Viewing My Other iPhoto Library

So earlier today I did something with creating a second iPhoto library. It was all by accident, and I can't figure out why I did. I figured even if I did though, I would still be able to access my first iPhoto library. Now I can't figure out how to access my first one, which had a lot of important photos on it. I have found the file type thing of the first library on Finder, but every time I try to open it, it doesn't open. iPhoto always opens with no pictures in it.
I am used a MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8), iPhoto '08.
Thanks in advance for the help.

when you double click on an iPhoto library it opens iPhoto and iPhoto then opens its last used library - so you need to switch libraries back to your previous library - by default it is in your pictures folder
To switch depress the option key and launch iPhoto - use the select library command to select your original library

  • Viewing imported hidden iPhoto Library photos in Aperture

I recently downloaded the trial version of Aperture and imported my iPhoto library. When I did that, hidden photos/events (marked as hidden in iPhoto) were not visible in Aperture. There is a "place-holder" with the original iPhoto event names for the now Aperture projects, but no photos are visible and I can't find a way to unhide them.
I have since purchased and registered Aperture, but this problem persists. Does anyone know how I can make these hidden files visible in Aperture?

In the top right corner of the browser is a search box. By default it is set to show unrated or better images. If you click the triangle beside the magnifying glass you'll get a drop down. One of the choices is *Show All*. Select that . You're hidden images should appear.

  • View shared iMac iPhoto library on iPad?

This would be one of the reasons for me to buy the iPad: if you could view all the photos that are in iPhoto on my iMac. Syncing doesn't make sense, just doesn't fit. And there is wifi, so should be possible... Simplify Photo used to do this I think, but they closed shop....
Any ideas? Maybe I'm missing something, and it's just a standard feature. Would make sense....
    Thanks!

Does that make it any less relevant? Has this issue been resolved in the last 9 months?
No, it just probably means that the OP has long since moved on.
You know you come to a forum and post a new topic and get hammered for not searching. You search for a topic and resurrect and old one and get hammered for posting in an old one.
No one was "hammering" you. It gets suggested that people search the forum to find answers to their questions before starting a new post. I've never seen anyone suggest that you go looking for dormant posts and answer them, though you are, of course, free to do so.
Most people here are pretty polite and that's enforced by the Hosts. However, it's still good policy, in my opinion, to assume that people didn't mean to be rude, rather than immediately getting defensive. I find it makes my time here much less stressful.
    Best of luck.

  • How do i view backed up iPhoto library from a macbook pro, onto my air?

Im trying to import my images or view them at least, from my time machine back ups from a now defunct macbook pro, onto my new Macbook Air. As an artist, I need to have these on file for my work.

  • How do I create a single iPhoto Library on a server that multiple people can use at the same time?

Currently our architecture office runs iPhoto buddy to manage our iPhoto libraries but we want to be able to have multiple users viewing the same iPhoto Library? Currently it only allows one user to access this library. How do we do this?

we want to be able to have multiple users viewing the same iPhoto Library?
Do you need to have the multiple users to be able to edit and otherwise manage the photos or just view them?
If it's the latter take a look at  Media Pro 1.  It's a multiuser and cross platform digital asset management application.  With it you store your source files on a server along with the catalog file that Media Pro uses to manage the photos.  One user can manage the catalog file while unlimited others can view the file in read only mode with the Media Pro Reader. You can learn more about MP1 at DAM_Forum The DAM Forum
It's a professional and  more robust system of managing photos than iPhoto is.

  • Corrupted iphoto library

i've recently experienced volume structure problem with my hard disk and want to recover my iphoto library containing around 100GB of picrtures. The problem I have -
    - all the data (originals) of the photos are there when i viewed contents of the library. when i tried to view contents using iphoto library manager, the events, albums and the count of pictures are also there, but
    - iphoto said "the library has issues that require rebuilding to correct" and then the rebuild keeps running until it hanged at "25244 versions restored."
    - i could not rebuild the library using IPLM either. "an error occured trying to open the database at...library.apdb (14)
Is there anything I can do to recover the library?

thank you. i unfortunately do not have a valid backup - the time machine backup did not work for unknown reason.
i just feel particularly frustrated because (1) all the originals and the modified versions of the photos are intact; and (2) all the events and albums are visible from IPLM. the two combined should suffice to give me back a valid library! i do not want to go through the pain to reconstruct all the events, keywords and albums by importing the pictures to a brand new library again.

  • Aperture 2.0 doesn't show all of iPhoto library

The first time I pulled up the iPhoto browser within Aperture, it didn't find any of my photos and then after a few minutes, it finally loaded in about half of my events. So not only is it showing an incomplete view of my iPhoto library, but I also can't get into any of the events or any of my iPhoto albums...nothing I click on responds..the browser just freezes up.
    Is anybody else experiencing this?
Just tried it again, and this time it allowed me to click around but it still is only loading in half of my events.

I eventually found what the problem was on my end...
I tried lots of different things (placing my iPhoto library on another volume, rebuilding it, renaming all albums/events names which contained special characters (even not so special, such as é, à, ë), recreating the AlbumData.xml file, etc.), nothing worked.
Finally, I found that the problem came from one single picture that was included in the Event which was the first that was not shown in the iPhoto browser (in other words: the browser showed 14 Events out of a few hundreds - the picture was in the 15th Event). I guess it was corrupted or something.
I deleted this picture and now, the iPhoto browser in Aperture shows ALL my Events. Happy

  • IPhoto Library... Events vs. Photos

When I look at the left side of the iPhoto screen, under Library, I see Events & Photos. What's the difference? Is it all the same just different views?
    Thanks...
Trying to get familiar with '08...

Yes - it is two different views of the iPhoto library - you may want to go through the iPhoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto

  • Can't find my iPhoto Library on Aperture

I just downloaded Aperture and couldn't wait to see my iPhoto Library in the new Aperture. But when I opened Aperture the photos shown in the Library are old photos (5,000+) that I have deleted from my iPhoto Library. In fact nothing newer than 2009 is showing. I tried to import my current Library but it wasn't even shown as an option. HELP!!! How do I get rid of the 5,000 old photos I don't want and get to my current iPhoto Library?

What are the system version and program versions (iPhoto, Aperture) you are using? If you are opening your iPhoto Library in Aperture your profile signature ( Mac OS X (10.6.3)) cannot be current?
Have you more than one iPhoto Library? It looks like you are viewing an older iPhoto lIbrary in Aperture? Or are you viewing the Trash, if you only see images that should be dleted?
    Try the following:
Quit Aperture and open iPhoto on the iPhoto Library you want to view in Aperture.
Look in iPhoto's Trash. Check if there  are photos in it, that you trashed accidentally. Put back anything that should not be trashed. Then empty it, if there are still 5000 photos in it.
Unhide any photos that are set to be hidden (marked by a red "x"). Aperture cannot reveal photos hidden in iPhoto.
Then use the command (from iPhoto's main menu bar):  File > Open library in Aperture
Do you now see the same images in Aperture as in iPhoto? Your iPhoto events will be appear as projects.

  • Transfer photos from one iPhoto library to another

I created a second iPhoto library and I want to copy photos from the original iPhoto library to the new iPhoto library.  Not sure how to do it.  Seems like I should be able to use "export" from the file menu, but when I get to where I select where the group of photos should go, the other iPhoto library is nowhere to be found.

Depends exactly on what you want to move:
Just a Photo? Then Export it to the Finder (the desktop or wherever) then switch to the other Library and import it.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
If you want the Photo, all the added metadata, edit history, versions  and so on use iPhoto Library Manager

  • Moving photos from one iPhoto library to another

Is there a way to move photos from one iPhoto library to another? I tried to use export, and that puts the photos in the other iPhoto library (I can see the photo if I open Hard drive>user>pictures>iPhoto Library but when I open iPhoto it is not in that Library's library.
If I have not made myself clear, please ask and I'll try again.

Is there really no other way than via third party software??
Yes there is, detailed above: export from one, import to another.
I love using iPhoto but this is a real drawback.
    Wow, really?
I have bought an external disk so i can free the space on my laptop by moving photos and now I have to buy some software in order to do that??
You don't have to buy it. What's more the free version of iPhoto Library Manager will move up to 20 pics at a time. And the paid version is only $20.
BTW: you can run an entire library from the external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Moving events from one iPhoto library to another

I want to move some events from one iPhoto library to another.  Does anyone know that this is possible and if so, how do I do it?

iPhoto cannot do it . The full version of iPhoto Library Manager can transfer events between libraries, or Aperture can do this.
You can download iPhoto Library Manager here:  iPhoto Library Manager
If you want to save the money for additional tools, doit manually:
Export the photos from each event you want to transfer to a folder.
Import the folders with images to your other iPhoto library.
You have to make up your mind, if you want to move the original files to your other library or the edited versions.  Only exporting the original files instead of the edited files will preserve the full quality. Actually, you want to export both. Using iPhoto library Manager will ensure, that both will be transferred and paired as one photo.

  • How do I retrieve my iphoto library from the Time Machine back-up drive, when the original iphoto library was on a separate external hard drive that has crashed?

I recently backed up my iMAC and Simpletech external hard-drive to a 1 TB WD Passport  external hard drive, using Time Machine's back-up utility.  Today, I tried to access my iphoto library from the back-up drive, but received a message saying "the iPhoto library is a Time Machine back up, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPHoto with options key held down to choose another library."  Since my Simpletech died on me, what other iPhoto library is it expecting me to access?  I know approximately 169 GB were backed up, and my iPhoto library is roughly 54 GB.
    Angie in Charlotte

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into
    Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • My iPhoto Library is too big for my iMac

My iPhoto Library is now 272gb so is taking all the space on my iMac, so I need to move it off the Mac. I believe I can copy it to an external drive and then just "point" iPhoto at it by holding down the Alt key on launch?
But I am very nervous about losing any or all of my photos if I do this as I don't have a back-up (due to the library size). I don't even have space to run Time Machine. So I would like to check that I would be doing the right thing above please?
Also, I would appreciate any tips on organising photos in my own folders outside iPhoto, please.
I think it is best to import to my own folders from the camera because I tend to open photos in different applications, depending on what I want to do – Preview, Adobe Bridge, Photoshop and now possibly Aperture or Lightroom, because I need to upgrade to either Aperture or Lightroom.
If I import photos to iPhoto I end up exporting hi-res versions to edit in Photoshop etc before publishing them or sending them to anyone. Thus I am actually storing the photos twice, so it is small wonder I have run out of space.
I also have an iPhoto Library on my laptop, and many of these are duplicates of the other iPhoto Library. But I do not have enough space to merge them and get iPhoto Manager to remove the duplicates.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Sarah

    Thank you Larry,
I was wondering how professional photographers organised their work as they would quickly outgrow the space on a Mac hard drive the same as I have now I have been doing a lot more photography for publication.
Because of this I use different programmes for different requirements (either displaying, editing or adding to the photos' inbuilt file information),  but keeping the original photos in the iPhoto Library and Hi-Res JPG copies to work on in my own folder before submitting to a client just means I am using double the amount of space to store the photos. And I have set Photoshop as the edit programme, I know about that, and yes they pretty much all need tweaking in Photoshop. It improves them greatly, plus many need cropping.
I am aware of the importance of back-up and even though money is tight I will be getting a new LaCIe external drive to ensure I have enough space for Time Machine to back-up both iPhoto Libraries from both my Macs. But in the meantime I only have space to back them up manually on one LaCie external drive, formatted as Mac OS extended (Journaled) as you say. I hope I can eke out the couple of GBs space left on my Macs until I can get the new drive.
I am not happy about running the iPhoto Libraries from an external drive but due to the space problems I have no alternative.
Going forward I seem to have three alternatives. Either transfer them to Aperture or Lightroom or avoid duplication and storage problems by keeping the originals filed in my own folders for opening in one of these management programmes as required. I currently have folders for both hi-res and low-res edited versions of each photo in a project, as well as the originals in iPhoto. So the best filing system and the best way to reduce storage space is what I was wanting advice on.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE NEEDED ON REMOVING DUPLICATES
Additionally, many of the photos in my laptop iPhoto Library are duplicates of the ones in my main iMac iPhoto Library. Will iPhoto Library Manager work on libraries that are on an external drive? And do you know if it is possible to use iPhoto Library Manger to merge them on my external drive and remove duplicates please?
WILL IPHOTO LIBRARY MANAGER WORK ON LIBRARIES ON AN EXTERNAL DRIVE?
Final question: If I have two iPhoto Libraries on my external drive, is it safe to change their filenames to distinguish between them? Will iPhoto recognise libraries where the names have changed?
    Many thanks,
    Sarah

  • Small fear i've lost everything.  in Finder i see iPhoto Library (original)

So... last night I went to try and recover some photos specifically from an old Time Machine backup. I discovered (and remembered) that they seem to be saved in entire libraries, not individual files/folders from which I can pull certain photos. (Correct, so far?)
I went back to a November backup when in Time Machine, clicked on the iPhoto library, and clicked restore. Turns out I didn't have enough HD space. So I thought I just stopped and left things as they were. However, this morning, I went to open up iPhoto and low and behold there's NO photos there.
    Sidenote - I'm a photographer, I can't lose this!
I then looked at Finder and see that I DO have two iPhoto libraries, one titled "iPhoto library" (48.3 MB) and the other "iPhoto library (original)" (35.96 GB).
Could someone please help put me at rest and let me know how to access that "original" library. I clicked on it from the Finder and the "current" one is what appears. So now, forgive me, but I'm just a bit afraid to try anything else.
Regarding backups I think I've learned my lesson and will export the original photos to folders on an external drive, rather than just doing the Time Machine backups.
    THANKS in advance!

Do you think my original idea of exporting the files individually is a good one, or the backups would do just that? Just looking for other thoughts...
I think the key to backing up is redundancy:
My Library lives on my iMac.
It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected. For this job I use DejaVu because it makes a simple back up that is clear and can be tested easily without doing an full restore.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. Personally I use SmugMug but there are many options including flickr. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size, or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you will need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a restore.
an I now delete "iPhoto library" from my Finder, as it hopefully would always use "iPhoto library (original)" from now on? I'm thinking after I delete it, I can rename the "original" one to just "iPhoto library."
    Yes and Yes.
If you're only recovering particular photos, try the iPhoto: File Menu -> Browse back Ups
