Viewing Photoshop Styles

Is there anything that would allow styles to be viewed without actually loading them in Photoshop? I have a large collection and would like to find some way to look at them without loading them and then deleting them when they're not the ones I want. It would certainly be a timesaver.
Thanks.

No. Since they are merely parametric definitions of procedurally generated pixels, a viewer for this kind of stuff would have to fully re-create the entire engine, which is anything but trivial. I could imagine that somehow you could view the previews already stored in the preset libraries similarly to those brush viewing tools, but otherwise I don't think that there is any quick way. Might be a task for a script to iterate through all styles and create thumbnails or something...

  • Tip: How to emulate Photoshop-style curves in Lightroom

We all remember the days of Lightroom 1 and the term "Adobe red", when lots of people shouted about how their in-camera color is superior to Adobe's rendering. These days are long forgotten, now that we have the DNG color profiles, introduced with Lightroom 2. So, now, if you use the appropriate profiles, the default rendering almost matches that of camera manufacturers.
However, there's one aspect of color quality that, from time to time, reminds me of legacy ACR color. That is when you start adjusting and make more or less strong adjustments with Curves, Contrast slider or other tonal controls.
See how a contrast boosting S-curve shifted the skin tones towards warmer tones in Photoshop and how they look muddy-yellow-greenish in Lightroom?
            Original.
            Lightroom (left) and Photoshop (right).
I have noticed that warm colors (orange and everything around it) are more affected. Skin tones and some other objects (e.g. wooden furniture) fall in this category. The difference between other colors (blues, greens) is much smaller between Lightroom and Photoshop.
This happens because, curves in Lightroom have been programmed to be smarter and said to have a hue lock. That is, unlike curves in Photoshop or any other program on Earth, where curves affect the luminance, as well as saturation and hue, curves in Lightroom are mostly luminance-based, have a moderate saturation boos and minimal or almost no hue shift. This is described in more details here, here and also confirmed here. Most experts in the field consider Lightroom's implementation to be superior to Photoshop's, because it better preserves the original color.
However, in my tests (you also can easily check HSL values in Photoshop) I have found that not only the skin tone hues will not shift towards a warmer red like in Photoshop, but they will actually shift in the opposite direction — towards yellow and green. Below you can see the hue values of the marker in the photos.
If you, like me, happen to hate those muddy yellow/green skin tones in the shadows, you now have a way to get rid of them. The trick is to emulate Photoshop-style curves in Lightroom. Now that we have per-channel R, G and B curves in Lightroom 4, we can do this by using them instead of Contrast slider or the old composite point curve.
If you find that this method twists the hues too far (e.g. faces are getting too red in the shadows), you can use something intermediate: a blend between moderate R+G+B curves and some Contrast slider. I personally like something in-between Lightroom and Photoshop.
And finally, you need to adjust the three R, G and B curves so that they match perfectly to avoid losing color balance. It's very hard to do it in Lightroom, since there are no number input boxes for curve points. So, it's better to adjust one channel, and then carefully copy it to other in a text editor. I have prepared a collection of R+G+B contrast-boosting curves of different intensity: form Normal to Ultra Strong. You need to place the in your ACR's Curve preset folder. On Windows, it's \Users\<userprofile>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Curves.
    Download RGB curves

Thanks Dorin - I've downloaded but not yet scrutinized. -Rob

  • Viewing Photoshop CS6 on a retina display help!

How do you view Photoshop CS6 13.0.4 in low resolution on a macbook pro retina display? I have tried opening CS6 in applications> get info> under general there is no option to open in low resolution as there is in Lightroom.

Perhaps it would be helpful if you would describe why you want to do so.  What's not working for you?
I'm not a Mac user, but if there's an underlying problem that could be worked-around by changing the way you're using Photoshop maybe that could be an alternate solution for you.

  • How to view Photoshop files are saved in the iPhoto library in Bridge?

I was very happy to see that photoshop files are now a supported file in iPhoto. However I was really bummed to see that once those files are placed in iPhoto they can't be viewed in Bridge. Does anyone know a way to fix this?

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

    Try using Design Time Stylesheets.
Open the Design-Time Style Sheets dialog box by doing one of
    the following:
    1. Right-click in the CSS Styles panel, and in the context
    menu select
    Design-time, or
    2. Select Text > CSS Styles > Design-time.

  • What software is required to view Photoshop CC "Classroom In A Book" downloadable video lesson files from Peachpit? (edited by mod for clarity)

Hi all, I am a brand new student, so what I know about photoshop right now is virtually nill. I have the Adobe Photoshop CC classroom in a book. In the back of the book there is a key code to register your book at Peachpit.com. Upon registering the book, you are given lessons to download. I have done this. My problem is no device on my computer will allow me to view these lessons. I already have windows media player and real player cloud and neither one are allowing me to view these. I've already lost hours of study time trying to figure this out, does anyone out there know what I can do or know what I can download. On the RealPlayer cloud site they said WINDVD was a good alternative, this was not the case for me, it totally wacked out my computer putting me even further behind. Help?

Have you asked the book publisher?

  • Using the Mac Preview App to view Photoshop .psd files

When I click on a Photoshop .psd file and open it using Preview, there is always a large gray square somewhere in the picture, usually near the left border. This occurs whether the layers in the file have been flattened or not so it doesn't represent another layer. When I view the file in Photoshop, it is just fine. So it appears to be an issue with how Preview views the file. Any suggestions?

Thanks both Andreas and Bob. By the way Bob, have you tried importing the example file that I referred to? As stated earlier this problem does not show up with every PSD file (in my testing I can see that about 50% of my (flat) files shows up as gray (all the files are perfectly OK in Photoshop (CS2) and in Bridge however).

  • Custom Views: Set style of text in custom HTML tags

hi all, I'm using an extended JEditorPane to render HTML containing custom tags e.g. <mytag>Text</mytag>
My ViewFactory dynamically loads a class based on the name of the tag to return the View for that tag. (The idea being you can add any tag, by just providing a View class to render it). It's working to the extent that I can use the View.paint() method to paint a square of text before and after the content element.
What I need to do is set the style (attributes) of the text contained in the custom tags. Is this possible?
A call to doc.setCharacterAttributes(startoffset, endoffset, attrs, true); from the View results in a "Attempt to mutate in notification", possibly because the HTMLDocument is locked at this time.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I'll rephrase. Is it possible to change the HTMLDocument from a View object. Forgive my lack of understanding.

  • Can Apple TV play wmv, ppt or view Photoshop Bridge slideshows?

I am considering purchasing Apple TV.  I am hoping that I can replace the HDMI cable from my MacBook Pro to my HD TV with the Apple TV setup.  Now I view wmv and ppt files playing on my MacBook on my HD TV and Adobe Bridge slideshows.  That is in addition to NetFlix and movies.
My  motivation to purchase Apple TV is to view MLB.com games on my HD TV which I can not reliably do when I choose the fill screen option in the MLB media player.  If I do so do I would like to not have to use my present HDMI cable any longer.

No, it plays none of those formats.

  • Viewing Photoshop JPGs in Finder

I love the way you can shuffle through and zoom photos in the Leopard Finder. But by default, my system would open image files in Preview. I'm a designer, so I always need PNGs, JPGs, and GIFs to open in Photoshop. So I set the application of choice for each of these file types in the Get Info window. Now I can easily open them in Photoshop, but a lot of the images aren't displaying in the Finder. Instead of seeing the actual image in each file, I see an icon for the file type. Is there a way to have the default application for these file types be Photoshop and still see all file images in the Finder?

I kind of sounds like you're saving your images from Photoshop without a preview. In PS, open the preferences (Command+K). Click on the File Handling heading in the left column. For Image Previews, set the pull down menu to "Always Save". Check boxes on for Icon, Full Size and Macintosh Thumbnail.

  • View photoshop alpha channel

I am working with Final Cut Pro 5 by Larry Jordan, p. 402, Creating a Traveling Matte. He says to double click a tiff file and load it into the viewer. In the book the transparent checker board appears behind a white snowboarder in the Viewer. (It is a traveling matte we are working on using the three video layers.) When I double click it to put the tif into the viewer, it is black behind a white snowboarder, not the transparent checkerboard he shows in the book. Needless to say, what he describes as working does not work since I have black instead of transparent showing in the Viewer. Is there something wrong with this tif file or is there a setting somewhere that will let me see the black area as transparent? I tried changing the type of alpha channel from black to white to straight to none. Nothing works. Is there some other setting in Final Cut that will let me look at the area behind the white snowboarder as transparent instead of black in the Viewer? The book is trying to put a video inside a graphic image of a snowboarder. V1 at the bottom, V2 is the tiff, V3 is another snow scene.

You are correct and I really appreciate your answer. However, I also found that I had to delete the tif file that was in the timeline when I double clicked the sequence to put it in the timeline. (The author said to double click the sequence and load it into the timeline. V2 was the tif.)Then I had to drag the tif file from the browser to replace the tif file I had just deleted. Then it worked. Somehow there was an error in the material on the computer. The book is terrific, but somehow this tif file that was in the sequence was changed when I put it on my computer.

  • Viewing Photoshop Elements 9 Albums - Stacked Photos

Elements 9 will allow you to stack photos, this is useful if you have edited an original and want to keep both versions. When I have photos included in an album that are part of a stack, Apple TV (new version) displays all images from that stack, not just the top image. Maybe this is a limitation of the Photoshop API, but It bears looking into as a bug fix.
The work-around for now is to copy the top image in the stack to another folder and just include that in the album.

To be honest this doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
I think you may be expecting a bit much from the AppleTV to discriminate the top version of a stack, it may simply look at a folder and harvest images from there rather than interrogating any kind of album database that PSE 9 has. Long time since I used PSE mind you, it may be that AppleTV does use some API to interact with it, in which case you may be in with a chance of a fix. I suspect apple's own suites behave better in this regard, but I don't know for certain.
Anyhow worth sending feedback to Apple here:

    Good luck with a resolution.
