIR with the power plug in.
2)Don' let the power level of battory fall under 30% percentage.
3)If the MAC can't be recharged now, just let it be with power plugged, WAIT...

Macs with Filesharing Turned on Appearing on Networks Through the WAN Port

I am trying to find out why it is that Macs that have filesharing turned on are appearing on people's network even when they are not on the same LAN.
We run a small ISP in our town and have about 180 client sites that we service. I had a call from a client panicking because he could suddenly see unknown devices showing up in the Finder under Shared Devices. He could even see someone else's iTunes Library available for sharing, etc. This of course makes no sense, because although obviously all clients are technically on the same physical network, each client site has its own router, and is therefore behind a router.
(And please do not comment about people getting onto his Wi-Fi, or else the bug in the Mac OS that sometimes does not release devices from the shared devices section even after they are gone from the network. This is NOT any of these situations. Please read on...).
Initially I was convinced that he has opened up some port that he should not have. To test this I went to this client site, reset the router to clear any unwanted programming and plugged in my Mac directly into the WAN port of his router. And sure enough I appeared on his network. If I turned filesharing off, then I would disappear (which makes sense), but point is that with filesharing turned on, I seemed to be going through the router's firewall. Also interestingly enough, this penetration only seemed to be in one direction. That is WAN -> LAN, but not LAN -> WAN (I could not ever see any of HIS machines). Also, while I would appear on his network, I was not accessible by him. He could not actually connect to me.
Is this happening because of Bonjour? If so, can I block Bonjour by closing some ports or protocols? But I also do not want to do that if it will cause any other applications from getting through that should be getting through (although I do not understand why Bonjour should be broadcasting through a firewall anyway).

The best test I can suggest is to access when the Security Gateway is up and you are on the same LAN network as the ADT setup. If that works, unless the feeds are routed through some ADT server, the WAN side can be tested next. The ADT Gateway will not have a public IP for you to access. Do you have a link to a manual, or a the ADT model number of the gateway, so I can take a look at the setup guide?
The normal setup is
ISP <-> WAN IP <LAN Router/Gateway/Modem> <-> AEBS <Ethernet> ADT Gateway (LAN IP).
LAN IPs are typically hidden from the world and are private IPs like 192.168.1.x ro 192.168.0.x or 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x.

I can access my Vista PC folders form my MAC but can't see the Docs within

Just got my first MAC and love it.
I do however have loads of files on my VISTA PC that I am trying to access from it. I have set-up sharing so I can see the Vista Machine and Folders from my MAC, however the Folders always seem empty ie. I can open the Vista Folder but can;t see what's in it.
Any ideas?

Is the Vista PC asking for a Password? It should & needs to be setup for one if not.
Also, what happens when in the Finder>Go menu>Connect to Server, and then type the ip of the vista pc in the windows, like...

Sync isn't a "cloud service" to back up miscellaneous user selected files. Only specific Firefox user data and preferences are synchronized.

Why does my iPad mini refuse to connect to the shared network connection from my mac mini?

Sometimes it works, most of the time it just sits there "searching" with the little wheel just spinning away. I've tried resetting the network settings under the "General" tab as well as "forget this network" and have no password set, and still I get spinning. iPad Mini and Mac Mini are both up to date with software and have no current updates available. The iPad is only a couple of feet away from the Mac without anything but air between them. I have tried turning of wi-fi on iPad and back on again as well as turning off sharing and back on again and every combination I could think of and it's still spinning. I thought buying all apple products would make things easier to configure but that was totally WRONG.

I managed to get the connection back! I renamed the network under "Wi Fi Options" from the "Sharing" screen and told the iPad Mini to forget the network. I then restarted BOTH the iPad and the Mac Minis at the SAME TIME. When they finished restarting the iPad Mini saw and connected to the new network almost immediately.

Viewing a document created on ios on my Mac with Pages 5.0 wihtout sharing via icloud?

I have Pages 5.0 on my ios device and Mac. When I create a document on my Mac in Pages it will automatically appear on my Pages app on my ios. But when I create a docuemnt on my ios it will not generate on my Mac. I'm pretty sure it used to do this before 5.0.
I know I can share my documents via icloud and pull it up on my browser, but I don't want to have to edit documents on my browser. I'd imagine there has to be a way of just using the Pages app and Pages on my Mac. Is there not a way to pull up the documents I created on Pages on my iso on Pages on my Mac?
It sounds like there have been problems with the upgrade to 5.0. As I mentioned, I believe that it used to automatically generate documens created on my ios on my Mac when my computer would start. Is this soemthign I could solve to downgrading. Or am I not doing something correctly?

It seems as though your documents are syncing to iCloud properly but don't seem to be making their way to your Mac.
Have you tried disabling pages in your iCloud settings, restarting your Mac then re-enabling pages in iCloud.

I can't access my university VPN with my iPad or iPhone but I can access it with my Mac. I was wondering if there is a simple way so that I can remotely access my home computer from the iPad, turn on the Mac VPN and then access the school network?

The iosx and open VPN app on the iPad/phone aren't compatible w my school's VPN, but my Mac is via tunnelblick. I would really like to have VPN access from my tablet so I can access journals without undergoing a tedious process.
Has anyone encountered this and found a remedy? I'm imagining an app from the tablet that can access the Mac at home to turn on the VPN to the school and then have access.. But then I'm thinking id be reading through 2 screens then formatting/resolution could be a problem.
Another thought was setting up a VPN at home so that my iPad can connect to my computer at home via VPN which would then allow me easy access to journals. But I'm lacking experience in this, especially a security issue as I'm going from point A to point C to get back to point B.
I'm open to any suggestions.

You should be able to use the OpenVPN Connect app running on your iPad to connect your iPad to the VPN directly. It is an official OpenVPN client for iOS devices.
In what way is it "not compatible"? Have you tried it? Tunnelblick is an OpenVPN client, so your school's VPN is using the OpenVPN protocol. That means any OpenVPN client should be able to access it. (It is possible, but unlikely, that your school uses encryption that is not available on the iPad, but that would be very unusual.)
Otherwise, a remote control app on your iPad would let you control your Mac at home. "Back to My Mac", for example, would allow you to control your Mac remotely. The tricky part of this is that usually a VPN is set up to send all Internet traffic via the VPN server, and I'm not sure how that would work with "Back to My Mac".

Copy everything from your old computer to your new one then sync.
Iphone will sync with one library/computer at a time. Syncing to another will indeed erase the current content.

DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

The P/b is an older/slower CPU and takes over three times
longer to render (i.e. 36 hours instead of 10 on my quicksilver) so if I can edit on the P/b while the P/m is rendering the big stuff, I won't have so much downtime.. (trying to avoid the constant copy back and forth sinario)..

But we got too far off topic (shame on me) so thanks for getting us back.
you can move the drive back and forth between the two
computers. You just can't have both of the them access the
drive at the same time.
The way I'm currently doing it - I have the 2 F/w drives connected to both Macs and I either power up only one at a time or mount/dismount/swap cables as needed. I was hoping there would be a way it could be done - NOT to write to the same files at the same time, that's a given, but to be able to continue working on another project, or part of the same project, while the Q/s (which is dual and much faster than the P/b) is rendering..
