Viewing HD on SD monitor... something amiss

Is this normal? I have a ProRes Compressor setting in Sequence settings and DVC Pro HD as my sequence setting. I am viewing on an SD monitor using a Firewire cable attached to a DSR-25. Far as I know this deck does not have any downconvert settings for HD to DV. How am I able to view this. It is keeping up with every frame, over a network even... Is that what ProRes does? It isn't premium quality or anything... that is... I wouldn't try to color correct with it... but I am just surprised I can see anything at all... Did I miss a memo or something...?

I thought FCS2 allowed for HD formats to be monitored in SD. I found this in the manual under new features in FCP 6/External Video Monitoring. Not sure this helps. Perhaps the sequence compressor setting needs to be set to SD uncompressed.
External Video Monitoring
You can now output to external video interfaces whose settings don’t match those of
your sequence. Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
A DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device. Also, when an output device does not match your
sequence settings, additional real-time processing is required. This means that
segments that already require a lot of real-time processing power may need to be
rendered to play back.

I notice that all except "play base layer" of my "RT" settings in the timeline are grayed out.
In system settings, RT, Video Quality, and Frame rate can be changed.
I can view playback of my viewer, on the TV monitor.
I've "refreshed video devices" in >view >video out,

  • Problem viewing vdo stream on monitor...

While scrolling forward the playhead in FCP the vdo stream that is sourced to the TV monitor freezes into frames and skips few frames and cannot be viewed as well as it can be viewed on the PC monitor. Would appreciate if someone could enlighten me with the solution? Many Thanx.

Review your View Menu / External Video. It must sitted at 'all frames'.

  • Display disappearing in viewer and in ext monitor

I am at my second project using Color, so I'm pretty new to it.
The first time it worked out fine.
This time I am encountering a strange problem.
I send the project from FCP, it takes me a couple of times to get it to open in Color, but I finally make it.
Once in Color I start grading my shots. As soon as I drag a grade from one shot to another though, the displays disappear, either my external display than the one in the viewer on my computer monitors, and there's nothing I can do to get it back. I have to resend the project back from FCP, just to have the same problem occur.
Anybody has any idea why it's doing that?
    Thanks

Nope. We aren't looking over your shoulder so how can we tell based upon the information you've not given?
It would nice to know what video format you're working with. It would be nice to know if you've followed the stringent rules for prepping your sequences for Color. It would be nice to know your equipment software/hardware infrastructure.
But to throw a guess out there, since you're using a G5, I'm guessing your video card is substandard and not liking what you're using for video.

  • Problems with viewing screens in multiple monitor configurations

Sorry if this is already posted somewhere, but after searching for 45 minutes, I couldn't find an answer.
Since upgrading an iMac to 10.5.7 I've had problems viewing over remote desktop. The iMac has a second display (20 inch Cinema Display) and mirroring is off. Before the upgrade, selecting which monitor to view was a snap. After upgrading, if I select one monitor after about 3 seconds is switches to a 2 monitor view. It doesn't matter which monitor I choose. When it displays both monitors simultaneously, the extra monitor's screen will flash every 3-5 seconds (via ARD, not in reality) and the mouse connection will freeze for about a half second.
Obviously, this makes controlling the machine difficult.
I've trashed all screen sharing and ARD related preferences on the machine without solving the problem.
If I turn off remote administration in the system settings and activate screen sharing, everything works fine (but I lose the other important features of ARD). No other computers on the network have a similar problem - but this is the only machine with 2 monitors. If I turn on mirroring, I still have the problem of the mouse control freezing every few seconds. I assume the connection is being dropped and refreshed.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    -Ben

    Same thing here.
From the instructor workstation I can see any of the lab computers when viewing both of their monitors. When I try to look at just one monitor all I see is a black screen.
The video mode on the instructor workstation seems to be important. The instructor station has a second monitor that is a 1024x768 video projector. We like to have video mirroring on, of course. But in this mode, the student's screen always displays black.
If I switch mirroring off, I get the same thing IF I pull up the student's screen on the projector display. But I can see it if I pull it up on the local display. And it still shows when I move it over to the second display. However, if it's on the projector display and I try to select a different display it goes black.
But the whole thing is kinda flakey. Sometimes it works one way, sometimes it doesn't.
It works better if I set the resolution on the external display to 1600x1024. But that looks badly stretched on the screen.
All of this started happening with the latest ARD update.
I tried the same thing from a MacBook and it works great.
I suspect that it is a mismatch between ARD and the video card in the iMac. (Model Identifier: iMac7,1). The Video card is ATI, RadeonHD2600.

  • As a baseball coach how can I view Ubersense on a monitor?

How do I view Ubersense  on a monitor from my iPad?

Hi, I'm not sure of what you mean by monitor - your computer monitor, a monitor at a facility, a projector screen, etc. There are different solutions for each of these. So see if this link below helps. Also note, that you'd want to have the ubersense videos in your camera rollon your ipad (Ubersense site might help you with that.) Also, if you decide on the Apple tv option, it's small, wireless and very portable.

  • Final Cut Pro X will not playback viewer contents on external monitor

Tried to follow directions to Playback the Final Cut ProX Viewer on a separate monitor.
Option Window > A/V Output greyed out. how do I use a second Monitor to view results?

Typically you need A/V output hardware from AJA or Blackmagic (and they are recommended for various reasons) but if you want to use your TV or display as a second monitor and also use them for FCP X playback then the trick is to disable the Mavericks feature in Mission Control: "Displays have separate spaces"

  • Viewing on SD external monitor through Z1

    Hello all,
I posted this same message a few months ago but then went away so it went off the boil, hence my repost so apologies for that. Here's my problem, I'm trying to colour correct on my broadcast monitor. Initially the project was HDV but i downconverted to SD. I have connected my Z1 through firewire 400 to the computer and then the Camera is connected to the monitor by an S-Video cable. I have done this before with a PD170 and it has worked fine, but with the Z1 i get no signal on the camera or monitor. The monitor says no Sync, but if i try and play back a tape from the camera it shows up on the monitor.
My settings for the Z1 are
    Rec Format – DV
    Rec Mode – Dvcam
    Component - 576i
    i.link conversion – on
    Down Convert – Squeeze
    A/V - DV out - on
I have checked that View is on firewire pal and that it is all frames. So i'm kinda confused any help would be much appreciated.
    Fred

I'm pretty sure the HDV cameras won't do this even though you've down converted. i.e. the hardware to transcode DV digital coming into the FW port on the camera to analog isn't there. You'll need something else. The coolest thing I've seen for HDV users to monitor externally with is Matrox's MXO... very cool little box. That way you could monitor the HDV in SD all day long.
But if you're going to down convert to DV anyway, then an ADVC-110 will do the trick.

  • Viewing on an external monitor?

I currently use an AJA T-tap to view my output on an external monitor. I have heard that with the new Mac Pro I can view pixel to pixel using HDMI. Is that true? And how do you do it? No longer a need for the T-Tap?
    Best.
    Tom

Yes, you can do AV monitoring in the new Mac Pro straight off the HDMI port.
Just plug a full HD or even 4K monitor with an HDMI cable.
Note however that this capability is, so far, on the Mac Pro only; although the Retina MBP also have an HDMI port, and you can connect a second display to it, you'd still need something like the AJA T-tap to do true AV monitoring.

  • Viewing on external NTSC monitor

Here is my setup, I have a Dual 2.7 GHz G5 with a X800XT 256 MB video card with ADC and DVI outs. I had an older card in there with 2 DVI's connectors and one of them had a DVI to Video Adapter to the NTSC and all was fine.
When I got the new video card I had to plug the LCD into the DVI connector and I installed an older ATI Radeon PCI card to runt he NTSC monitor. Not sure what model the the older card is but it does have an svideo out and DVI out. I have tried with the NTSC monitor plugged into the DVI connector with the DVI to Video adapter and plugged directly into the svideo out. Plugged into the DVI and adaptor the video is distorted and unusable plugged in directly to the Svideo port the video works fine but I can't get Final Cut or anything else to recognize it as the NTSC video out device.
My thought is that either the PCI card I have is too old for the Apps to recognize it, or that the Apps with only work with the primary AGP graphics Card.
Has anyone else had this problem? and is there an easy solution?
I have a ADC to DVI adaptor on order to give my new video card dual DVI outputs hopping that will fix the issue.
    thanks
    Ken

Easy solution...don't do this. Route the signal thru your deck or camera:
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Viewing video on external monitor

Using an external monitor. I am able to view the desktop on this monitor. However, I am unable to view my video on this monitor. What "Preference" settings do I need to enable me to view my video. Using Final Cut Pro 4.5. External monitor is JVC TM1400SU.

I have the first selection as "None" followed by the others
4 -Digital Cinema Desktop Preview selections. None
is selected. (Is that the default setting?) I don't
see a selection for my external monitor.
    G4 1.25 FW800 Mac OS X (10.4.3)
Wow -- slow down and read the posts.
Hook up your external monitor BEFORE starting FCP.
    Start FCP
View - External Video -- ALL FRAMES
View - Video Playback -- Apple Firewire (etc.) Use one of these based on where you are from and the size of your video.
DO NOT use desktop preview!! You'll be messed up and have NO way of figuring out how to get out of it.
    then...
View - Audio Playback -- Take your pick from the three... but make sure you've got all the correct buttons on your external source configured correctly.
Take your time and read the posts. You'll get it figured out.

  • Viewing ipad1 on external monitor

    Hi,
I realize I cannot "mirror" everything I see on my ipad1 on an external monitor. I'm able to view videos on my external monitor using my VGA adapter, but the video is not displayed on my ipad at the same time. Is this possible for videos?
    Thanks!
    ~Frank

Different devices you're using. The VGA is for the basic normal projector, while the HDMI is primarily on HD TV sets. I'm sure there are some HDMI projectors out there, but the vast majority are VGA. (One of the funnier moments of the iPad2 keynote was Jobs describing all the teachers mirroring on the flat screen TV's in their classrooms - since then I've gone to a number of educational technology conferences and meetings, and have yet to find a teacher with a flatscreen instead of a VGA projector ).
I believe the VGA can't output the full HD image, while of course the HDMI can.

  • How can I view on external NTSC monitor in PRCS6?

NOTE: I've aksed this quesion before on this forum and followed the kind suggestions given, however, I have not yet been successful. Note that I can view my timeline on my external broadcast monitor just fine in FCP .. anyone??

    Hi Steven,
    Thanks for jumping in.
I cannot find "Enable Transmit" anywhere under any menu ... just for clarity, I have CS6, not PRCC.
As a side note - not sure why this should be an issue at all, and why it is not readily explained by Adobe ... there does not seem to be any aswers anywhere from Adobe, or online also for that matter. Seriousely, anyone who's an editor is going to want to view their work in an extenral NTSC monitor, and not on the computer display ...
    Many thanks

  • Frozen when view on external video monitor HELP

Hi everyone, I have just finished my biggest project in 3 months. Thankx for all your helps & I love the MULTICAM feature very much.
Now i'm on the second project. This project was shot on DigiBeta PAL.
To make it short: does anyone has a frozen picture as they play it out to the external video monitor for the uncompress 10bit file?
3months ago when I digitized in as uncompress 10bit , fcp play out to external monitor FINE, including the multicam feature.
However, since I need to work with 10cam at the same time, I have to capture in as DV (my source was DVCAM) so fcp can play all 10cam in multiclip mode. everything went perfect.
TOday, I capture my sources both NTSC & PAL, they can only play in the mac monitor but not the external video monitor. feeding out to external monitor make the clips freeze. the picture is frozen but the audio still playing.
My drives are fast enough since we had been working with these MEDEA drives for years.
    thank you so much.

thankx for all your helps but I had tried all those before I post the question. I'm no newbie. It must be FCP's bug. I trashed the pref & select 8bit instead of 10bit for viewing, & it play ok for single clip. On multiclip, it shutter alittle bit. Maybe I need to reinstall fcp. Don't know yet.
    thankx
