Viewing iWeb site in different browsers

I have created a site using iWeb (v. 2.0.3) and am ready to publish. When I preview the index page in Firefox (my default browser) and in Safari, the site looks great and the navigation bar at the top of the welcome page is operable so I can see how each page looks in each of those browsers.
When I open the index page in Internet Explorer (using my Macs or a Windows PC) two things happen:
1. the site is not centered on the page (but pushed to the left)
2. there is no navigation bar available on the welcome page, only a black dot/period where the navigation bar should be.
Any ideas for ways to make the site look like it should in IE?
I can't publish until I can be sure the site loads as it should in the primary browsers.
Thanks.

Here's some pointers on getting your site to load in IE.
Use web safe fonts.
Don't convert text to graphics.
Optimize all your images.
Don't use drop shadows, reflections etc. ( You can add these in iWeb, take a snapshot, crop it and load the resulting JPEG to replace the original.}
Keep your page file sizes down to a minimum.
Run your files through an optimizing application before uploading.
Don't use the standard iWeb navigation.

  • Viewing iWeb pages in other browsers/platforms

    Any known issues with viewing iWeb pages in other browsers like IE (older versions especially) or on a PC platform? I'm ready to build a big but simple family site, but my first test page (jnmobecker.home.comcast.net) is not playing nice. I see it fine on Safari on my Mac, other Macs (at work for instance) see it fine, one friend on a PC sees it fine, others on PCs do not. Specifically, all they can see is the top banner image of the three kids. I did try it on a PC at work today on IE, and I watched as the progress bar loaded 20+ images (the thumbnails and slideshow components I presume) but then nothing but that top bar. Thoughts and any sugggestions are much appreciated, thanks.

    There are still problems with Firefox and IE: in particular, the font changes. In Safari it looks as it should, but others it reverts to some courier or verdana font.

  • Cannot modify iWeb site on different computer

    Followed instructions on how to modify iWeb site on a different computer (went into the library->application support->iWeb and copied the "domain" file to the different computer. Opened iWeb = generic site instead of site we created. Double-clicked filename in list = box popped up asking me if I wanted to create a new domain or open an existing one, although it would not let me select the newly copied file from the list (grayed out).
    Any solutions?

    I haven't a second computer, but I have multiple users on my computer. They are all me, but my mac doesn't know that.
    I copied a domain file to another user account.
    As the other user, i double-clicked it to open the file, I could publish (to a folder) but I couldn't save the changes.
    It simply is a matter of permissions.
    Select the domain file in the Finder and type Cmd-I(nfo). In the info panel change the owner of the file.
    But that is not enough.
    The content of the file still has the previous owner's permission set.
    Control-Click/Right-click the domain file and choose 'Show package content'.
    Display the opended folder in list view and expand all folders. Do that by typing Cmd-A (Select all) and then press Cmd-rightarrow key to expnad the folders.
    Do select all again and repeat expand, until the file count stays the same.
    Do select all again and type Cmd-Alt-I(nfo) (Alt is also known as Option).
    Change the owner to the current user and select read/write from the menu.
    The domain file is now yours.

  • Viewing iWeb site in OS9 browser - anyone done it successfully?

    Hi folks - I made an iWeb site yesterday and although it looks great on my OS X system under Firefox and Safari, my husband running OS 9.2.1 on a G4/733 cannot view the site successfully at all.
    In IE 5.0 it loaded up OK but the menu links at the top of the home page didn't work, in Netscape (7, I think) the layout is all over the place, iCab 3 loads the layout OK, the menu links work, but it only briefly flashes the placed images up and then they vanish again. Has anyone managed to view an iWeb site OK using an OS9 browser? Any ideas what the problem is?
    Thanks a lot!

    Thanks for your message Antonio. I did upgrade the version of IE to 5.1.7 but unfortunately the problem with th rollover links still remains. I am using the 'Formal' template and it's the small rollovers generated at the top of each page that don't work under that browser in OS9. I have got around the problem by manually including a second set of hyperlinks lower down on each page, to duplicate the rollovers, but this is a bit of a pain of course. Oh well, may just have to work on my DH to upgrade to OS X!
    Thanks for your suggestion.

  • White areas in safari when viewing iweb site I created

    Ok Here is my problem!
    I have created a website on iweb 08 which includes an autostart quicktime movie as an intro. When I view the site in Safari 3.2.1 strange white areas appear in the browser window. They disappear if 1 click outside of the browser. In Firefox no areas appear! Although as typical with iweb it seems, the type seems to get moved around a bund (less so in Safari, but a little nontheless.) so what am I doing wrong? Do i need to tweak a setting in iweb. And how do i get the typeset from changing spacing, although I can live with the appearance at it is, having t exactly how it looks in iweb would be perfect?
    Go to www.nigelreblochon.com to see the problem.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks
    Olitrific

    I think it might be too good. It made me very hungry after just the first two pages. I line the simplicity of the site. That's makes it much more compatible with the dark side, i.e. Internet Explorer.
    I don't know enough about flash to help you on that but Flash probably would load faster than QT. I know Roddy McKay is knowledgeable using flash for music so he might be able to help with flash video. The Quicktime expert hereabouts is QuicktimeKirk. Do a search of this forum for posts by either of those users and "flash" and you should get some useful information.

  • What's the best way to view my site in other browsers?

    I want to set up a work station at home - I have a new laptop, an old broken laptop, and an old (working) desktop PC.
    I'd like to put all the browsers on the desktop PC, and use the broken laptop - if possible - as an external display for it. But my real question is - how do I install multiple versions of one browser on a single computer (IE 4.0, 5.0, 6.0) and is it possible to see how it would run on MAC while using a PC? Is that a dumb question?
    I thought I heard something about Linux having a program that can check different browsers - anyone know anything about this? Anyone suggest replacing XP on the desktop with linux?

    CROSS BROWSER TESTING
    It's a good idea to install 4 major browsers on your good working PC;
    Firefox, IE7 or 8, Opera, Safari for Win or Google Chrome.

    Hi
    background-position-x: 5px; is a css3 proposal and is not supported in most browsers, (and is also wrongly formed for most of those that do).
    To position a background see - http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_background.asp. What you are looking for is about half way down the page.

  • Trouble Viewing iWeb site on dot Mac account

    I have a home office and I also have a studio. When I am at home working, I have no trouble viewing photo pages on my dot mac account from either Safari or Firefox.
    When I am at my studio, however, I cannot browse my photo pages on Safari nor with Firefox.
    Safari gives me the "server stopped responding" error and Firefox displays "the server timed out".
    So, what's up with this?
    At the home office, I use wireless DSL access with a MacBook. At my studio, I'm using an iMac wirelessly on my network. The the service provided is through Comcast broadband cable modem.
    On both machines, I have iLife & iWork 08. I do not sync my dot mac account with the 2 machines. The original files for the photo pages reside on my studio iMac.
    So why can I browse my way through my photo pages when I'm surfing the web from my home office, but am unable to see them when I'm working at my studio?
    Thanks for assisting me if you can.

    I will when I go back to my studio. I'm just trying to understand where you are going with this. I have contractors who work in and out of my studio with their laptops. They use XP & Vista and they have absolutely NO problem what so ever accessing my photo pages. In fact, when I couldn't access from my iMac, I had one of them check to see if the site was down. They could see my pages just fine with no problem. So...if they can reach them using the same network while sitting at the desk next to mine...why can't my iMac reach the pages?
    Thanks.

  • Some websites have jumbled letters. I tried opening the same sites in different browsers. But, they work, except for FF. How do I fix this?

    Annoying jumbled letters.

    Can you post a link to websites where you see it happen?
    This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.<br />
    Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.<br />
    You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
    Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.

  • What are the browser recommendations for best viewing iWeb 08 site on a PC?

    What are the browser recommendations for best viewing iWeb sites on a PC? Can't find any info on Apple iWeb site.

    Hi,
    I don't think there are recommendations from Apple.
    What I can say is that the newest version of InternetExplorer at the UniversityCampus is working great with my website I didn't find any problem (Menus, Slideshows, text displaying, pictures everything worked great). There are IE problems reported in other threads but I think they refer to older IE versions (seems like most IE users still have older versions on their PCs).
    Newest Firefox will work too.

  • Circles vs. squares in different browsers... Help!

    Hello,
    My website-building skills are very basic, but I just finished revising my website:  http://www.sharibeaubien.com.
    When I check the site in different browsers, I notice a discrepancy.  I have a row of dots or circles underneath the main navigation near the top of the page.  In Firefox and Internet Explorer, it appears as I intend it.  However, Safari and Opera browsers display this row as a line of squares.
    Is there any way to fix this so that the dots appear correctly in all browsers?
    Thank you so much for any help you can provide.
    Shari

    Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me.
    If I decide to include the image in the style rule, how would I do that?
    My guess is this:
    1. Create the image in Photoshop
    2. Save it as a jpeg within my site's folder
    3. Add the property "background-image"
    4. Search/browse for the image and insert it there
    Is that correct?
    I know the table-based layout is archaic, but it's what I'm familiar with and I didn't have the time to learn the newer format right now.    Within the table, would I need to create a second row to house the image or could I just include it within the current row and the navigation?
    Thank you so much.  I can't express how much I really, really appreciate your help.

    Unable to view external webcam content.  I'm using IE11 with Windows 7 64 bit.  I've tried deactivating Activex control, tried different browsers etc, tweeked the tools for trusted sites etc, but am totally stuck. I know the cams are working as i can view them on mobile phone via puffin browser.  I can play Youtube videos etc just fine. So why not the webcam?

    First, confirm that ActiveX Filtering is configured to allow Flash content:
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/867968
    Internet Explorer 11 introduces a number of changes both to how the browser identifies itself to remote web servers, and to how it processes JavaScript intended to target behaviors specific to Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, this means that content on some sites will be broken until the content provider changes their site to conform to the new development approach required by modern versions of IE.
    You can try to work around these issues by using Compatibility View:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11
    If that is too inconvenient, using Google Chrome may be a preferable alternative.

  • Problems with site displaying in different browsers

    Hi,
    I have made this site in dreamweaver CS3 using one of the default templates when you make a new documents. On Safari and Firefox (and I think on recent IE browsers as well) it looks fine, however on IE6 and IE7 it messes up completely, and the content in the middle frame is pushed right down to the bottom of the page. You can view the site here: http://www.flat29.com/ (and check the source code there too)
    I have tried a number of different things to fix the problem, but I have no idea what is causing the issue, so its difficult to troubleshoot! Any help with this would be massively appriciated!
    Thanks
    Dan

    Unfortunately you have paid the penalty for using one of the templates which ships with Dreamweaver. They are amongst the most awfully constructed pieces of shite I have ever come across. They are not written for the novice to understand but by some twatt that has their head up their arse.
    Now I'm going to give you a few simple steps (which Adobe should have f_cking done before they released these pieces of crap) which will provide a stable approach.
    Step 1) Move your 'mainContent' <div> to directly after the end of your sidebar1 </div>. You can do this by selecting the 'mainContent' <div> tag at the bottom of Dreamweaver design view then switching to code view where you will see all of its code selected. Cut the code.
    Step 2) Go back into Dreamweaver design view and next select the 'sidebar1' <div> tag along the bottom of the window. Now switch back to code view and scroll down the page until you come to the end of the highlighted section of code i.e. (the end of the sidebar1 <div>)
    Step 3) Place your mouse cursor right after the closing </div> tag of the 'sidebar1' <div> and paste back in the 'mainContent' <div>.
    Step 4) Amend the css in your css style sheet for the 'mainContent' css selector to as below:
    .thrColFixHdr #mainContent {
    float: left;
    margin-left: 14px;
    display: inline;
      background-color: #000000;
    width: 404px;
    Thats it!
    Don't worry about IE6 no-one much uses that anymore.
