Viewing Metadata On File Import

When I import files, I like to use the Image Creation Date when naming files, projects and locations.
I am using a Preset to some of this, but not all.
I would like to create the Project name as well as the Folder name using the Image Creation Date.
But I can't seem to figure out how to view the files Creation Date when I'm importing.
Is this possible?

But then I have to rename both the Project and the folder in Finder where it's getting imported to. So knowing the Creation Date up front saves the extra steps.
O.K., then try to get the filename correct on import. I am really worried by your concern with the filenames you see in the "Finder". Please read Frank Caggiano's post from your other thread carefully:
Re: A Good Reference for Aperture, Versions, File Names, Changing & Moving
You are in for big trouble, if you insist on changing filenames behind Aperture's best. You really do not need to know the filenames outside Aperture, because do are not supposed to interfere with those files, other than using the tools provided by Aperture. If you rename files and folders holding Aperture's master files from the Finder, it wan't be long until we will see your first post asking with help to relocate your master image files
I fully sympathize with your wish to have control over the file structure - deep in my heart I am still a UNIX programmer, and the Terminal window is more important to me than the Finder, but if you want to use Aperture, then you have to accept that to change the file structure of the master files outside Aperture might corrupt the integrity of the database.

  • Importing cube views metadata

    Hello,
I have a question about the data modeler "import > cube views metadata" feature:
It imports from an xml file. Is the definition of the xml schema available somewhere? My customers use a custom built repository for dimensional modeling. I'd like to generate the xml from this custom repository metadata so that I can import it into Data Modeler.
    Thank you,
    Beatriz.

    Hello Beatriz,
I cannot point to xml schema definition. Cube Views is replaced by other product in DB2 9 Data warehouse edition. There were other products claiming support for that meta data format. You can try with them or with DB2 9 DWE.

  • File importer detected an inconsistency in the file stucture of (file name). Reading and writing this file's metadata (XMP) has been disabled.

I have duplicated a project to work on another computer. The project opens fine but when I import new footage/audio files I get this message. "File importer detected an inconsistency in the file stucture of (file name). Reading and writing this file's metadata (XMP) has been disabled." Then I can't play my timeline and Premier Pro crashes.  I have to force quit and restart my computer to continue working. What does this error really mean? How do you rectify?
Our workflow requires that we duplicate projects to make updates because we are frequently revising but need to keep original project unchanged and intact.

I have a similar issue and message , but occurs when I import AVI clips from OnLocation CS4 to Premier Pro CS4.

  • Import XMP Metadata From File

In Beta4, the Import XMP Metadata From File command would import data found in an xmp file.
    In V1, it's not working...or am I missing something.
(I do understand that Export XMP to File will write the data into the image file itself.)
    Ideas?

  • Keywords, Include on Export, Save Metadata to File, and SmugMug???

My workflow and issue (LR 5.7 and SmugMug plugin 2.1.10):
    1) I import RAW files as DNGs
    2) I do various Lightroom stuff, plus add Keywords. Some of the keywords do not have "Include on Export" checked. Some of my keywords are part of hierarchies that have "Export Containing Keywords" checked. And some of keywords have synonyms.
    3) Once I am all done with a file, I select "Save Metadata to File"
    4) Then I publish to SmugMug using the SmugMug publish service.
    5) The SmugMug website shows keywords which I did not intend to be included on export, it does not show the complete hierarchy for those keywords that should, and none of my synonyms show. I noticed this is the same way the keywords were saved to the DNG when I view the file in Bridge.
    6) When I export the file to a file on my desktop and check the metadata with Bridge, the Keywords all export correctly.
All of this behavior makes sense, I guess, but I cannot figure out what to do about it. Should I not bother to "Save Metadata to File", this seems to be what is messing up the SmugMug publish service? Is the SmugMug publish service behaving correctly? I would have expected it to behave like an export which would write synonyms, exclude keywords that should be excluded, etc, which seems to work ok in point 6 above. Are the publish services more effort than they are worth? So I get SmugMug to work, what happens when I try Flickr? I hate to stop "Save(ing) Metadata to File(s)", since that seems like a nice hedge against db corruption and the next time I decide to try a whole different image database.
Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps someone with direct experience with publishing to Smugmug will chime in.  Short of that, some thoughts on your issues:
Should I not bother to "Save Metadata to File", this seems to be what is messing up the SmugMug publish service?
I very much doubt that it is messing up the publishing.  What gets saved to the file from the catalog is independent of what gets exported.  Saving metadata to the file is generally a good practice (in case you screw up your catalog backups).  Many, perhaps most, users set the preference Catalog Settings > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.
I would have expected it to behave like an export which would write synonyms, exclude keywords that should be excluded, etc, which seems to work ok in point 6 above.
    Yes, that's a reasonable expectation.
You may have done this already, but double-check: Right-click the Smugmug publishing service in the left-hand column of the Library, select Edit Settings, and in the Metadata section verify that you have Include: All Metadata set.
Did you download the Smugmug plugin from Smugmug? You might try this Smugmug plugin instead -- the author designed the publishing architecture of LR and has an excellent reputation.
Are the publish services more effort than they are worth? So I get SmugMug to work, what happens when I try Flickr?
I think many users find the publishing services are generally worthwhile.  I publish regularly to Flickr (using the built-in Flickr plugin, which isn't completely reliable) and the Zenfolio plugin from Friedl.

  • HELP!!  I viewed my "backup" files, and now ALL of my photos are no longer "linked" to Lightroom.

I thought I was missing some files, so I viewed my backup files.  I received a "warning" that Lightroom would restart and view my backup files.  I did NOT receive any warning, that there was NO GOING BACK!!  I've tried everything.  I cannot re-link ANY of my photos.  Well, I did just do one, and it told me all the other photos in the folder were corrupt and Lightroom would not be able to edit them (and no, it was not an exported .jpeg file).  Fortunately, I am not concerned about this folder, that's why I tested it.  I was forced to moved all of my photos from my C drive to my D drive because for some weird reason on this computer, my D drive is 5 times bigger and I ran out of room.  When I did that, I was able to relink all the pictures.  Sadly, it didn't keep my Folders, it just relinked them all by date.  That I can deal with, even though it makes finding photos much more difficult, but I wasn't about to try to rename any of them and have to relink again.
Now, I can't relink any of them because it appears in Lightroom that all photos are back in the C drive and therefore, the new photos that I placed on the D drive are not there, and nothing will relink, period, not even the ones that were originally on my C drive!
I have never been so aggravated in my life.  I LOVE Lightroom capabilities.  I have version 2.3.  When I look it up on the online help, all I get is how the photos are in whatever location they were saved, but they are linked, etc.  I already know that part.  I seriously wish I had NEVER looked at my backup files.  I don't think I'll bother backing up stuff anymore because apparently looking at the backup messes up everything.
I fully anticipated that I would be able to go back, choose my folders on my D drive and have all of my current photos available.  Sadly, not.
My user name should be FREAKED OUT!

Thanks!  I've been practicing deep breathing between yelling at my computer.  I use Windows 7.  I was in my "regular" Lightroom photos, and I couldn't locate some pictures I took last December.  So, I thought, well, why not look at the back up files?  I'm normally excellent at remembering exact steps, but I'm so worried about all of my thousands of photos, I can only explain what I think I did.  I went into Windows Explorer, and chose the backup files.  When I did, I received the warning about Lightroom restarting and loading the backup photos.  I hesitated for a full minute, but thought, well, isn't that what backup files are for?  So, I selected it. Lightroom opened the backup photos without any problem.  But, when I went back, and tried opening the photos that were linked to Lightroom, they were no longer linked.  When I click on the formerly linked photos, they just open in Windows Explorer, not Lightroom.  When I open Lightroom, it has says all the photos are "missing."  All of the folders are listed in my C drive (in Lightroom), not where they'd been moved to on my D drive.  The one photo I relinked, stated the photos in that folder could not be edited in Lightroom.  So, I'm afraid to try to relink anymore of them. Also, as I said, any photos that I originally imported to my D drive are not showing up in Lightroom at all.
I would say, I normally learn software quickly. That was my experience with Lightroom.  I installed it, went through all of the online training sessions, and have loved it.  Admittedly, I'm sure there are features that I don't make use of that many people do, but I'm just a passionate photography nut, not a professional.
The online help basically explains the linking, and even how to relink if you "move" a file, a folder to another location.  It doesn't cover this, or not where I can find it.
I've think I've given up on yelling at the computer, now I just have knots in my stomach about getting photos relinked.  I have probably 80% of them exported, with the adjustments I made, but that does not make me feel one bit better.
    Thanks!!!

  • I have iMovie '11, and I am unable to access mpeg HD video files that I want to edit.  The files are fine (I can open and watch them using VLC), but I cannot seem to import the files into iMovie. File Import does not work.  Any suggestions??

More detail: I have a bunch of mpeg HD video files that were shot on a SONY HDR-HC3 Handycam camcorder.  I would like to edit these into a single video production.  I can access and view the mpeg files using VLC (Quicktime does not work with them).  However, I seem to be unable to get the mpeg files to interface with iMovie '11 -- I cannot use the File --> Import command, nor can I drag-and-drop them into iMovie.
Is there something anyone might suggest to get this to work?  Or are these files incompatible with iMovie?  If so, I assume I must purchase a different video editing software program (e.g. Adobe Premeir Pro).  Suggestions???
Many thanks in advance for your time and consideration

Yes, I tried that.   The files were ordered by their original numbers as imported from the camera, but I batched them through Phocoshop to downsize all of them into a more manageable file size.   I opened that destination folder from quick time  from where it said select image sequence.   I clicked on the first one and opened it.   The result was a large image with an arrow indicating a movie was ready to go.   When I pressed the arrow, though, I realized it had only imported that one frame so there was no movie.   The files are Jpgs and are about 450 KB each.
To your knowledge are there any links to iMovie tutorials or quick time tutorials that may address this situation?  Maybe there will be one I haven't looked at yet.
        Thanks

  • How to view metadata created by lightroom in windows explorer?

I tried to create some keywords for photos, and save them into oringinal photo files by selecting photos in library then choose "Metadata>Save metadata to file" from right-click menu.
But, when I right-click original photo files in windows explorer and choose "Content>Details", these metadata set in lightroom doesn't appear.
Why? is there any way to view it without any 3rd software but windows explorer?

  • Save Metadata to File Problem

This is really puzzling me .... In Catalogue Settings, I have 'Automatically write changes into XMP' NOT ticked. When I want to save, I Select All and then 'Save Metadata to File' . However, most of the time this only saves the 'Most Selected' image, it does not create/write to XMP for all the selected files? However, I know this is meant to save to all the selected files and I also know that sometimes it does/has saved all the XMP files for me. I cannot figure out why sometimes it saves all the files and sometime only the 'most selected' ? I have tried in both Library and Develop Modules. Is there a reason for this or is it some kind of bug?
I'm using Lightroom Ver. 3 on a Mac. But I also used to have the same problem on Version 2 as well.
    Many Thanks

Switch to Grid view - anything you do in Grid view will always apply to all selected images.

  • My file names have disappeared in grid view. Thery have been replaced with a dark bar along the bottom of the previews. If I toggle using the command u it hide the bar but I still can't see the file name. In list view all the file names are OK.

The dark bar is caused by the option "Show metadata below image".
Check the settings for the metadata overlays in Grid view (basic and expanded) by clicking the little "badge" icon below the Browser and selecting "Edit". Is the filename still enabled in the list? And in a high enough position to have precedence for other metadata tags, if the space does not suffice to show all selected tags?

  • Does "save metadata to files" degrade jpeg

I have a commission to add keywords and other metadata to jpeg files already held by the client. I have done this in my LR2. I want to save the metadata to the files for transfer back to their facilities. I will eventually be re-importing the files into their copy of LR2. If I "Save metadata to files" in my LR2, will this degrade the quality of the jpg image?
    Thanks for your help.

No. The data is saved back to the file but the JPEG compression algorithm is not reapplied with every metadata save.

  • File importer detected an inconsistency in the file structure

I have been working with a project in Premiere Pro and it has been working fine until I tried exporting the project. When I export in transports to Media Encoder and exports for a while then stops and shows a yellow triangle with ! in center. The symbol then show up on the project file as well and reads "File importer detected an inconsistency in the file stucture of (file name).avi. Reading and writing this file's metadata (XMP) has been disabled."
How do i fix this/ export my project?

I have a similar issue and message , but occurs when I import AVI clips from OnLocation CS4 to Premier Pro CS4.

  • Changed DivX codec - now all DivX files give 'file importer detected inconsistency ... '

Okay, so I've upgraded to DivX 7 - or so I thought (still says 6.8.5), long story short, NONE of my previously input DivX encoded avis work in Premiere anymore (Pro CS4). I get a message "File importer detected an inconsistency in th efile structure of ...avi. Reading and writing of the file's metadata (XMP has been disabled."
They work in external media players, but anything in Premiere seems broken. I've spent WEEKS on this movie and haven't the slightest clue how to fix it. I feel like vomitting because this is for work and I can't figure this out.
    I'm desperate, PLEASE HELP!

Thank you for the answers. I did a system restore to before I changed the DivX stuff and it seems to work again.
But I hate editing these files. I think I will take up the advice to convert and replace. But question - when I replace the files in the 'Project area', will it replace all of the pieces connected to that with the correct timing in the timeline?
I would think it would, but I just want to check.
Yes; If you replace the clip in the project panel; it will replace it every palce it was used on the timeline in any sequence.
If you rwplace the clip ON the timeline, it only replaces that clip.

  • File import questions and folder display questions

    I am running LR3 on Win 7 x64. I have a few questions.
I have a hard drive assigned to drive letter "B:\" Why doesn't the file imported see this drive in the list of drives? I have to use the "other drives" and browse every time that I want to add files from this disk. Other drives, including networked drives are fine.
When importing from a main folder and including subfolders, is there a way to filter files in any manner? I never want to import web galleries that I have made in bridge, for example. These files have very small JPG files, thumbnails and web images. Is there a way to exclude them form consideration whilst importing? Is there a way to reveal and show the thumbnails with the folder structure? I don't want to have to browse to every folder individually when I am trying to import all useful images from an entire disk. If LR would at least show the folder structure of the subfolders when you select photos from a top level folder, this would help. How can I do this?
In the library view of folders, how I filter on all files in one disk? I can select a folder under the disk and see just that folder, but LR will not allow me to select the entire disk. Is there a way to do this?
How can I display the entire folder structure in the laibrary panel? Some folders are not showing their top level folders that they are inside of. How do I reveal this information?
In the library module, how can I filter on file dimensions? I thought that I had seen this, but I can no longer find this. Sorting by file dimensions would also be an option to accomplish what I am trying to do. I need to delete all thumbnail images and tiny images from the catalog. Is there an easy way to do this?

No, because you don't import a whole disk, you only import images.  And the toplevel disk bar you see there is the disk where the top level folder is stored, not the entire disk.
Let me make this clear.   When I want to view an entire disk,  I am only wanting to select images that I have already imported, not the entire disk including images that I have NOT imported.
I am not sure if you dont understand what I am saying or what.  If you have folders of images inside a top level folder, you can easily select the top folder to see all subfolders that you have imported.  Why can't I select the disk as the top level folder to see all of the images that I have imported on that disk?
I have a cattelog that has images from 8 different disks.  I use removable drive bays so all 8 disks are not available at any given time.  I just want the ability to select all images that I have imported on a disk, just like you can do at the folder level.  I am at a loss as to why this is a problem.
My point about bridge was that LR is a far superior program for organizing images due to its database.  But LR is lacking in some features that could have easily been put into it.  If bridge can do the type of filtering that it does without a good database engine, then certainly LR could and should do it.  In no way do I want to use Bridge to manage cattelogs with 150,000 images.  That would be insane.  I have no issue with the fact that you have to import your images first to use LR.  It has to be this way to work with the database.  My issue is that the filtering is not nearly as comprehensive as bridge.
I dont need help with my workflow.  Back when I shot many of the images that I am importing now into LR, there was no lightroom.  My workflow was much different back then than it is now.  My comments were that I assumed that LR could do things that it cannot, not that I needed help with my current workflow.  Much of the issues that I have now with LR are due to the old workflow and trying to import only the raw images.

Does Save Metadata to file save EVERYTHING? in other words, all Lr settings, ratings, Picks, keywords, etc?
Everything, with the exception of flags, color labels, collection membership, and stacking.
Does Lr automatically read the metadata from those XMP files when the images are imported into a different catalog?
Yes. Note that XMP files are created for raw files only; for other image formats (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, DNG), the metadata is stored within the file itself. Unfortunately, LR doesn't save metadata for videos (either in XMP sidecars or the video file).
