Viewing movie made on Final Cut on a windows PC

My friend has a mac and made a movie on Final Cut. He tried to give me a copy, but after printing it to DVD from both Final Cut and from iDVD, whenever I load the DVD into my PC i cant read it. My computer barely even recognizes that the DVD exists and instead of showing that there is a DVD but then saying the file cant be opened, it just pops up an error message after thinking for a long time and declares that the file type is not supported by Windows. I dont know much about movie formatting, but my friend insists that the DVD isnt a data disc, and that it should be formatted properly to work in either my computer or on a standard DVD player.
My question is: does anyone know of a plug-in or other adapter that I might need to view this DVD on my PC or some other work-around that might help me out?

Your friend has to export the file as a Quick Time movie and you can see it from Quick Time for Windows.Also you can burn from the Finder and make a Mac/PC format without using iDVD - I'd be surprised to find out that a PC can understand an extension like ".dvdproj"

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert them to MPEG-4, and drag those files into the open iTunes application window.

Most likely the file cannot work directly in FCE.
Please provide details on the file properties.

Camcorder Campatibility with I Movie O8 and Final Cut Express HD

I am trying to decide between the Canon HV20 and the Sony HDR-HCR camcorders, does anyone have experience editing with either using I Movie 08 or Final Cut Express HD 4

I chose the Sony because of the overall build quality: it seems like it can withstand more wear and tear from lots of use better than the Canon, and the video quality is amazing. Its only negative point would be dark indoor lighting. However I'm not sure how the Canon does in low light.

Is it worth it to start doing movie editing in Final cut vs i movie. What are the differences?

FCP does indeed have a steep learning curve, and for most (consumer) needs, iMovie is much better suited. That being said, FC (Pro and Express) have features that make movie-editing much, much easier (once you have overcome the initial learning curve, and taking into account the fact that your requirements are higher). FCP's advanced features come really into play when your movie exceeds 45 minutes of total time.
Final Cut has (for us) one true killer feature: multiple video tracks. This is usually very useful when filming the same sequence with multiple cameras (here you can see why most consumers do not need Final Cut), but it also comes in handy when assembling documentaries, as you can trackone the documentary, and tracktwo your actor.
Another very important feature (one that iMovie HD tries hard to emulate) are the live positioning and non-destructive editing/scrolling. FCP is heads and shoulders above iMovie in this regard.
For consumers also nice is the fact that transitions between clips do not shorten either clip in the time line (unlike iMovie).
There are other features that are less important to consumer-level productions (integration with Soundtrack, color correction), except one feature that I would like to see in iMovie: (nearly) arbitrary screen formats.
One really annoying fact we just found out is that if you have a new G5 (with PCI-Express slot) you need to upgrade to the new version (so be careful when you purchase an old version).

Most FCP users export them in a high-effeciency distribution/delivery compression format (e,g,, H.264/AAC) targeted for a particular application and/or device. For example, you could export using H.264/AAC at full display resolution for playback in the QT Player at an appropriate data rate if your platform and display can handle the output. TV would limid the video to 960x540 at 30/29.97 fps and normal AAC audio to 160 kbps at 48.0 KHz. Files exported for display an the Internet would be restricted by the bandwidth being targeted. Etc, etc, etc. Unless the file will only be played on your own platform, what you do not want to do is use an FCP only compression format which would limit viewers to those recipients have the same FCP codecs installed.

Final Cut Pro search window does not SORT.

I am an editor and I use Final Cut Pro everyday. I recently had to upgrade to LION because of a wonderful Quicktime update that corrupts
video codec files on Snow Leopard. So now that I have LION I can actually edit again. But, when I try to import files into Final Cut the
search window wont sort my files by date, name, etc...
It wont actually sort by anything. Every other program works fine for that, mainly After Effects. I have to manually go find files that I used
to give a certain naming system to because I could find them easily by typing in one word.
I also cannot search the Network anymore at my office which is a real pain. We dump all our finished projects onto a huge server. Now
when I need to find an old file I have to know the exact date it was made or else I have to go searching through every folder in our server.
Any body know of any way to fix these issues without having to rewrite code which I really don't want to do with my company computer.
Also our IT people refuse to learn anything at all about MAC computers which is SO helpful...

Im not sure what you are referring to. Maybe I didn't explain the problem correctly.
Final Cut seems as if it is not indexing the files. Most of the time it won't even show me dates (modified, created, etc...) just dashes. Then if I do what you are describing and try to sort it at all it stays in the same exact order. I can't even sort alphabetically.

Technically yes, as long as you use the same Apple ID on both machine's to purchase it and to download it. The Mac in the other state will have to meant the system requirements for FCP.

I removed a movie I had made and now when I try to open final cut pro, all the stuff shows up with the names, etc, but that is it, I don't get anything else, and, final cut does not show at the top of my computer. I have the 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, any help will be appreciated. Larry

Sounds like you may have deleted more than just the movie file. It the FCP application in the Applications folder? if so, try launching from there. If not, you'll neeed to uninstall the app completely using this: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/ then reinstall from the original install discs.
You may want to first try trashing FCP's preferences.

Problem playing video made from final cut

In my digital media class we use intel mac pros with the newest version of final cut pro. I made a 4 minute horror movie using a sony FX-1 HDV camera.
When i exported it from final cut, i exported it as a quicktime using the HDV 1080i60 video codec. Then i brought the finished final cut quicktime clip in quicktime and exported it as a pure .mov file that is 881 megabytes in size.
After that i put it on my flash drive and brought it home to my windows XP machine with specs listed below.
I attempted to play the movie and it said i needed a codec to play it. There was no video but the audio was clear and pristine.
Obviosly my PC is well beyond that of a normal consumer PC (seeing as it was built as a gaming PC) and it cant be that i havent met the requirements.
I cant find the HDV 1080i60 codec any where on the internet and the apple support team doesn't list a phone # to call.
I also have a 22" sceptre 2ms 300 nm, 2000:1 contrast ratio monitor capable of playing 1080p video so it cant be the monitor.
can anyone help me to play the video. Im running the newest version of quicktime 7 pro.
Help me plz, i would greatly appreciate it.

Export to QuickTime movie and set the size to 1080 and the codec as H.264.
Adjust the audio codec also to help reduce the file size.

How to import subtitles made with Final Cut in DVD studio Pro?

DVD Studio Pro can work with STL subtitle files. they are nothing more spectacular than a plain text file.
There's a ton of information in DVDSP's online manual, under the Help menu bar item.
search that pdf for "Creating an STL Format Subtitle File".
This file can be configured to display when the user wants to see it or made permanent with the "Force Display" option.
If you export your FCP Timeline the subtitles on it will be burned into the video permanently.

How do I move my default final cut file location from the hard disk to an external thunderbolt drive?

I have FCPX and just bought a MUCH faster TB external drive and don't want to work off the internal hard drive anymore due to speed and space. When I first open FC it shows my external (Lacie) drive but then goes away and only shows the internal Mac drive. I cannot figure out why it would find the Final Cut Projects and Events files on the external hard drive and then make them go away. Please help if you know the answer. Thanks.

I've experienced that behavior if the external drive has a file named something like AVCHD, DCIM, movies or similar at the root level of the drive.

MOV files onto final cut pro?

Hey, I shot some footage on my Canon Rebel T2i and have put them all on my computer as MOV files. Now when I drag and drop them into final cut, they are choppy and every 5 seconds or so a pop up comes up telling me frames have been dropped.
Is there a special way i should be importing the clips? Ive only ever used final cut for mini DV cameras before.

YOu can't edit the .MOV files directly from the camera. You have to convert them to ProRes first. There are several ways to do this.

But...you have to convert. The .MOV files directly from the camera are H.264, and aren't well suited for editing. NOTE The files will get MUCH larger. This is normal. Watch my tutorial first for the tapeless workflow in FCP. The backup process is essential.
