Viewing HDTV without having to capture first

Maybe someone at this forum can help me out ...
I've been trying all day to watch HDTV on my new G5 w/ 30" display. My cable box has a firewire output which I use to connect to the G5. AV/V can detect the cable box; Virtual DVHS can connect to the cable box & record .m2t videoclips.
But how can I just watch TV without having to record first??? I just want to be able to tune through channels, not playback a file saved to disk.
Just like FCP's log & capture window lets us watch a tape without having to capture. Is there an app that can playback live streams, not just recorded ones?

The box has component & DVI & USB & composite.
However the signal is some interlaced variant of HD ... it's Time Warner cable ... and so I can't use composite.
I tried hooking the monitor's DVI cable the the box, but didn't get an image. Maybe I need to also hook the monitor's USB & firewire cables to the box instead of the G5 tower?

Is there any way to play content from my iphone 5s to my HDTV without having internet?

I am moving to an area of coastal New England this week that is secluded and is not serviced by internet or cable and satellite is shoddy as well. I have an an iphone 5s with unlimited data and it gets good enough service to use itunes or stream netflix. But I would like to use airplay or mirror to stream Netflix from my phone to my samsung TV. I originally thought you could use Apple TV with apple devices and not need internet to do so, but I was wrong. Is there anyway to make this work?

Yes you can stream to ATV without internet acess but your plan is not going to work. First off you will burn though your bandwidth limits on your phone is about a hour or two, maybe a day at best. Second, it would be WAY to slow and be jerky video at best. Third AirPlay can not display copyrighted video. So video from sources like HBO, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc get blocked because the copy right holders require it.
Your best bet might be to store shows on your iPhone, iPad, or laptop. You will also need a router to act as a go between. And it will likely still be some what low quality doing it this way.

Now that you know it's "possible" you can spare me your lackluster intellectual idioms since it should be obvious that having to embed an image first to overprint it, is, well, very Adobe-ish. Don't become your arch-rival Stuart McCoy who was denouncing multiple artboards in Illustrator and look where that got him.

How do I open mail attachment without having to save first

I have an iMac with Maverick 10.9.2 and mail version 7.2. I am trying to switch over from my laptop to using the iMac exclusively. The laptop mail version is 4.6. In that version, when I receive an email with an attachment, there's a little icon of the attachment that I can just click on and open it. In the new version (7.2), there's no little icon. Instead, if i click on the attachment, it just shows a file name and I'm forced to choose to "save as" before I can open it. Is there a way to set up my preferences so i can see the icon and click to open without saving?

Open a message that contains attachments.
Then hover your mouse over that line that separates the body of the message from the "To, From, Subject Line." On that line in the center, you are given a few options. Trash, Reply, Forward, and the attachments. Click on the attachments and down at the bottom of that list. You can select the "Quick Look". With the list, you can click on each attachment directly and given an option to download it.

The fix will be to your email setup, or browser, or something like that. Can't always be fixed.

The digitization of data has introduced a complexity to our interactions with it that we continue to struggle with. "Picture" and "Photo" now mean different things in different contexts. In this case (and in general) defining our terms clearly is the first step towards understanding what we are trying to do. Understanding is the path that allows us to do it.

You record a set of instantaneous data with a camera.
That data is processed by your camera and saved to a file.
The file format is usually either RAW or JPG.
You transfer those files to your computer, and you import them into the program Aperture (often in one operation).
From each camera-file imported, Aperture creates a record in its database (called, imho unhelpfully, a Library) and an Image that you see in the Aperture Browser and Viewer.
Aperture links the Image and the imported file.
The imported file is called, within Aperture, an Original.
Every Image has an Original.
The Image is not the Original. The Image is what you see in Aperture.
The Original is a file that is stored on your computer.
You can make changes to an Image.
Aperture calls these changes Adjustments.
Adjustments are saved to another file attached to the record in the database. Let's call this file the Changes File.
Aperture uses these two files attached to the record in the database to create the Image.
Image = Original + Changes File.
The Image is not a file.
Because the Image is not a file, it cannot be shared with other programs. It exists only inside of Aperture.
In order to share an Image with another program, you must first create a file of the Image.
You do this by exporting Images ("File ▹ Export ▹ Version" is the command in Aperture; should be, imho, "File ▹ Export ▹ Image").
You may ask, "Why all the complexity? Why doesn't Aperture save Images as files?" The answer is simple: Images can require less — and in many cases very very much less — storage space than files of Images. Rather than save a full-size file for every Image, Aperture saves only instructions on how to make that full-size file. The gain in storage efficiency is huge. The trade-off is that although your Images are always available to be made into share-able files, you must create those files when needed (which you do by exporting selected Images).

No, there is not. Images exist only in Aperture, and are not accessible for use in other programs. You must create, for each Image in your Aperture Library, a new file outside of your Aperture Library in order to use it with another program.
Aperture does allow you to create and save within your Library share-able files of your Images. These files are called Previews. You specify the file parameters in Aperture Preferences on the Previews tab. These files are available to other programs via the OS X Media Browser. These files are what you get when you drag selected Images out of the Aperture program and drop them on another program or on your desktop (which is part of the Finder).

Is there a way to display a full calendar popup with time stamp so the users can pick the timestamp from the popup?Date Picker doesn't have this feature. You can use Javascript to achieve the same. But at same time it's highly unrecommended to use javascript with OAF pages.

Can Thunderbird be set up to only view messages from a shared account, without having the possibility of altering the emails, folders of that account?

I have one account setup as POP3 on one laptop.
I want another user (supervisor) to be able to ONLY VIEW the emails (Inbox, Sent, Folders) from the first laptop.
I've set up the account as IMAP on the supervisor's laptop. The supervisor is not very tech-wise, so it happened in the past to read emails from that account (and forget to mark them as unread), send emails from the account (composing email while having selected the wrong account), even delete emails. Not to mention the fact that the mails would show up as read on the first laptop if they were read on the supervisor's laptop.
So i'm trying to find a way to have another user, checking the account as VIEW ONLY, without beeing able to affect the account itself.

Thunderbird knows nothing of "Read Only", which is not all that surprising for a personal mail client.
Perhaps you can do what you need using operating system controls on ownership and access to the files in the profile folder.

Just wondering if there was a way to view the fonts available without having going through everyone first to see what they look like? Perhaps there is a site out there with images of the fonts?

Can I view a single page of a document, previously created in Microsoft Word, in its entirety on the screen (ipad or iphone) without having to drag the page, i.e. one page per screen?

Not exactly.
You will find yourself nudging the page up or down a bit. Earlier versions of iOS Pages allowed "full page view" but that really wasn't full page either. You can squeeze the view to fit, but as soon as you release it, the document springs back to normal size - it is only about a line off from what you are looking for.
An alternative would be to view a Pages Document as a PDF and view the PDF in an app such as GoodReader - there you can see both the top and bottom edges of each page. There are many other PDF viewers available in the App Store.
