Viewing movie links on Safari

Recent switch to Apple from PC. I was trying to view a movie trailer, and this was the message I got:
"The media you are trying to access does not have a stream that matches your default settings. You might try running the Media HelperTM again. Check that you have all required software installed to get the most out of your audio and video experience." I'm not sure what to add here.
Also, last night I clicked on a movie link in an email: <http://www.atomfilms.com/af/content/1140_minutes> I was told that I didn't have a Media Preference, so I downloaded RealPlayer - still doesn't work.
Any suggestions here?
iMac G5 - Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

You probably have a different media player selected when you first loaded the video. The only way I can see around this is by clicking this link and setting your preferences to use Real Player. Let's just say it's not intuitive on how to change your preferences...
If that doesn't work for some reason, clear your cookies by going to Safari > Preferences > Security > Show Cookies > Remove All. This will remove the cookies and then you can click the link you posted to change your media player settings.
Hope this helps,
-Ryan

  • Can't view PDF links with Safari

When I'm online with Safari, and click on a PDF link, Safari tries to view it using QuickTime, and all I get is the first page. (I have the latest version of Adobe Reader.) If I use Safari to view a PDF file that is already on my hard drive, once again QuickTime is used, but this time it plays as a movie and flips through all the pages when I hit PLAY. Somebody help.

    Hi,
    Try changing your QuickTime preferences:
System Preferences -> QuickTime -> Advanced -> (MIME Settings...) -> Images - Still image files -> PDF Image -> Uncheck this option
That's the path for 10.4.x and it's been a while since I used Panther, but hopefully the route is still roughly the same.
    Hope that helps.

I have an iMac G5 (20 inch screen) i sight (no intel chip).Leopard OS 10.5.8. Recently I went on Facebook and tried to open a movie site someone had sent me on Facebook andwhen I tried to open the video on Facebook, I was told  I had to upgrade my Adobe Flash Player. i tried to do this, but turns out that Facebook is requiring folks to have an intel chip in order to view movies...this is outrageous!  Just think of all the folks in the world who have great running pre intel chip Apple computers. I called the Adobe Help line and was told that I really needed to buy a new computer....no thanks. How do I find a way to get a new version of Adobe for Facebook and youtube. I wish Apple could develop a way to have intel chips installed in the older computers. If you have any suggestions on this please let me know.
    Thanks, Sarah

Either get a screen cleaning cloth, or carefully us a slightly damp lint-free cloth and dry off with a dry link-=free cloth.
As to Flash Videos: I am in a similar same boat. I cannot watch flash videos on the BBC website or on BBC iPlayer, although all other flash videos (YouTube and FaceBook for example) are fine.
For reasons that passeth all understanding, they work with the PPC version of Firefox, called TenFourFoxG5.app, once you have anabled plug-ins, as it does not natively support Flash.
You can download TenFourFoxG5 from here:
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
Now for the intersting bit: TenFourFox, like Firefox, does not support most plug-ins. Unless you are prone to headaches (in which case don't) you can read about that here:
    http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported
    But there is a workaround!
Open TenFourFox and type in the address bar: about:config (no spaces) and click return. This gives you a warning that it might harm the application. Ignore that and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise' and you get the config file that you can edit - with great care.
    Look/search (scroll down) for: tenfourfox.plugins.enabled
Set it to true. (Double click it to toggle it)
Now close TenFourFox, open it again, and Flash will now work, as it now uses the plug-ins that Safari has stored.
I am using Flash 10.1.102.64 in TenFourFox and it works just fine.

  • How to view PDF files in Safari 5.1?

Every time I try to view a PDF file in Safari 5.1.1 (double clicking or using the contextual menu)i, it downloads the file instead. Is there a fix for this?
Adobe tells me that their plugin will not work with Safari 5.1 (with Lion or Snow Leopard) and suggests that I revert to Safari 5.0/Leopard.
    A.

    Go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins.
Move the PDF Browser Plug-In to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. Try viewing a PDF in Safari.

  • Clicking on links in Safari does nothing

Running OS 10.8.5 on desk top iMac.  Lately, today, have found that clicking ona link in Safari does nothing.  Simply stays on the same page I was viewing.

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

  • How to email a "link" from Safari?

Since upgrading to Lion I can't figure out how to send a "link" from a Safari page in Apple's Mail. Example: I am surfing "MacSurfer" and I click on a link to read it. I then decide to email the link to my daughter. I used to be able to open Mail and drag the URL into the body of the email. Now, in Lion, the URL of the link just says "Go To This Address". I can't seem to have both apps (Safari and Mail) open at the same time on my desktop. And what's up with the  "Go To This Address" thing in the URL so often?
I have both Mail and Safari each set up as "Full Screen" so they will be permanently stuck on a desktop in Mission Control. Could this have something to do with it?
I'm also running into another issue in Safari. If I click on a link and a new page opens many times there are no "traffic lights" (red, yellow, green in upper left of page) and the "Back" arrow is greyed out. Also, the contextual menu does not offer to go back. The only way to close the page is to quit, which causes me to close Safari all together.
    What am I missing?
And while I'm on my ***** fest here…I'm not thrilled with this new discussion board either. It wasn't broke, so why "fix" it? (Maybe I'm just getting old and don't adapt to change so well.) OK, I feel better now!

    Can someone help?
In Safari File: Mail:Link o This Page has stopped working on my macbook pro running Lion-- all of a sudden I am seeing this error message when I want mail a website link to someone:
An email message can’t be created to send the link because Safari can’t find an email application.
This message does not show when I click on a hyperlink within the body of a webpage viewed in Safari.
This does not happen in Firefox. The File: Mail Link works just fine. Maybe I should stop using Safari but I like it!!!
I checked all of the system preferences suggested in various support documents. Did I miss something?

  • Cannot view PDF files within Safari 6.0.1

I have lost the ability to view PDF files within the safari web browser.  When I press on a link to a PDF file a blank/black screen will appear.  If I right click on the page I have the ability to Save the PDF file and then I can open it in preview.
    I also have AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin installed in ~Library/Internet Plug ins/ ... folder.
I have tried deleting these files and restarting Safari but nothing seems to be working. I have tried installing the PDF Browser plugin form Schubert to no avail
Does anyone have any suggestions on how can I get the ability to view PDF files in Safari using Moutain Lios OSX?

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • How do I NOT view PDF files in Safari?

When I click on a PDF link on a webpage in Safari it no longer opens by downloading or opening in Preview. Now it opens a new tab, all in gray and displays the message that I must quit Safari, open Adobe Reader, and accept a license agreement to view the PDF in Safari. Since I don't want to do that, ever, does anyone know how I can go back to the way it was before this started? It's been doing this for a month(?) now.

There is a little tool, where you can set wheter Safari should display the PDF (and then you can download it) or not display it and download directly:
    Safari-display-or-download-pdf.app.

  • Since I have Yosemite on my iMac I can't view PDF files in Safari anymore.  It keeps telling me to upgrade my Adobe Reader, but it is the latest version.  Please help?  I don't have this problem on my Macbook that does not have Yosemite installed.

Since I have Yosemite on my iMac I can't view PDF files in Safari anymore.  It keeps telling me to upgrade my Adobe Reader, but it is the latest version.  Please help?  I don't have this problem on my Macbook that does not have Yosemite installed.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Can't open PDF links in Safari

Hi, only since a couple of days ago, I couldn't open PDF links in Safari. The page loads but nothing appears in the new window or tab.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Did you recently install Adobe Reader or is it installed in your system? If not, Safari's preference folder may be corrupt. To create a new preference file go to the Finder, drag to the desktop the com.apple.safari.plist folder found in your User Account>Library>Preferences folder.
Restart Safari and try a PDF. It ought to open within the browser. Also, you'll need to reset your custom preferences, plus any custom settings in the Edit (spelling) or View (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons etc.) menus.
If Adobe Reader is installed, and you want the PDF to open in the Safari Browser, go to your Internet Plug-ins Folder (Main or User Library in your Finder) and remove the Adobe plug-in.

  • Issue with opening PDF file link from Safari

    Hi Everyone,
I got a problem with opening PDF file link from Safari 4.04. Instead of getting a normal pdf content, it shows some weird characters. Not sure it is something wrong with Adobe Reader Plugin or Safari?
I have uploaded a screenshot of the issue in the adobe forum (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/531870). Please help!
    Many Thanks,
    John

There's nothing wrong, except the fact that you have Adobe Reader installed. You don't need it, so get rid of it; it will only cause problems with Safari. What you're seeing is the contents of the PDF file, rather than having it displayed.
If you want to download a PDF file, you can either Control-click on the link and choose "Download Linked File As…", or you can Option-click on the link for the file and it will be downloaded to your Download folder (usually your Desktop).
If you want to view a PDF file in Safari, you don't need Adobe Reader; Safari is perfectly capable of doing this by itself and has been for years. Adobe Reader will only get in the way and slow everything down.

  • After mistakenly clicking a link, my safari does not open automatically and unexpected webs open up.

I am using MacBook Air with Yosemite OS. After mistakenly clicking a link, my safari does not open automatically and unexpected webs open up. Could you please give me suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thank you

That's a bit vague, but you may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Cannot view movies in iphoto gallery

    Hi,
Using iLife '08, i have published some movies and pictures on my web gallery. All my friends and family can view the movies with no problems on their computers. If i try to view my gallery via Safari or another web browser i get a message that says:
Quicktime is unable to play this movie. Please try again.
When i try with Firefox, i get the audio, but no picture. I have deleted my gallery and started again (giving it plenty of time to upload), but no avail.
Would anyone know if this is an issue with iPhoto/Safari or Quicktime and how can i fix it?
I'm on a new iMac (intel) with op sys 10.4.10.
    Many thanks!

    cos
All my friends and family can view the movies with no problems on their computers.
This suggests that the movies themselves are fine.
Quicktime is unable to play this movie. Please try again.
When i try with Firefox, i get the audio, but no picture.
This sounds very much like a your Mac is missing the codec to play the movies properly. Try install Perian
