Viewing PDF in OSX vs Windows

Hey...
I've looked through the discussions, I've searched Google and Adobe...but am finding no answers.
I create newsletters in Pages...I export as PDF. It looks great and all formatting consistent when I open via Preview.
But when I use Adobe Reader to view it (in OSX or Windows)...it loses some formatting. ie..text turns white, arrows are white (when should be black).
I've tried not to overlap anything...text boxes with arrows or pics with other things...(as much as I hate everything floating alone).
Any thoughts would be great!
Thanks,

Are you using attributes like shadows ?
We explained here many times that Pages uses several system's features to display several things.
The result is that these things aren't passed to the other world.
It's explained by Apple in:

  • How do I view pdfs in Safari for Windows?

Have to use Windows 7 at work. Fortunately, I can at least use Safari as my browser. Unfortunately, I can't view pdfs in Safari for Windows but I can with FireFox and IE. Any way to resolve?

What happens when you try to view a pdf file on Safari? In my experience Safari has never worked well in Windows. Use a browser you know works.
Did you check for a PDF reader plugin for Safari?

Sounds like something has been added into the Reader folder. I would recommend uninstalling, running http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html, removing any left over parts of the Reader folder (this might have been the problem), reboot, and reinstall. Hopefully that solves the problem. For future question about Reader, you should consider asking in the Reader forum, this is not it.

  • View PDF link in new window

From my "main" pdf, how can i view an attached (or embedded) pdf link in a new window? Currently the link opens in the same window as the main pdf. I selected "go to page view" and viewing in new window isn't an option.

    Thank you for your reply!
I'm on Mac Acrobat X. My goal is to send out one pdf file and have all pdf links embedded. I'm in need of specifics so I'll explain my process...
    Open main pdf
    Place other pdf in attachments
Create link on main pdf page
    "Go to page view"
    "Next"
    Highlight the attachment link
    "Set link"
Control click to get to properties for new link
    "Actions"
Highlight—Go to a page in this document (if I highlight anything else it goes outside of my pdf file rather than using attached links)
    "Edit"
And the only 2 options I have are 1.)Use page number and zoom to fit page, and 2.)Used named destination which takes me no where
    Your thoughts would appreciated.

  • View PDF in IE10 Browser (windows 8)

Is there a way to click a link for a pdf and view it in a new tab on the browser?  Within windows 7 it worked fine, but I am not finding how to do it in windows 8, either the new metro browser or the desktop browser. It will only open PDFs in Adobe Reader or Microsoft Reader.

In metro mode, IE10 on Windows 8 always runs with Enhanced Protected Mode enabled, and plugins like Adobe Reader is not compatible with Enhanced Protected Mode.  That's why your PDF file will be opened in your default PDF viewer.  In desktop mode, Enhanced Protected Mode is off by default in IE10, so you should be able to view the PDF file inside the browser.

  • Viewing pdf in browser window

I know this problem has been addressed in NUMEROUS other threads, but I've read through at least 20 of them now, including threads elsewhere on the web, and NONE of them solve my problems. Neither Safari 3.1.2 or Firefox 3.0.1 will open pdfs within a browser window on my machine (OS 10.4.11, PowerBook G4, pre-Intel chip). I have Adobe Reader 9.0.0 installed, but both the "display pdf in browser using" and "allow fast web view" options are turned off. I have also removed any Adobe pdf plugins from my user/Library/Internet Plug-Ins and /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folders. In an attempt to get things to work, I downloaded and installed PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.3. This plugin is in both folders, and both browsers recognize that the plugin is installed. But both still insist on opening pdf through Adobe Reader. I can get both browsers to open pdfs using the plugin if I use the "open with" option on a pdf and request either Safari or Firefox. In these cases, the pdf will open seemlessly within the browser window. But any time I try to open a pdf through a website, Safari immediately saves to disk and Firefox asks me what I want to do with it (save or open in Reader). There's kind of a workaround in Firefox: if I specify that pdfs be opened by Firefox instead of Reader, they will open automatically in Firefox when I click on them, but they actually get downloaded to my desktop and then opened in a new browser window, so they're not really being opened within the browser--and my desktop ends up cluttered with pdfs that I don't want.
I'm at the end of my rope here, so if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing them.
    Thanks,
    jd

First off, thanks for the help. It appears that things are working now, for the most part--the odd behavior was specific to the particular online pdf file that I happened to be using to test things. I wasn't control clicking on that one, and it still insisted on downloading. But all other pdfs appear to behave normally. Which really does solve my problem, since the right-click option in Safari to "view in Preview" gives me all the functionality that I get with Reader, only quicker.
But just to convince you I'm not crazy for expecting pdf-viewing menus in my browser window, this is from Safari Help:
"When you click a link for a PDF file, Safari displays it in your browser window and provides a toolbar to help you view the file... To view the toolbar, put the mouse pointer in the middle of the PDF page, near the bottom. If you move the pointer away from the toolbar, it disappears after a moment. The toolbar has four icons. Point to each icon to see a label."
I don't get the toolbar. I still have some control through the ctrl-click menu, but no toolbar. The same goes for the google pdf browser plugin. This is from Schubert IT:
"The Schubert|it PDF Browser Plugin perfectly integrates into your web browser and with its great Mac look & feel it looks like it always belonged into it. Easy to use and intuitive toolbar buttons give you quick access to the most common features, and a standard Action menu lets you access everything else – even while the toolbar is hidden in cases when you need the maximum screen real estate."
I can't find the toolbar anywhere.
As for OSX being superior to Windows in every regard, I am pretty much inclined to agree with you. Generally Mac deals with pdfs much more smoothly, which is why I was frustrated with my problem. I still think that the Windows browsers play better with Adobe Reader--the integration of Reader into the browser window seems pretty nice on my PC at work. But I'm happy with the solution you've given me, and I'll stay away from Reader in the future. And once I realize how much better life is without Reader, I'll have yet another reason to hate going to work.

  • How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files?

How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files? I need to look at several thousand PDF files. It takes too long to open each one individually. The only thing I could think of is combining them into large groups and then using the Navigation index. But I like the way windows Picture and Fax Viewer does it because you can keep the files separate. Combining PDFs causes loss of individual file names. That would be a problem since I do need to have the individual file names.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is a DLL and is started via a rundll32.exe call and can't be set as an application to handle images in Firefox 3 and later versions.
Try to set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default viewer in Windows, then it should be listed automatically in the Mozilla Firefox Browse dialog.

  • "Cannot use adobe reader to view pdf in your web browser" error in Windows 7 and Acrobat pro 8.1.7

I get the error "Cannot use adobe reader to view pdf in your web browser.  Reader will now exit.  Please exit your browser and try again" in Windows 7 x32 and Windows 7 x64 with Acrobat pro 8.1.7.  This happens when trying to open  a PDF file in Internet explorer 8.0.760 or when I open a PDF in Quickbooks 2008.  If I answer ok or cancel the file opens normally.  If I open acrobat 8 first then the pdf files open as expected.  I also tried a copy of Acrobat reader with no difference in the outcome.  Since this happens on two different computers one fresh copy of windows 7 x64 the other an upgrade to windows 7 x32 and they used to work before the change to windows 7, I assume there is some kind of incompatibility with windows 7 and acrobat.  Is this a known issue and will it be fixed in an update to acrobat in the near future?

tvandersluijs - I'm sorry if that screwed up your machine however:
    1. What version of Adobe Reader are you using because as you can see the registry entry is for Adobe Reader 9, if ur using Adobe Reader 8 then u need to specify ur version as PAllens entry suggested - "E.g. "C:\Program files\Adobe\Acrobat [version]\Reader\AcroRd32.exe""
    2. I've used this solution significantly because I have come across this specific issue for multiple users.
    3. All the registry entry does is tell Windows what program to use by default to open/view PDF documents.
My intention wasn't to screw up ur machine or anybody elses as I said I've used this solution many times however what I've should gave is the disclaimer to backup ur registry before u make mods so u can revert back in case. Also the ony other thing I can think of is that this solution was for Windows XP using registry editior 5, I'm noticing that the title of this thread is Windows 7.

  • I can't view PDF files on Safari 5.1 for windows 7, how do I fix this?

I like using Safari 5.1 for my web browser at work (I use a windows 7 machine). But the recent update won't let me view PDF files. I have to open up Google Chrome then copy and paste the address into it so I can view the PDF. How do I fix this?

    I use Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro 9.4.5
There are no updates for this. Are you suggesting I unistall then reinstall this?

  • Safari - viewing PDFs opens up blank grey windows

Can't find other info on this problem - when viewing PDFs in Safari, a blank, grey window is opened every time a new PDF is viewed. The grey windows can't be opened (by clicking on them or by switching tabs), but they show up in mission control view, which makes it really hard to find the actual windows I'm looking for! This is happening in Mavericks, but has been happening since Mountain Lion (or maybe even Snow Leopard). Help?
After clicking through multiple pages of a pdf, my mission control looks like this:
    So annoying!

    I had the same probelm.
    1) You need to go onto your application list in finder, right click safari and choose "show package contents".
    2) Double click contents folder
    3) Open the folder named "recources"
    4) in the search bar in finder (can be accesed by holding doen command and "f", type "plug in" and the select the option that should appear called "type: Plug in"
    5) this should show you all the installed plug ins for safari.
    6) to solve your issue, you should delete any plugin that says adobe or pdf. You may have to delete more than one.
    7) fully close and restart safari and test.
Let me know how you get on, this should work for you.

  • Safari 5.1.2 still does not allow me to view PDF documents in web pages.  I am running OSX Lion 10.7.2. Any suggestions

Safari 5.1.2 still does not allow me to view PDF documents in web pages.  I am running OSX Lion 10.7.2. Any suggestions?

Read here >  Known Issues | Adobe products on Mac OS 10.7 Lion
    And go to ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the PDF Browser plugin to the Trash.
    Quit Safari, empty the Trash.
Relaunch Safari.  You should be able to view PDF files now.

  • Safari & Firefox behaving badly when viewing pdf files

Since upgrading my Mac to Lion, Safari and Firefox have not displayed pdf files for viewing.
SAFARI:  When I click a pdf link in Safari, a dark grey blank page appears. When I try to save the pdf file to my desktop, an error message says the file is not properly formatted.
FIREFOX: When I click a pdf link in Firefox, a white blank page appears. I can successfully save the file to my desktop, and in turn open the file using Acrobat.
CHROME: Everything works normally...no problems found when viewing pdf files.
I tried dumping the plist file for both Safari and Firefox, and resetting both browsers clearing them of cache, etc., but none of that worked.
Has anyone else seen similar behavior? Anyone have a solution?
I have posted this problem twice in Apple's Safari Forum, but have had no response in almost two months.
    Thanks

In Safari you to have the Acrobat PDFviewer plugin installed, or the The PDFBrowser plugin by Schubert of Germany Installed.
If you use the PDFBrowser Plugin you need the 2.4.2 version in order to work with the version 5.1 of Safari and 2.2.3 version for Safari 5.05 and lower.
In FireFox  version 3.6.X and lower you need version of the PDFBrowser Plugin version 2.2.3 which also works with Safari 5.05 and lower. And version 2.4.2 for Safari 5.1 and above and FF 4.0 and above, and Seamonkey version 2.3 and above.
THE ADOBE PDFVIEWER PLUGIN has only worked with OSX for Safari. Adobe quit supporting any other browsers on the Macintosh with the roll out of OSX years ago except for Safari. And despite repeated request by many users, its gone on deaf ears.
As a result This Schubert fellow from Germany has had to fill the void. It works on "any" browser on the Market for Mac. And works for any browser for Windows except Internet Explorer.
The only thing it doesn't do is online forms which the Acrobat Plugin will. But since it only works with Safari its Useless. I'm not going to Crank up Safari just to fill in Forms.
Oh, you use to be able to install both plugins and would work fine. Now if both are installed neither works. Its either use the one that works on one Web Browser and allows form filling.
Or use the one that works on everything, but can't do forms. Oh Schubert on his Web site explains his is forbidden from installing support for forms.
