Viewing Kindle files in Amazon Kindle Previewer produced by Kindle Plugin for ID

I'm trying to help my girlfriend get a simple, short (12 pages) children's book published on Amazon as a Kindle ebook for sale, and I have it laid out in book format (all pages in one file) in ID CS5.5. I downloaded the Amazon Kindle Plugin for Adobe InDesign, as well as the Amazon Kindle Previewer. After finally figuring out how to format the book using the plugin and seeing it the way we want in the Kindle Previewer, I'm noticing that the page numbering in the previewer says it's 77 pages, even though the actual book is only 12. I also read that the Amazon Kindle Previewer is meant to be used in conjunction with KindleGen, a command line tool that is the only tool officially supported by Amazon to convert files to Kindle format.  If that's the case, what purpose does the Kindle Plugin for InDesign serve? The documentation I have for the plugin is "Amazon Kindle Publishing Guidelines for Kindle Plugin for Adobe InDesign... How to create books for the Kindle platform from Adobe InDesign". So I'm a bit confused here.
I guess my question is, once the ID file is converted to MOBI, how is it previewed to test for formatting on the various Kindle platforms?
Or am I headed in the wrong direction trying to use ID for laying out an ebook for Kindle format? I'm totally new to this and would appreciate some input from those who have experience creating Kindle ebooks for Amazon.
Denny

Children's books should usually use the fixed layout Kindle format. The InDesign Plugin doesn't do that. The book needs to be hand coded in html and css. It's discussed in Chapter 4 in the Amazon Kindle Publishing Guidelines and on this page: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000729511. You might be able to use the Amazon sample -- there is a link that lets you download the actual files on the page I just linked to -- and modify them to suit your book.
For regular books, I never use the InDesign plugin as I want more control over my ebook formatting. I use the epub output and then convert from epub to mobi using KindleGen. It's actually just as easy and it gives you the opportunity to tweak the html after you output which I like.

  • Kindle Plugin for InDesign/Ebook

Hi. I want to publish my ebooks on Amazon, by jusing the latest version of InDesign - CS5.5 on my iMac. BUT I'm having trouble installing Amazons kindle-plugin, which should make you able to export your InDesign file directly into kindle-format. Whenever I try to install it, in the end, a pop-up says "Installation failed"! What have I done wrong?
Please comment if you have any suggestions!
    Kind Regards

I haven’t really read overwhelmingly great things about the kindle plugin.
Try exporting to EPUB and then converting to MOBI using Calibre.

Our site is lsracers.com, as soon as you open the site,an audio file is supposed to play, (lower left hand corner an icon is displayed)
It says, a plugin is needed to play this content, this is on a win 7 Ltop. If I use an XP pc, it gave me the option of activating the plugin,
Windows Media Player plugin dll3.0.2.629 and it plays the 2:40 second file. Why can't I get the plugin to work with FF in win7?

  • Is there a 2GB file size limit on saving a custom format plugin for a custom file type?

I have resolved issues on reading files > 2GB. Now when I save files >2GB, I get a popup that states there is a 2GB limit for plugins.
I an using photoshop CS6 on a MAC OSX 10.9 with 16 GB RAM.
The custom file type is what should be selected when the Save As Dialogue is visible.
I looked for a setting in the Photoshop preferences for Files & setting to PSB, but did not see one.
I tried modifying values in the PiPL for formatmaxSize and PluginMaxSize, but the only values that the code will compile in with:
    32767 & 2147483647.
I saw a posting in previous years that custom plugins were limited to 2 GB.

I would like to rephrase my question, now that I have worked a little more with my code.
Is there a 2GB limit per channel and 4GB limit for total file size for a custom photoshop format plugin?

  • InDesign and Kindle creations for authors

I can no longer make Kindles on InDesign. I'm not good at HTML and struggle over it. Thus, I've depended upon InDesign to create e-books for me. I suspect that there are many other authors in my position, and the Kindlepreviewer cannot read epubs, nor can they be downloaded into a Kindleviewer.
Now that Adobe has developed newer versions of their software, its InDesign versions are no longer compatible to Amazon's plugin that creates Kindles. Although Adobe says that they will download InDesign CS6, providing that we give them its serial number, I can't find my Creative Suite disks, because I was living overseas for several years and had them in storage. Further, the person who had installed the Creative Suite for me (he did this during my visit to the US), he failed to register the software with Adobe, so Adobe has no records of my owning it.
MY MAIN PROBLEM IS: I can no longer convert my manuscripts into Kindles, because of the changes in InDesign. I've written to Adobe about this, and I was told that unfortunately, Amazon has not updated their Kindle plugin for the newer InDesign models.
I DON'T THINK THAT AMAZON SHOULD UPDATE THEIR KINDLE PLUGIN TO FIT THE NEWER INDESIGN MODELS. Rather, since ADOBE is constantly changing their software, they should instead still make their InDesign versions to be compatible with Amazon's plugin, because Amazon already went overboard to fit Adobe's needs, but Amazon has no inkling about what new ideas Adobe is thinking up next. Amazon's specialty is selling books and other goods--NOT creating new software, as Adobe is constantly doing.

This is my personal opinion. I'm not Adobe staff and I have no way of knowing what Adobe may or may not do in the future.
Adobe has made it clear that they will not be making any changes to InDesign CS6. Changes will only be made in InDesign CC.
Adobe has also made it clear that their focus is on the EPUB format, which is an open standard. It's not building plug-ins for Amazon's proprietary format. It's up to Amazon to create a plug-in update to the current version of InDesign.
Currently the best route to Kindle format is to create a good EPUB, then use Kindle Previewer to translate into Kindle format. • Which is better, Kindle Plugin or Calibre?

I am wanting to create a kindle friendly file of the book I am working on. I know that Amazon released a Kindle Plugin for ID but I have read that there are various issues that it has because it is free and a beta version. Anyway, for those of you who have converted epub to mobi (using Calibre) and the Kindle Plugin. Which is better?
    Thanks!

    Gpcn,
I'm going to highly recommend the new Airport Extreme. I've been having all sorts of wifi and networking issues because of the saturated 2.4 GHz spectrum in my surrounding neighborhood.
I finally bit the bullet on friday night and purchased the Airport Extreme. I could not be happier!
I used to top out at around 8 Mbit/s download and 1 Mbit/s upload with my older Linksys setup. Now i'm getting 40+ Mbit/s and 2 Mbit/s respectively.
Not only that, but i'm no longer dropping my wifi with my devices (latops, iPads, iPhone, etc). It's very consistent and the speeds are amazing!
Sure it may be pricier than others, but it's worth every penny. The setup is very easy and you get Three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for connecting computers or network devices as well as built-in NAT support for security. You are better off getting the Airport Extreme.

  • Kindle plugin crashes and bugs

    Hello,
I've been using Indesign since 2001 for publishing Bibles (large Books of 700+ pages).
Recently, I started using the Kindle plugin for CS4. The first Kindle Book was successful, but I have some bugs to report.
Just about every time I start the export to Kindle process, the export crashes and I get a popup saying "Object invalid" or "not an Object". I restart the export, and it runs. Go figure.
Sometimes, the export will halt part way through the process, and popup the same message(s) about an invalid object.
If this doesn't happen, the resulting .mobi file is good and usable. Although I have found that any indented text (such as a Table of Contents [just text not hyperlinked or anything]) with 3 levels of indentation will not line up correctly in the outputted file; and anything I do to correct it doesn't seem to work; and the result will look different in different Kindle devices, according to the Kindle emulator tool.
If these problems are ignored and an output .mobi file can be generated, the Kindle file is pretty good. It is much better quality than a comparable .mobi file generated starting with Word documents, then using the Amazon emulator tool to convert it to .mobi. So kudos to Adobe guys, your product is performing better than the alternative, but there are still warts.
The 2nd problem I am having currently, is that I have another Bible version that I have prepared for exporting to Kindle format, using identical everything  to the previous Bible version. There are 40 individual documents tied together by a "Book", relatively small sizes. Every time I have tried to export this Book to Kindle, it crashes, and I have no idea why. I tried "save as" for every document, so each one would be a clean file.
I just did another export, and I got the following error popup that you can see here. Please help if you can. Thanks

I think I figured out what was wrong.
I was using a Book with 40 different documents tied together into a single Book.
I created a new document and "repoured" the content from the single documents into the new single document with a lot more pages. After adding several of the single doc contents, I did a test run to see if the old bugs would should up, and not a single one did.
I still need to repour all of the content into the new single document and retest, but I've got a feeling that this was the problem. It appears that the Kindle plugin works fine with single docs, but not with Books and a bunch or even a few single docs tied together. That creates crashes, and it always results in that error that you see in the photo above.
That should help you all to run down the source of the problem.
I liked the Book w/ single docs, because I needed to create a TOC with each single doc. If they're all together when creating the TOC, unless you do a lot of extra work making special styles for each TOC, it all globs together and that's not what was desired.
So anyway, I hope this helps. I'll post again, once I get it all combined tomorrow and rerun the export, and let you know the results.

  • ID CS6 Kindle Plugin Export Error

    I'm using InDesign 6 v 8.0.1 on a Mac Pro running OS X 10.7.5 Lion.
After giving up on the Kindle Plugin for InDesign last year -- I couldn't install it, like others -- I finally managed to get the plugin to install today.
I fired up one of my simplest current projects: a single document, no images, no links, two paragraph styles. Then I happily went up to the File menu, selected Export for Kindle..., was shown a Save dialog, hit Save....
And got the following error message: Bad argument list
Once I hit the OK button, another error message popped up:
An attached script generated the following error:
object does not support the property or method 'merged'
I gather that there's a runtime error in the export script somewhere -- but the script doesn't show up in my script folders, so even if I knew what I was doing (which I wouldn't) I can't find the plugin script.
What gives? I know it's an Amazon plugin (I'm posting on the KDP forums as well), but has anyone else here run into this problem?

I'm afraid I'd only be guessing at this point. I don't do epub at all. I do know, however, that CS5.5 tends to work better than CS5, and CS6 better still.
One thing would be to make sure your CS5 is fully patched to the 7.0.4 update.

  • InDesign's Kindle Plugin Problem

With the recent release of InDesign's Kindle plugin to export files to the e-reader it looked like life just got easier. It was false hope.
The problem I'm having with the plugin is that first line indentions are lost on export. Also, space before/after is also lost.
Is anyone else having a similar problem with the Kindle plugin? Have you found a solution?
    Your help is appreciated.

Jongware, the link for the page you provided doesn't open completely. (On third attempt the page did open--bookmarked your site.) Here's the plugin that I'm referring to:
    Kindle Plugin for InDesign CS4/5
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000234621
Since posting I've found the issue appears to only involve exporting from InDesign's Book. When exporting an InDesign file by itself the formatting works, but if the same file is exported from an InDesign book the formatting is lost.
Obviously, a TOC is impossible without using InDesign's book file.
Are there any known quirks with InDesign's book file that could be related to this issue? Anyone?

It does!  Why not try it after you add your text?

  • AdobeAcrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF Files in Web Browser...what do I need to do to fix this..

I just got Windows 7 and have been having problems since loading it. Most of my drivers only go to Vista and don't recognize 7.
I have trying to download some manuals from their website
and keep getting this message; Adobe Acrobat/reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in Web Browser.

Could I suggest a workaround for PDFs until a solution is posted? Open them directly in the Adobe application rather than in a browser tab.
In your Adobe application(s), go to:
    Edit > Preferences > Internet
Then uncheck "Display PDF in browser"
(There are very few sites where having PDF integrated is really beneficial.)

I am having some huge problems with my colorspace settings. Every time I upload my raw files from my Canon 5D mark II or 6D the pics are perfect in color. That includes the back of my camera, the pic viewer on my macbook pro, and previews. They even look normal when I first open them in photoshop. I will edit, save, and then realize once i've sent it to myself to test the color is WAY off. This only happens in photoshop. I've read some forums and have tried different things, but it seems to be making it worse. PLEASE HELP! Even viewing the saved image on the mac's pic viewer is way off once i've edited in photoshop. I am having to adjust all my colors by emailing myself to test. Its just getting ridiculous.

Check the color space in camera raw, the options are in the link at the bottom of the dialog box. Then when saving make sure you save it to the srgb color space when sending to others. Not all programs understand color space and or will default to srgb. That won't necessarily mean it will be accurate, but it will put it in the ballpark. Using save for web will use the srgb color space.
