Viewing image and layer mask?

Hi, thanks for stopping by and reading.
I've a layer with a group of people on it over a layer with a background on it.
The layer with the people has a layer mask which I've worked on to cut the people out...
Now I want to work round the cut out edge (layer mask) subtly refining it.
The image is going to be printed large so I need to pay attention to the detail... like strands of hair.
Intuitively (to me) I cut more hair off as opposed to left more hair on - if you follow. Perhaps unconciously thinking it was the way to minimse work because if it looks ok then job done.
Now of course I'm effectively working blind as I seek to refine the mask by adding-in soft blurred hair. (Hope you follow) So...
Q: Is there a way to view the entire original image with the mask overlaid?
I've come up with a working fix... I'm duplicating the layer with the mask, deleting the mask and adjusting the opacity so I can work through this new layer onto the layer mask below.... should I have approached this differently... more elegantly? Hind sight is a marvelous thing.
How do sensible people approach this exercise..?
Hope you'll share, thank you and keep well.

Hi MTSTUNER & J Maloney
I really appreciate the interest you've both taken in the question.
Yes, J Maloney you would be correct. I was wanting to see the whole of the image, the masked bits and the not masked bits... as well as the mask too all simultaneously.
I'm currently kicking myself that I've not explored the Masks panel. Don't know when it was introduced, I have kind of skipped a version of PhotoShop or two on my own machine - lame excuse, I know gov. The density idea is far more elegant than my solution. However, I did find that by creating the duplicate I've been able to colourise it so as to make the results of what I was doing really obvious visually. I like the invert idea too, so simple - and it might prove the best of the options... but I'll try it on another image as I've pretty much done this one - lots of hats, not much hair.
No offence on the "last paragraph". My reaction was "it's not unasked" though I wasn't clear: "How do sensible people approach this exercise?"
Thank you too MSTUNER, I appreciate the time spent.
"Quick Mask?" occurred randomly to me. Something I've never bothered with, tending to go straight to Layer Mask work. I'll own up that Quick Mask has never managed to make itself part of my workflow, I've no idea why because I'm sure it should if I gave it time. However, a quick experiment hasn't produced a Eureka moment. I was hoping I could easily subtract or add a Quick Mask from/to an existing Layer Mask... nope, doesn't seem to want to - though it was a 'quick' experiment.
Thank you again for taking the time and enjoy the rest of your day. Regards.

  • Problem for viewing Image and "\n" on Alert

    Good day.
    I made a Midlet MIDP 1.0 CLDC 1.0 that have an Image on Alert class;
    this is my code:
    Alert al = new Alert("AppTitle");
    try {
    al.setImage(Image.createImage("/MyApp/myimg.jpg"));
    } catch (java.io.IOException e) {
    al.setTimeout(3000);
    al.setType(AlertType.INFO);
    display.setCurrent(al);
    On Nokia Phones (I've tried Series 40 e 60) the result is that I view on text area Information and near of it (but cutted) the image.
    Why?
    I have another question:
    If I use on Alert class
    al.setString("MyApp\nMyName");
    within or eithout image On Nokia phones the "\n" idn't considered.
    Both problems in others phones (I've tried Motorola and Sony-Ericsson) aren't.
    Why?
    Best regards and good work.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashing when working on image with layer mask

    I've never had problems with Photoshop CS3 (or any other version) until now.
    Here's the problem:
    I created an image that has a layer mask applied to it. The image is saved in one layer (named Layer One) but not flattened in order to retain a transparent background. So far so good.
    But when I try to exapnd the canvas or make other changes to the image, it crashes. Repeatedly.
    Do I have to apply the mask (and thus give up the transparency) to prevent crashes?
    I did find a workaround. Applied the mask, made a cast drop shadow (which is what I was after all along), then copy-and-pasted the drop shadow into the original layer-masked image with transparent background.
    But is this the only way? Am I experiencing a bug or is something else wrong?
    Thanks!

  • Saving image and layer separately with transparent background

    I have a photo with a layer and I am trying to save two images (main photo and layer) with transparent background. I am able to save the  main photo with transparent background but somehow not able to save the layer with transparent background despite selecting the option while saving as PNG. Any help will be appreciated?

    OK... I'm probably not being clear.
    When I import the PDF, I get a typical architect's line drawing as shown below. So the background is displaying as white. In Corel, when you save a GIF or a PNG, you can specify that -everything- that is the 'background colour' is rendered as transparent. IOW: there's no need to erase the 'white' pixels; they are auto-magically converted to transparent.
    But in PS (CS4), no matter what I try, the rendered PNG or GIFs show as white, rather than transparent.
    Is there a way to have this same behaviour in PS? Or do I first have to use the erase or background erase tools to get rid of the white?

  • Looking for a Hi Res solution for viewing images and for capturing video

    We are looking to complete some training videos that utilize a microscope, a Sony Firewire camera (1/3-inch Progressive Scan Color CCD 1024x768 Pixel Array). I want to capture the video on a macbook (imovie or FCE) and be able to make some training DVDs.
    In addition, I need to purchase a monitor (cinema display??) that would allow people to view the manipulation from the microscope.
    Whay type of setup am I looking at ? Will the Apple Cinema display work for this and give a hi res image on it?
    I am not familar with the displays or the desired setup (the video out on the macbook be acceptable as the video comes in from the camera or does the camera go directly to the monitor?
    ny insight would be appreciative. Thank you

    Hi jforsberg,
    What we need to know is that microscope have a video out or practically you use the Sony to capture the video thru microscope using custom tripod or camera holder?
    If using you Sony is the case, then you can use iMovie for that, and you can view it "live" while you capture (import) it by selecting the input menu to your sony like shown here by EZJIM:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1091996&tstart=25
    And you can mirror the screen from macbook to bigger external screen using mini DVI adapter. There are three option mini dvi to vga, mini dvi to dvi, and mini dvi to video, and if you want to use apple cinema display I believe you have to buy the mini dvi to dvi.
    And apple said that macbook can drive up to 23" cinema display with 1440 x 900 resolution, but other user on macbook forum reportedly can use with other bigger screen and bigger resolution as well.
    Best way is you visit apple store and buy that adapter and have it tested with both 23" and 30" (I believe apple guy won't mind considering you are a potential cinema display buyer).
    Good Luck.

  • Importing Images and Making Mask's with shape's "HELP PLEASE"

    Hey,
    So two things, I have Motion 3 and every time I try to import my photos from Aperture into motion, motion stretches my photo out. The photos are regular jpeg res around 2304-1536 is this to high of a resolution, any tips? Last thing, so I want to import a whole bunch of photos into motion and make kinda a montage with the photo's but in a shape of a heart (valentines day) I cant seem to mask the heart that motion has in it's library to a photo how do you do this and can I mask a group of pics as a heart shape?
    Thanks so much!

    Yes, the picture may be a bit too large and you will asking Motion to a bit of unnecessary heavy lifting.
    However do you want the heart to mask the entire montage? If so apply to the group containing the photos.

  • Display of PS files w/layer masks in Aperture

    I frequently use the "open in external editor" command to edit images in PS. Mostly, this works very well and I'm able to view the edited image in Aperture without a problem. However, for some images with layer masks created in PS, when I save them and return to Aperture only the layer mask is visible (not the image as it should appear). Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a bug, or intentional? Any way around it?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi,
    I've seen this too. I think it is the bug related to displaying PS-files in 10.4.6
    see: http://www.completedigitalphotography.com/?p=422#more-422
    We can just hope 10.4.7 deals with it.

  • Question about brightening images and automating layers

    I've been using Photoshop CS5 for a while now but there are still a few things I'm wondering about.
    The first is about brightening an image without adding or reducing too much contrast at the same time.  If I increase the Brightness slider in the Brightness/Contrast window it often adds too much unwanted contrast and will wash out parts of the image or cause too much saturation.  Same thing when using Curves to brighten the image.  On the other hand I've found that using Levels to brighten the image reduces too much contrast and desaturates the image too much...and then when I add more contrast in afterward, parts of the image will become washed out again.  So far the best solution I've found has been to brighten the images with Shadows/Highlights, but this will often pose its own set of problems by creating or eliminating shadows in a way that doesn't flatter the image.  It can also add too much contrast in some cases.  Is there any other way around this that I'm missing?  Or is this all to be expected when brightening images?  The only other workaround I've found has been to add in separate un-affected layers for the areas of the picture that become too washed out when the brightness is increased but then there's always a problem of getting those parts of the picture to match up with the rest afterward.
    The second is about having layers for each change applied to an image.  Is there any way to have each change that is applied to an image automatically also be made into its own separate layer?  For example, if I sharpen a part of the image that would automatically become layer 2, then if I adjusted the saturation that would automatically become layer 3 and so on.  I know the History Panel does something very similar to this, and that's the type of thing I'm looking for, but I'd like each of those changes being made into a layer instead of just a recorded history state.  This way, for example, I could individually adjust each change with the opacity slider and compare the image with and without some of the changes by clicking the eye icon next to each layer.  I know new layers can be created manually but I'm looking for some way to automate it.
    Thanks for the help.

    You seem to have no firm grasp yet on the concept of non-destructive image editing using Photoshop’s existing options, specifically Adjustment Layers, Smart Objects/Smart Filters and Layer Masks.
    The Layers structure is a much more valuable tool than the History in my opinion.
    Instead of applying an Adjustment or Filter destructively you might want to try applying it as an Adjustment Layer or a Smart Filter (either with its own Mask or on a copy of the Smart Object with a Layer Mask, because all Smart Filters applied to one instance of a Smart Object must share one Mask).
    Those Layers can subsequently be changed with regard to Opacity, Blend Mode etc. or the Adjustment and Filter settings themselves.

  • Layer mask suddenly not working, how to fix this?

    Please help!
    I have been using the layer mask before and it has worked fine until now. Suddenly it only paints black and white colors, not revealing or hiding as it should. I have the mask layer selected properly. I have reset the brush tool and all the tools. I have the brush mode set to normal.
    I tried also the eraser, it paints black too.
    I'm using Photoshop CC.

    If you hold the Alt|option key when you click on the Layer Mask icon in the layers palette to target the layer mask Photoshop will display the layer mask in the images window not the composite image.  Layer Mask are gray scale channels. All you can see is the mask Black, White and Gray. Could you have Displayed the layer mask by accident. Are you sure you have the layer mask targeted to show the composite image  or could you have targeted its to show the Layer Mask instead of the composite image.

  • Paint brush not working on layer mask

    This is a totally novice question, but...
    When working with a layer mask, my paintbrush isn't showing up on the image. I can see the brush strokes on the layer mark in the layers sidebar, but no brush strokes on the image itself.
    I know it's just me doing something wrong...can anyone tell me what it is?

    I think you are not understanding how layers and layer masks work.
    Look at the following illustration.  The layers panel shows that the left of the image (The right is simply to make room for the layers panel and should be ignored) has solid blocks of red, green and blue.  The layer mask in the top layer (red) has a black rectangle which conceals that area of the layer, revealing the underlying layer.
    The mnomic we use is 'Black conceals and White Reveals'  So where the layer mask is white, the corresponding area in the layer can be seen, and where black, it is like a window looking through to the layers below.
    The Green layer also has a (smaller) black rectangle, so we can see the blue layer below that.
    The blue layer has an even smaller rectangle so we can see the checker board background which indicates transparency.
    Understanding Layer Masks In Photoshop

  • Pasting onto layer with a 'layer mask'

    I've set up some images with layer masks, but i'm problems pasting items on to the layers that are masked. When ever I paste, photoshop (cs3) creates a new layer. Surely there is a way to paste onto the selected layer, and not to create a new layer?
    any tips?
    thanks

    I'm not sure why you would want to do that. Two options. 1) Either paste to second layer and create clipping mask (ctr-alt-g??, layer...create clipping mask) if you want the transparency of the original layer to dictate the transparency of the second layer. Or, 2) just duplicate the mask from layer one onto the newly create layer by holding alt and dragging the mask to the new layer. Option 2 is what I think you want...
