Viewing images in Finder

I am a new to Macs after years on PCs. My question concerns viewing images in the Finder. In Windows XP you can open a folder of images and the number of thumbnails in the column automatically adjusts to fit the width of the window. Now you can scroll up and down to view what is in the folder.
On my Mac, when I open a folder of images in the finder I have to scroll side to side as well as up and down to see the thumbnails. Is there anyway to set the view so it adjusts itself automatically? I know I can use the slider to adjust the size of the icons to fit, but this seems like another needless step to take.

There is a lot online, if you can find it or use Apple Support site map - Mac 101, Switch etc but I am old school and like to have reference books for any OS
Apple - Support - Snow Leopard
Friends have found Pogue's Missing Manual books to fill the gap and really help, and cut down on phone and email requests for help for me.

I think you have to give us more information like which system version you have, why you think you don't have the quick look, what you have tried to resolve the problem.

  • Viewing photos/images in Finder

    Hi,
I've been transferring photos onto an external hard drive which is going fine.
Suddenly though, in Finder it's no longer previewing the photos when you scroll through without opening the file, just an icon with 'jpeg' as shown below.
How do I change it back?
There are a lot of duplications on the external that I want to clean up and without being able to simply scroll through and see the photo it's going to take forever to sort out.
    All help appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.
    Jacs

Let thje system run for a while so it can index those files and build a thumbnail database of them. You then may be able to view them in finder.
But I must say that if all the image files are numbered like in your screen shot it will be simple to find dups of those files, the numbers are the same.

  • Viewing image dimensions in Finder

This may be an obvious question, but how can I view the pixel dimensions of images in Finder? I am new to the mac platform and I know in windows you can simply hover over the thumbnail in Explorer and it would tell you the dimensions of the image.
The only way that I have found the pixel dimensions in OSX is to open the pictures in preview and then "Get Info"

    In List View, no. Sorry!
In Column View, open up the View Options and check "Show Preview Column". Click on an image, and in the Preview column, under the preview, there should be a list of information. The item marked Dimensions has what you are looking for.
There's also a way that works for all three views that involves the Get Info pane *in Finder* rather than in Preview. Click on an item, and hit Command+I. Open up the "More Info" section of the Info window (at the far left of the screen), and the Dimensions appear.

  • HT6065 Error in Finder when viewing images using Cower Flow

When viewing images in the Finder, mode Cower Flow, first click on the image gives you a blank image, the second press on the same image starts showing pictures.
The first time was installed OS 10.9 - was more interesting mode CowerFlow push the image such as room opens 200.jpg 199.jpg image

    Same problems with Coverflow.
When using left and right keys it will open wrong pictures. Not the one which is shown.
    Still in 10.9.1!!!!

  • When using private browsing to view image results in Safari 5.1.3, only the first two rows of results are visible, the following four or so rows display greyed out place holders, and the safe search button is inoperable. Suggestions?

When using private browsing to view image results in Safari 5.1.3, only the first two rows of results are visible, the following four or so rows display greyed out place holders, the remainder of the results page is blank, and the safe search button is inoperable. When I turn off private browsing and refresh the page, everything works again.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have got the same behaviour after the last Safari Update to 5.1.3. It seems that Safari now handles some scripts in a new way. If you debug the Google Website, you will see, that there is some Javascript Error, that seems to prevent to write into local cache. After some searching I wasn't able to finde a solution for this problem, other then disabling Javascript while private browsing to prevent the script loading. You then are able to use Google with the old layout. The option to disable JavaScript can be found in the Menu "Developer", wich has to be enabled in Safari in the options first.
In my opinion this is a bug that is now occuring, because Apple changed something in private browsing and that has to be fixed by Google now, to run again. Or we will have to wait for 5.1.4, as you can read online Apple will change and bugfix the javascript engine in that version, perhaps this fixes the problem as well. I hope so!
If anyone is in the developer program perhaps you could test this with the beta of 5.1.4 and tell us if it works.

  • How to view images from Pictures Folder using iPhoto?

Right now when I click an image in the Pictures folder, the image is automatically opened using Preview. I want to view images directly from my Pictures folder, and have them open to iPhoto. Is that possible?
I just want to be able to view/sort my photos by Folders rather than by Events, Titles or Photo dates. I can't seem to get them to sort by folders in iPhoto.

Iphoto is a Photo Database designed to allow you to organise and manipulate you photos without recourse to your files.
It's not an image viewer, it can only work with photos that have been imported to the database.
I just want to be able to view/sort my photos by Folders rather than by Events,
An Event is a folder of images with a fancy icon. You can organize your pics in iPhoto anyway you want, using Albums, folders, keywords and so on. It's far more flexible that using folders in the Finder.
You can opt to organise the files yourself, rather than have iPhoto do it for you, but I don't recommend it.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    Regards
    TD

  • Viewing images in LR & elsewhere

i import, organize, edit and view all  my images in LR 2.7.  the only time i export an edited image is to email or upload to an online gallery.
i'm running windows xp.  i back up all my files - photos, lrcat and documents to an ext drive. so far i'm happy with this arrangement.  a canon software, zoombrowser, shows a little more shooting info and sometimes i view images there.
speaking to a friend who does not use LR, she insisted that she wanted to be able to view all of her images (edited and original) anywhere on her computer. she uses photoshop.  that discussion has left me a little confused.
    any thoughts??
    harvey

You would want to use Bridge if you also use your images in other graphical applications such as InDesign, Illustrator or web tools such as Dreamweaver. Bridge is a tool for working with all graphical formats across many different applications. LR is for photographers. If you (like me) are primarily a photographer who does occasional bits of design, your main tool will be LR, but being able to use Bridge when required is invaluable and if you save metadata as either xmp or to the files themselves Bridge will read it and show the files as they would appear in LR. Other browsers, such as finder in OSX or explorer in Windows will either show embed jpg previews or if the codec has been installed, their own interpretation of a RAW file, they will not show what you see in LR or Bridge. Basically I haven't used finder or explorer for anything much for many years, always using either Bridge if I want to see all my files or LR if it is just the photographs. Also helps when using both OS's on a regular basis as Bridge and LR are the same irrespective of what computer I am on.
One day, Adobe will make Bridge into a database application for monitoring all the files on your system and we won't need LR any more...until then.....

  • Viewing Images Side by Side in Elements 11

How do I view images side by side in Elements 11 Organiser.  In Elements 9 it was easy but I can't find it in Elements 11 or am I being stupid?

By side by side I mean just one image next to another image.
In media view I can view as many or as few images as I chose by the zoom slider except for just 2 images which I wish to compare for finer detail.

  • "view image" menu option not working with jpg correctly

When I right click on an image in my browser, I can select "view image" and the image by itself will pop up in a new tab. This still works for most image formats, but has stopped working with the jpg format.
Say I go to google's home page, right click on their logo, and select view image. Since their logo is not in jpg format, the logo image will appear in a new tab, and the URL will show the location of that image (in this case, http://www.google.com/images/logos/ps_logo2a_cp.png)
When I try to do this with an image in jpg format, it asks me what I want to do, and gives me the options:
    1 - Save file
2 - Open with windows photo viewer
    3 - Open with (other)
In trying to make it work right, I selected "open with other" and selected firefox. This almost works how it used to work, it opens up the image in a new tab... but now, instead of showing the URL of the source image, it shows the location of the file on my computer. So for example, if I go to tinypic.com and find the jpg image (http://i56.tinypic.com/nd9d75.jpg). If I right click on that image and select "view image", it opens by itself in a new tab as it should, except the address bar displays (file:///C:/Users/Joe/AppData/Local/Temp/nd9d75-3.jpg) instead of it's web URL.
Does anyone know why this is happening? And/or how I can get firefox's behavior to go back to how it used to work for jpg's in this capacity, like it does for other image formats?

  • Drag & drop images from Finder into new Photoshop layer?

Is it possible to drag & drop images from Finder into a new Photoshop layer?
I can do it from a web browser, but not the Finder.

    >I couldn't find a way to do so in Bridge, but also I never use that program. Never got into Bridge's workflow. >
I really do suggest that you re-visit Bridge especially the CS4 version.
I just cannot conceive of trying to use a Digital camera, a Scanner or the Creative Suite programs without using Bridge and ACR.
I can even use it to read PDFs and inDesign documents (all pages!) without opening Acrobat or InD..
    >I usually keep a "work" window open with all the files I am using for a project, so it would be far more handy to be able to skim them in the Finder.
It is now far more effective and efficient to do that in Bridge than in the Finder.
This is where you would find the new Collections feature to be invaluable:
Just select all the images and other files connected to a project from any folder and drag their icons into the same Collection.
You then have all aliases (previewable at full-screen slide-view size with one click of the space bar in CS4) to ALL of your files which are now visible in. and openable from, a single panel.

  • Not able to view images in gallery, when they are ...

    Hi,
The file explorer was showing two default images folder and I was unable to delete one of them as I was unable to view images via gallery. Then i installed X-plore and deleted one of the images folder. Now, when I click images and select memory card as storage space, I cannot view them via gallery and view them only via X-plore. Please suggest how can I correct this issue.

Maybe I am stupid but if you delete the imagefolder, it will be gone. You can set your default imagefolder: goto Media-> Camera-> Settings-> Use Memory-> Card. You can also backup your card to PC, reformat the card in your phone, because it makes default maps for images, video, audio,.........and then copy your images back to the specific folder.
