Viewing photos in iPhoto that were saved to an external hard drive

I recently purchased a 160gb external hard drive in response to nearly filling the 80gb internal of my Powerbook G4. In order to free up some space, I put the 6,000 photos I had accumulated on to the external. I found myself immediately regretting that decision as I couldn't then view the images on the external using iphoto (without the fear of re-importing the files). For starters, is there a way to use iphoto to see my photos while they remain on the external? Second, is it possible to somehow save the files onto my powerbook in some sort of compressed format where I could still use iphoto with them. If anyone could help me out with this, i'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

iPhoto has a new option of creating alias of the source files instead of importing the entire file (see iPhoto's Preferences Advanced section). Then you operate as normal. The one caveat to that is if you delete a photo from your iPhoto library it does not delete the source file, only the alias file and edited version if there is one. You have to do that via the Finder. Also you can't move the files to a new location once you're created the library. If the external HD is not mounted you'll only be able to view the thumbnails and any edited photo until the HD is mounted again. I've created some Tutorials to assist users in converting to an alias based system.

Can I delete photos from iPhoto after importing them to an external hard drive?

For a while my family has been experiencing extreme slowness on our early 2008 iMac running OS X Lion. We tried many different ways to speed it up. I recently bought a new external hard-drive and was going to put some of our media on the hard-drive. Is it possible that I would be able to put my photos, videos, and music onto the hard-drive and delete them from my Mac to possibly speed it up. Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

How can I import my library that is saved on a external hard drive but it's not saved on the iTunes media folder?

I need to restore my computer to it's factory settings but I don't want to loose my playlists and my library (windows). I can copy any file from the computer because it's in good working order. All my music it's on a external hard drive, but there's lots of media files that I don't want to sync but need to keep! Any way to do that!?

Yes. But consolidate to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media.
The why I'm asking is because the music library (176gb) is way more than the computer drive (C:\). Remember that all the media is on a external hard drive (J:\)
The steps I gave earlier will work to copy the whole library onto the new drive, in the correct layout for future ease of use.

Hello,
There are several ways to write waveform data from LabVIEW so it can be accessed from DIAdem. Two of the easiest ways are to use either .lvm files or .tdm files. You can write .lvm files using the Write LabVIEW Measurement File.vi which is located in the File I/O palette. You can write .tdm files by using the storage VIs which are located in the File I/O >> Storage palette. So, I would recommend using either of these file formats if you are developing a new application since these can be loaded into DIAdem directly.
If you are interested in loading files that where already created from the Write Waveforms to File.vi, I am wondering what file type you are using. For example are you saving your files as .dat or .txt with your Write Waveforms to File.vi? Feel free to reply to this thread with this information and I would be glad to help you out.

I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook. I had just finalized a project, went to work on another one and files couldn't be found, were not deleted how do I find them?

The other day I had just finalized a project and went to work on another one and when I opened the project I could see what should have been there, but scrolling over the entire clip I would only see black and that the file was missing. I did not drag anything on the hard drive to the trash or move anything. How can I get those files? These are videos of my kids and I am devastated and willing to try anything!

Control click does not work - no option to find files. I have no idea what to do. When I look at the usage of the external drive the space is being used, but I cannot find the files. I am going to try MacKeeper's Undelete and see if I can make any progress with it.

It seems that saving to iCloud is a default. My Pages documents automatically save there unless I change to save to destination. I probably just need help in setting up the cloud. When I tried to change the setting, though, it told me that if I made the change, all data on icloud would be eliminated and i don't want that. I would ideally like to save everything on my external HD and not bother with iCloud. Certainly don't want to buy more storage space. Thanks for replying so promptly.

Lost photos,when transfer from a PC to Seagate External Hard Drive n then to Mac

Lost many photos,I have a lots of photos since I carry a camera constantly ,when transfer from a PC that crash to 5T Seagate External Hard Drive I thought I was saved(in a way) I use Time Machine to save most of my work n transfer then to IMac just the first time worked I saw the photos but when I did try to use it again, I can't see them, most are encrypted n many are lost without even touch the key to delete them from my library notice that while Organizing ,any ideas how to recover them from the Library o recovered from encrypted from Iphoto version 8.1.2 ?

You can use File Sharing in iTune to copy files over.

Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format.

How do I copy an iPhoto library, which is on an external hard drive, onto a new external hard drive?

I'm running out of space on my external hard drive, so I was advised to buy one with triple the amount of space. So, I need to copy my current iphoto library, which is on an external hard drive, onto a new external hard drive. I thought I could just drag and drop it in, but that doesn't seem to be working.

Make sure the external drive is formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and then drag the iPhoto Library to that drive using the Finder.
Then double click the library in its new location to open it in iPhoto. Test it thoroughly, if it is working, before deleting the original library on the internal drive.

How do i transfer my itunes library onto my new computer, when on the old computer I have all the songs saved onto an external hard drive, which I still wish to use?

When I have held the shift key down & clicked on the iTunes library that was shown on the external hard drive, it has loaded most of the older albums, however there are several albums which have not appeared on iTunes on the new laptop, but if you go into explorer and look at the folders/files on the hard drive, they do appear on the external hard drive.
I have also noticed my play lists and genres have not shown as they were on the old laptop.
Is there any way of getting a complete copy of all songs, play lists, etc. so that is does not require to hold files in two difference places, I would prefer if all the files were on the external hard drive, so I do not fill the internal hard drive with songs?

Time discrepancy on items saved onto network external hard drives

This is an odd problem that just turned up seemingly this morning. I have an Apple Extreme base station with two external hard drives attached via my network that are used primarily for multimedia. This morning I noticed that everything that's saved directly onto the hard drives has a serious time discrepancy - specifically, December 13, 1931 at 8:45 p.m. And all of the files saved since this morning have that same time stamp, while everything saved onto the computer's internal hard drive has a normal time stamp. Is this simply a matter of disconnecting and then reconnection the hard drives to fix the problem, or is there more that needs to be done?

Project will not open when saved to an external hard-drive

Well, as the title says, I cannot reopen a project when saved to an external hard-drive, it will however do so when I save to a local drive... Not good if you wanna work around several workstations, any ideas as to why?

You should be asking on that forum. It would be beneficial if you provided some concrete information, what computer, what drives, how are they formatted, how are they connected, what exactly happens when you try to open it?

Hi to all. I do have a problem with my apple Tv. I can't play the HD movies that I have in my external hard drive which is connenected to my macbook pro. Some of them don't play at all and it's switching off the XBMC, and some of them are just starting for a few seconds and then is getting paused trying to buffering for a long time. The simple avi movies are playing with fewer stops for buffering. What is the problem? Can you help me?

I tried your suggestion, and it's been giving me the message "Preparing for Backup" for the past 8 hours. Does this mean TM is backing up my hard drive? I'll give it a few more hours, but if nothing else happens, I'm not sure what else to do. I'm not sure if there are any new external hard drives that are compatible with ML yet.
