Viewing Leopard Clients Via ARD - Desktop Picture is locked?

Anyone notice the Leopard desktop background via ARD is always that default purple space picture, even those the real desktop pic may be something different?
I also noticed that you cant change the desktop pic of a remote Mac via ARD. It uses the file located in /System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg
What's really bad about this is the simple fact that the "space" image looks horrible via ARD and slows down the sessions too.
Try it yourself: go to a Mac and change the desktop pic manually from the console (sitting at the Mac). Then go to another Mac with ARD Admin installed and view the original Mac (client) via ARD. Weird huh?

maybe its because my g4 isn't actually connected to a monitor that a desktop picture isn't shown...its basically a headless mac just used for storage and sometimes as a node in Logic but it is totally controlled by ARD. Under tiger it was ok so maybe its just a leopard thing

True IP address for ARD remote client via IPObserver [newbie]

I have had success managing LAN clients via ARD, but now my situation is different.
I want to still be able to provide ARD support via a network address specific to a workstation from outside the LAN, and the IP address I have tried does not connect. I am deriving the address from the IP Observer utility that I had my client launch on their system. [it is not the obvious 192.168.1.xxx address from DHCP]. I have confirmed that the Sharing attributes are correct on the client system, although it might be a 2.2 version [running 3.1 admin]. Based on a test, I believe the IP Observer address is the internet IP location of the router [not the actual router LAN IP], not the client.
The IP address indicates that it is in the correct domain [Roadrunner, NYC], but the client-specific address is inaccurate. Is it because the client is setup through a DHCP router and switch? will they need a static IP? Can they somehow reveal their station-specific IP via an iChat connection log? should I try to address the client though a different port?
I am new to this extension of ARD, so bear with the obviousness of the query to some of you.

Enable AFP File Sharing via ARD through command line?

Anyone know how to enable AFP file sharing on a remote Leopard client using ARD? I had been sending Unix Commands to do most of my changes, but cannot figure out how to enable AFP file sharing through a unix command. I've tried running /usr/sbin/AppleFileServer but that doesn't seem to do the trick. Any ideas?

Am I able to view all the connected clients on my AEBS at any time?

You can view connected clients via the AirPort Utility. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Advanced > Logging & Statistics > Logs and Statistics > Wireless Clients or DHCP Clients tabs)

Leopard client controls view of tiger server share point

Hi, recently purchased a Mac Mini running Leopard all patched. Connected via afp to a Xserve RAID, Xserve running a sharepoint using ACL's. In list view the leopard client controls the list view on the Xserve, meaning that all the other Tiger clients see the leopard clients folder structure when they connect to the sharepoint. I have not changed any settings on the Xserve, just re-propogated the permissions and ACL's.
Any ideas would be great,

Managed clients sometimes freeze at logout showing only desktop picture

Hello --
We're running Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 on an Xserve and Mac OS X 10.4.1 on forty PowerMac G5 workstations. All users have network home folders. All managed preferences are at the computer level.
The problem is that occasionally, during the logout process, a user's computer will freeze / hang displaying only the user's desktop picture.
While the computer is in this state, it's not accessible via Apple Remote Desktop. The only way to recover from the freeze is to force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button.
This is the final entry in the system log before the freeze that may be a clue to the problem:

I've done some searching online for other clues related to "afpfs_flushfiles" and haven't had much luck. Has anyone else out there experienced this issue? Does anyone know what the "afpfs_flushfiles" task is trying and failing to do?

I have this problem as well. We have several offices, but only one of our offices does it. I have been researching for a while now, but have found very little. We also experience delays and other random errors as well. Have you checked your forward and reverse DNS? Using the Terminal, type sudo changeip -checkhostname and verify that the current hostname and DNS hostname are matching. I installed DNS after I setup my auto-mounting sharepoints, and think maybe that has something to do with my problem. I will be implementing my fixes this weekend. I would recommend more research before using changeip to repair it if your hostnames do not match, as I'm unsure what other changes this may cause. I'm fairly sure I'm going to have to re-promote my Open Directory master, then re-select the user's homes out of WM, as well as rejoin all the client computers to the new OD master because the search base will be changing as well. I may find out that DNS had nothing to do with the problem as well. Good luck, hope this info helps.

Does ARD Admin 3.6.x work with Snow Leopard Clients

Our school would like to make a volume purchase of ARD, which is only available for Mountain Lion/Lion. At present, we are using Snow Leopard on all our computers. If we upgrade the teachers' computers to Mountain LIon and give them ARD 3.6.x, will they be able to view/administer Snow Leopard clients? It would be great to hear from someone who has done this in a school setting.
If anyone involved with ARD support is listening, it would be nice to see an ARD admin versus ARD client compatibility table in the specifications for this very useful product.

The current release of the ARD adminstrator application works fine with my Snow Leopard clients which have the 3.5.3 client, though I only have a few and my use is pretty modest. You may get feedback from others who use ARD with a larger client base.

How do I install an OS via ARD? I thought I need a .pkg but the Leopard install disc doesn't. If there is a way, and I'm sure there is, this would save me hours of installs...please help? I'm running a MacPro 10.5.6 and the eMacs are 10.4.11

AFAIK it can't be done via ARD - seriously think about it? Obvious question would be: How do you maintain the VNC connection when the client(s) has booted from the Installer Disk?
The best way to do this and if you have OSX Server is to use the NetInstall Service:

Once the image has been built, restart client macs holding down the 'N' key. Depending on the speed/bandwidth of your network all 27 macs should upgrade without too much bother.

Company-wide Desktop Picture on Mavericks Clients

We're looking at rolling out Mavericks on our systems at work, and I have set up a test machine to make sure everything will work as expected. We have a Lion server that is using Workgroup Manager MCX (instead of Profile Manager, which will change) to distribute policies to all the workstations. All of them are working well except for the desktop picture.
Now, I understand that the setting for desktop picture in Mavericks is no longer in a plist, but in an sqlite database. Is there any way to set the desktop picture using the Workgroup or Profile Managers for a Mavericks client? I don't want to replace the default picture on Mavericks systems because we update the desktop picture regularly.
EDIT: I should add, I tried to write a login script to do it, but I couldn't get it to run. The script has this single line:
tell application "System Events" to set picture of every desktop to "/Volumes/Groups/Everyone/Wallpapers/Current.png"

Your script is a kludgy hack that won't prevent users from changing the Desktop for the entirety of their session .
The correct way to do this is with Managed Preferences for OSX also called 'MCX' as you have already seen.
There is a tweak that should still work on 10.9 to import all the Apple based 'managed preference keys'.
Get Workgroup Manager for the same OS as the server (you may need the server admin tools, it varies, search for both). It may need to be the 10.9 version on Mavericks.

Open WGM on a client, connect to the server (do not work in the local node!). Select the group or computer group you are managing & select the 'Preferences > Details tab'. Click the + button to add the following…
/System/Library/CoreServices/ManagedClient.app
This will give you the power to manage a lot of extra keys, find the 'Desktop picture' in the list, double click it, decide how often to manage it (once = first login, often = at each login, always = what it says ).
Select 'Often' & create a New Key, click the new item & select the key to manage (in this case Background). It should autofill the other values (e.g. image path & the path to the current Desktop. Sometimes Always won't create the key correctly, so create it inside often & drag it down.
Once all that is saved login as a member of the managed group & it should pull down the desired MCX prefs (reboot).
Your Macs will need to bound to the server for this to work & I haven't tested on 10.9 (WGM doesn't want to apply these to the local node, which may indicate it isn't possible.
I'd strongly suggest you copy the desired image to the Macs in question to increase reliability, or host it in an auto mount that appears in /Networks.

Client Desktop Picture

I have set up a Mac Network with OS X Server 10.4.7 and all clients running
OS X 10.4.7. How do I force a desktop picture when a user logs in? It is
always defaulting to Aqua Blue. I have renamed Aqua Blue on the local
machine and this change the desktop picture for the logon screen, but when
the user logs on, back comes Aqua Blue!
I have also tried the same trick at the server - in case it was getting it
from there - with no joy. How do I set the desktop without logging on as
each user. I am going to have hundreds of them!
After further playing around I have found that any user that has not logged
on before will get the new "Aqua Blue" that I have set. But if a user has
logged on to the machine at any time before the old Aqau Blue is the Desktop
picture. Even when the old Aqua Blue has been deleted from the machine!
Where does OS X keep this setting for users?

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.plist should hold the Desktop background preference. Try deleting that file in a test account to see if you get the desired effect. If you do, you can recursively delete the desktop preference file from the home directories of the users you want to fix:
-Navigate to the /Users folder (or wherever you have home directories on your server) in the Terminal.
-Execute "sudo rm -ri */Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist". You will be asked for your admin password, and then asked to confirm each deletion. You can skip the users which are working correctly, or just answer "y" to each query and get them all.

How to maintain default folder view (broken when leopard clients connect)?

we run 10.4 tiger server and have the problem that if 10.5 leopard clients connect to the share their changes to the folder view become the new default for everyone connecting after them. with 10.4 clients the default folder view is looked to the settings of the admin.
is there a way to bring back this feature with 10.5 clients connecting? lock the default folder view of shares?

It's "show view options" in English. Also obtained by typing CMD+J
Those only apply to the top-level folder. Each folder you open uses whatever you've elected to use as the defaults. Select a folder, CMD+J, set the view as you desire, click on Use as Default button. That setting will be used for all windows that you open in the future that have never been opened previously. All other windows that you opened will retain whatever view you previously selected for them.
If you want to reset everything to one view, close all open Finder windows, launch the Terminal app (/Applications/Utilities/), copy & paste this command into the window that pops up,
find ./ -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;
hit the return key, quit the Terminal app, restart, open a Finder window, CMD+J, set up the view options as desired, click the Use as Defaults button, and close the view options window. Now, every Finder window you open will have this view.

Why is my desktop picture always changing to one i view online?

Simply reset your desktop picture. It's not unusual for the plist that saves info gets corrupted and resets to the default setting.

Distribution to clients via Adobe Content Viewer

Hi, I'm new to the DPS world and I have a question regarding distribution of folios via the Adobe Content Viewer. Am I correct in thinking that I can create the folio and distribute it to a client via the Adobe Content Viewer? I have a folio that I wish to distribute to a small group of client (approx 12 iPads). Silently/remotely upgrading clients from 10.6 to 10.7 via ARD/Script

Hi!
Apple finally made it possible to upgrade from a major OS (10.6 to 10.7) via an application running on the client, rather than having to boot of a DVD on 100 individual computers.
Does anyone know of a way to kick this installation procedure off remotely?
Currently I am remoting onto the machines via ARD and manually clicking the "Install Mac OS X Lion" app, then choosing Next, Next, Next, Install
it would be nice to be able to schedule this via an ARD task so the installer runs silently without the need to click on the GUI to kick off the installation.
Any ideas?

I can add it's the same with upgrading to Lion... So I guess they changed some driver code between 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 and its not compatible with my logic board.

Client desktop pictures disappear after admin share screen

I share my screen with 15 computers in my lab. When I quit the process and clients have access again, several machines lose their custom desktop pictures. It seems to fix itself if they log out and log back in. Any ideas on what causes this?

What version of the mac os x is the client computers running?
if one of the effected users, on an effected computer sets their desktop picture, then logs out, and then logs back in, do they still keep the custom desktop picture? or dose it default back to the generic picture?
On the effected computers, dose the issue happen on all user accounts? Or just specific user accounts? If you create a new local user account, dose it have the same issue?
