Viewing or working with videos in iPhoto

I downloaded a bunch of pictures and 1 video from my Canon camera and I can't play the video in iPhoto. How do I play it and how do you work with videos?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. When you installed Snow Leopard did you select the option to include Quicktime Player 7 in the installation? It would be in the Applications/Utilities folder. If it's not there then do a custom install of SL and select just QT Player 7.
If it's there then it could be a codec issue as Roddy has already pointed out.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Viewing and working with JPEGs without iPhoto

    Hello:
I am attempting to upload photos to my own gallery web page. I do not want to use iPhoto because iPhoto:
    1. Forces you to use Kodak for printing photos.
    2. Forces you to use .mac for web pictures.
I would like to be able to:
    1. See my pictures as thumbnails in Finder.
    2. When browsers launch file dialogs to upload pictures I would like to see the thumbnails as well.
These features appear to be OS dependent, because I have this capability on both Windows XP and SUSE Linux.
I have not been able to find any way of setting the MIME type mapping for Finder or the file dialogs.
    Please help.
    Thank You
    Matthew Harelick
    Mac Mini 2.4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    1. Forces you to use Kodak for printing photos.
iPhoto connects to Kodak Printing Services for ordering prints online, but you can still print to any local or network connected printer
    2. Forces you to use .mac for web pictures.
If you File>Export images to a Web Page, it creates a gallery page in your ~/Sites folder, but there's no reason you have to upload it to .Mac. You can also scale and change format of images when exporting to a folder using the File Export option in the same window.
    1. See my pictures as thumbnails in Finder.
You can use Icon View (⌘ 1) with 'Show Icon Preview' selected in the view options (⌘ J) or use Column View (⌘ 3 )with 'Show Preview Column' selected in the view options.
    2. When browsers launch file dialogs to upload pictures I would like to see the thumbnails as well.
Same thing.. on the dialog window that opens for you to select the files, click the column button on the toolbar to switch to Column view
If you have not imported your pictures into iPhoto and don't intend to, some things-changing format and some very basic editing-can be done with Preview, or you could get another image editor/browser. But just from what you've said here, there's no reason that iPhoto wouldn't suffice.

  • Win7-64 Photoshop CC blank Save As dialog, then crash, when working with video / frame animations

Hi, I recently updated to CC from CS6 and am having issues when working with PSDs containing video layers, or are set up as frame animations:  When attempting to Save As, the dialog will be completely blank except for the Save and Cancel buttons.   If I press cancel, then return to Save As, CC then often crashes.
Here is the Error Event from Event Viewer:

So far I am only having these issues if I have been working with video layers and then frame animations.  Frame animations in particular seem to cause instability as I can often work with video layers all day without a problem.  Then if I import video frames to layers, or open a PSD containing a frame animation, the Save As may not necessarily work.
Sometimes closing and restarting Photoshop will allow me to save again, but then sometimes a whole system reboot is required.  It is only temporary though.
I am not running antivirus software or other apps aside from what starts at boot.

Frustrating that this thread has petered out, since I'm having the exact same issue. Did you ever find a way to improved stability?
Also of note, the issue followed me across machines. Two weeks ago I purchased a new machine, figured if that didn't solve the problem nothing would... It didn't. :\
The only similar factors are that the machines both are 64bit Windows 7 (a fresh OEM install on the new box) and have nVidia-brand graphics cards. (Again, though - not the SAME graphics card, picked up a new one with the new machine.) No drive cloning was involved: this is completely new hardware, a fresh factory install of Windows 7, different antivirus (went from AVG to Avast), and new download of Photoshop CC from CreativeCloud.
Looks like our event details are quite similar, too.

  • Logic slow when working with video

    Hi there
I'm trying to work with video in Logic 8 but it slows down pretty dramatically when I imported the video. Are there any settings I can tweak to get the action to run more smoothly. The playhead jumps very slowly around, it takes the video a few seconds to start to play after pressing play in Logic. The video file I'm using is a Quicktime Mp4, around 288 Mb in size. The details of my system are on the signature below. Any help is much appreciate it.
    Thanks - Gunnar

Don't use mp4, this is most likely the cause of your problem, especially if the video codec of your file is H.264. Mp4 allows you to have better perceived video quality with a lower file size, but the tradeoff is that it makes your computer do a lot of work in real time to decode the video.. Thus the slowdown of logic.
Try converting your video file to QuickTime DV, this is a much more performance-neutral format, your video file will be much bigger but it won't be making any huge demands on your system to play back.
Also, if your movie is too long it can also cause slowdowns in your logic project. When working on feature length films, they are always divided into reels of around 25 minutes each which keeps things manageable. If your film is very long you should divide it up.

  • My iPod Video won't work with videos!

Just want to thank you for this brilliant solution. It worked!! I also want you to know that I actually went into the apple store today, and none of the clerks had any idea how to fix this. That excludes the ''genius bar'' which had a five hour wait for appointments! Thank you so much again, merrymusic

  • Anyone recommend a good tutorial for 'working with video' in Logic?

I've worked with video a fair amount, but only ever skimmed the surface and found odd workarounds to get things to happen how I want them.
The manual is scant when it comes to features such as SMPTE locking and beat mapping scenes to bar lengths and all sorts of other tricks I'm probably unaware of.
The only Macprovideo I can find is from 2005 and whilst I'm sure has some common features, is perhaps not up to date enough. And this http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul07/articles/logictech_0707.htm is ok for a quick overview but I'd like to see some of it in action (or at least have more detailed exercises).
Does anyone know any tutorials they'd recommend? Cheers

  • Working with video files on compatible external drive with imovie09

I have run out of room on my MacBook Pro hard drive, so I have moved all of my video files onto a compatible external hard drive. How do I work with these file in imovie09, do I need to import the files back onto the computer or can I work with them from the external hard drive, if so how. Also, is it possible to after completing editing to save just the project on the computer rather than the hard drive or will that cause a "source video" issue.
Ultimately, I would like to have all of the source video saved on the external hard drive and the projects saved on the computer
I had no problems working and saving the files when just using the computer, the external hard drive has complicated things for me. Thanks.

How did you move all of your video files? The best way in iMovie '09 is to do it in the Event Library. Make sure you're viewing hard drives (click the disk icon at the upper-right corner of the list of events). Then drag the events you want from your internal hard disk to the external one. That way iMovie keeps track of where the source files are located.
You can do the same with project files in the Project Library, too.
If you've already moved the files in the Finder, to do it cleanly, I'd recommend moving them back to the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders in your Movies folder. Then launch iMovie and move them as explained above.
Or, make sure the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders are at the top level of your external hard drive. When you launch iMovie, it looks in those places for footage and projects, and will make them available.

  • Trouble with videos in iphoto

My husband was trying to make a slideshow on iphoto.  He got a message stating there wasn't enough video space so he deleted the videos from our computer AND emptied the trash on the computer.  He was thinking this would free up the video space.  We paid to have someone recover the videos.  We only got a few back and some of them don't really work properly.  Now iphoto is so messed up!!  All of my albums are gone, but the pictures are still there in the events folder. When you look at the pictures and click on them, some of them come up as an exclamation point.  You can see the videos there, but when you click on them, they do not open.  Also, I tried to upload videos/photos from my camera and the videos wouldn't upload.  I have tried to rebuild the library and now in the process of creating a new library.  I'm noticing though that the videos aren't in the Originals folder that I'm trying to rebuild from.  We do have SOME of the photos/videos backuped to an external hard drive but are missing about 2 years worth!  THis is my youngest son's entire life!!!  I'm so devastated!  Please someone HELP and point me in the right direction!  Thanks!
    Oh and I have iphoto '09 v. 8.1.2 and MAC OS X v. 10.5.8.

One should maintain a minimum of 10 GB of free space on the boot drive (20 GB) if you use iDVD for optimal system and applicaiton performance.
The exclamation point is an indication that the file path to the original file has been broken. Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Firefox 12 flash player not working with video on Facebook

Using Firefox 12, newest flash player 32 bit -- embedded video won't work on Facebook. I have tried another computer with XP SP3, completely removed firefox, flash, started in safe mode with add ons disabled, even created a new profile with no addons at all, and nothing seems to fix the problem. Video plays fine in Internet Explorer. That said, YouTube works fine so I don't think its a flash 'only' problem. (I right clicked on video to make sure flash was playing the video and not html 5.)

Is the Flash player loaded if you right-click that black box where the player should be?
Does it help if you try to "Disable the hardware acceleration" in the Flash Player?

  • Photoshop CC: program error occures when working with videos

Whenever I'm trying to trim a video in Photoshop CC I'm running into this error:
"Could not complete your request because of a program error"
I can't close it by clicking "okay", so I have to close photoshop via task manager.
    - I also came across this error when I was trying to duplicate a text layer while working with a video.
    - When I was using Photoshop CS6 several months ago trimming videos worked fine.
    - I've tested if the problem appears on my laptop (Win7, i5, on board intel hd graphics) in Photoshop CC, and it does not!
    - I've deinstalled all Adobe Products (and their plugins) and ran Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner without any errors, then reinstalled Photoshop CC.
    - I restored my preferences.
    - My graphic board drivers are up to date.
    - My computer is a Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium, Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 GHz,  16 GB RAM with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 graphic board.
I honestly don't know what's the matter. Unfortunately I couldn't find any other thread with the same problem.
Hope you'll be able to help
    Thanks in advance!

OK.  I suspect you might have run into one of the Mavericks bugs then.  I would certainly expect your system to handle 720 without complaining.
Apparently Adobe have made Apple aware of these bugs, and have no more control over rectifying them.
Try Google with 'Photoshop cc video Mavericks'
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5826052
I am not aware of any workarounds, but I use a PC and use PremPro for video anyway, but that's not to say there isn't one.  If this thread doesn't bring you an answer, start a new one with a subject line something like:

Video is like Image formats, but on steroids. Also, many formats, such as AVI can have 100's of different CODEC's inside them. It is almost like having a JPEG, that contains a TGA, or a TIFF, or a PCX, or any number of what we see as other formats. It can be daunting, but let's start at the beginning.
For a discussion on formats, such as AVI, MOV, WMV, etc., see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037?tstart=0
As CODEC's are the "building blocks" of AV files, this article is good too: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811?tstart=0
As you see from that first link, the format is just a "wrapper," and can contain all sorts of "stuff." That FAQ Entry will tell you how to "peek inside" the wrapper. That is what we need, as Mylenium asks. If you can let us know all about the faulting files, maybe someone can help you.
Also, PS has somewhat limited Video support, both on Decode and Encode, so, and depending on what you have, you might have to convert that/those file(s).
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Does a youview+ box DTR T-2100 work with video sen...

    Hello,
I've read that some youview boxes won't work well with video senders because the analogue (scart - connected to the video sender) and digital (HDMI - connected to the main telly) cannot send signals simultaneously.
Can anyone confirm if this is the case with the BT/Humax DTR T-2100 box?
    Thanks
    Jez

They work fine, mine outputs to a hdmi splitter, one going to the tv and one via hdmi over cat 5 to the kitchen. The box also outputs via scart to a video sender to the bedroom. Everything works fine.

  • Adobe CS4 not Working with video

I started a project in HDV.. 720P. And i tried importing some Video and its not working. Its stuck on the first frame only. Even When I Export. I exported an animation i did in Carrara in 720. Imported it into CS4 and it it stuck on the first frame. It's not the only video that doesn't work. A lot of my footage is not importing right. It's running perfectly in VLC and even in Vegas 9. I don't know why it's not working. Any Help fellas. I thought it might be a Codec problem but it's not . It should come withe Premiere. And i tried GSPOT and it said no codec needed. I'm primarily working with AVIs. I even tried changing the Extension. No luck Please. I need Help ASAP. Marketing assignment due soon.
    (2nd EXPLANATION SAME PROB)
Hey Guys. Just got adobe Premiere CS4. I've been trying to import some footage into it for editing but it's either a hit or miss. I thought it was my computer and or graphics card but when i tried it on my PC instead of my laptop i had the same issue. I start with a new document HDV. With 720P at 25fps. And i tried importing footag but all i get it the first frame or so.. I Rendered an animation out of carrara withe 1280 X 768.. or whatever it was and it didnt budge.. Even after i pressed enter to render work area.. I tried importing some other footage and it didn't work.. I then tried importing other 720P stuff.. some work some didn't. But without audio. I imported a clip of Sherlock holmes in 720P. It looked nice.. but again.. no audio.. Do i need codecs? or something. I mean all the videos that i try to import play well in VLC.. I even tried changing the extension from avi, to mov, to mp4... Nothing.. CS4 even rejected MOV, and WMV... wierd.. ok.. well any ideas folks.. I ned this up and running asap. Becuse before i start working in after effects and all that i'd like to know this is working first.. or so god help me i'll use Vegas.. =(

First let me say that I have been fighting PrPro CS4 for about 4-5 days now, and only just started reading in here to figure out what i could do to "fix" my problem. I was having all sorts of fits with the playback inside of PrPro freezing and then "not responding." I came across all kinds of posts about computers, memory, drivers and settings, operating systems and all of that. It wasn't until some one that is also having struggles stated that they had a USB drive for unrelated storage did the light go on. So I disconnected my 2 USB drives (one a 250GB desktop Thermaltake drive and the other a 320GB WD My Passport) and loaded up a project that had all been rendered useless. VOLA, working like a charm now. Just like old times, I love my PrPro CS4, where about 2 hours ago I was ready to start working on my resume...lol
Bottom line, don't leave a USB drive hooked up.
